Need a Word Processor

I have an iPhone but am about to spend more $$ than I want to on a micro notebook computer (Sony Vaio UX I think) because I need to create simple documents when on the road and don't want to carry my iBook along. My question is, based on the available technology, is it conceivable that, at some future date, I will be able to write and edit word docs on the iPhone? I'm not asking "Will it happen?" because I know that only Steve and God know that answer. But COULD it happen?

Have you tried to use the Notes app and email the stuff to your computer? That would be an option, however I really wouldn't want to do a document of any great length.
As far as the future date, I would say the technology is there, but the app????? Maybe

Another free, open-source option, more evolved and Mac-like than OpenOffice, is LibreOffice. It reads, edits and saves documents in MS Office formats as well as its own, and it includes word, spreadsheet, presentation, drawing, database and formula processing capabilities.
That said, I prefer using Apple's Pages ($20) whenever I don't need to create MS Office-compatible documents, i.e., whenever I'm writing something that I'll print instead of sharing it electronically with non-Mac users. (Pages does read, write and save in Word's file format, but complex document formatting doesn't translate very well.) A point in LibreOffice's favor is that I like the spreadsheet in LibreOffice better than Apple's Numbers, which I got with Pages and Keynote as part of the iWork package. (They're now available separately.)
If your work will require frequent sharing of elaborately formatted documents with Windows-based users of MS Office, unfortunately you'll have to buy MS Word for the Mac to get the best possible compatibility and avoid losing formatting in the translation. Ever since the demise of Word 5.1a (must be 15 years now), I have loathed Word for always being certain that it knows better than I do what I want to type and write and constantly getting in my way. I can only imagine how much more obnoxious it would see if I weren't an excellent speller with a good command of grammar. Most infuriating is the fact that I've never been able to type a numbered or bulleted list of items in Word without having it laid out exactly the way Word thinks I should want it instead of the way I want it, no matter how many "features" I turn off.

Remember that you meet here people from all parts of the world, who've gone to many different schools and in times very different from yours. They may not be at all familiar with what your school requires; of course, different schools may have different requirements. NeoOffice is the most Mac-like, but you have to pay a (relatively small) fee to download it. The other two are completely free; LibreOffice seems to be under most active development at present, so that's the one I'd choose, but they're pretty much interchangeable in terms of features. Although both OO/LO are 'native', in the sense that X11 is no longer required, their interface (buttons, palettes, lists, some menus) feels strange and rather rough, and that's because, unlike NeoOffice, by and large they don't use specific Mac interface features (Aqua).
There are a good many other Mac word processors. Most offer the ability to open (or import) and save as (or export to) the Word format, with varying degrees of success. In most cases, the more complex features in Word, such as page breaks, footnotes, fields, formulae, are not well supported or not supported at all. For instance, Pages, which has already been mentioned more than once, is reasonably compatible with Word, but its manual warns,
"Because of text layout differences between Microsoft Word and Pages, an exported Word document may contain a different number of pages than its Pages counterpart. Also, special typographic features and some graphics may not display as well, particularly those using transparency (alpha channels). Tables and column layouts may not export identically."
So, what you need to do is to make a list of Word features you will need your word processor to honour, figure out your bugdet, and then check which one of the many Mac word processor best fits your needs.

hello i need a FREE decent word processor ONLY. Not neo office because i can't upgrade. All i need is a good word processor that is free. I might be asking a lot but i don't know. I'm an "intermediate" mac user. But i don't know much about what kind of free apps are out there.

When purchasing from eBay, you have no guarantee, that the discs are for the exact model of your particular Mac.
If you call Apple Customer Service, not Apple Technical Support, you may be able to order replacement original system install discs, for a fee.
Be prepared to furnish all pertinent data about the Mac.
Such as serial number, Hard Drive size, processor speed, display size, etc.

How can i do the word processor's page operations in my java word processor

I am developing a word processor using Java. It�s workspace is JTextPane. In order to give the page view and do page operation I have assigned one JTextPane per page.
Generaly in a word processor if the cursor completes a page, a new page will be created and the cursor will be fixed in the starting position of the new page.
I need to do the same thing in my word processor.
That is I need to restrict the JTextPane(page) in such a way that the cursor has to be always inside the JtextPane. It means that the JTextPane (page) should not increase it�s size whenever the cursor goes out of it�s size. Instead a new JTextPane(page) can be created and the cursor can be fixed in starting position of the new JTextPane.
Thing is that a text component can be added with or without the JScrollPane. In the first case both the scroll bar and the cursor will appear if it goes out of the text component�s rage. In the second case neither scroll bar nor cursor will appear. So these two will not help me.
How can I do this in my word processor?
I will be grateful to you if you send some suggestion.

I'm fairly new to Java but is working on a projec similar to yours. I always use other code to learn how new parts of java works. Haven't been able to find any examples of initializing JTextPanes though. Any chance of you posting some here?
Would be much appriciated.

Most full featured word processor? (table editing, google docs) and webdav on the ipad

Hi All,
So I have had a frustrating time trying to add rows to a table in a word processing document on Google Docs. Are there any word processors that support this? Quickoffice and Documents to Go do not as of this writing. (May 26th, 2011.) at least not that I can determine.
Does Office2HD support this feature? Do any of the word processors?
My current thoughts/what Apple needs to do/
Currently I am thinking about buying Pages and then using Goodreader to open the file in pages, and then saving the pages document to idisk/webdav and then moving it to google docs from idisk/webdav using Goodreader (though it appears you can use Readdledocs too.)
According to the makers of Docsportal, if Pages supported Open With, I could Open With Docsportal and it would be uploaded. Alternatively, Docsportal could simply add idisk or webdav support, but I can understand why they are waiting for Apple to get their act together.
Currently, I have discovered that Quickoffice does support mounting quickoffice as a drive as does goodreader. Docs2Go does not support this feature. This is a nice way to get files in and out. The Mac will support WebDAV for the Mac filesystem as of Lion allowing programs like goodreader or readdledocs to connect to it.

Office2HD as mentioned elsewhere in this forum supports Google Docs.
It does also support WebDAV (mounting as an external drive.) The help file mentions that it now allows you to navigate using the cursor or arrow keys.

How can I find a word processor other than TextEdit?

I recently bought a word processing program called AbiWord for my imac. I just bought it cheap from the internet and thought it worth to try since I am writing a document that needs more than TexEdit can do.
Can anyone advice me on this as I'm not willing to buy a Microsoft Word for my imac.

Word Processor for Ibook Clamshell G3

Is there a word processor I can use with my Ibook Clamshell. It could be freeware or basic. I need it for memos, notes, letters and plan to write a book. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

WordPerfect is a word processing application. At the height of its popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was the de facto standard word processor, but has since been eclipsed in sales by Microsoft Word. WordPerfect version 3.5e for Mac has been made freeware by Corel, and can be downloaded here http://main.system7today.com/software/wordperfect/wordperfect.html . It is a great, free alternative to Microsoft Word!

Any recommendations as to which word processor is best for Mac?

There is no best WP for any computer...there is a best WP for you but without knowing your circumstances we cannot give any meaningful advice. MS Word is great if you need 100% MS compatibility but it has a high learning curve and is more than a little frustrating to use. Pages (part of Apple's iWork suite) is very nice though it has a bit of a learning curve too. Mariner Write is quite good as are the two Nisus offerings. These are just a few of your choices. The good news is that all of them can be downloaded and tried out (and an MS Office tryout should already be on your computer).

Best option for a word processor for the G3 dual usb running Panther

More and more I am coming to rely on my G3 for word processing tasks - particularly research notes and a personal journal.
So far I've tried the simple text editor (quick but poor text on-screen), OpenOffice (being xwindow it's slow to load and slow to update screen) and AppleWorks (good display but no spell checker) -each have problems for me.
What is the best word processor for the G3 running Panther (or Classic/9 for that matter). I need: Quick to load/run, readable text, automatic word wrap, spell checking and a reasonable path to exchange files with my desktop Linux system.

AppleWorks does have a spellchecker; it just is not automatic (check-as-you-type).
In AppleWorks, go to Edit menu > Writing Tools > Check Document Spelling.
I've never used anything (in a major way) except AppleWorks.
A couple of options which you haven't mentioned are Pages in _iWork '06_ (or earlier; the current version has left behind G3 processors) and _Microsoft Office for Mac_.
I'm unsure of how well any of these will integrate with Linux. Open Office may be your best bet there. (I'm just guessing. It seems like common sense to me that Open Office would work with an open OS like Linux.)
Another application which is creating a buzz and sounds like it could work for you is _Google Docs_. There would certainly be no problem with Linux integration there. It looks like it would be easy sharing all the way around and you shouldn't find any incompatibilities as long as you have a decently up-to-date browser.
I'm not sure anyone has developed the "perfect" word processor, but there are some good ones out there. Good luck on your quest.

Word processor and/or excel on iPod Touch?

I'm in the process of purchasing an iPod Touch, but if I do I intend to use it both as an mp3-player and a PDA (what's the point of having wifi on your mp3-player otherwise, huh?)
In that case, I will need some sort of word-processor and excel-program on it. I normally use Open Office on my laptop.
I'd like to know:
- Are there any applications specifically developed for this?
or
- Do you know of any programs/applications that can be installed and used, even if they're not primarily designed for the iPod Touch?
Of course I intend to jailbreak it first.

Extra info related to this:
I've now found out that online apps (like google docs, for example) can be used for this purpose, with more or less satisfying results. When app store opens there will also be at least a few different programs for connecting to your home computer and possibly using the programs installed on that.
For offline use there are presently apps available (developed for iPhone) that are both limited in useability and take up serious amounts of precious memory. Personally, I think they seem rather crappy.
Until something better comes up through the app store the best choice is probably google docs or similar online services.

Please confirm the question I asked you. Did your computer come with Word 2010 Starter and Excel 2010 Starter already pre-installed on your laptop ?
These versions are versions that do not time out, they have a few features taken away from them that the full version has, if you want the full functionality, as well as access to power point etc you will need to purchase the full version.

Best free Word Processor that's compatible with Microsoft Word?

hey guys, i'm looking at moving over to the Mac in a couple days and i just need to know the best free Word Processor that can open .doc files. 99% of my docs made in Word are of the 97-2003 variety and not 2007's .docx.

Well, in terms of best, it might be argued the best would be MS Word for Mac (MS Office for Mac 2011) as it uses the same native format as the window's version of office.
Others that are compatible include Apple's own Pages - http://www.apple.com/apps/pages/
Then there are the free offerings, like openoffice - http://www.openoffice.org/ and others.
I do not honestly know if there is one single "best" as there are so many possible specific features and formating oddities in MS Word that it is impossible to say that any one otherwise generally MS-Word-compatible program is guaranteed to be 100% compatible with your specific documents.
