Need advice, 5d mark ii autofocus issues

Hello everyone!
Me and my 5D mark ii need some advice. I bought it some years ago, but didn't use it too much until the last year or so (long story) and I really should have, since the warranty is long expired :/
I'm having issues with autofocus. I was shooting some product photos in studio when I realized that this was a pretty big issue, I've just told myself that it was a user error other times when a shot was out of focus, but this was getting serious and I'm honestly not that horrible of a photographer
I recently also purchased the spyder lenscal, to check if it could be my lenses (though it did seem weird that this issue would affect ALL my lenses, and that it would only happen sometimes) and with my first test I took a photo and it looked a little off center, so I did a minor micro adjustment, turned the focus ring all out, made the camera focus and take a photo, and the focus was now WAY off. I found it odd, so I simply turned the focus ring again, focused and took another shot, and this time the focus was almost spot on. Oh, I only used center af point, the red point shows focus where I wanted it. I did the above several more times, in good lighting and camera on tripod, and some photos turned out pretty sharp while others were completely out of focus. I own 2 lenses, 17-40 and 50mm, and this happens on both though it seems to happen less frequently with the 17-40. I also find the autofocus hunting something fierce from time to time, no matter if it's in a well lit studio, outdoors or indoors.
Have anyone else had this issue and had it fixed at a certified canon service center? I'm trying to figure out if it's worth fixing or if it's time looking for a new camera. Honestly, I do want it fixed. I bought this camera with a small inheritance, investing in a camera that was going to stay with me for as long as possible as I usually dont have the funds to buy new ones that often. I'm afraid that sending it in for repair will cost so much that it would be wiser to just get a new one.
I'm guessing there isn't anything I can do myself about this issue. Does anyone know how much approximately it costs to get something like this fixed?
Sorry for the wall of text, and thank you for any advice you can give me.

Here are several ideas...
Okay, first of all you wrote you are seeing the same issues with both lenses: 17-40 and a 50mm.
Which 50mm? If it's the 50/1.8, it's a micro motor lens with a reputation for somewhat iffy auto focus. Many folks who try to Micro Focus Adjust it eventually give up, because it isn't very consistent. It also tends to hunt a lot in lower light. You probably would see better results with only the center point and this lens, but a USM lens such as the EF 50/1.4 or similar would give much faster, more consistent AF.
The 17-40 is an f4 lens... so can't take full advantage of the f2.8 sensitivity of the center AF point. Still, as an USM lens, it should focus more surely and quickly than the EF 50/1.8.
What focus mode are you using? One Shot or AI Servo?
See the AF point pattern in the above response? Note the 6 points right around the center one (roughly on or within the circle denoting the spot focus area), making for a total of 15? Those are "hidden" Assist Points that have to be enabled in the menu, are not indicated in the viewfinder and only work in AI Servo focus mode. The other nine points (center one, plus 8 peripheral), as seen indicated in the viewfinder, are available in both One Shot and AI Servo.  For the type of photography you are doing, I'd be using One Shot, which gives greater accuracy than AI Servo. (Notes: 1. Above ignores AI Focus mode... because it really isn't a focus mode at all. In AI Focus the camera is supposed to decide for you whether or not the subject is moving, then switch to using the appropriate mode: AI Servo for moving and One Shot for stationary subjects.  2. Live View focusing uses contrast detection AF instead of phase detection that's done with the AF points seen in the viewfinder, is even more accurate than One Shot, although it's much slower.)
Of the nine "usual" AF points, on 5DII (and 5D original for that matter), yes, only the center one is the more sensitive "cross" type. All the others are single axis an less sensitive. However, for the types of things you shoot, they should all be usable. The 5DII's AF system is rated down to about -.5 or -1.0 EV light levels, if memory serves. I find the center point on mine is actually a little better in low light than my 7Ds or, before them, 50Ds... all of which are rated the same as the 5DII.  Slower, yes, but still able to lock on after the 7Ds and 50Ds gave up completely.
Anyway, I most often use the center point only on my 5DII (and with other cameras). You do have to be a bit careful focusing and recomposing, though, with any shallow depth of field shots.
Regarding calibrating your lenses using MFA... I haven't used the product you mention and don't know how you are using it.. Canon and Reikan Focal both recommend the "target" for most lenses be at a distance 50X the focal lenght of the lens. So a 50mm lens would have a target 2500mm or 2.5 meters (or about 8 feet) away. A zoom lens is harder to MFA.... you probably should check it at both extremes of the focal length range and if they aren't the same (seldom are) might need to arrive at an average amount of adjustment or skew it a little toward one end or the other that you use most. (Note: newer cameras with a later version of the MFA feature allow for two adjustments to zoom lenses, one at each end of the zoom range.)
Also, I've heard of folks having trouble doing calibration indoors, in artificial light. In particular, any common fluorescent lamps can mess with AF. Best if possible to do it outdoors in sunlight or light overcast or light shade.
Stopping down to f11, you should get a lot of depth of field that would hide most minor focus errors, unless the subject is very close (i.e., near macro distances).
If the camera and lenses haven't been used much, you might try cleaning the lens to camera electronic contacts. I recommend just lightly dampening a clean, lint free rag with a few drops of isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and carefully wiping the contacts with that. There might be finger oils or something on them effecting AF performance.
It also might be worth having the camera cleaned. Perhaps some dust has settled on the AF sensor array or on the mirror that's effecting AF performance.  I don't recommend trying to clean these yourself, perhaps aside from a puff of air from a bulb blower.
How are you viewing and evaluating your images? I ask because many people make the mistake of over magnifying images.... looking at a 5DII's image at 100% is like looking at a five or six foot wide print from 18" away... so close that minor and meaningless flaws are bound to be seen. I usually evaluate image focus and sharpness at 50% or 33% with my cameras (though I do work on images at higher magnifications for other reasons).
Also, some softwares can be a little "flaky". I use Lightroom extensively and have to be careful. When I open an image at even moderate magnifications in the Develop module, it takes a while to load, showing an enlarged thumbnail intially that always looks poorly focused... And I find if I have the crop tool active, it takes even a little longer to render the image correctly and show it's true sharpness and focus accuracy.
Finally... do you have any filters on the lenses? If so, try some tests without any filters. I have seen filters effect AF performance. If not using one it's possible a lens hood might help, too, by keeping oblique light off the front of the lens.
All that being said, it is possible something is wrong with the camera and you should have it (and the lenses) looked at.
Hope this helps! Keep us posted.

  • Need Advice About Powerbook Start-up Issue

Hi all, I've been having issues with my Powerbook recently. First, was the narcoleptic thing that had been going on since November - that was fixed by Apple two weeks ago.
However, when I got it back, the PB would go to sleep early despite the SP settings, and/or shut down if I left my PB on battery power.
Today, the Powerbook will not startup. It will chime, but after that the display just stays black. The fans are running, but that's it.
I tried: the PMU reset, zapping PRAM (it won't do it), booting from the installer disk, booting from the hardware test, T-starting into my G5, etc. I also tried booting AC only and battery only. Still the display stays black, and I have to hold down the power button for it to turn off.
Any suggestions would be great...would like to avoid sending it into Apple again, but maybe that's unavoidable, short of purchasing another laptop?
    Thanks!

Sometimes the easiest is the answer, try hitting the F2 key to bring up the brightness.
Hopefully your video is OK, maybe try hooking up an external monitor.
Target Disk Mode would also be in the mix of things to try.

  • Major Issues with installing 4tb internal. Really need advice please

In the process of a long needed upgrade to my 2010 Mac Pro Quad core 2.8 and have run into a serious headache that I really need advice on so I can get back to work. I've already spent 2 days dealing with all of this...
Just did a new SSD install and Migration which went fine but I'm also updating the rest of the internal drives. My main (non boot) drive was being upgraded from a Seagate Barracuda 3tb to a 4th Deskstar NAS (it was showing as compatible with my desktop, see links below). My 3tb ran fine for years but now due to it being heavily used I want to switch to a new drive and I can also use a bit more space.
The issue I'm running into is that initially on boot, my system was telling me it couldn't recognize the disk and it wasn't even showing up in Disk Utility. I had to purchase a SATA USB 3 kit to attach it as an external to get it to show which worked without problem. With the USB kit I was then able to partition it (GUID, Mac OS extended journaled) and format it properly. After reinserting the drive into my tower as an internal it failed to show again. After a few attempts of restarts and trying various bays it popped up but showed as a non formatted drive and I was told again that the system didn't recognise it. I was then given the option to initialise and was then actually able to then format and partition it though Disk Utility while it was installed as an internal.
Figured that was problem solved but when I went to check the drive and getting ready to transfer files over I noticed that Disk Utility was only allowing the First Aid and Partition options but not Erase, RAID, Restore which I'd never seen before. I then also noticed that none of the drive connection info was in the same format nor will it even provide drive bay info, connection info or read/write status (See screen shots). This is what I can't figure out and really need to clarify before I put full trust into using this drive.
Any info would be greatly appreciated...
Deskstar 4tb internal info which is installed in Bay 2
3tb Seagate which I trying to retire and transfer from.
Here are the weblinks to the Deskstar 4tb drive and the compatibility list but I support isn't allowing me to add direct links so add the www. before hand.
    (Drive - eshop.macsales.com/item/HGST/0S03664/) (compatibility list - eshop.macsales.com/Descriptions/specs/Framework.cfm?page=macpromid2010.html).

    What OSX version?
Disk Utility in later versions of ML and I think Mavericks have problems formatting with 4 TB internal drives.

    Hi Joni Guapz,
There shouldn't be any issue on this board if you do the proper setups accordingly.
1 word of advice for you. This mobo is very very very particular of the RAMs working on it, therefore, please kindly refer to the following page for a list of compatible RAMs:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=433
Please note that if you are an o/clocker, I suggest you browsing through the older post of the forum through the search engine and see which are the best selected RAMs for your board, or you can go to the following thread by me on Mobo vs RAMs etc... on the top of 1st page and see the pros and cons listed out from individual users.
All in all, this is a very very very good and stable board for me myself(in my signature) and it rocks very smoothly during gaming, ripping music and multi-tasking.
    All the Best... :D!!!

  • Need advice on video software.

    Need advice on video software.
I currently use adobe elements 3 and have done so for a few years now with no problems. my os is XP and my system is a couple of years old, but we do have a brand new win7 machine in the house.
I am currently look at Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 Ultra OR Adobe Premiere Elements 8. Reviews for both softwares seem very good BUT, when I dig deeper into user reviews instead of editor reviews do I find problems.
Major problems with program crashing all over the place, at start up etc, and it is still not getting along with any win7 machine? Major problems with drivers. Honestly, I do not want to have to jump through dozens of hoops to get any software to run. After I pay for it, it should run, period.
Has anyone else here used both softwares and can you give an honest opinion of each?
I am also asking these same questions on the cyberlink site.
I would like to upgrade my video software to take advantage of the new features that are coming out but I really don't want a big headache trying to run one or the other. To be fair, when I bought adobe elements 3 I had also bought pinnacle, which has gathered dust since my first week with it, which is why elements was purchased. That was money wasted and I do not wish to repeat this. I would like to go with Premiere Elements 8 but remain very unsure.

If your newer machine is Win7 64-bit, it might be worth waiting for SP-1 to be issued, and then hope that 64-bit drivers are fully included. The 64-bit drivers now seem t be an issue at this point, and that will affect any NLE program.
Also, and regardless of which particular program you choose, optimizing your computer, the OS, the hardware, and the resources management, will go a very long way to insuring success. Few programs can tax a computer, as an NLE can - any NLE. Video and Audio editing will stress your system, like almost nothing else can, except for heavy-duty CAD, or 3D work, though those are usually done only on specialized, optimized computers, designed just for those applications.
Not the specific advice that you seek, but it's the best that I can do.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Really need advice/help please

I am importing VHS movies and I need advice on procedures, I am really stuck so any advice given will be very helpful.
I have my VCR connected to a ADVC300 analog to digital convertor, which is hooked up to my macbook.
I am using iMovie 08, but have the previous one installed iMovie HD 6.
I have no problem importing the footage... it comes in as a DV file (which I believe I need in order to edit footage later on).
    My problem is:
    1) The size of the DV is HUGE. Is this the format that I need to edit to later put on DVD by converting to mp4?
    2) I am a total novice, so is iMovie the best for doing the import? I have Final Cut Express, but I am not sure how to use it.
    3) I also have QT Pro, but after I am done doing an import and transfer the DV file to my back up drive... I cant seem to get the import to pull up in iMovie again. Do you have to do the editing right away after the import or you loose the ability in iMovie?
    4) My HD space on my computer is almost full and I thought that I deleted the DV file off my computer after transfering it to a backup drive. I went into Movies, and iMovies and deleted it... but it must be stored somewhere else, because I have like 60 GB used still?
    Thank you SO MUCH!!!!

    1) The size of the DV is HUGE. Is this the format that I need to edit to later put on DVD by >converting to mp4?
Yes, DV is huge. You really need an external drive. The hugeness of DV is not an issue for iDVD. iDVD will convert the DV or MP4 into MPEG2 for encoding on the DVD. If you get iMovie 09, you can send DV to iDVD. In iMovie 08, you share as an h.264 file and that goes to iDVD. In my experience, not much difference.
    2) I am a total novice, so is iMovie the best for doing the import? I have Final Cut Express, but I am >not sure how to use it.
Yes, iMovie 08/9 is the best. You can easily edit in iMovie 08. However if you later want to edit in FCE, you can access these files from FCE. If you import into FCE, iMovie can't see them.
    3) I also have QT Pro, but after I am done doing an import and transfer the DV file to my back up >drive... I cant seem to get the import to pull up in iMovie again. Do you have to do the editing right >away after the import or you loose the ability in iMovie?
In iMovie, click VIEW/EVENTS BY VOLUME. You should see your external drive in the Event Library list. You can drag your file from your internal drive to the external drive by dragging and dropping the icon for your event onto the icon for the external drive. If you do it this way, iMovie will still see it.
    4) My HD space on my computer is almost full and I thought that I deleted the DV file off my >computer after transfering it to a backup drive. I went into Movies, and iMovies and deleted it... but >it must be stored somewhere else, because I have like 60 GB used still?
It might be in your trash. Try emptying your trash.

  • Firmware v2.1 bricks my camera - Need advice

I need advice. I bought the FS7 a month ago and it came with Firmware 2.0. I have been getting used to the camera and I think it's a great machine, still has some bugs, but manageable. The huge issue I have found it that I cannot upgrade to V2.1 without the camera stopping to function. I do the upgrade procedure as stated by Sony http://bit.ly/1E4o32D  Using a 32 GB Class 10 Sony SD card. The .md5 is correct. No lenses or adapters installed, no battery, no cards, not even the grip remote. I have tried several times, even after an ALL RESET. The procedure takes the normal amount of time in step one. When step one gets to 100% it restarts the camera and starts step 2. When step 2 ends, ussually after 9m45s, it pops a screen saying "Software Upgraded" with only one option to click on "Done". Then, I cannot push the "Done" because all buttons in the camere have ceased to respond. Nothing electronic in the body works. The on/off button does not turn off the camera, so I ended up taking the power cord out. After that the camera starts out normally but the buttons will not work. I finnally found out (I was thinking the camera was a brick by this point) that I could use the remote grip buttons. So I have ended up installing V2.0... five times I have tried it. It does not work. Any help please?

Hi Daniel, Thank you for the comments about my training video, but I'm afraid I don't have an answer about your firmware update problem if it's not the HOLD button.  To be honest, I have not even bothered to update to 2.1 myself yet.  Normally I try to keep my firmware updated, but in this case, I'm too busy and  I just don't care enough to bother with it.  None of the "improvements" interest me and I'm happy with the camera is running right now.   Yes, I am guilty of not following my own advice about keeping the firmware up to date. I guess you can either reach out to Sony or just keep using 2.0 until another update is released.  I know what I would do, but I don't want to offer any advice one way or the other. The scene files that can be downloaded from my website were created with v1.1 and I have not seen any reason to update them.  They sitll work fine for me and nobody has reported any issues. Good luck.

  • Need advice adapting page w/ onmouseover img swap to iPhone/iPad devices.

Need advice adapting page w/ onmouseover img swap to iPhone/iPad devices.
OK, we knew we needed to co-develop for touch-base devices, but this page forces the issue.
    See page at: http://www.sos.state.or.us/elections/pages/voterresources/civics-toolkit/index.html
The page has two-state graphical buttons: a small button for the standard state and a large button in response to the onmouseover event. Navigation occurs onclick. Of course, touch-based devices like iPhone and iPad have no mouse over. The iPad displays the button just fine. However, the iPhone only shows the image until it is clicked. After that it is gone, even when one navigates away and back again after clicking it.
I imagine we should detect what device is browsing and then load only the large, more informative buttons when we detect a smartphone or tablet device.
    What's the best approach?
    Thanks in advance!

So iPhone an iPad have ontouchstart and ontouchend - the information you provided says Apple implemented these events. Perhaps I should have specified that the page needs to work well on all touch devices, including non-Apple data phones.
Do you know if these touch events or some other solution is supported cross platform?
Just to be sure I understand, I
ditch the onmouseover event in favor of using the a:hover pseudo-class to swap images. This swaps for all devices.
implement ontouchstart/ontouchend for iPhone and iPad to create begin and end points for the image swap. This works for iPhone/iPad and no special condition is needed for a device with a mouse.
use onclick to trigger navigation. This works for all devices.
    Thanks!

  • Need advice regarding physical standby databases in rac environment on orac

need advice regarding physical standby databases in rac environment on oracle 10G r2
I like to have have a Primary ( 10 node RAC cluster ) shipping to a physical standby ( 3 node RAC cluster ) shipping using LGWR .
So I have a lot of questions
    1) What will be the performance overhead on the Primay if we are using LGWR SYNC option .
    2) Does the overhead depends on the physical distance between primary & physical
3)Do you recommend a seperate private network for shipping logs between primary and standby.
    4) I know that DGMGRL supports RAC only from 10g. So are there any know issues are bugs using DGMGRL is RAC environments.
    Thanks in advance
    -Satish

Generally you should have same CPU architecture and same operating system but it's not mandatory to have the exactly the same CPU model, the same number of CPU, the same RAM size etc.
Actually starting with 11.1 you don't need to have the same hardware setup: it 's even possible to have primary and standby database on different platforms: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28294/standby.htm#i72053.

  • Newbie needs advice on starting a project

Hi all.. New to DVD Pro, need the wisdom of experienced users before I waste a whole lot of time....
I've got a show mixed (2 cameras, multitracked audio mixed in logic express and synch'd) and rendered from final cut express to a self-contained QT movie, 16 GB, runs maybe 90 minutes, with a dozen or so chapters representing different scenes.
The intended product is a DVD for friends, families, actors, and support for grant writing to philanthropic organizations (it's a small grant-budgeted theater of disabled adults). The DVD should, of course "play all" and each segment.
I plan to have a main menu to choose "play all, scenes 1-6, scenes 6-12", not sure if I'll need 2 or 3 submenus....
    Here is the question.....
Shall I import as an asset just the whole show (which I think is what I should do), or should I break it and render each "chapter marker" from FCE to a separate .mov (the temptation would be that each segment could fade in and out from black, rather than cut in abruptly and end abruptly with a return to a menu). Alternatively, if I used segments with fade-ins and fade-outs, it would lose the continuity of the seamless "whole show" when the view chooses "play all".
That's why I need advice - because I don't know how it's all gonna work, what the options and capabilities are, but I felt like i needed to get beyond iDVD.
So thanks in advance for any words of wisdom!!!!
btw... it will be done on a late-2008 vintage 2.4 GHz core duo macbook pro with 2 GB ram, 250 GB hard drive, osX 10.5.?, dvd studio pro 4
    Thanks again! Peter

    If you want to be able to play just parts of your video as well as a "play all" then what you need are Stories. There is a complete tutorial on setting up stories at;

  • Need Advice on Netgear Router

I have a old snow base station that is connected by ethernet cable to my new wireless internet service. The cable goes to an antenna device that receives and transmits the internet signal. The isp wanted me to configure the base station to connect using PPPOE. That initially worked but the connection drops frequently during the day with a lot of effort expended in reacquiring it. They've had me switch the configuration by manually enter the ip address and dns numbers. This worked for a while but is now dropping again.
The isp has recommended using a netgear router which they claim many of their customers are using without issue. I need advice as to which model would be appropriate for a 3 story townhouse. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The old basestaions are notorious for being completely unreliable. I bought the entry level Netgear Router for about $25 and it has been flawless; providing 3 of my roommates with wirless access for over a year.

  • Need advice about certification: do J2SE 1.4 or wait for 1.5 to go out?

I need advice here! I am studing for Java Programmer certification (310-035) and I know now that the certification does not have any expiration date, instead it's version based. So, if I get now a J2SE 1.4 certification, soon it will be outdated... I guess!
Does anyone know or have any ideia of WHEN java 1.5 sdk will be avaliable, and anyone can tell me how long it will take for a new 1.5 programmer certification be avaliable for general public?

Do both. 1.5 is far enough away that you do not want to wait for it.
And besides, 1.5 has enough new stuff in it that you'll want to recertify anyway.

  • Need advice on on a Mac Pro 1,1 Media Center

I currently have a 2009 Mac Mini running as my home media center, but I recently came by a FREE Mac Pro 1,1 and have decided to repurpose it as my media center so I can migrate my Mac Mini to my bedroom TV where it will live an easy life doing nothing but run Plex Home Theater, Netflix, and EyeTV. This machine falling into my lap was also quite timely because my 4-bay Drobo is running low on available expansion and another Drobo isn't in the budget at the moment.
This vintage mac pro is running Lion 10.7.5, has 1 old and crusty 500GB hardrive, dual x5160 processors, 4GB RAM (one stick i'm pretty sure is toast judging by the red light and the kernel panics), and the standard NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB graphics card. It will be used primarily for the following: network storage for iphoto and itunes libraries, streaming video, Plex Media Server & Plex Home Theater, and Handbrake encoding. I also have a goal of safety of data for my movies, photos and music as this machine will supplement my current Drobo storage.
My plans are for a 128GB SSD boot drive installed in one of the PCIe slots and then to load up all 4 of the 3.5" drive bays with WD Green hard drives. I have also ordered 4GB of replacement RAM, so upon removal of the faulty unit I will have 7GB.
Here is where I need advice because I am not very familiar with RAID and the differences between hardware or software raid. Am I better off getting four drives of the same size and setting them up as RAID 5 (I think) using Apple's RAID utility or should I throw in three 1TB drives and then install a fourth 3TB or 4TB drive as a Time Machine backup for the other three?
Should I upgrade the OSX to the technically unsupported latest version? Or is it not worth the trouble for this application?
Also, is there any benefit to upgrading the graphics card to the ATI Radeon 5770? Would this yield an improved image quality? I am outputting to a Denon AV Reciever and subsequently to a 100" projection screen, if that makes a difference. I also noticed the 5770 has an HDMI port, wich would be nice, but not necessary since I can use a DVI converter and woud still need to use the optical audio out anyway.
    Much obliged for any input

My plans are for a 128GB SSD boot drive installed in one of the PCIe slots and then to load up all 4 of the 3.5" drive bays with WD Green hard drives. I have also ordered 4GB of replacement RAM, so upon removal of the faulty unit I will have 7GB.
PCIe cards that use or support SSD are not bootable until you get to 2008 (and that is limited too).
Green are not suited for any form of array unless say NAS and WD RED.  Better option would be 3 x 2TB WD Blacks in a mirror, and too many people only use two drives, well 3 is much easier safer and works better. Might want to invest in www.SoftRAID.com product even.
Best price and quality, got my 1,1 with 8 x 2GB (ideal is 4 or 8 DIMMs)
    2x2GB FBDIMM DDR2 667MHz @ $25
    http://www.amazon.com/BUFFERED-PC2-5300-FB-DIMM-APPLE-Memory/dp/B002ORUUAC/
With price of 250GB SSD $155 I'd go with that or stick with $89 for 128GB .

    Hi there, harleygirl.
A look around the internet and my previous knowledge indicates this is not an issue with firefox, but with how the server that the app is run on is incorrectly configured. To test this, please install an old version of firefox. You can download an older version from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all-older.html then try to visit the website again. Please let us know if it turns out that it works with version 3.6

Is there like in a hard drive of which iTunes can read the media, which will not require me to add and delete media onto iTunes, because of a lack of space on my laptop?

just get an ext HD, and point your itunes library to that drive so now you'll just keep all your media on this ext
