Need Advice: Does Ram Upgrade Increase Performance?

I'm thinking of upgrading my ram from 512 to at least a gig. For those of you that have upgraded ram - what performance enhancements should I expect?
Will it run faster with more programs open? While iPhoto actually open quickly? Will rendering movies to quicktimes go quicker?
Just curious if this will actually improve some of the speed issues I have on my system.

yes...i have 2 gigs in my pbook and it is amazingly fast...it really depends on what you are doing...a good way to tell...
open up activity monitor while you have all of the programs that you normally run open
see how much free memory...you want to leave yourself with about 100 mb free
hope that helps

  • Need advice on RAM i need for MacBook Pro Retina? Will 4GB Be Enough?

    Hi Everyone,
    Basically I am currently saving up for my MacBook Pro Retina(13") and I need some advice about RAM. I am a 14 year old student who is starting there GCSE's in September and I have no idea how much RAM i will need; I will be using my new MacBook on video editing(not intensive just in iMovie), GarageBand(occasional), Safari and iLife and I am a little worried that 4GB of RAM is not going to be enough to handle this. I know that I cannot upgrade the RAM after i have purchased the Mac but I don't really want to pay over £200/$300 just for extra storage and RAM when i don't really need it, what do you all think? any ideas?☺️

    Because memory is not upgradeable, you should get as much as you can afford. 4 GBs is a minimal requirements. I would suggest at least 8 GBs. The same goes of SSD storage space. Get more if you can. At least 256 GBs if you can afford it. Remember it is not what you will do tomorrow, but a couple of years from now that really matters.

  • I want to use Final Cut Pro v 10 on my MacBook Pro and need advice with ram, video card or HD upgrade for optimal performance.

    I currently have 8GB ram and the stock video card and an ssd HD 240 GB.

    what Russ said…
    ext.HDD, for simple AVCHD tasks, I would recommend usb3 too…
    It's not state of the art hardware, but it's not chopped liver either.
    LOL Thank, you, Russ for phrase-of-the-day!

  • Advice regarding RAM upgrade for Snow Leopard

    Hello Everyone,
    I have a 2.4ghz White MacBook (purchased April 2008), with 160GB HD and 2GB RAM (can be upgraded to 4GB RAM as stated in the documentation/specs that came with the computer).
    I have installed Snow Leopard and all seems to be running smoothly at this point.
    Since Apple has laid the foundation for 64 bit processing with the release of Snow Leopard, looking forward, should I look into upgrading the RAM on my MacBook to 4GB to accomodate future applications that will be written in 64bit? The graphics chip on my computer is an Intel GMA 3100.
    Would doing this offer me any benefit? Or should I leave well enough alone?
    My goal is to keep this computer for as long as possible, in an updated usable state, and so far I like the Snow Leopard OS.
    Which memory cards (or sticks) are the best quality, and are compatible with the MacBook?
    Any sound advice would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks for reading,
    joe

    Whatever Apple sells OEM is pretty good stuff. I've never heard of kernel panics or incompatibility problems (duh!). It's usually a "fully branded" module from one of the major DRAM manufacturers like Hynix, Samsung, Elpida, or Micron.
    I would note that there was nothing on my factory installed Hynix modules that identified that it was sold or installed by Apple.
    One very good alternative (with the Intel chipset models such as yours) is Crucial. I've got a set in my MacBook (late 2007) and it's performed flawlessly. I knew what I was getting and purchased the 4 GB kit from Newegg, but some people insist on purchasing directly from Crucial.com with their compatibility guarantee. I'm sure they pretty much sell the same item. Crucial.com doesn't sell Apple specific laptop memory, but they do cross check it for compatibility.

  • Satellite E45t-A4300 - Does RAM upgrade void the warranty?

    I have a 2-week old E45t-A4300.  It comes with 6GB of RAM installed (2GB in one slot & 4GB in the other).   It is advertised as accepting up to 16GB of RAM. I purchased and want to install an 8GB DDR3L chip in one of the slots while keeping the 4GB RAM chip in the other, giving me a total of 12GB of RAM. However, I have just been told by a Toshiba technical support rep that adding RAM will void my warranty.  I've owned other laptops (Apple MacBooks and Acer) and was always been able to add RAM to them.  Is Toshiba taking the same path as the new MacBooks in which you can't add RAM? I initially called Toshiba support in order to learn how to open the bottom of the laptop in order to access to the RAM slots.  The rep said he couldn't tell me how to do so because opening the bottom would void the warranty.   There are no RAM access doors  (or HD access doors) on the bottom of the E45t.  Just 10 screws.  But removing themdoesn't free the bottom from the body of the laptop.   I would greatly appreciate any advice or comments.

    Hi Peter, Would I be able to get a PM about the E45T-AST2N01? I'd like to do the following if possible: Add more RAM (probably another 8GB)Replace the WLAN card with an 802.11ac card"Upgrade" to Windows 7.  Are there Windows 7 64 bit drivers available outside the scant few posted on the website? I know this could void the warranty and stuff ... blah blah.  I just need to know where the slots are.  I can do the rest on my own. Thanks, Super

  • I need advice on how to increase pixels (to 1000+) on images currently in the 6-700 range

    Hello,
    I need some assistance. I am new to Adobe Photoshop.  I need to increase the pixels to around 1000 from the current 6-700 the images currently have.  The photoprinting company I use told me I could do it on Adobe.  Any help would be appreciated.  Rich Shay [email protected]

    You may think you need a solution to change existing small images to make them larger, but keep in mind that what they may really be saying to you is that you need to prepare the images so that they end up with more than 600 to 700 pixels width to begin with, so that the images have enough detail that they'll look good and crisp in the prints.  To advise you further on doing this, you'll need to describe a bit about where you get your images initially and how you process them into these small versions.
    If you really DO need to upsample existing small images to try to give the visual impression they have more detail in them, just doing Image - Image Size isn't really going to help - they'll still look fuzzy.  BUT...  There are a couple of pretty cool (and reasonably expensive) plug-ins that do some fancy shenanigans to make images seem to have more detail than they really do...  You might want to try out either the Perfect Resize 7 plug-in by OnOne Software, or the Blow Up 3 plug-in by Alien Skin software.

    Adding RAM will help especially for graphics and number crunching applications. You will no longer get the out of memory warnings. Windows 7 is happier with more memory.
    Be advised that there are only two soDIMM slots for memory in a notebook. That means you will have to replace the current memory modules with two  2 GB memory modules to achieve 4 GB of installed memory.
    I recommend only purchasing guaranteed compatible memory modules.
    That way you won't have disappointments ( blue screens or black screens)  after new module installation and attempting to boot into Windows.
    The better memory modules are made by manufacturers such as Kingston (model  KTH-ZD8000B/2G • DDR2-667 / PC2-5300 • 1.8V)
    As for the cost: You will have to find your own local supplier by searching online .
    Best regards,

  • Does Statement.setMaxRows() increase performance?

    I need to execute a query, but only want the first row. Is there any
    performance advantage to using:
    Statement.setMaxRows( 1 );
    if ( ResultSet.next())
    // process 1 row
    versus simply just doing:
    if ( ResultSet.next())
    // process 1 row
    In other words, does this provide any kind of hints or optimization to the
    database? Or is that driver implementation specific?
    Thanks,
    Eric

    It makes little dif with SQL server for example and you'd be better off
    doing a "where min" join on the ordered column to get just one row (assuming
    it's covered by an index).

  • Crucial RAM Upgrade **Increase fan noise**

    I received my Crucial 2 x 512MB DDR2 RAM sticks for the Mac Pro today, fitted them according to Apple's recommendation and off I went.
    The system ran fine for around an hour before the fans started 'buzzing'.
    Has anybody else experienced increased fan noise from the Crucial sticks?

  • Need Advice: Hard drive upgrade!

    In todays world, files and programs are starting to require more and more space. I went the cheap route and bought a 13" MacBook, 1.83Gz base-line model, with a combo-drive (oh, how I wish I got the DVD-burner) and a 60Gb hard drive. But with all my stuff, 60 just isn't enough, so I was thinking of upgrading my hard drive to a some-what larger model. Now, since MacBooks follow a common laptop (notebook :P) standard for hard drives, and have a readily accesible hard drive bay, installation of the actual hard drive should be easy! But once the hard drive is installed, how do I move the entire contents of my old hard drive to my new one? That includes: my home folder, Mac OS X, programs, etc. And I would not like to instead get an external one, because it would be much easier (and convenient) to have all my stuff on one, main hard drive, not to mention Mac can't have the home folder on an external drive, and programs may not run, or even install, as intended when located on an external hard drive.

  • Need advice on configuration to enhance performance

    Hi All.
    We got a cluster of two wlcs3.2 with wl5.1sp6, and two wl5.1sp9 as proxies
    (running on winNt at the moment).
    My question is: is it worth putting the images/css/js (namely: static)
    content on the proxies, and then refering to them (from the jsp) as <img
    src="http://www.mysite.com/images/etc/etc>?
    Should there be any difference at all?
    TnX,

    Yes, it is worth it. Just eliminating the extra hop is worth it.

  • MacBook Pro 1 GB RAM upgrade...which type?

    Hi,
    I am interested in the MacBook Pro, but need some advice on RAM upgrades.
    What is the difference between the 2 types of RAM offered on the Apple site?
    1 GB 667 DDR2 2x512 SO-DIMMS
    1 GB 667 DDR2 1 SO-DIMMS
    I would only be able to afford one of these above options and would appreciate any insight that anyone could offer.
    Thanks much!

    A Macbook Pro is only upgradable to 2gb and has only two SO-DIMM slots Ram ie. 2 * 1 GB ram modules.
    If you opt for - 1 GB 667 DDR2 2x512 SO-DIMMS - you use up both the slots(each with a 512 mb ram)
    If you opt for - 1 GB 667 DDR2 1 SO-DIMMS -only one is used up. and one it still free.
    and when you got the bucks for an upgrade, or when the OS is calling for one, you can pop one in. And max it to 2GB
    So, a 1 GB 667 DDR2 1 SO-DIMMS is the best deal.

  • What is Maximum possible RAM upgrade?

    I have a Macbook Pro , 2011, 8.2 , Core i7 , 2.4 GHz with 4 GB RAM. I need maximum possible RAM upgrade. I checked in www.eshop.macsales.com. They offer 16GB 1333 RAM.  As it is about 150$, I want to confirm if the information is correct.

    The max capacity you can currently stuff into two sticks is 16GB and the 2011 models can happily use it all. Speedwise you have to stick with the speed built into the logic board: 1067 MHz for 2010, 1333 MHz for 2011 and 1600 MHz for 2012. Faster RAM won't benefit the system and may even lead to timing issues and weird glitches. For the same reason, it is best to use Mac-certified RAM, that ensures the correct CAS timing.

  • Mac Mini (Late 2012) RAM Upgrade

    Hello everyone!
    I just got my first Mac machine, a Mac Mini i5 with 4GB of RAM. So far I'm loving it, everything seems to work flawlessly, updates are painless, etc. (I come from the PC/Linux world so I feel like a child with a new toy) however I think I need a small RAM upgrade.
    I was looking for some cheap modules and I came across with these Kingston KTA-MB1600/4G modules that, according to the mini memory specs, should work.
    http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/configurator_new/partsinfo.asp?root=us&LinkBack= &ktcpartno=KTA-MB1600/4G
    AFAIK the memory specs for the mini are:
    PC3-12800 DDR3
    Unbuffered
    Non-parity
    204-pin module
    1600 MHz
    I was wondering if any of you have tried these or any Kingston modules on your Mac's? Do you agree with me that these should work on my mini?
    I'm sorry if this a stupid question or an obvious question but I'm not 100% sure. In the PC world I would probably buy whatever that match the specs.
    Thank you!

    upgrading mac mini ram is the easiest thing in the world
    for 16 gig i agree with Randy u can buy in
    http://www.macsales.com , or go to corsair...
    so far it work flawless!!
    but by the way consider the mac mini problem with the hdmi and etc if u still want to buy it,,,
    i think u should wait a bit and gather more info
    but that's just me
    ciao.

  • Does increasing ram improves game performance?

    does increasing ram improves game performance of my MBP 13" 2012??

    Using Activity Monitor to read System Memory & determine how much RAM is used
    Adding RAM only makes it possible to run more programs concurrently.  It doesn't speed up the computer nor make games run faster.  What it can do is prevent the system from having to use disk-based VM when it runs out of RAM because you are trying to run too many applications concurrently or using applications that are extremely RAM dependent.  It will improve the performance of applications that run mostly in RAM or when loading programs.
