Need advice on improving wireless service in my home

We have a 3 story house and the router is on the second floor.  There are parts of the first floor that cannot get wireless. The only service on the first floor is a set top box for the TV.
I figure my options are:
--Get an additional router for the first floor
--Move the existing router to the first floor (which would probably cut off service to the thrid floor
--Replace the existing router with something more powerful that will reach all areas of the house
What do you recommend?  If #1 or #3, should I go through Verizon, or buy a third party product and install myself?  Will I need other products (splitter, etc) if I install it myself?

You can get a dual band wireless extender and put it on the first floor. https://teleproducts.verizon.com/fios/index.cfm/eh/DisplayDetails It will solve all your issues and it is very easy to install. I have one and it works great.

    Kneehightoughguy,
You do not need to purchase service from a carrier unless you want to utilize the iPads connection to a 3G Network on it's own (directly).  You may choose to add a Tethering plan onto your existing cell phone plan and to have an iPad connect to the Wifi connection that the Tethered phone would offer.
Always compare your usage and your costs, as your mileage may vary.

  • Advice on improving wireless home network

    Hello,
I've got a wireless home network set up, but it isn't performing as well as I would like. I have 2 computers I want using the network, 1 powerbook G4 and 1 sony vaio. I purchased a time machine with built in airport extreme (5Gz N) as my base station. I've also purchased 2 airport extremes to extend my network and add a printer to the network. Now, I want to try to improve my performance.
I have a 3 story house. The time capsule is hooked up to the cable modem in the garage, on the east end of the house. I put 1 AE in the 3rd story office on the east end of the house and hooked up my printer. I put the other AE in my 3rd story bedroom on the west end of the house. Although both AE's do extend the signal a bit, it's not by much.
Before wifi became popular, the previous owner of the house (my father in law) installed an ethernet network throughout the house. The hub is in the garage, which is why the cable modem is hooked up down there.
Now, what would be the best and quickest way to improve my wifi coverage and bandwidth throughout the house, especially in that bedroom on the west end. Should I moved the time capsule out of the basement? Does being down there weaken the coverage? Can I connect my time capsule to my cable modem through the ethernet network?
Or am I just expecting too much from these devices?
Also, I assume I'm only using the 2.4 Ghz spectrum, since my computer's airport card is a little too old to take advantage of the 5 Ghz spectrum, or am I miss understanding something?
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Yes, for the best overall bandwidth performance, you will want to take advantage of the Ethernet backbone. What you will want to do, in this case, it to create a "roaming" network with each of the base stations connected to this backbone.
Where you place the base stations will depend on where there will be Ethernet jacks available.
If possible, I would suggest the following:
o Leave the Time Capsule (TC) connected to the modem and run an Ethernet patch cable from one of its available LAN ports to the Ethernet jack.
o If you will be doing most of your computing on the third floor, place the AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBSn)at both ends and (of course) where there are Ethernet jacks available. Connect an Ethernet patch cord between the jack and the WAN port of the AEBSn.
Both AEBSns will need to be reconfigured as bridges as you will want the TC to be the main router providing both NAT & DHCP services for the entire network. Use the same Network Name for each base station, but be sure to use a different radio channel to prevent interference.
Also, I assume I'm only using the 2.4 Ghz spectrum, since my computer's airport card is a little too old to take advantage of the 5 Ghz spectrum, or am I miss understanding something?
If you can provide me with the exact Machine ID for your Mac, I can let you know if its supports 802.11a ... which operates on the 5 GHz band. You can find this through the System Profiler. It would be something like PowerBook2,1.
You will have a number of options here, depending on the exact models of your base stations. Are any or all of them the simultaneous dual-band versions?

  • Need Advice on improving script processing and ensuring completion

    Hi,
I have a program in which I am running a number of for loops which are doing a number of different things.  I pull in data from an xml file and then step through that data to dynamically create arrays, populate the arrays, and create and modify movie clips.
The program I'm building is similar in scope to one I developed in Director many years ago, and in that environment we had to actually put breaks in using timers to ensure that the data would be processed and that the system wouldn't choke.
What I'm seeing with this flash version of the application is similar and I suspect the same.  Basically, when navigating from the frame where the scripts are processed to the frame where the movie clips are displayed, there are times when it works perfectly and times when things are out of whack.  I put in a 5 second delay (arbitrarily) to see if this would resolve the issue and on my system at least it does.  But I need some advice on coming up with a real solution.
Any inofrmation you can give me about processing particularly as it relates to for loops and dynamic creation of elements (whether arrays or MCs) as well as making sure that everything is done woudl be greatly appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Chris McLaughlin

       - SQL profile "SYS_SQLPROF_014f902e2ea4c002" used for this statement

    some comments:
it would be more simple to read the plan with indentatitions: you could use a fixed-width font
it's hard to tell much about the plan without seeing the corresponding query (though in this case the predicate section gives some information on the query - especially step 1)
the plan shows the use of a sql profile: so the CBO uses additional statistics to generate the plan
in step 3 there is an index skip scan: that's only a good idea if there are few distinct values for the leading column of the index and the selectivity of "TICKET_REFERENCE_1" IS NULL is good
in step 6 there is a Full Table Scan for the driving table of a nested loops join: the cost value for the scan is very small and so is the cost for the complete NL join - and that could be misleading
I would use the gather_plan_statistics hint to get a plan with rowsource statistics to check if the cardinalities the CBO works with are correct. If they are not you could try to disable the profile (or create a new profile; of course after checking who created the profile and for what reasons). With an accurate sql profile the CBO should have enough information to create an accurate plan in most cases.

  • Need advice on sudden wireless loss with Buffalo AirStation WHR-G54S

Our two MacBooks suddenly can't pick up a signal from our Buffalo wireless router, though the router's Ethernet WAN port works fine. When I unplug the power for 3 seconds for a diagnostic, I get a red light that the manual says indicates a RAM problem.
Where should I go from here? Power down the router for a minute or so, then reboot it? Reconfigure my network over again? Buffalo's support site offers little guidance.

So I slept on it and in the morning the router was working normally, network available to both MacBooks as if nothing had happened. Go figure.

  • We need advice on what cloud service is the best option for us

    Hello,
I work for a very small company, we have two designer. Both of the designers just go new computers and we are looking at switching to the cloud but are confused about what the best plan is for us. We mainly need the creative suites softwares but we occasionally both work with a few production suite programs as well. Again, it is only the two computers and we do not see a need to add anther computer within the new few years. What is the best option for us?

  • Need advice for wireless iTunes access (have router already)

I'm having a hard time sifting through all the info to find the best solution. I have a MacBook Pro that I'll soon be upgrading to Lion from Snow Leopard, as well as an iPhone, with a second iPhone soon to enter the family. We also plan to get an iPad. We actually have an older iMac that we won't be upgrading, so we're going to move our iTunes library from the iMac over to the MacBook (basically turning the MacBook into our primary computer). We want to be able to play iTunes without having to keep the MacBook plugged into wired speakers. That seems a bit pointless.
We have a wireless router already (a D-Link), so I don't need AirPort Express to act as a router. (We have a 1 bedroom condo, really no reason to extend the network or anything like that.) We have a printer that works wirelessly with the MacBook already. All I'm really trying to figure out is the best way to set it up so that we can have iTunes on the MacBook, playing over speakers (either the ones we currently have our iMac plugged into, or our stereo speakers that we have our TV setup with). Ideally if we could do the same from the iPhone and (future) iPad, that would be great, too.
Does it make any sense for us to get an AirPort Express to do this, or would it just be more straightforward to get wireless speakers that can work over Bluetooth (like the Creative D200 ones in the Apple store)? I feel like the AirPort has the potential to be overkill for our usage, especially since I can't seem to figure out if you can use AirTunes with an iPad, and we don't need it for the wireless printing functions.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Thanks Leo! Yeah, I was confused about the 2500 series too because they push the Flex 7500 so much as the "real" solution.
Now that I'm looking in the right spot, it looks like NCS Prime Infrastructure is for the serious folks and we could probably get away without it, right? So that would leave the access points, the controller, and the basic network stuff.

  • JMS to Synchronous Web Service Scenario (Need Advice to use BPM or Not)

    Hi Experts,
We have a scenario where we fetch data from JMS Sender and Send it to MDM Webservices.
We want to have the files processed in such a way that until we get a response from webservice back that it was sucessful ,then only we need to process the next file.
We would need advice as can we use BPM for this.
We are thinking of having BPM like this:
    RecieveStep(Asyn)-SynchronousSend Step(with wait)-Stop
The problem with this is when processing huge files the processing time of the Queue is taking very long and sometimes we are getting SYSFAIL.
Please would anyone advice as how can we approach this scenario either using BPM or without.
Also Can we use multiple queues or multpile instances concept for this scenario.
    Please Advice.
    Thanks in Advance
    Regards
    J

    Hi Prateek,
Thank you very much for your quick reply.
The response from Webservice does not need to be sent anywhere.
We just want that after recieving the response back from webservice(SOAP) then only we need to process the next file.
Can we control something from Sender JMS adapter side as well as it is picking up all the files and all files wait at BPE until each one gets processed.
Is this possible without BPM or with BPM.
Please advice as what wud be possible steps inorder to achive it through BPM or Without BPM.
    Thanks and Regards,
    J

  • Recommendation for home wireless service in So Cal?

I need to purchase wireless internet service for new home in Southern California.  I currently use ATT DSL.  After briefly switching to ATT Uverse on advice of ATT customer service when I wanted to upgrade to faster service and old airport apparently stopped working correctly, it was a disaster. (There is a separate conversation on the Apple Forum about the experience.) After much hassle I switched back to ATT DSL and bought a new airport.  Things have worked fine since, although my son still thinks it takes too long to download movies. We are a Big Mac household - iPad, iPad Mini, iPhone 5, two MacBook Airs, iTouch - and an oddball Droid phone. New home currently uses Verizon phone and internet service through Time Warner (I'm choosing to go with Direct TV).
So my questions - Does Verizon wireless internet service work well with a household full of Macs? I prefer to use an Airport. Is there a modem and/or router that Verizon uses that is good or bad? Fios or DSL? (I had a horrible experience with the modem/router with the Uverse disaster.) Has the modem/router/Mac connection improved with Uverse? Or should I just stick with what I know works for me - ATT DSL even though its not the fastest speed?
I'm not technologically sophisticated (this is probably obvious), so would appreciate replies in plain English.  Thanks!

    DSL is yesterday's technology:
BEST is Verizon FIOS (or ATT Uverse) depending if either has fiberoptic cable to your door (call each to find out; they will know from your address).  Be careful, ATT is now calling their non-fiberoptic service Uverse; so ask about fiberoptic!
I use Time-Warner Internet at its fastest consumer speed.  I am currently uploading a 16GB file to an associate in UK and it will take 18 hours (remember upload is always much slower than download).  I think my service is 20 or 30 down and 1 up; at about $40/month.  I have multiple routers to connect it to many Macs, iPhones, AppleTVs, home entertainment systems, etc.
Stay away from satellite; it is ONLY for internet service to the boonies...
FYI: I use DirecTV (and a roof-top antenna) for TV and T-Mobile for both VoIP at home and iPhone 5. Everyone HATES the Time-Warner cable service due to their monopoly in So. Cal.
T-Mobile has best monthly rates in So. Cal for iPhone 5 AND you can purchase additional data for tethering (using your iPhone as a WiFi HotSpot or with BlueTooth, as I use it at an off-line office that has no internet service).  AND you can talk and internet at the SAME TIME, unlike Verizon which on the iPhone is one or the other.
Soon T-Mobile will implement their UMA/WiFi Calling feature for the iPhone; already implemented on Blackberry, Android and other phones.  This allows FULL T-Mobile talk and text coverage ANYWHERE in the world where you have access to WiFi.  I use it with my Blackberry on every trip to London or at my girlfriend's house in the hills above Santa Cruz by swapping the SIMM card, now with micro-SIMM adapter.

  • Need Advice on Netgear Router

I have a old snow base station that is connected by ethernet cable to my new wireless internet service. The cable goes to an antenna device that receives and transmits the internet signal. The isp wanted me to configure the base station to connect using PPPOE. That initially worked but the connection drops frequently during the day with a lot of effort expended in reacquiring it. They've had me switch the configuration by manually enter the ip address and dns numbers. This worked for a while but is now dropping again.
The isp has recommended using a netgear router which they claim many of their customers are using without issue. I need advice as to which model would be appropriate for a 3 story townhouse. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The old basestaions are notorious for being completely unreliable. I bought the entry level Netgear Router for about $25 and it has been flawless; providing 3 of my roommates with wirless access for over a year.

  • Need advice on on a Mac Pro 1,1 Media Center

I currently have a 2009 Mac Mini running as my home media center, but I recently came by a FREE Mac Pro 1,1 and have decided to repurpose it as my media center so I can migrate my Mac Mini to my bedroom TV where it will live an easy life doing nothing but run Plex Home Theater, Netflix, and EyeTV. This machine falling into my lap was also quite timely because my 4-bay Drobo is running low on available expansion and another Drobo isn't in the budget at the moment.
This vintage mac pro is running Lion 10.7.5, has 1 old and crusty 500GB hardrive, dual x5160 processors, 4GB RAM (one stick i'm pretty sure is toast judging by the red light and the kernel panics), and the standard NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB graphics card. It will be used primarily for the following: network storage for iphoto and itunes libraries, streaming video, Plex Media Server & Plex Home Theater, and Handbrake encoding. I also have a goal of safety of data for my movies, photos and music as this machine will supplement my current Drobo storage.
My plans are for a 128GB SSD boot drive installed in one of the PCIe slots and then to load up all 4 of the 3.5" drive bays with WD Green hard drives. I have also ordered 4GB of replacement RAM, so upon removal of the faulty unit I will have 7GB.
Here is where I need advice because I am not very familiar with RAID and the differences between hardware or software raid. Am I better off getting four drives of the same size and setting them up as RAID 5 (I think) using Apple's RAID utility or should I throw in three 1TB drives and then install a fourth 3TB or 4TB drive as a Time Machine backup for the other three?
Should I upgrade the OSX to the technically unsupported latest version? Or is it not worth the trouble for this application?
Also, is there any benefit to upgrading the graphics card to the ATI Radeon 5770? Would this yield an improved image quality? I am outputting to a Denon AV Reciever and subsequently to a 100" projection screen, if that makes a difference. I also noticed the 5770 has an HDMI port, wich would be nice, but not necessary since I can use a DVI converter and woud still need to use the optical audio out anyway.
    Much obliged for any input

PCIe cards that use or support SSD are not bootable until you get to 2008 (and that is limited too).
Green are not suited for any form of array unless say NAS and WD RED.  Better option would be 3 x 2TB WD Blacks in a mirror, and too many people only use two drives, well 3 is much easier safer and works better. Might want to invest in www.SoftRAID.com product even.
Best price and quality, got my 1,1 with 8 x 2GB (ideal is 4 or 8 DIMMs)
    2x2GB FBDIMM DDR2 667MHz @ $25
    http://www.amazon.com/BUFFERED-PC2-5300-FB-DIMM-APPLE-Memory/dp/B002ORUUAC/
With price of 250GB SSD $155 I'd go with that or stick with $89 for 128GB .
