Need Advice On Internet Net Only Plan

Because of a change in my life circumstance, I need internet access only in my home.  ( Have cell phone and no tv services required) My Verizon contract recently expired and now my bill has gone up by $35.00 per month.  I have been a long-term Verizon customer and have called for assistance but basically am told there is nothing they can do about it.
I am a senior citizen and would like to know other suggestions.  Please help.

Look into what JOSE mentioned above since FiOS is hands down better if you can get it, but it's very unlikely that you're going to be able to get standalone DSL from Verizon. Verizon quit offering Standalone DSL a long time ago, and the only way to get DSL without a landline from them now is to order DSL through a reseller. DSLExtreme, MegaPath, Cavalier, and some other resellers are notable.
Also, if you use any significant amount of data for Internet, avoid using mobile phone Internet. That's going to cost you if you start blowing up your data limit. Good move sticking with the flip phone on that note, for that exact reason.
Some other options you have too, is to downgrade a landline to lifeline service only, which should bring the bill down quite a bit, but satisfy Verizon's requirement for a landline. Otherwise, you may want to also take a look at your local Cable company. Many advertise only their bundled packages, but most will be happy to sell you just an Internet package, although it tends to cost a little more than DSL.

  • Need advice on current net setup

    Hi all:
I am currently a Verizon DSL customer who has the companies wireless DSL Router with WEP enabled. I am looking into the Time Capsule for both backup and to have the rest of the people in my home access to the Internet.
    My question is this:
Can I plug in the DSL wire directly into the Time Capsule without needing the Verizon DSL modem? If not, then can someone give me hints on how to set this up?
    Thanks,
    Dan Uff

Can I plug in the DSL wire directly into the Time Capsule without needing the Verizon DSL modem? If not, then can someone give me hints on how to set this up?
Sorry, but no. The Time Capsule (TC) does not have a built-in Internet modem so you will still need to use the DSL router provided by Verizon.
Since you were planning on using the TC to replace the DSL router, I suggest you try the following configuration:
o Leave the DSL router connected as is, but disable its wireless radio.
o Connect the TC directly to the DSL router's LAN port. Connect the Ethernet cable between this port and the WAN (circle of dots) port on the TC.
o Reconfigure the TC as a bridge. AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
In this configuration, the DSL router will continue to provide both NAT & DHCP services for the entire network, and the, the TC will perform as both a Wireless Access Point and Ethernet switch.

  • Need advice/assistance with kernel upgrade planning

As information/background, I have been away from SAP and basis for about four years.
Due to personnel changes here, I am now returning to it.  While I was away,
our SAP system was upgraded from version 4.0B to “SAP R/3 ENTERPRISE 47X110”.
I was not a part of the upgrade and have no details as to how it was accomplished.
At this point, we have two SAP “systems”: DEV and PRD and they are on separate
    partitions of an i5 520.
Both are running on OS/i5 V5R3M5 with mostly updated CUMe packages, etc, and
    PASE is installed.
Both of these “systems” use the 6.20 kernel at patch level 1598.
We know that this is an OLD kernel and we need to upgrade.
Upgrading the kernel used to be a really simple thing to do but now, it seems
so complicated!  The sheer volume of data on the SMP is very daunting—when
it can be found.  As a result, I have many questions:
    1.     Should we upgrade to kernel 6.40 or kernel 7.00?
    2.     The most recent support package that we have is SAPKB62028.
What is the purpose of “support packages”?  Do they have anything to do with the
kernel version?  The reason I ask is that in some places, it is stated that
    you
MUST be current with support packages before you attempt to upgrade your kernel to 6.40.  In other places, it isn’t even mentioned.
    Note 664679 states:
Before you can use the 6.40 kernel,
the following Support Package must be installed in your SAP system:
       SAP_BASIS 620: SAPKB62041
To avoid the problems described in note 787328,
the following Support Packages are also recommended:
       SAP_BASIS 620: SAPKB62047
So, obviously, I need to get these support packages up to level 47.  Why?
Isn’t the new kernel a fresh start?  Why would the existing kernel and
its support package level make any difference to the new kernel?
Since we are currently using kernel 6.20, do I need to install support
    packages ?
    5.     I know that we don’t have a J2EE server.  Do I need to even worry
    about that at all?
    6.     Is there any “basis” functionality that exists in the J2EE server
that doesn’t exist anywhere else?  In other words, are we doing ourselves
(and, particularly, me) a disservice by not having it?
    7.     What is the difference between SAP NetWeaver 04 and SAP NetWeaver 2004s?
    8.     As long as I have a backup, would it be safe to create a new kernel
for DEV but leave PRD alone?  Will the transport functions still operate if I do?
    9.     Someone mentioned an “R3OPT Support Package Stack”.  Would this be
preferable to loading from the installation CD and patching?
Is this in addition to the new kernel installation?
Any information is greatly appreciated because, as you can see,
I have a lot to learn in a very short time.

    Hi Robert,
I now try to answer a bit ...
    1) So, I must use 6.40 kernel. What determines "basis 6.20"? YES - 6.20 kernel is no longer supported - even for not for 4.7 or other systems on basis 6.20
    2) Okay, you agree with SAP that I need this package but...
    a) I don't know where to get it - on the SMP in the Support Package Patch area ... look via the following web-page and then 4.7: http://www.4soi.de/SupportPackages.php
(I did it without this patch already, but I can only support Thomas, that is pretty tricky then ...)
    b) I don't know how to install it - SPAM as usual ...
    c) WHY do I need it if the new kernel totally replaces the
old one? (See also question number 9).
BECAUSE, the new kernel runs in PASE and needs other locales etc.
    3) If I have TMKSVRxx libraries on my systems, can I safely delete them? YES, no problem
    4) If I have PCHxxx libraries on my systems, can I safely delete them? YES, no problem (reapear after each APYR3FIX and can always be deleted again)
5/6) How am I supposed to know what my needs are if I have no idea what
the product is supposed to deliver? Try finding any useful
information about it in SMP. I can't.
    so
YOU do NOT have J2EE - otherwise you would know that - it was very complicated to setup in the past. => be happy as long as you do not need it.
    7) Do you have to have the J2EE server before you can even consider your
systems to be running "NetWeaver"? I just don't understand what
"NetWeaver" is. Try finding any useful information about it in SMP. I can't.
Sorry, but this is too much via this forum :-((
NetWeaver on 6.20 technology doesn't really make sense. Therefore, please wait until you upgraded to ECC 6.0 or install another 7.0 product next to it ... (but not everybody needs that - so be happy as long you do not need to install that)
    8) Do I understand you correctly that I must upgrade the kernel for ALL
systems simultaneously? There's no allowing for testing for a few weeks?
NO, you SHOULD do this with testing !!!!
    9) Would this be preferable to loading from the installation CD and patching?
Is this in addition to the new kernel installation?
If I use R3OPT, do I still have to load the support packages mentioned in 2)?
You can use the ways above as you described either installation and patching or R3opt or you could download a complete kernel from my website, where you just insert the CD into your drive and use LODRUN *OPT ... (whatever you prefer)

I just bought an unlocked Iphone 4s and I wanna know if I need to take an Iphone plan or a 30$ plan could be enough and also if I only use it on wi-fi do I need to have datas in my plan?

The iPhone is designed to always have an internet connection as long as there is an available wi-fi network you have access to, or cellular reception. MMS requires a data connection with your cell phone carrier, which can't be exchanged over wi-fi. If your carrier supports visual voicemail with the iPhone, visual voicemail messages are downloaded to the iPhone via the carrier's cellular data or internet network only, not via wi-fi. If you ever need to make use of the Find My iPhone feature, it will be worthless without a data connection with your carrier's cellular network.
If you don't plan on having a data plan or you can't afford it, your money was wasted purchasing an iPhone. This likely makes no difference since most carriers require a data plan with the iPhone.

just get an ext HD, and point your itunes library to that drive so now you'll just keep all your media on this ext

iMessage requires data. You need to have an active internet connnection, either wi-fi or cellular. If you are not connected via wi-fi, then you would need a cellular data connection. If you do not have that, then you will not receive the iMessages. Either get the cellular data back, or remain connected to wi-fi, or you will have to disable iMessage and ensure that you have an SMS texting plan with your carrier.

How can I open Internet explorer 'only' pages on a mac, without creating a drive partition and installing windows separately?
I've tried winbottler, but it doesn't seem to serve my purpose. The web site that I'm trying to access only permits Internet explorer.

Microsoft has not written IE for Mac for years so unless you want to create a parition and install Windows, or user a Windows emulator, you're out of luck for installing IE on a Mac.
The web site that I'm trying to access
There might be a work around for you since it's just the one site.
Go to the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Advanced tab.

  • Need advice on on a Mac Pro 1,1 Media Center

I currently have a 2009 Mac Mini running as my home media center, but I recently came by a FREE Mac Pro 1,1 and have decided to repurpose it as my media center so I can migrate my Mac Mini to my bedroom TV where it will live an easy life doing nothing but run Plex Home Theater, Netflix, and EyeTV. This machine falling into my lap was also quite timely because my 4-bay Drobo is running low on available expansion and another Drobo isn't in the budget at the moment.
This vintage mac pro is running Lion 10.7.5, has 1 old and crusty 500GB hardrive, dual x5160 processors, 4GB RAM (one stick i'm pretty sure is toast judging by the red light and the kernel panics), and the standard NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 256MB graphics card. It will be used primarily for the following: network storage for iphoto and itunes libraries, streaming video, Plex Media Server & Plex Home Theater, and Handbrake encoding. I also have a goal of safety of data for my movies, photos and music as this machine will supplement my current Drobo storage.
My plans are for a 128GB SSD boot drive installed in one of the PCIe slots and then to load up all 4 of the 3.5" drive bays with WD Green hard drives. I have also ordered 4GB of replacement RAM, so upon removal of the faulty unit I will have 7GB.
Here is where I need advice because I am not very familiar with RAID and the differences between hardware or software raid. Am I better off getting four drives of the same size and setting them up as RAID 5 (I think) using Apple's RAID utility or should I throw in three 1TB drives and then install a fourth 3TB or 4TB drive as a Time Machine backup for the other three?
Should I upgrade the OSX to the technically unsupported latest version? Or is it not worth the trouble for this application?
Also, is there any benefit to upgrading the graphics card to the ATI Radeon 5770? Would this yield an improved image quality? I am outputting to a Denon AV Reciever and subsequently to a 100" projection screen, if that makes a difference. I also noticed the 5770 has an HDMI port, wich would be nice, but not necessary since I can use a DVI converter and woud still need to use the optical audio out anyway.
    Much obliged for any input

PCIe cards that use or support SSD are not bootable until you get to 2008 (and that is limited too).
Green are not suited for any form of array unless say NAS and WD RED.  Better option would be 3 x 2TB WD Blacks in a mirror, and too many people only use two drives, well 3 is much easier safer and works better. Might want to invest in www.SoftRAID.com product even.
Best price and quality, got my 1,1 with 8 x 2GB (ideal is 4 or 8 DIMMs)
    2x2GB FBDIMM DDR2 667MHz @ $25
    http://www.amazon.com/BUFFERED-PC2-5300-FB-DIMM-APPLE-Memory/dp/B002ORUUAC/
With price of 250GB SSD $155 I'd go with that or stick with $89 for 128GB .

  • Voice only plan with Rogers - any problems?

Hey there - i phoned roger's yesterday and was told a voice only plan that is purchased and costs over 35$ per month is elligble for the 199$ price tag ont he 3G 8GB iphone.
I was also told that i should not do a voice only plan because as the iphone apparently updates randomly and without your control, i could rack up a bill over 500$ because of data usage when the iphone updates.
    My question is:
    1. is this true?
    and
    2. is there anyway way to work aroudn this so i can use wi-fi for my internet needs and use my voice plan obviously for the phone part without being charge the apparent "500$"
    thanks.

I think you can turn off the browsing capabilities until you are at a WiFi or your own wireless network. You should have the say over when it updates, just as you would on your computer. So you would just make sure you're in a place where you have free internet access and let it update there.
But I don't have an iPhone, so this is just speculation.

  • New user of G4 - need advice on selection of printer, DV and digital camera

I am a recent convert to mac and need advice from experts on the following:
I plan to use my G4 MDD primarily for home computing, experimenting with digital photography, create DVDs and explore multimedia primarily as a hobby. Please advice me on selection of a decent digital camera and or a DV camera. I am not sure if I have a decent DV camera - whether this will be good enough for still photos as well. My G4 has firewire ports.
Also I am interested in buying a printer that I can use with my mac as well as connect to a two other windows systems. My printing needs are primarily documents and maybe photos.. I think that going in for a laser printer makes sense in terms of reliability .
I am not looking for the highend equipment - willing to spend upto 750 $ on all items. Thanks in advance.

    raja,
    welcome to discussions.
Digital Camera, DV camera and colour Laser Printer all for $750 ??
I'm afraid you'll have to go for an inkjet printer if you want colour photos. Expensive doesn't even begin to describe Colour Laser Printers. HP make good printers, but tend to be a bit more expensive to run, Epson make excellent photo printers, are are a bit more economical to run, take a look at the iP4000 and iP5000. I still use my old HP DeskJet 1200 (does A3), and a DeskJet 970Cxi (everyday), both use the same cartidges. These are about 7 years old, there are modern versions retailing now at about half of what I paid for these then(always the case).
Digital cameras can be decided by what purpose you intend to use them for. I have an 18 month old Nikon D100 digital SLR. 6M pixel (which was a lot then) but that might not matter, it takes Nikon lenses (and other manufacturer lenses to the same spec), so I can shoot with a 300mm, 400mm, 600mm lens. Nikon has a D50 out now, a cheaper, newer version of my camera. I can print A3 photo real from 6M pixels and with the right lens I don't need to crop my pictures too much. If you want to print photo real A4 (and that's a LOT of ink) a 3-4M pixel camera would be fine. Most cameras now are 5-8 M pixel, this is because the pictures they take have to be cropped drastically because they have an inadequate lens. On top of that my Nikon takes really great pictures, better than any of my other digi cameras (but not as good as my ancient Olympus 35mm muji-zoom compact with 200 film).
So if you're going to take a lot of close ups in well lit areas, product shots, interior shots with flash, ie. "snaps" rather than photography, any cheap digi camera will do. Good points are
    - USB / Firewire connectivity,
    - non-proprietry battery technology, ie. it uses 4 x recharable AAs instead of a battery that only fits that camera, and it comes with a AA recharger.
    - non-proprietry storage technology, ie. it uses Compact Flash or some other that is used by a large portion of cameras, rather than just be that manufacturer.
    - digital zoom is worthless.
If you're doing outdoor photography, wildlife, landscapes, etc, you may want something with a changeable lens and SLR technology, a digital SLR. Not all digital SLR cameras have changeable lenses. Same good points as above, but be prepared to sacrifice one of the points for a good camera. Heavy cameras are easier to hold steady with a big lens, so try for a metal case (it'll be coated in plastic anyway).
For outdoors the most important thing is the amount of light entering the camera (indoors you can control the lighting with flash / fitted lighting), digital SLRs can have enormous lenses (my 28mm hyperzoom lens has a 72mm diameter), compare this to a compact digital camera with a 12mm diameter lens, I take 36x the light of a compact. And it shows in the picture quality.
I'm a complete duffer with DV cameras so I won't lead you astray with this, but be aware some do offer the option to take digital pictures. Indeed some digital cameras can take low quality short movies.
Let us know if you have any more questions.

  • Need advice on a proof printer

Hello. So glad I found this site!
I'm currently a print graphic designer and starting a home based business integrating my print design knowledge with newly acquired web design skills to offer a complete package.
I am working on an HP computer, as I cannot afford the Mac I want now. I have all of the Adobe software for PC already, but need advice for a printer.
The machines I work on now are like $18k - 25k color lasers, and clearly that is not in my budget. I'm a little lost as to what to look for in a printer that can handle color proofs of my artwork. I create a lot of raster images in PS, but logo design is one of my focuses, so vector output is essential. I almost always create outlines of fonts for the final press ready file, so I'm not so worried about fonts, but color matching is important.
I've been reading about Postscript and PCL, but am still very confused.  I'm also a little confused as to what a rip does or if I need one.  We use one at my shop, and I know how to use it, but it lives on the server and was explained that it was only necessary for networking the printers.
I am planning to outsource all of my final printing, but I need a printer for proofing. I've been looking at inkjets for affordability reasons, but now I'm not sure if I need a color laser.
    Help!!

Dear VectorGirly,  I currently have an OKI Postscript c9800 printer. I use postscript printers because I calibrate and use color profiles to get the closest colour match to the outsourced commercial print that I can. I know this is more than you budgeted for, but it really depends what you end up focusing on. (ie web or print). I focus more on print, hence my printer has to proof postscript correctly for me. I am PC based but my files print to both PC and Mac platforms.
Regarding logos and colors ... firstly, my monitor is calibrated with a Pantone Huey. I use matching color profiles in all my design programs: Indesign, Illustrator, Photoshop. My print PDFs include the color profiles. When I email or post proofs of logos or corporate stationery to clients I make sure they understand that colors will look different on various monitors because they are not calibrated for print and are RGB or color prism based rather than CMYK for print. Even if you choose a Pantone color, unless everything is calibrated and with color profiles, it's unlikely that you will get the same color on your screen, let alone on the client's screen. And if the client is wanting a color that looks good on their screen, it's even harder. I always recommend they look at the proof colours on various screens including friends so they can understand how it changes according to monitors.
Regarding PCL and Postscript: When I purchased my OKI (and my former Fuji Xerox pscript), I sent an existing print PDF (that had gone to commercial print previously) to the head office and asked them to do printouts of all the printers I was interested in. All the printers based as PCL were very inaccurate color. The two with postscript took my PDF and printed correctly and were very close to the final printed output. As I am pedantic on colour (colour in Australian spelling), I had to choose the high end postcript laser. Having said that, I am also very interested in the Fuji Xerox Phaser 8500 which is postscript and solid ink (great for the environment and people with allergies and low running costs - much better than laser) - but I need the A3 and banner printing option and they haven't made one for that size yet. I am hoping the new release may offer a bigger size paper. I have a very high allergy level and have to have the window open and a mask on when changing toners and printing, hence my interest in the solid ink for the future.
I always download my fonts through the print PDF to the printer - I never use printer inbuilt fonts. This is so I know that WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) when I print commercially as they also download/use the embedded PDF fonts.
Also, somewhere down the line you may find yourself forced to choose between focusing on web and print.
I recommend you choose what you love best.

  • HELP: New to Mavericks. Need advice on setting up secure user accounts

    Hi,
I need advice on how to best set up user accounts on Mavericks.
I must set up an Administrative account...Any suggestion for best settings here to protect against targeted malicious exploits?
I would also like to set up two user accounts for everyday work with applications and Internet browsing done in such a way that the machine would be protected from malicious attacks but with a minimum of inconvience for the users ( myself and my wife ).
    Thanks

Hi hassiman, any exploits will come in the form of users downloading suspect pieces of software like browser add-ons and extensions, device drivers and non-trusted apps.
Make sure that you do not use the admin account for any day to day use
Create two normal user accounts, one for each of you and use them day to day
When using the admin account to set up your system, pay very careful attention to the System Preferences > Privacy & Security area. There are various things to set up properly here:
There are three settings for how people can download software, 1) From Mac App Store only, 2) From App Store and registered developers and 3) from anyone. It defaults to 2) but check it and if you feel uncomfortable with that, set it to 1). This might prevent you from downloading and installing software you think you might need; but think carefully about wether you really need it and therefore wether you should temporarily allow it via a lower setting.
For the firewall, if you dont have a firewalled internet gateway device (a wireless router or similar), make sure the firewall is turned on. Most internet connection equipment does have such a firewall; make sure it is blocking any incoming connections by using its admin tool (usually a web browser interface). Consult its documentation for details.
Whenever OS X asks for a password to complete a task of any kind, look carefully at what is making it ask and if you aren't sure, don't go through with it; it is usually wanting the admin account name and ppassword to complete some kind of system modification (install, config etc.).
Make sure that you are both aware of the danger of installing any software that wants to add itself to your system or web browser. Things like custom search bars, extensions etc. If you are viewing a web page and it says you need "x" to see it or use it properly, make sure you really need to use that web site; otherwise don't do it.
It really all comes down to common sense; the worst security breaches and damage come from users who don't know what to do, but they still click "OK" when they should be clicking "cancel" or "close". Make sure you and your wife are fully aware that responsibility lies with yourselves. It is better to take a minute to decide wether to install something (even if it's 20 times a week) than spend days fixing a compromised system.

  • Newbie needs advice on starting a project

Hi all.. New to DVD Pro, need the wisdom of experienced users before I waste a whole lot of time....
I've got a show mixed (2 cameras, multitracked audio mixed in logic express and synch'd) and rendered from final cut express to a self-contained QT movie, 16 GB, runs maybe 90 minutes, with a dozen or so chapters representing different scenes.
The intended product is a DVD for friends, families, actors, and support for grant writing to philanthropic organizations (it's a small grant-budgeted theater of disabled adults). The DVD should, of course "play all" and each segment.
I plan to have a main menu to choose "play all, scenes 1-6, scenes 6-12", not sure if I'll need 2 or 3 submenus....
    Here is the question.....
Shall I import as an asset just the whole show (which I think is what I should do), or should I break it and render each "chapter marker" from FCE to a separate .mov (the temptation would be that each segment could fade in and out from black, rather than cut in abruptly and end abruptly with a return to a menu). Alternatively, if I used segments with fade-ins and fade-outs, it would lose the continuity of the seamless "whole show" when the view chooses "play all".
That's why I need advice - because I don't know how it's all gonna work, what the options and capabilities are, but I felt like i needed to get beyond iDVD.
So thanks in advance for any words of wisdom!!!!
btw... it will be done on a late-2008 vintage 2.4 GHz core duo macbook pro with 2 GB ram, 250 GB hard drive, osX 10.5.?, dvd studio pro 4
    Thanks again! Peter

    If you want to be able to play just parts of your video as well as a "play all" then what you need are Stories. There is a complete tutorial on setting up stories at;

  • Need advice on network migration

    Hi experts !
Good day to you all! I would like to have your advice regarding our plan to
migrate our customer network as I'm need to know whether our migration plan
is feasible to work on. I would like also to know what other good
alternatives that we could refer to beside our own migration plan. Our
migration plan is concentrated on the top level of both network which is the
most critical part. During the implementation of new network, we want to
retain the existing network set up (internet gateway and firewall) and at
the same time, set up both C7204VXR (we called it 'border-router') and two
new firewall accordingly. Based on the diagram, both firewall (which are
configured as a cluster) are using the existing firewall (Firewall-A) as
their temporary 'default gateway' since both 'border-router' on the new set
up has not yet connected to new leased-line services.
'Border-router', firewall cluster and existing firewall (Firewall-A) are
connected to a plain (unmanaged) switch in 111.168.100.0/27 network. The
existing firewall (Firewall-A) is in routed/NAT mode. One interface is
connected to their internal network and another connected to the new
network. Routing is shall be done on the existing firewall itself. Both
'border-router' would use GLBP for redundancy and similar to firewall
cluster which has its own virtual-IP. Once both 'border-router' are
connected to new leased-line services, the firewall cluster will pointing to
GLBP of 'border-router' as its 'default-gateway'. In terms of routing, I
going to use static routing configured in firewalls and 'border-router' as
initial start and might change to a dynamic routing (if possible) once the
    migration is fully complete.
    So, my questions are;
    i. Based on your understanding, is this plan workable?
ii. Alternative ways to plan for better migration?
iii. In term of IP addressing, is this okay? (Note: IP address are not real
but the address arrangement is same)
I'm new to this migration and I seek for advice on this.
    Thanks very much and regards,
    Daniel Alex
p/s: If you need more explanation, I'm feel really glad to give.

    Hi Alex,
In terms of GLBP I would make sure that I'ld use the "host dependent" load-balancing algorithm, so your hosts accessing the internet use always the same source IP when communicating with a server.

Your plan looks fine do far. You could have planned the new inside network as a temporary DMZ on the old firewall, so the transition runs smoothly ..
