Need advice about Mac Pro and Windows networking

I currently have 2 machines at work: One HP Windows PC (high configuration) and a PowerMac G5 2GHz dual. I'm basically close to purchasing a new Mac Pro to replace both machines but need some advice. I do the majority of design work on the Mac. However I need the Windows PC to also do some design work but mainly use it to connect into the windows network at work. Basically I need to be able to access the network drives (which are set up with Novell Netware, with IPX turned off), Novell GroupWise email system and connect to the internet through the LAN. Can I do this with a Mac Pro, with either Bootcamp or Parallels? Is there any sacrifice in terms of performance in using Bootcamp or Parallels? The end result I want is similar to what I am doing at the moment - at the moment I use a PC to network and the Mac to design, side by side with each other. What I want is to do this from one machine, not two. (I also need the PC side of things as I need to use some software that isn't available on the Mac, eg. bespoke databases that run on PC). Is it easy to network under Bootcamp/Parallels? What pitfalls are there that I need to be aware of?

When your running Windows via bootcamp, you are essentially Running windows on a PC architecture. You will have all the same capabilities that you have now.
When you use Parallels to run Windows, you are running Windows as a virtual machine running within the confines of the Mac OS. The advantage is that you can run multiple OS's at the same time, and easily share files and data between them. The disadvantage is that the OS running within Parallels has a slightly performance hit, meaning you are not running as fast as the bootcamp version, but the performance hit is very slight. The only place that Parallels is lacking at the moment is in support of 3D or accelerated graphics. That is Parallels currently cannot make use of a graphics card 3D capabilities or advance GPU options. Parallels has stated their intent is to provide better graphic card support in the near future.
With all this in mind, I don;t see any reason why you cannot use Parallels for your Windows networking needs, and the Mac for your design needs, all at the same time. You will need of course to ensure you have enough RAM to support both OS's if you intend to run them at the same time.

  • Boot camp, MAC pro and windows XP

    Hi,
I am leading a programmers team, what we want is the faster machines to improve performance. Currently investigating an HP machine with windows XP 64 on it. But that doesn't work for us as most of hour programming tools do not work under XP 64. We cannot install 32 bit Windows because of the 2 Quad cores in the machines (according to IT).
Solution could be MAC pro, same specs (2 quad cores and 4 GB internal memory ) but with Boot Camp I can install XP 32. Or am I wrong? Or will MAC pro with XP 32 do not give an performance increase we can expect with 8 core?
    Robert

    Hi Robert,
for the IT guys: XP Prfessional does support up to 2 processors with multiple cores each.
XP Home does only support one processor with multiple cores.
The main problem with Mac Pro and 32-bit Windows XP or Vista (and possibly with the HP machine, too) is, that because the expansion slots are reserving quite some parts of RAM for their own Range of Adresses (even if no expansion card is in them) from the 4GB of RAM you will only get about 2GB for XP Pro 32-bit to see and use.
Only chance to use the full amount of RAM is 64-bit Windows and then Vista is the one to use, because Apple does not provide any drivers for XP-64 bit.
    Regards

  • I don't have clean ideas about Mac Pro and FCP in RT

Hi, I hope you can clarify my ideas about editing in RT.
I will purchase a HDV camera and I'd like to work in RT with FCP and Mac Pro.
Many people tell me I don't need any additional card and even I don't need RAID. Can you tell me if I can work in RT with FCP, Mac Pro and 4GIGs RAM only?
    thanks

When I have to export the film from Timeline will I have to do rendering?
RT editing in FCP, for the most part simply means that there are certain things you can see happen in the timeline without rendering... a certain number of simultaneous streams or tracks, certain transitions/effects/titles etc.
How much you can do RT is determined by a number of factors... the speed/power of your computer and drives, the video format your cutting... you'll get less cutting HD than you will cutting HDV or DV25. With the type of timeline you're describing you shouldn't have any trouble seeing what you're cutting RT.
However, regardless of how much you see RT, any effects, transitions etc. have to be rendered in order to output or export. In other words, even with DV footage, unless you've got a straight cut timeline with no titles or effects, you're always looking at at least some render time to get things finished. And as David has said, HDV also requires conforming (the whole timeline, not just effects) which, depending on the length of your show can take some time.

  • Question about Mac Pro and Adding GPU's

I am a recent convert from PC and I had a Dell system that had two Nvidia Cards in it, but I could not use each one to run one monitor because it was SLI and it could only clone my screen and not extend it. So I had to plug both monitors into one card, and I basically paid for one card that I never really used since I wanted two monitors.
I have two monitors hooked to my new Mac Pro, and my question is if I put in another Nvidia GT120 will each GPU run one monitor, and will they run as one big desktop just they way I have it set up now. Plus is there any benefit to having the dual GPU? I work on documentary videos and I use Adobe Creative Suite a lot. Will having the dual GPU speed up things like After Effects and Premiere. I know snow Leopard will help some, but in the mean time will an extra GPU help any?

As Hatter said, you can drive 2 monitors from 1 video card on the Mac. SLI/Crossfire doesn't work under OSX, so unless you need to run more than 2 monitors, there's no need to have more than 1 video card...
And I wouldn't say you got no use out of the 2nd video card in your dell. If you were gaming at all, you were probably getting better performance using the SLI than you would have gotten with just 1 card.
So, yes, under OSX, you can drive 2 monitors with the 1 card and it will let you either clone the desktop on to both displays (both show the same thing) OR stretch the display so the desktop stretches across both displays...
I'll be doing this with my mac pro to drive 3 monitors (using a 2nd video card)... Which should give me a HUGE desktop (I can't describe how much nicer it is to have tons of desktop space when programming or doing video editing...)

  • My Mac Pro and Windows, a view from a Windows noob

I have been using Macs for years. Yes I switched back in the XP days, but it has been so long....I forgot, infact I made my mother switch so I could offer her better tech support. Now she does not need tech support.
    Anyway, the point.
I have a 2008 Octo 2.8 MP with a current ATI 256mb video, 4GB memory, and a bunch of drives in the machine. My wife bought me Flight Simulator X as I was talking about it, and I decided to load it on my Pro.
I used Boot Camp to partition a drive that was 32 GB (thats all I needed) and took a chance at using XP again.
Everything went fine until I got to the partition screen on XP, I choose the partition Bootcamp made, and Windows came back with a goofy message about how I needed to do something to the partition, hit enter and do so...ok I did.
    Nothing, same partition layout.
So I made note of partition sizes, deleted mine, and tried to create a new partition out of the blank space, same message. After trying several times, I decided to try it with Vista Home Premium.
Same crap, told me how it would not work, etc etc.
So i decided to use an entire drive, backed it up, ran bootcamp, did the installer, and decided to try Vista. The install went fine.
My Retaill copy of Leopard did not want to load the drivers I needed, So I used my wifes iMac disc to install drivers for all things Apple on Vista. Fine, but why did it take me 3 hours to get my Bluettoth Mighty Mouse to work, and I still cant get the BT keyboard to work?
Why does Windows only see 2 of the 4 gb of memory I have?
Why does Vista seem slow? (even though it boots fast?. I mean it almost seems to ...well lag, seems like alot of OSX, and Linux with Beryl ripping off that does not really seem to work very well with Vista.
The drivers for this spankly fresh new ATI card had to be downloaded by Vista in order to even see the card, why is this stuff not on Leopard (Apple did not give me the restore discs for the Pro when they exchanged the machine for my faulty Pro)
Most importantly, why would XP argue with a partition Bootcamp made? Worked fine with my Mothers imac, she reported no issues, why am I the one to get them, how can I make a simple 32gb partition via bootcamp work with XP?

Lot of questions in there, almost need a list.
I never use BootCamp, just Disk Utility. Assistant is meant for single drive setup (iMac, MacBook) more than multi-drive system as this. And totally unnecessary or helpful with Vista.
Vista 32-bit only sees 1.9GB but SP1 or x64 will see more.
XP CD doesn't know or understand GUID and EFI partition tables.
Some Leopard DVDs (mostly upgrade based on BootCamp forum) didn't have the /BOOTCAMP directory on them.
The new Mac Pro is UEFI 2.1 firmware and has 64-bit drivers.
And always need to get the latest stand-alone drivers from ATI and Nvidia for Windows on Mac Pro.

  • Icloud sync only works between mac pro and windows outlook, not with iphone and ipad anymore

    Hi
Can anyone help me with my problem?
I do have icloud installed on my MacBookPro, on my Windows Outlook computer, on my iPad 2 and on the iPhone 4S.
Now until yesterday everything synchronized perfectly well.
Then I created some groups on my MacBookPro address book and since then (I believe that was when it started) icloud no longer synchs from and to the ipad and the iphone. It still works between the Mac and Windows Outlook.
On the iPad/iPhone I have tried everything but it still won't do. I have even reset the whole iPad and obviously lost all data and tried again. I all sometimes get is a few contacts back into the address book on the ipad. But only a limited number, not all.
Also, to delete the icloud account on the ipad/iphone is sometimes not possible. It just hangs and I can see the message "Deleting..." for ever.
    Anyone an idea?
    Thanks in advance!

One more comment. Wired connection seem to be stable neither. I have ping running to the Windows computer and after a couple of minutes, it gets broken.
However if I have both WiFi and cable connection to the home router and disconnect from cable (after ping is broken), I get the network to the Windows comptuer back. Nothing serious on the network change, I just get 192.168.1.x instead of 192.168.1.y as IP).
During this network switch I do nothing with the Windows computer.
This is not valid if I want to connect to the Windows computer via Microsoft sharing (smb://192.168.1.x), then it immediately breaks the connection. Can't get it back until Windows is restarted.
    Getting lost...

  • Mac Pro and Windows XP no more available

After updating to recent efi firmware, my Mac Pro can´boot into WinXPSP2 anymore. The Mac boots into WinXP, Monitor stays black and then to Mac restarts and boots into MacOSX.
The same System worked very well before upgrading the firmware.
At the same time I changed my analog Display to a 20" Cinema Display.
Installing a fresh WinXPSP2 with a normal 19" DVI Display or the 20" Cinema is possible.
But when I install the Macintosh Driver (Bootcamp 1.1.2) the System restarts between the process and than it´s only possible to boot into safe Mode in WinXP.
    Any suggestions?

try booting into safe mode and downloading the latest drivers for your graphics card from the manufacturers site (or downloading them in osx and stickin them on a cd). that will hopefully solve it.

  • Need advice about H.264 and Apple ProRes 422.

When exporting a "master file" I can encode the video as H.264 or Apple ProRes 422 (etc). The H.264 is more compressed but still in 1080p? Does this mean that I do not have to compress the file with "Compressor"? What is the advantage of using ProRes and what is the advantage of using H.264? I want of course the files to be as small as possible but still at the best quality. Any advice?
    Thanks.

ProRes is an editing format. If you are archiving a finished project, you can create an extremely high quality "print" with H.264. ProRes 422 will use approximately three times as much memory. ProRes 422(HQ) roughly four times and ProRes 4444 up to 10 times (compared to the size of the file FCPX will export as H.264).
FCPX exports (shares) H.264 in highest quality (over 45Mbits/sec [if needed] for 1080p), you have no options to adjust for smaller files (or lesser quality from FCPX.)
To get "as small as possible," you'll need to learn more about compressing video. As a comparison (to FCPX), YouTube limits a maximum bandwidth of 8Mbps (used to be 5Mbps -- I *still* compress to 5Mbps before uploading.) Even compressed this highly, H.264 provides excellent results. [Compressing in ProRes is going from 4444 down to 422 Proxy (not to be confused with proxy media used in FCPX which is 1/4 resolution, i.e. 960x540 for 1080, ProRes 422.) You cannot compress each of the different ProRes flavors individually.]
You'll need other software to compress further than FCPX.  I use Quicktime 7 Pro. Compressor is another way to go (Compressor will let you set "compression markers" so you can vary the bitrates through various sections of your work).  The way to figure out your compression level is to find a section (less than a minute) with the highest motion high contrast (and/or changing gradients) and export at different bitrates. Watch for "jpeg artifacts" (blocking) and once you've gotten past that, that's the bitrate you should compress to. (I've had some clips that required at least 20Mbps.) It just takes a little practice to get a feel for it.

  • Macbook Pro and Windows Network Printing

My family just had their PC's hooked up wirelessly on a network. Printing and everything else was all set up wirelessly also. The computer and the laptop work just fine, but for some reason we can't get my mac to hook up to the printing network. We can share itunes and internet, it's just the printing that won't work.
Any suggestions? We had a computer tech come out to help us set it up, but he couldn't figure it out either.
Thanks, I appreciate all the help I can get.

I sort of have the same problem. I have a desktop computer running Windows XP with all the latest drivers and an HP PSC 1315 All-In-One printer attached via USB to the desktop. I have been trying to install or add the printer using my MacBook via the home network (wirelessly via the router). I have tried several of the offered methods such as adding via windows and IP address. I do see the printer and upon adding it, it asks for a username and password, to my knowledge, we do not have one setup. I have also tried to add it as a guest. It still won't let me add and successfully print from my MacBook to the HP PSC 1315. Does anyone have an idea to solve this problem? Thank you very much.

  • Need advice about Satellite Pro M40

I wonder if anyone could advise me. We have just purchased 8 Smart boards for our school With these I ordered 8 SatProM40 laptops. When I ordered them I checked the spec as follows
    Toshiba SatProM40 - Celeron M360 1.4 GHz - RAM 256MB - HD 40GB - CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo - Mdm - Lan EN - FAST EN - Win XP Pro - 15.4" TFT.
I checked before I ordered that the RAM was 256 because I had heard that this is the mininimum recommended to run XP.
The laptops take almost 5 minutes to turn on and everything takes an age to work it is really frustrating and they are totally unusable for our school because all the lesson is taken up with getting the computers to run anything.
I checked the System information and found the laptops were running of 192Mb of RAM and rang the supplier. I was told that they used 64MB for the graphics card and therefore they had supplied a 256MB RAM computer.
My question to anyone who can help is:- is this normal practice. If I knew this I would have ordered a laptop with more RAM to compensate.
Any advice that would help us get our children working on their new computers would be gratefully received. Thank you.

    Hi Lisa
In my opinion Satellite Pro M40 is nice unit for school work but I agree with you that 256 MB is really minimum RAM and I recommend you to buy more 256 MB or even 512 MB, depending on your budget.
    Compatible RAM modules are:
    PC2700 256MB (PA3311U-2M25)
    PC2700 512MB (PA3312U-2M51)
Problem is that this unit use shared memory and that means that RAM will be also used for graphic. If there is someone who has good PC knowledge let them check all running processes. Many of them are useless and can be disabled. I have also noticed that preinstalled Antivir application (Norton) slow down running OS rapidly. If all units are not connected to the internet I recommend you to remove it.
By the way: there are many good antivir applications who runs well and dont slow down the running OS.
    Good luck!

  • Need advice about text formatting and hyperlinking

    Hi folks,
Thanks for reading my post. I am new at this and am using
Dreamweaver 6.0 for our website. We are putting together a
substantial directory on our site and were wondering if there was
    any way for us to:
    1. Not have to enter each hyperlink address into deamweaver
and have the software automatically recognize the link and point to
    the site; and
    2. Find the most efficient way to highlight a string of text
    quickly
here is an example of one of our many listings in the

Please run as fast as you can to the Adobe downloads page and
    get the
updater for DW6.0 -> DW6.1. There were quite a few
    anomalies that can catch
up with you unexpectedly in that first release version.

I'm not quite sure what you are asking here. As already
    suggested, it
sounds like you need to have your link information in a
    database, which is
then placed on the page but maybe not.
And 'highlight' a string of text quickly? Sorry - I don't
    understand what
    you are looking for....

  • Need advice about web services and Java beans

    Hi
I am very new to web services and to Java beans as well.
I am trying to understand if and how a web service can use functionality I have in a Java bean. I couldn't find any documentation I can use.
    For example:
    InitialContext ic = new InitialContext();
Adder adder = (Adder) ic.lookup("ejb/AdderJNDI");In a EJB client project (I'm working with Eclipse) if I add the EJB project to the build path, the Adder interface is recognized.
Theoritacally I thought I can do the same in a web service server project, but the Adder interface is not recognized.
Is there something I can read to understand how I need to use the EJB or implement the web service?
    Many thanks
    Sigal

Okay....I think I made some errors with the original scenario:
It basically comes down to this....I think. OCS Calendar has a set of Java classes and methods that provide an abstraction for their web services interface. I know how to create something to use these classes using an IDE like JDeveloper, but I'm not sure how that would work with HTML DB.
I've noticed that the SQL Workshop has a place for Java sources and classes, and I've heard mentions of PL/SQL wrapping. Is there a way to import classes into an HTML DB workspace, wrap 'em up, and access them via PL/SQL?
    Thanks again,
    Jonathan

  • About Mac Pro RAM and one "Nehalem" Processor 2.8 vs 3.2

    Hi,
Unfortunately I don't have so much money to spend but I find Apple products very high quality and in same time very expensive, specially for my country (Russia), according to statistic, it’s less then 1% of people that using Mac Pro in here, my country really poor :/
I never use Mac before, but I think that time is come and I would like to buy one on my birthday soon (22 November). I really tired of my crazy PC with Vista, it’s always bugs lags, and so on, it’s poor machine. I can buy new PC with i7, nice performances or buy Mac, but I think, Mac will be more quality and stable.
I'm web designer and programmer and using my PC with Adobe programs, normally Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, very rare with After Effect (1 day per month). Sometimes I’m playing games like Dragon Age or CS:Source, Starcraft2. But I got PS3, but unfortunately it’s connected to our main home TV, and I can’t play PS3 because all day this TV watching my family :/ lol
I’m not sure if there are any way to connect PS3 to TV and computer screen at the same time… but it’s another question.
Now about Mac I'm wondering of buying cheapest Mac Pro 2010:
    # One 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem”
    # 3GB (3x1GB)
    # 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive
    # ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB
    # One 18x SuperDrive
But at the same time, I wondering about how long time I will be able to use this Mac, and enjoy it before it will come too old. Because I just can’t spend and buy Mac every 2-3 years.
I’m looking forward to use it for 4-5 years I think or so. I know it’s very hard question and I’m not really sure if it’s right to discuss it, but I’m saying just what I think.
And maybe because of this, it’s better to order processor with 3.2Ghz, and a bit more RAM (8GB (4x2GB))? What you think?
And what will be the different between this 2 processors and more RAM? Because it will be +800 USD or so, and it’s very expensive for me (pay addition 800 Dollars), I just want to ask you if it will costs this money. Unfortunately I can’t spend more money on Mac to buy 6-core Westmare and more RAM But I think cheapest Mac, for my tasks already very powerful and awesome, what you think?
And if you’ll advice me, not to pay addition 400 USD for +0.4Ghz, and the different is very little, then what you think about addition Ram for stock MAC?

    Thank you hatter.
I'm appreciate for your help and answer, and this amazing links! They are very helpful.
I find some interesting information. And most interesting is SSD thing. But unfortunately it's very expensive for me
I got 2 ways to go, and I really confused now. I take a look what you said, about making a PC with i7. And here is what I find on our Russian market - only 1 company which offers high quality custom PC's with up to 3 years guarantee.

    Ok, that’s it.
DEPO - It’s our Russian company so I can’t give you link on English web page, but if you are interesting to view it, maybe with Google translate:

And I’m not really sure, if they offer high quality components, and I can’t check it.
I just don’t want to repeat same experience like with my previous computer – I bought top computer for very high price with top components, but everything was bugging, it’s terrible, I’m working with this computer 3 years now (it’s cored 2 duo with radeon x1900 and vista :S video card - without supporting DX10-11, 2 Hdd 500Gb RAID 0, - maximum lags – I cant’ even make a diagnostics… crazy). And I’m so sad about this computer, and I don’t want to repeat same experience. That’s why I wonder about Mac Pro or any other quolity PC, but price is too high, or if I buy just normal Mac Pro:
    • One 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem”
    • 3GB (3x1GB)
    • 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive
    • ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB
    • One 18x SuperDrive
    • Apple Magic Mouse
    • Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (English) & User's Guide
For 2499 USD, I still need to add more RAM, and It will costs 2874 USD with 8 Gb, but without changing Processor and/or HDD for SSD to speed up computer like **** and enjoy it every minute. I maximum can spend 3000-3200 USD for new computer. And all I want, to enjoy it’s stability and speed. To load photoshop in less then 5 seconds, working with AE a bit, 3dmax a bit, play a bit. Maybe I want to much :/
