Need advice for erasing disk/partition

Hey everyone,
I currently have a Mac Pro that is partitioned with both Lion and Snow Leopard. I'm trying to un-partition the computer and wipe it clean - thinking of updating to Mountain Lion but would like to stay with Snow Leopard for now if possible.
I erased the Lion partition by using Disk Utility but now I'm wondering what the best way to clean the computer is.
When I go into Disk Utility and go to "Erase" it won't let me select Snow Leopard. I went to Disk Utility Help and it says "To erase your computer’s startup disk, you must start up from another disk, such as a Mac OS X installation disc."
This means that I need a hard copy of an OS installation disc before I can erase/clean Snow Leopard? Is it possible to buy the disc from Apple or are the OS systems only available for download through the app store now? Are they only selling Mountain Lion?
Any tips or advice here is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
~ Hugo

What is wrong with your 10.6 Snow leopard installation that it needs to be "cleaned"? Macs generally do not need to be cleaned, as they do not accumulate filth.
How did you get 10.6 snow Leopard onto your computer in the first place?
What model mac Pro ?

Is there something specific in TP4 that you want to use TP4 - as John suggests, it might be an idea to use the full production release (11g). As for resources for information you can check out
[Jdev Home|http://otn.oracle.com/products/jdev] this page contains links to the developers guides and various how tos etc etc. The follownig page is also useful and is focused more to those who are less familiar with Java

Hope this helps and maybe if you can be more specific we can better guide you.

  • Do I need to change boot disk partition types - if so how?

I set my boot disk up with several partitions, one of which is the Apple_UFS partition type. I now want to be able to use if for Mac data files - pdfs, word docs, etc. (I'm running 10.4.11 on a powerpc - when I can afford an Intel macbook, I'll upgrade to Leopard).
    I have some questions:
    1) Will puttting Mac files on a Apple_UFS volume cause problems (rsource & data forks in files)? (If its OK, then skip to Q6 &Q7 which I'd like to know for future reference).
    2) Should I change the partition type (to Apple_HFSX)? There's no data on it now, so that's not a problem.
    3) Disk Utility won't let me change partition type, only change the name. Diskutil has the command " eraseVolume format name device", but I suspect that format is the current format, not a new format - please correct me if I'm wrong.
    4) pdisk interactive mode has the "t" command which looks like what I want.
    5) after the partition type is changed, I presume I then need to use newfs_hfs -
    6) I am confused about the device/partition name - "diskutil -l" shows "/dev/disk0" with the partition I want to change as "disk0s11". "pdisk - l" shows "/dev/rdisk0" and the partition number as 11. The "newfs_hfs -h" gives an example of "newfs_hfs -v Untitled /dev/rdisk0s7". So in my case, is my device "/dev/rdisk0s11"??
    7) I have an external firewire drive that also is partitioned. "pdisk -l" and "diskutil list" give different outputs - partitions 1-9 are the same on both (Apple stuff), but pdisk show several "Apple_Free" partitions that diskutil ignores - pdisk has 23 total partitions, hdutil has 18. So which number do you use for the disk-identifier?
Thanks for any help on this confusing matter.

The regular versions of PSE 10 have the same kind of automatic updating (just go to Help>Updates and let the updater do its thing) that full Photoshop has. You can update the raw converter in the app store version, but since apple requires that everything in app store programs has to live within the app package itself, the file paths are different, so unless adobe updates the whole program so you can update through the app store, the adobe updater doesn't know what to do. You can do it manually, but it's kind of complicated to dig everything out of the adobe update, not as simple as it was in older versions of PSE.
This thread over at the adobe forum gives you the general process for updating the app store version:

  • Need advice for escalating warranty repair

    hi all,
around easter I noticed my daughters 2007 C2D macbook(white) developing hairline cracks in the backcase near three stress points, near the tabs on both sides that hold it off the topcase and in the middle from constant opening of the machine. the local genius said applecare would cover it but she needed it for school so I delayed sending it in. My Bad. She comes home with a chip in the topcase and about 12-14 dead pixels in the display. Sent it off for repair and Apple said the screen showed signs of abuse( not completely out of the question) due to one section that seems to have been "bruised" and is leaking. Unless she or a spurned lover took an icepick to the screen I don't see how she caused over a dozen pixels scattered all over the display to fail but I am not an engineer. The problem is they will not perform the case repair unless I agree to the $800 LCD replacement. The reason being they can't perform a partial repair. The way I heard it is until I replace the LCD at my expense apple in unable to do any warranty repairs and i have 14 Months of Applecare left. My local apple store is closed for renovations or I would go there where they recognize me for advice. Powerbook Medic quotes $250 for screen replacement. should I do that and then resubmit the machine to Apple for case repair? Is there a Phone number for customer service other than tech support I could try to escalate this case with? The only one I see is the Apple Store CS for orders and such. Anyone have any thoughts or recommendations?
    Thanks,
    Frank

  • Need advice for wireless iTunes access (have router already)

I'm having a hard time sifting through all the info to find the best solution. I have a MacBook Pro that I'll soon be upgrading to Lion from Snow Leopard, as well as an iPhone, with a second iPhone soon to enter the family. We also plan to get an iPad. We actually have an older iMac that we won't be upgrading, so we're going to move our iTunes library from the iMac over to the MacBook (basically turning the MacBook into our primary computer). We want to be able to play iTunes without having to keep the MacBook plugged into wired speakers. That seems a bit pointless.
We have a wireless router already (a D-Link), so I don't need AirPort Express to act as a router. (We have a 1 bedroom condo, really no reason to extend the network or anything like that.) We have a printer that works wirelessly with the MacBook already. All I'm really trying to figure out is the best way to set it up so that we can have iTunes on the MacBook, playing over speakers (either the ones we currently have our iMac plugged into, or our stereo speakers that we have our TV setup with). Ideally if we could do the same from the iPhone and (future) iPad, that would be great, too.
Does it make any sense for us to get an AirPort Express to do this, or would it just be more straightforward to get wireless speakers that can work over Bluetooth (like the Creative D200 ones in the Apple store)? I feel like the AirPort has the potential to be overkill for our usage, especially since I can't seem to figure out if you can use AirTunes with an iPad, and we don't need it for the wireless printing functions.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Thanks Leo! Yeah, I was confused about the 2500 series too because they push the Flex 7500 so much as the "real" solution.
Now that I'm looking in the right spot, it looks like NCS Prime Infrastructure is for the serious folks and we could probably get away without it, right? So that would leave the access points, the controller, and the basic network stuff.

  • Need advice for installing flex application in touch screen Kiosks

    Hello,
We have a requirement in one of our project to create touch screen interfaces and I am intending to user Adobe Flex for the development and run them in Adobe Air because, definitely it saves development time and great look and feel.
However, I need advice on how to connect the application to a touch screen events like we do on  Keyborad and mouse events like, click() or onFocus etc.
    Please advice.
    Best Regards,
    Jai Kishan Shah

Bar Code Scanners are no different than keyboards in my experience.  It just sends the text to whatever application is open. Integrating it with Flex requires no effort.  You just have to be sure that Flex is the current application and the field you want to put the data in is given focus.
In a point of sale application with very specific use case and limited interface, it is easy to force the app to give focus to the input field that needs to accept your input.
Credit card swipers work the same way.
I don't know about a weighing scale, but I bet it is very similar.  If not, you may want to use Java for scale integration and then use Merapi to integrate with the Java applet.

  • Need advice for SAP installation on External  Hard disk

    Hi Gurus,
I have HP laptop with configuration of 512 MB RAM and 50 GB hard disk...i recently bought 250 GB segate external  hard disk for SAP installation...My doubt here is if i  install SAP in external hard disk and will it work properly if i connect my laptop?
    ur advice is much appreciated
    Regards
    Dinesh

    Hi Dinesh,
I have installed SAP on external harddisk.
    And it will work properly.
But i think you need to increase your RAM.
After installation, please keep in mind one thing.
You will have to attach your external harddisk before your machine starts, because your OS will be in internal harddisk, so SAP and oracel services won't be able to run without external hard-disk.
and in case you attach after system startup, please start all services.

  • Need advice on Hardware & Disk Setup for Premiere Pro CS6

I am about to purchase a Mac Pro and after reading threads on hardware requirements & different disk setups I am still a little unsure which way to go. If someone could point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Firstly this system will be used primarily for the following tasks: Editing AVCHD media (Sony HDR-XR550) and burning to disk with light editing, Creating Web Videos from AVCHD Media, editing images in Ps & Lr. This is strictly a hobby for me and I will also use the machice for some light AutoCad work.
The current system specs are as follows:
    3.33GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon processor, 16GB (4x4GB) RAM, Bay 1: 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s, Bay 2: 512GB SSD, Bay 3: 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s, Bay 4: 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s, ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB, Two 18x SuperDrives.
    My questions are:
    1.     Reading the thread on Generic Guidelines for Disk Setup I plan to use the 4 Disk setup described. If I only have 1 SSD, should I make it C: D: E: or F:? My priority would be the editing speed rather than the exporting speed.
    2.     If I can stretch my budget to include another SSD then again, should I make it C: D: E: or F:?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

After much deliberation I agree with you and Jim. I am not sure what I was thinking!

  • Need advice/opinion on disk repair

My computer crashed...twice. Upon the advice...and help...of Apple, I did a complete reinstall of my harddrive. It seems to be working well now, but when I run Disk Utility, I get the following message:
A few lines of that just say 'checking' this and that
The last line says, "The volume MacIntosh HD appears to be okay."
Then in bold, it says, Repair attempted on 1 volume.
Then in red, it says 'HFS Volume repaired."
Apple tells me that it should NOT continue to say the repair has been attempted and repaired. That really means there is still something wrong. The only message that means everything is okay is "The volume MacIntosh HD appears to be okay." I have run disk utility a number of times, I continue to get the same message, even though I theoretically have a new HD.
I then ran Disk Warrior. It corrected a bunch of things with iMovie, and now I'm getting a clear report. Disk Utility however still gives the same message that Apple says indicates something is wrong.
Yesterday we put in new memory and checked the capacitor. There was only one that we could see (someone said there were two), but there was no cracking or leaking.
My question: Is there something wrong? Restored hard drive, computer seems to be running well, Disk Warrior corrected everything and gives a clean report, capacitor seems okay, but Disk Utility continues with the strange message that Apple says may indicate a problem. Is there cause to worry? Should I do anything else?
Thanks for the help! You people are fabulous; I am so grateful for this board.
Oh, yes, my eMac is almost two years old. I have Panther still.

I'd put a lot more trust in Disk Warrior than in the Panther version of Disk Utility, so as long as Disk Warrior is giving you a clean bill of health, you shouldn't need to worry and can just blame it on some garbled Disk Utility setting. As a WAG, it might help to open Applications> Utilities> Console, View all logs, select ~/Library/Logs/DiskUtility.log, and delete that, then see what re-running Disk Utility> Verify Disk shows.

  • Need advice for Mountain Lion uninstall

Are there instructions someplace on how to uninstall Mountain Lion and restore Snow Leopard from the original disk?
I don't want to do a clean install.

The things you say are slow in ML should not be slow, so there's probably something else going on there. But that is neither here nor there, as it sounds like you need to downgrade for other reasons... merely a data point for the future.
To restore from your Time Machine backup, you won't want to install 10.6 first and then restore, that all happens in one fell swoop. There's a good tutorial on how this is done here:
How do I restore my entire system?
And it would be an exceedingly good idea to make another backup, either by copying important documents to a different external hard drive (not to your TM backup drive) or using something like Carbon Copy Cloner. If you only have the one backup, then as soon as you erase your hard drive in preparation for restoration, the TM backup becomes the only copy, and if something should go wrong (for example, suppose the backup drive died before the restore could complete), you would be quite screwed. Make sure you've always got two backups minimum.
Finally, I would recommend upgrading all that old software over time. Sooner or later, your machine will fail for one reason or another, and you will not be able to use Snow Leopard (and, thus, any of that software) on any currently-shipping machine. If you don't upgrade your software before that happens, you'll be stuck with buying old second-hand hardware, or having to upgrade it all at the same time as buying a new machine.

  • Needed, Advice for Graphics Card & OSX Capabilities

    I have a Dual 1 GHz Power PC G4 (Mirror Door) tower from 2002 (s/n#XB24706DMMA) (Model#M8570)
The graphics card is the original ATI 64MB AGP slot. Can anyone recommend a better card 128MB or 256MB?
Also, Currently I run OS 10.3.9 which is Panther.
Does anyone know how far up I can go with the Operating System? Tiger? Leopard?
    Thank you for any advice.

Hi Scott, see japamac's page about G4/G5 Graphic cards...
    http://www.jcsenterprises.com/Japamacs_Page/Blog/4B4B7BA2-7ABB-47F1-87AC-B03D379 42BEE.html
As far as OSes go, either Tiger or Leopard...
    Tiger Requirements...
To use Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, your Macintosh needs:
    * A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
    * Built-in FireWire
    * At least 256 MB of RAM (I recommend 1GB minimum)
    * DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation
    * At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode 2 Developer Tools (I recommend 20GB minimum)

See Tom's, (Texas Mac Man), great info on where/how to find/get Tiger...

    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
    * Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
    * 512MB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
    * DVD drive for installation
    * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
You have to call Apple & see if they still have Leopard available.

  • Need advice for an application that restricts access to other applications using a smart card

    Hello everybody,
I am developing a system that uses a smart card reader attached to a USB port of a PC.
What the system should provide is:
When computer boots up and shows the users login screen, a user, previously registered, can use his smart card to access the system, instead of entering his password
Once the user is logged in, when he tries to launch an application, which has previously marked as "secured", a dialog box is shown indicating that the user has to present his smart card. If the smart card has access to the application, the application
is launched, otherwise an error message is shown to the user and the application is not executed.
I develop in C++ and C#. I have already created a library (in Visual C++) that manages the smart card reader and provides the card presented to it.
Now I am developing the applicastion (in C#) that will configure the security (assigning cards to users and applications).
Concerning this, I have 2 questions regarding each point above:
Is it possible to create the centralized application that lists all users and allows to assign cards to them? Then, when the users login screen is shown, the system must access that data before logging in, so that it can check which card was presented and
what user it corresponds to. I have seen in laptops, that have embedded fingerprint readers, a user must login to his account first and then he can register his fingerprints. In fact, what I need to do is something similar but with smart card reader instead
of fingerprint reader. So, perhaps, user must login into his account first and then he will be able to add his card and store that information somewhere (in windows registry maybe).
How can I launch my application when other application is executed but before its interface is actually shown? this is similar to what antivirus programs do, because they check the executable before it is actually ran. What is the best method to address
the application? by executable file name? process name? or other? if the best is by process name, how can I know the process name without actually running the application?
Well, that is all what I need to do. Please advice regarding this subject.
I look forward to hearing from you,
    Best regards,
    Jaime
    Powered by C++

    > what was the guidance?
    1. Research other software that does similar things (not just exactly the same) as you need. If you like something in their solutions, copy it :)
The only software I know that does that is an antivirus, but I am unlucky to find some code in c++ that allows to intercept the program execution before actually executing it.
    2. If a kernel driver would fit in your solution, go for it (google for what is available for free, or find a consultant to write it for you).
There are a lot of information about kernel drivers, but the question is, is that really the solution?
Otherwise, you can just hide the application from user's reach and substitute the executable in shortcuts, etc. to run your program instead.
Definetly this is not the way to go
What is the best method to address the application? by executable file name? process name? or other?
By executable file name, like in the Windows Applocker, I think. Processes do not have names (they are artifact of Task manager and debugging tools, to represent the processes for user somehow). Or, only by the filename part of the full path.
    I agree with that
if the best is by process name, how can I know the process name without actually running the application?
When the user runs the application, the driver will detect this and do its magic.
I have found this page: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3556048/how-to-detect-win32-process-creation-termination-in-c. They mention WMI, but I will study it tommorow... it is so late for today :-)

  • Need advice on Repairing Disk Permissions...

I need some input from those who know how to Repair Disk Permissions (under Disk Utility, for those who don't know).
Basically, I lost a TON of my Access and Privileges on my G4 recently--which I really only noticed after iTunes would no longer let me import anything (no matter how many times I tried changing the Ownership & Permissions on my Music folder's Info section)--which, I might add, I suffered due to a virus caused by Limewire. As had been suggested to me, I Verified Disk Permissions, and saw that I had a TON of problems listed on my startup HD. So I'm now seeking ways to repair them.
Now, the most obvious way is using the Repair Disk Permissions program (which I've actually never had to use before). However, under OS10.3.9, when I select the Repair Disk Permissions on Disk Utility, in listing all my Drives available, it actually shows the drive in 2 formats/pictures:
    1) the actual technical name/manufactor model/GB size of the drive (on top), and
    2) the Desktop name and Icon picture of the Drive as it appears on my desktop.
This confuses me: as you can guess, the startup Drive in question is only partioned as one. So on Disk Utility, which of these 2 pictured drives do I have to highlight and Repair Disk Permissions to (i.e. 19GB Maxtor32049 Vs. 'HAL')?
Also, for those of you who have used other means (programs) to change Disk Permissions, which would you recommend? For example, I got a program from Versiontracker called BatCHmod, but I don't know if something like it is any safer than just using Repair Disk Permissions. Because unfortunately, I'm running out of room on my disk, and don't have nearly enough space on my other drive to hope to back the whole Drive up to.
    Please help!!!

    Hi phasmatrope!
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk HAL, in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP until the only message it reports is:
"We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util.
    New permissions are 33261"
This is a status message and not a cause for concern. You may safely ignore it.
    Or these:
"We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/jobs. New uid is 1"
"We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/spool. New uid is 1"
Again, these are status messages, which appeared after Security Update 2005-001.
There may be others that you can ignore. Complete lists at link below.

When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".
