Need advice on file locations / storage

Hi,
I was wondering if I should store all of the LR data including the DNG/RAW files outside of LR on an external RAID 1 eSATA CalDigit VR drive... it's wicked fast and since it's RAID 1 it's its own backup.
I was wondering which datafiles produced by lightroom take up the most space? I am pretty sure it will be the DNG/RAW files with imbeded adjustment data...
Any thoughts on using Mac's Time Machine to BU LightRoom data?

Here, in this new company I have a little more time to make some testing... and so made a few and... thats just a problem with "older" software. I've just downloded the indesign CS3 demo from Adobe website and made a test.
I've made a new freehand MX doc and a Indesign CS3 doc and place on both an image that it is stored in a PC with Windows XP (cifs:// share) and an image on other Mac running OS X. Saved the files and close the apps. Unmount both shared volumes and then mount again.
When opening the freehand MX doc it did find the image stored on the other Mac but not the one stored on the PC.
When opening the Indesign doc everything was fine. It opened both linked images without loosing the "path" to the files.
I remember that I've done this test (freehand only) in the previous company I was wich had an Windows 2003 server with a smb/cifs share. I ask the IT guy to make a afp share for the macs using the "services for macintosh" but he couldnt get there so I was stucked with that "solution".
There we used mostly freehand... it was a everyday nightmare. We had a folder with the logos from all the companies in the groupe in one folder in tiif, jpeg and eps format to link to projects and dont have repeated files all over the place, so every time we opened a freehand file that had a link to those logos I sometimes have to find the path for every single files linked to that one...
I'm trying to convince everyone here to go CS3 exclusively and put freehand away. It aint gonna be developed any further so... but until than we have lots of projects already done with it and will continue for some time more

PHP disaster with entropy installation need help with file location

I have a mac mini snow leopard server running 10.6.5 ,and I was trying to resolve a mcrypt module issue so that I could install wordpress and magento on some of our sites.After doing what I thought was extensive research, I decided to download the entropy php 5.30-3pkg from Marc Liyanage since it was already compiled and had an automatic install.I had the xcode tools installed and was going to attempt to compile it myself,but did not quite understand the instructions on Michael Gracie's site.When I installed the entropy package it told me that i needed to first disable the existing module,and I attempted to uncheck the php5 module,with no luck,as every time I tried to save it it rechecked itself,which I later discovered was happening because of dependency issues, as I had the mail,wiki,etc services on the sites checked. So my problem is that I wasn't aware at the time of the dependency issue,and I just renamed the module and the file name by putting a # in front of both (Inside the server admin dialog box through the pop up window).I didn't think it would hurt since is was going to be disabled,but now i get blank pages when trying to connect,and can't even see a test.php file, nor can I even locate where they say:
software is supposed to be installed into a new directory /usr/local/php5 on my boot volume. If you ever want to get rid of the package, you only have to remove this directory and a symbolic link called +entropy-php.conf in either /etc/apache2/sites or /etc/apache2/other, depending on whether you run OS X Client or Server.
Any help would be appreciated !

Thank you so much, that works just like i wanted it to as it downloads the file but then i have the problem of the file being called firename.png (or whatever i put in there instead)
using this i changed the code and made it this instead which works 100%
set download to text returned of (display dialog "Enter IGN" default answer "" buttons {"Download", "Cancel"} default button 1)
set the destination to (choose folder)
do shell script "curl -L http://minecraft.net/skin/" & download & ".png" & " -o " & quoted form of ((POSIX path of the destination) & download & ".png")
so i used the input name again with download and added a .png for the extention and now it downloads the file to the locaiton i specify with the name of the user im entering with the correct exention, 100% awesome ^^

Newbie needs advice using files from Canon 5D Mk2

I'm getting a bit confused when it comes to codecs and frame rates etc and am hoping somebody can steer me in the right direction.
I'm based in the UK and have my camera set up to shoot at 24 frames per sec. I've read that before bringing the .MOV file into FCE it's best to convert it first using MPEG Streamclip.
Ok so I have my .MOV file loaded up but my first problem is I'm unsure what output settings I should now be considering. I assume it should be the Apple Intermediate Codec but then do I need to enter '24' into the frame rate box to match what I have set in the camera? I'm also unsure which frame size I should be choosing... eg; 1920x1080 (16:9), 1920x1080 (HDTV 1080i) etc.
And then once I have my exported file I'm unclear what the sequence settings should be in FCE.
Looking through the 'Load Sequence Preset' should I be choosing Apple Intermediate Code 1920x1080i50 or i60 or something else altogether?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Need advice about files back up

Could you please tell me how I can easily (I am not technically competent) backup the following:
- Microsoft security updates
- Norton security updates
- other downloaded software program updates
- emails
- Internet "Favourites" list
- desktop display settings
- any other important files you suggest

It sounds like you need a disk cloning program similar to the software used by Toshiba for their product recovery discs.
There are several commercial products like Norton Ghost for example but there are also free ones like Terabyte Unlimited CopyWipe:

Moving from PC to MAC - need advice on mass music storage

Hi all,
I am moving my PC music from an external drive to my iMAC.
I Work as a full time DJ also and have 2 x 1TB external hard drives with nearly 2,500 albums. Now some of these albums are specialist DJ albums which I have tagged myself (with album name - ie, DJ 80s collection 1 - and the name of the songs)
These work well for me.
Now my question is this:
When i transfered 1 of the specialist DJ albums over, into iTunes on my iMac it started to break them into separate albums which I don't want.
ok - so what I want to do is this. Keep all my DJ music either on a separate external hard drive and keep them 100% away from iTunes and only drag my proper albums ie, ColdPlay CD etc over where they stay in there proper album form.
I want iTunes on my iMac to stay clean looking with all songs in there proper albums with artwork etc and all my DJ music separate and NOT in iTunes.
If anyone can help the best way of doing this - Brilliant!
ps, is there a separate music player that I can use for my DJ music?
Also is Nero available for Mac - or any FREE software you can recommend?

iTunes does allow you to create multiple music libraries -- just hold down the Option key when starting the program. This way you could create one normal, clean library, and have another with your DJ-related songs.
For those DJ-related songs, you might consider replicating the CDs in the form of playlists -- like your DJ 80s Collection.
And for DJ software, you should take a look at DJay (which also runs on the iPhone and the iPad). While not free, it works remarkably well. A demo version is available.

Need advice on retrieving Bitlocker Key or External Key File Location

My Windows 8.1 PC includes a system drive and data drives. All the drivers were encrypted using Bitlocker with the data drives set for autounlock.
I recently decrypted the system drive (without decrypting the data drives, <very bad>) and reinstalled the OS, after which my data drives required the Bitlocker recovery key to unlock.
However, I had "backed up" the recovery keys to my Microsoft account but now I cannot find them.
I have tried to use the "manage-bde" command at the console to obtain the Recovery Keys but I am only getting the Numerical Password ID and the External Key File Name. Can anyone provide advice on how I can retrieve the recovery passwords
or the External Key File location?
Before I had set the data drives to autounlock I had used a recovery password to unlock the drives. However, now when I try to unlock the data drives only the recovery key (which I don't have) is being requested not the password.

How did you back up the BitLocker recovery key? To local computer, flash driver or Microsoft account?

I cannot import from my camera. It tells me I need to set up a storage location under preferences but I do not see that option in preferences.

I just started and I trying to import videos from my camera but it says I need to set up a storage location under preferences. When I go to FCPX preferences there is no storage option. What do I do?

Did you actually move iMovie Project to desktop? While you are in Final Cut Pro X, and if you try to import iMovie Project, it kinda of knows where to find original files made by iMovie.
Only a big if you leave the original iMovie Project and iMovie Events as it is inside Movie Folder on your computer. IF that is the case, then Final Cut Pro X knows where to find iMovie files when you wish to import iMovie Project.
I am not sure why you move around and move files all over the place. I am afraid that you are asking for more trouble or problems unless if you understand what to expect and what's not.

Read this concise guide.
The files you imported into an Aperture Library can be exported (at any time, and repeatedly) using the command "File ▹ Export ▹ Originals". Your Originals are never altered. What went in is what comes out.
Adjustments and changes to the metadata that you made since creating an Image in Aperture by importing a file are saved to a text file. This file is combined, on-the-fly, with the Original to create the Image that you see in Aperture. There is no file saved to disk that is the full-size Image. Thumbnails are saved, and Previews are saved. These are JPG files, almost always smaller than the Original. They are not substitutes for the Image for the use you have.
When you need a file of an Image to use in another program, you export the Image from Aperture. "Export" means "Make me a file of this Image according to these file specs I'm providing". The way to get files of your adjusted Images is simple: create them by exporting. Specify "Original size", and use a loss-less image-file format (e.g. TIFF 16-bit) if you want to retain as much visual information as possible.
Search the Web for information about transitioning from Aperture to Lightroom. Note that I say "transitioning". You cannot move a database from one format to another without significant changes, and likely some loss of information. Adobe provides a tool and some instructions. I strongly recommend working out the process step-by-step, and then proceeding with first a few Images, then a bushel-ful, and stopping to use the first few, the the bushel-ful, before committing your entire collection to the process.
As always, never use any computer file without having a back-up.
We have seen mixed reports here of the success of the LR tool that creates a LR database from your Aperture database.
If you want to carefully define the process, and test and refine it, use the excellent process-development, analysis, and execution program inShort.
Sadly, there is not and can never be a good, thorough re-positioning of the digital assets in your Aperture Library to become digital assets in a LR database. Just as a metaphor for any user contemplating transitioning to another digital asset manager: that would be like digging up a house in one country, planting it in a hole in another country, and expecting to be able to use the toilet and the sinks, turn on the lights, cook dinner, and sleep soundly.

The 2 year old fix for changing temp files is no longer valid, I need to change the temp file location in the latest firefox.

In 3.6.3 I'm unable to find the parent cache to change where the temp files are located. I have an SSD drive, and I need to get the temp file off, and onto my platter drive. I have read the previous fix of about:config and changing the parent cache location, but it no longer seems to be there. I'm unable to locate anything relating to my SSD drive location in about:config.

Unfortunately, it appears that what I wrote about not being able to find the location IN about:config of the cache to change it from my C: drive to a different location, was mildly misunderstood that I didn't know how to get into about:config.
The location of browser.cache.disk.parent_directory does not currently exist in 3.6.3. I'm assuming it's under a different location. Also using the simple string of "cache" lists several options, but none of them appear to be where firefox is currently dumping the temp files onto my C:

Does a wrapper html file need to be in the same directory? Need advice

I'm doing some RnD experiments for an upcoming project and I would like to use Edge.
What I'm trying to do is load 2 different compsites in a wrapper.html file that is level above the compsites. For instance my setup is

project/product2/product2.html
In my wrapper file I have this, but this doesn't work

But when I move the wrapper.html file into the same directory as product1 and modify .js path and it loads fine? So my question is how do people normally load multiple compsites that resided in a different directory? What is the best method for accomplishing this? You will need to update the new loction for even the product1_edge.js file and the product1_edgeActions.js file in the product1_edgePreload.js file.
Open up the product1.edgePreload.js file.
Search for 'aloader'.
Under this there should be a ' load: "product1_edge.js" ' change it to ' load: "product1/product1_edge.js" '
and do the same for product1_edgeActions.js file too.
Bascially when you update the location of the edge preload file you will have to update the location of the animate assets like the edge file,edge actions,images etc.All these file locations work relative to the html file loading them.

To change to manually managing an iPod you don't "unselect" sync music, you "select" manually manage songs and videos. If you want to delete songs from iTunes and keep them on the iPod you need to change the update option of your iPod by checking the box beside "manually manage songs and videos" in the Summary tab and clicking Apply. Your iPod will not sync with iTunes in this mode so it can have different content, you can get details here:

One major word of caution. If you delete songs or videos from your computer and have no back up other than the iPod you will risk losing them permanently if your iPod fails or you find you have to restore it to solve a problem. You should consider investing in an additional internal or external hard drive to store/back up your music. Alternatively at the very least back up anything you can't replace such as iTunes downloads to CD or DVD: How to back up your media in iTunes
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on your desktop or check this link: Safely Disconnect IPod
I don't have any TV shows so I can't speak from experience here but looking at the TV tab it appears you can only sync shows, there's no manually manage option. Syncing would require that you keep the shows on your computer otherwise they would be removed from the iPod the next time you syncronised with iTunes.

Can someone help me to find the Log file locations of pmrepserver & pmrepagent? (ie. pmrepserver.log & pmrepagent.log)
I have made a search on my informatica folder, but it didn't result anything.
Or do we need to configure anything in the informatica side to get these log files?

The Repository Server no longer "exists" in Informatica 8.1.1 SP4
You will need to go to the Informatica PowerCenter Administration Console to see the "Repository Service" logs.
There is a log tab on the main page or you can select the Repository Service by name and go to the Log sub-tab.

Multiple music files locations- need to be consolidated!

I currently have music in 5 different locations on my internal hard drive (don't ask). I just purchased an external hard drive, and would like to consolidate all the music to that drive in one location. How do I do this without having to "repoint" itunes to the new file location for every single individual song? I can't do that 4,000 times- I will lose my marbles...

Just did this myself. Change the location where you have told iTunes to import files to. Then use consolidate option. It will take a long time depending on total size of files to COPY. Once change is made and verified you can, at your option, delete the original files. After doing this you must always have external drive attached and ready before opening iTunes.
