Need advice on fast remote access to Xserve

Does anyone know of a product for Xserve that is similar to Terminal Services?
We have people in other states that need to log in remotely and prefer not to use a VPN. Thanks

There is no direct equivalent to Terminal Services, at least as far as having multiple remote users run multiple graphical environments on the server. The Mac OS supports a single graphical environment, so even though it's possiblet to have multiple users looking (graphically) at the server, they'll all see the same thing, which is hardly conducive to them all working on separate projects.
That said, there are some options, but the viability depends on quite what you're trying to do with the server, what apps you're trying to run, and what problems you're trying to solve.
Either way, this doesn't absolve you from needing a VPN system. That's needed to secure the connection over the internet. This applies to Terminal Services just as much as to any other protocol.

  • Need help setting up remote access please

I have a new server 2012 network with a server built specifically for remote access
I need to set up simple remote access to LAN pc's, published apps, and to manage domain remotely
this is only a test setup and I want some security but first want teh basics setup then I can lock down
I ran the wizards and believe most things are done correctly when I added the roles, and firewall is allowing access to that server.
when I try to connect from external I get the remote server's default IIS web page, no remote access options
is there a simple checklist to test services internally and test the web page access internally?
I am not sure what information you may need so please ask for any details that will be helpful
Remote Gateway, licensing, web access and certificates have all been configured using the wizards
    David Sheetz MCP

    Hi David,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Initially to remote access the application through RD Web we need to use https://servername/rdweb. Also please check the following setting.
In IIS: IIS Sites --> Default --> RDWeb --> Pages --> Application Settings --> DefaultTSGateway:
Set that to your RD Gateway access URL.
    Then restart IIS.
Your RemoteApps will then be able to find the proper gateway inbound.
When you created your collection bring up its properties and make sure the URL is specified in RD Gateway settings too. This generates the correct settings in the RDP files.
In addition, please checkthis article for information. Also please see whether you
have configured RD RAP and RD CAP properly and try to uncheck the option “Bypass RD Gateway for local address” under deployment properties and verify the result.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Remote access for Xserve G4 shared folders

I have an Xserve G4 OS 10.2.1 at my office and I want to configure it so I can tap into our shared file folder from somewhere away from the office. How do I do this? Do I need additional software? Can it be done at all? If so, is it more prone to being hacked into?

There are two ways of doing it. Insecurely and securely.
Insecure - setup port forwarding to allow port 548 through your router to the server. Now you can use the Finder on a remote machine to mount AFP shares on the server.
It's simple, but horribly insecure - anyone can hit the server, the link isn't encrypted and it just isn't the right approach.
Secure - setup a VPN and use the VPN client on the remote machine to connect to the office network. Now the remote machine is, essentially, part of the office network and can do almost anything that a machine in the office can do, including access file shares, print, etc.
It takes a little more setup, both on the server and the router, but it is far more secure since everything is encrypted, and it gives full access to the office network.
Check the Server documentation on setting up the VPN - it's little more than a few checkboxes in Server Admin, but you'll need to verify the router configuration, too.

  • Need advice for wireless iTunes access (have router already)

I'm having a hard time sifting through all the info to find the best solution. I have a MacBook Pro that I'll soon be upgrading to Lion from Snow Leopard, as well as an iPhone, with a second iPhone soon to enter the family. We also plan to get an iPad. We actually have an older iMac that we won't be upgrading, so we're going to move our iTunes library from the iMac over to the MacBook (basically turning the MacBook into our primary computer). We want to be able to play iTunes without having to keep the MacBook plugged into wired speakers. That seems a bit pointless.
We have a wireless router already (a D-Link), so I don't need AirPort Express to act as a router. (We have a 1 bedroom condo, really no reason to extend the network or anything like that.) We have a printer that works wirelessly with the MacBook already. All I'm really trying to figure out is the best way to set it up so that we can have iTunes on the MacBook, playing over speakers (either the ones we currently have our iMac plugged into, or our stereo speakers that we have our TV setup with). Ideally if we could do the same from the iPhone and (future) iPad, that would be great, too.
Does it make any sense for us to get an AirPort Express to do this, or would it just be more straightforward to get wireless speakers that can work over Bluetooth (like the Creative D200 ones in the Apple store)? I feel like the AirPort has the potential to be overkill for our usage, especially since I can't seem to figure out if you can use AirTunes with an iPad, and we don't need it for the wireless printing functions.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Thanks Leo! Yeah, I was confused about the 2500 series too because they push the Flex 7500 so much as the "real" solution.
Now that I'm looking in the right spot, it looks like NCS Prime Infrastructure is for the serious folks and we could probably get away without it, right? So that would leave the access points, the controller, and the basic network stuff.

  • Need Advice: Can no longer access the "settings" of my Linksys WRT310N router.

Hello, I can no longer get to the web-based utility or "settings" page of my router. Internet works fine and I am connected at 270Mbps.
Using 192.168.1.1  It worked the first couple times and now I get an Explorer error saying "Internet Exporer cannot display the webpage"
I ran all the relevant "cmd" commands I could find, and they all return with 192.168.1.1  I also unplugged the router and plugged it back in and rebooted PC.  Still the same issue.
I had a Vista service pack update Windows a few days ago. could this have changed things in Explorer?

  • Need advice on remote access

    Hi guys, need some advice.
I have a home network of four wired PC's, two laptops and a small home server, running windows home server 2011. All machines can access the shared files etc via the launch pad, and we have tried remote access via the xxxxxxx.homeserver.com address that
    microsoft provided, which works fine.
I've spent the weekend installing sharepoint services 3.0 and set up family members as user etc and we can all access the shared calendar etc. internally, however I would like to be able to access the calendar remotely, either via mobile phone or browser
    on a PC.
I've been searching the web for answers, but so far can't seem to find an idiot proof way of doing this, and would welcome advise on the best way to achieve my goal

  • Advice needed on fast streaming/access from external HD (Video/Music apps)

    Hello,
I'm a computer musician and have reached the max on my internal SATA drive, and thus I'm looking for an effective, extra-fast external HD capable of intense sample streaming (i.e. quickly accessing many small files from different parts of the drive at once). I'm not looking for write speed, as that does not concern me. The main concern is "read speed."
In my search I came across this eSATA drive from segate which seems to have been designed with my needs in mind: http://www.creativemac.com/articles/...e.jsp?id=53423
However, it takes PCI 2.2, while us dual G5 users only have PCI-X, correct? Does this mean this particular eSATA drive will not work in my system? Are there any eSATA drives/enclosures that were designed specifically for PCI-X? Is eSATA worth it when compared with FW800 in my line of work? (I already own a Lacie FW88 drive as a backup drive, but can switch its application if needed). What is the best technology for fast streaming/access from an external HD?
I'm sorry if this topic has already been covered, but in my search I was unable to find any topics specifically regarding this type of use of an external HD.
I thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

I am after some advice on how to access photos on an iPad that were synced from a now failed laptop? The question stems from a need to return my current iPad having just taken delivery of a new unit. Thanks

If you have a dropbox account, there's a free app (probably more) that syncs photos to your dropbox account - picbox.
There's also PhotoSync that syncs photos to/from a number of different services and devices.

take off back cover from MBP
    detach HD
    download fresh Ubuntu Live CD
    burn it
install Mac HD into desktop. Be careful to not short circut something.
    find USB stick

    boot from Ubuntu live
go to Macintosh HD - Users - your user - documents
    find needed document there
    insert USB stick

  • Desperate help needed to configure WVC210 for remote access?

Hi, I'm new and desperately need some help on setting up my WVC210 for remote access.
I manage to setup and see images from my WVC210 using my home LAN via both wired and also wireless.
    I have 2 questions:
    (a) for wireless connection, i only manage to get connection to my WVC210 if i disable the wireless security from my router. But that means i'm opening my wireless LAN to everyone. How can i still get connection to the camera if i enable the wireless security from my router. (FYI: my router is 2Wire ADSL  from Singnet Mio)
    (b) how can i get connection to my WVC210 from outside or in my office? I type in the camera Fixed IP address (displayed on the front screen) on the web browser, by it shows a error page. Is there some setting that i might need to adjust ?
    Pls kindly help me
    Thank you.

    Bernard,
For Item (2) is there any difference between the camera built-in dyndns updater versus the software updater? I am under the impression that the software updater is easier to manage.
The biggest difference for you is that the camera always stays at the same location, and the laptop goes with you. Every time you access the internet from a different location with the laptop the software updater is sending the new IP address to dyndns.com. This causes you to lose access to your camera because the FQDN doesn't point to your home IP address anymore. Once the dyndns credentials are in the camera (or router) there is no management needed. The device will automatically update dyndns.com with your new IP address as it changes, and you do not need to do anything.
For Item (3), are you saying port forward 1025 is it for the 2nd camera only or for both? Or is it 2nd camera use 1025 and first camera use 8080?
Here's an example of what I mean:
    Camera 1: 192.168.1.210 port 1024. In router, forward port 1024 to 192.168.1.210
    Local Access: http://192.168.1.210:1024
    Remote Access: http://bernards210.dyndns.org:1024 (Example)
    Camera 2: 192.168.1.211 port 1025. In router, forward port 1025 to 192.168.1.211
    Local Access: http://192.168.1.211:1025
    Remote Access: http://bernards210.dyndns.org:1025 (Example)
    Camera 3: 192.168.1.212 port 1026. In router, forward port 1026 to 192.168.1.212
    Local Access: http://192.168.1.212:1026
    Remote Access: http://bernards210.dyndns.org:1026 (Example)
to access the 2 camera outside, do i have to have another dyndns host name or can i use the current one for both camera?
As you can see in the above example, the dyndns name remains the same for remote access to all three cameras. The only change is the port number at the end. Your router will translate the port number to the IP address that the port is forwarded to, allowing you to select the camera that you wish to view by changing the port number in the address.
I was actually thinking that the camera web browser can show 2 camera at the same time. Is it possible?
No. Each browser window will display a single camera. You can however opens multiple instances of your browser to allow viewing of more than one camera simultaneously. A better solution is to install the Video Monitoring Software that is included with the camera which allows you to view multiple cameras in the same window.

  • I need a remote access application

I need a remote access application for my Mac OS X 10.5.8 so that when I'm at my home office I can access my remote business office network that uses PCs. Is there an application I can download to do this? Is Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection for Mac what I need? I am not a technical person at all so I need something simple.

You didn't specify what kind access? Control and observe or just simple file sharing/access.
How do you plan on getting into your office's network? do you have a VPN setup? If not, are the correct ports open and forwarded on the main router?
Lots of unknown variables here. Without knowing what's in place it'll be hard to steer you in the right direction once you figure out what type of access you need.
If Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection is definitely what you want to use, then please post further question on Microsoft's own forums for their Mac software, as Apple discussions only provide support for Apple products: http://www.officeformac.com/productforums

  • OSX Server or Remote Access

    Hi All,
Don't know if this is the right place, but I need some advice.
I have a new person starting in my office and I need to be able to access all the files that she is working on.
I was thinking of turning my iMac into a server and getting her to copy all the files across to my HD after working on them. I work from home a lot so I am also going to need to VPN in and access the files that way as well as through a network.
But I will still need to do some work on my iMac and I am not sure whether to buy the OSX server software or Remote Access??
Any ideas or advice would be most appreciated.
    Thanks
    Marie

Based on what you are describing, I think your iMac as is will do the job. Mac OS X server is generally for situations where you are going to serve more than 10 users at once.
So you can enable File Sharing and your new user could mount your shared volume, and she could even work on her files on the mounted volume.
For the moment I'll assume you have a VPN setup. I'm making this assumption be cause I don't know how to setup a VPN
So accessing your office iMac from home, you could enable System Preferences -> Sharing -> Remote Management (it might also be called Apple Remote Desktop). Then from home if using Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier, you could use Chicken of the VNC to connect to your office iMac. If Mac OS X 10.5, you can use the built-in screen sharing facilities.
Via CotVNC or Screen Sharing, you should be able to work on your office iMac as if you were there. It should also be possible to mount your shared volumes, but unless you have a fast network connection, that could be slow depending on how much stuff is in the folders you are accessing as well as the size of the files you may want to transfer.

  • How to set up my elderly parent with Mac so that I can use remote access to help her?

I want to set my elderly mother up with a new Mac mini so that I can use remote access to show her how use email, browse the internet, share photos.  (She lives in KY, I live in OR)
She has had an iPhone and an iPad for about 6 months and she can barely use them without becoming frustrated.   I want to be able to see her screen with her and show her how to do things.
My plan is to set her up with a Mac mini and I'll use my MacBookAir to remote into her system.  I'm buying the mini to configure and then I'll mail it to her.
My question is whether to try to use Back to My Mac or Teamviewer for remote access
I have broadband with comcast and she has broadband with Access Cable.  Each have their company modem/routers--neither of us have Airport Express.
I have my own iCloud account and she has her own.   If I use Back to My Mac, it seems that I would need to set up a separate account on my Mac that would sync to her iCloud account.
Teamviewer seems easier because I don't have to use a separate account.   Any advice?   Anything that I'm not thinking about?

As Linc says, you can establish a Screen Sharing session via iMessage and Facetime.  The advantage of these 2 approaches is that once your Mom gets used to using them, she will be more comfortable using them to communicate with you.  I've talked to my Mom via iChat (aka iMessage) more since she learned to use them, then in all the years before that (including when I was a child ).  And just being able to see your Mom via Facetime can be useful when you want to gage how she is doing.
However, if you are any distance from your Mom, they you want backup methods incase something goes wrong.
So beside iMessage/Facetime, the next best would be Back-to-My-Mac via iCloud, however, you will want to establish her Mac as using your account so that you have the right to take control remotely.
An alternative that does not mix up your iCloud acounts would be to use TeamViewer.com (which has an unattended mode so you can do off-hour maintenance when your Mom is not around; or check up on her to find out if she is dating - Turns out if I had been paying attention, I would not have been blind-sided by my Mom getting Married again last Summer - she is in her 80's! ).
LogMeIn.com, as dwb says, can be used the same was as TeamViewer.com
Both LogMeIn.com and TeamViewer.com are very good at making it easy to get through the home router and if you are having any problems connecting using other Methods, TeamViewer.com or LogMeIn.com will most likely not have any issues.
Back-to-My-Mac allows screen sharing and file sharing so you can transfer files as well as control the screen.
Screen Sharing via Messages allows cooperative file transfer. That is to say, you can try pushing a file to your Mom, but she has to accept each transfer.
TeamViewer.com has an unattended file transfer mode.
LogMeIn.com requires the paid version to transfer files.  However, there are other ways to transfer files, such as downloading them from the original source on your Mom's system while using screen sharing, using Dropbox (or similar), emailing them, etc...
Of course if you are really network savvy, you can roll your own via ssh tunnels, port forwarding routers, getting dynamic DNS names, transferring files via scp, or tunneling AFP file sharing, tunneling your screen sharing sessions.  Lots of fun and excitement playing with terminal commands

  • Remote access to Time Capsule won't work

Over the past couple of months I've been doing lots of research and planning into replacing my Mac Pro and old MacBook Pro with a new Mac setup.  I was looking for efficiency, productivity and ultimate portability so the Macbook Pro Retina and Time Capsule grabbed my attention.
I was interested in the MacBook Pro Retina for work (travel) and home leisure use.  Due to having so much music and video iTunes content, I was interested in purchasing a Time Capsule and a secondary external hard drive, placing all my iTunes content on the Time Capsule which I would then back up to the external hard drive when I was at home.  I would then setup Time Capsule to be accessible over the internet so that I could view my media content through iTunes wherever in the world I was (internet speeds permitting of course).  By doing this I could carry only my work files with me on the 512GB SSD Macbook Pro Retina, but could access the Time Capsule media files remotely, either via wi-fi or by tethering my iPhone 5.
So I purchased a Time Capsule to test my theory.  I followed online guidance on how to achieve such a setup and using my 2008 MacBook Pro (which runs Snow Leopard) and a friends internet connection I got the system to work.  I was able to remotely contact Time Capsule and watch High Def video content via wireless internet and even tethered to my iPhone.  So I went and purchased a Macbook Pro Retina (running Mountain Lion) and set about setting up the system in the same way.  But this is where something's gone wrong.  I can't connect to the Time Capsule over the internet at all.
The Air Port utility has been updated to version 6 which is lacking the ability to instruct the Time Capsule to "Allow access over WAN".  I thought I'd make sure it still connected via the internet using my old MacBook Pro, which had definitely worked perfectly just a couple weeks earlier, and that won't work either.  I can't find the option to "Allow access over WAN" within Airport Utility 5.6.1 either?  And the simple apple script application that I wrote (following an online guide) to open the remote connection to Time Capsule with the double left click on an icon has stopped working too.
I don't pretend to be a network engineer and I'm no I.T. expert, though I usually manage to teach myself what I need to know to sort issues like this out, but this has gotten me really stumped!  I tried downloading an old version of Airport Utility to see if that had the "Allow access over WAN" feature (within the 'Disks' > 'File Sharing' area of Airport Utility) but my Mac OS won't allow the old versions to run.
Perhaps the version of Airport Utility I used on my Macbook Pro a couple of weeks ago didn't have the "Allow access over WAN" check box either and I just didn't notice - which is likely unless Airport Utility updates itself in the background without any prompts etc.  I certainly didn't notice a software update for it any time over the past few days.  Either way, I don't understand how it could have been working a few days back and now it's suddenly not.
I used this guides to gain remote access to Time Capsule successfully just a couple of weeks ago:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIQ7SzA1cK4
Can anyone shed any light on the issue and point me toward a fix please?  I'd appreciate the help.

Thanks LaPastenague.  I'm not sure if I have a static IP but I can confirm it hasn't changed in the past month.
I've pretty much come to the conclusion that what I want to do isn't really possible using Time Capsule.  Like I mentioned, I had remote access working a couple of weeks ago but it seems like apple have updated the firmware or airport software to remove something that was necessary to remotely connect in the same way.  And even if I did get it working I think it would still be so restrictive, requiring a fast wifi or mobile phone tethered connection to view my media files over the internet.
I got connected via iCloud and B.T.M.M. but the connection was very slow and video wouldn't stream well at all (painful).  It seems that the speed constraints would make it very frustrating each time I simply wanted to look through my vast iTunes music collection or movie library.  Album covers won't appear either.
Even if it were possible to connect via a static IP I just don't think that the WAN connection would be stable or fast enough to offer an efficint solution(?), so I'll probably have to by an external portable HD and use Time Capsule for Time Machine and Printer Sharing.
I wish I could stream my iTunes movies and music successfully over the internet, but right now it just doesn't seem possible.
