Need advice on oracle standalone/RAC hosts public hostname changes

Hi, We just had a datacenter move and original oracle database hosts (including both standalone and RAC nodes) got changed their public hosntame, ip/vip, getway etc.
I want to know do I have to deinstall everything then reinstall or a quicker way to deal with those?
Thanks

If just the public IP's or VIP's had changed this could be done without re-installing the binaries, using oifcfg and srvctl.
However the change in hostname is not supported as per Oracle Note "RAC: Frequently Asked Questions [ID 220970.1]".
It refers to the following to reconfigure your GI.....How to Modify or Deinstall Oracle Grid Infrastructure
This reconfiguration will likely be quicker than a re-install.

  • DO I need SFRAC for Oracle 10g RAC  on Sun Solaris

My platform is SUN Solaris 10 64 bit on v490 server. On the backend side, we are using EMC CX500 storage. We will use Veritas File system and Veritas CFS.
I would like to ask, Do I must need SFRAC to configure Oracle 10g RAC or Can I just use only Oracle CRS. I do not want to use ASM.
    Please advise
    Thanks,
    Sam..

The VCFS usually requires a Veritas Cluster, thus you would have to use the product combination that is bundled as SFRAC as mentioned before. Metalink in addition says:
10      10gR2 64-bit      Veritas Storage Foundation for Oracle RAC      5.0      Certified
There is one exception to this rule: Linux.
Veritas and Oracle support a standalone version of the Veritas Cluster Files System (and only this component) on Linux. This does not hold true for Solaris.
Concluding, if you want to use the VCFS you would need to get a VCS, which then basically means using SFRAC.
However, in this case, as mentioned before, you would not need ASM.

  • Need advices on oracle 9i

    Hi all:
I have a few questions on oracle and hope get nice advices!!
    1) I have Ms sql 2000 on my window Xp if I download oracle 9i on the same computer is that any conflict?
    2) which oracle I sould dowload ? since there are more than one on oracle.com
3)is there any oracle free driver?
    4) use which server to connect web and oracle is bester? I have experience use tomcat to connect Ms sql 2000
    any advice will appreciate
    Thank you

any advice will appreciate I've just downloaded oracle 9i (the three zip files took a few hours to download using cable internet connection). The install gives you three options, I selected the first option (Enterprise???) and it hung after going through about 59%. So, I killed the process and tried to reinstall. It wouldn't reinstall because some of the files (dll???) are opened.... had to reboot to save mode and manually delete the directories (BTW, it takes about 2.5gb to install the program). After having removed everything, I selected the 2nd installed option (whatever that was) and it went through OK after nearly 1/2 hour on my AMD K6-III 450, 384mb of memory, with Windows XP Pro. After rebooting, I noticed that oracle 9i is using over 90mb of memory. My system is loaded with j2sdk1.4.2beta. When I tried to run my program after installing oracle, my program wouldn't work -- took me a while to figure out that oracle added path to JVM 1.3.1 (automatically installed by oracle) to my system PATH......
Well, I've got oracle installed (haven't tried it yet), but here are my suggestions:
    1) Get the CD's (you'll have to pay for it) unless you can download it overnight using high-speed internet connection.
    2) Make sure you have enough disk space and memory.
    3) If you're not using 1.3.1, make sure you fix the PATH statement after the install.
Hopefully this will help alleviate some of the frustrations I experienced.

  • Need Advice on Oracle database 10.2.0.4.0 on RedHat Linux AS 4

    Hi,
I would like to know whether Oracle Database 10.2.0.4.0 is certified to run on the RedHat Linux AS 4 (Nahant Update 6) with HugeMem Kernel?
actually, we were running the Oracle 10g(10.2.0.4.0) database on RedHat Linux AS 4 (Nahant Update 6) with SMP kernel. We faced "out of memory" error so we are planning to change the kernel to HugeMem from SMP.
Any suggestions on this would be highly appreciated!!!
    Thanks in advance!!!
    Siva

If you were facing the out of memory errors, could you elaborate more on the circumstances these errors showed up? You could be facing the same situation after upgrading the OS if you don't properly diagnose the root cause.

  • Oracle 10g RAC/Grid rename hostname and re-ip server?

Here is the situation. We are installing Oracle 10g in a RAC/Grid configuration. Servers were installed and configured with static IP's and unique hostname's according to instructions. The problem is the servers are being shipped to another location and the on-site administrators will have to rename the hostname's and give all the servers new IP addresses.
    The question:
Is it possible to rename the hostname's and re-ip all the servers without having to reinstall all the Oracle servers in the RAC/Grid? Does anybody have any information on what will need to successfully accomplish this?
    Regards,
    Ed Bragg

    Hi Ed!
I never tried this but I believe that after changing the IP addresses and reconfiguring the virtual IP's it should work. What you have to do is to reconfigure the ssh stuff with the keys, etc.

  • Oracle 9i rac interconnect

    Hai,
I need clarification in oracle 9i rac internetconnect. Recently we have done installation of oracle 9i rac (9.2.0.4) on aix 5.3 with hacmp cluster for 2 nodes. We are not able to mount the second instance of the database after starting the first instance.
The problem was solved after adding cluster_interconnect parameter in the init.ora file. In all other servers, it is not given and oracle is selecting the interconnect automatically. For this new server alone this problem. I want to know from whether oracle is taking this interconnect if we dont mention the cluster_interconnect paramter. Even i have verified /etc/hosts file and entries are available in it. Requeting your help in this regard.

Where the IP information is stored and managed from depends on your implementation such as are you using a third party clusterware. If you are using Oracle clusterware its stored in the OCR.
You can check this using the following query...
    SELECT * FROM GV$CLUSTER_INTERCONNECTS;
The source column will tell you where the interconnect information was obtained from.
BTW, if you are using the CLUSTER_INTERCONNECTS parameter you may loose some of the HA features here is something from the 10gR2 documentation..
" Failover and Failback and CLUSTER_INTERCONNECTS
Some operating systems support run-time failover and failback. However, if you use the CLUSTER_INTERCONNECTS initialization parameter, then failover and failback are disabled."
Question, have you tried other options such as NIC pairing and bonding to have dual interconnects instead of using the CLUSTER_INTERCONNECTS parameter.
Please check Metalink Note # 298891.1 talks about configuring NIC bonding on Linux there are similar options for other operating systems.

If you'd like to change HOSTNAME... Metalink (NOTE:220970.1)
Can I change the public hostname in my Oracle Database 10g Cluster using Oracle Clusterware?
Hostname changes are not supported in Oracle Clusterware (CRS), unless you want to perform a deletenode followed by a new addnode operation.
The hostname is used to store among other things the flag files and Oracle Clusterware stack will not start if hostname is changed.
    Changing the Private Interconnect
o Change of the IP Address: change the IP address in the hosts file and/or DNS and make sure that ASM and the database also use the same interconnect
o Change of the private node name used by Oracle Clusterware: requires a reinstall of Oracle Clusterware
So, Public or Private hostnames can only be changed by removing/adding nodes, or reinstalling Oracle Clusterware. VIP Hostnames can be changed
But you can read this idea (reinstall CRS)

You should spend some time in a test lab where you can test this stuff for yourself. Read the documentation and there are tons of sites out there that purport to have all of your RAC/TAF/FAN/FAF questions. - I would read and trust the documentation first.

  • Oracle 11gR2 RAC VM and SCAN and DNS and /etc/hosts (two) setup questions

    Hi,
I am looking forward to setting up two Oracle 11gR2 RAC instances
on my Oracle VM test machine.
I plan on using the Oracle 11gR2 RAC VM template.
I want the final Oracle 11gR2 RAC instances to have SCAN that uses DNS.
The DNS will be pre-installed in the JeOS.
My first simple question about the setup is the following.
In my DNS name file, for example,
    /var/named/chroot/var/named/milkyway.univ.db
do I need to provide the racnode1 and racnode2 information,
    for example,
    # DNS name file (snippet)
    myjeos IN A 192.168.1.150
    racnode1 IN A 192.168.1.161
    racnode1-vip IN A 192.168.1.163
    racnode2 IN A 192.168.1.162
    racnode2-vip IN A 192.168.1.164
    rac-scan IN A 192.168.1.131
    rac-scan IN A 192.168.1.132
    rac-scan IN A 192.168.1.133
Or, can I just provide only the rac-scan information
    # DNS name file alternate (snippet)
    myjeos IN A 192.168.1.150
    rac-scan IN A 192.168.1.131
    rac-scan IN A 192.168.1.132
    rac-scan IN A 192.168.1.133
What I am getting at is the following.
Within the install process, will racnode1, racnode1-vip, racnode2,
and racnode2-vip host names and their IP address be written
to the RAC instances /etc/hosts files? (So I should not bother
to put them in the DNS name file like '# DNS name file alternate (snippet)'?)
Or, should I put the racnode and racnode-vip host names and IP addresses
in the DNS name file like '# DNS name file (snippet)'?
The second question is the following.
Are the cluster name and the scan name allowed to be different?
Currently, I would plan them to be different,
    for example, rac-cluster and rac-scan.
Or, are they required to be the same,
    for example, rac-cluster and rac-cluster.
    Thank you.

    AIM wrote:

We write this data out to /etc/hosts just to reduce the amount of round-trip DNS requests the cluster nodes make for themselves.

  • Need advice regarding physical standby databases in rac environment on orac

need advice regarding physical standby databases in rac environment on oracle 10G r2
I like to have have a Primary ( 10 node RAC cluster ) shipping to a physical standby ( 3 node RAC cluster ) shipping using LGWR .
So I have a lot of questions
    1) What will be the performance overhead on the Primay if we are using LGWR SYNC option .
    2) Does the overhead depends on the physical distance between primary & physical
3)Do you recommend a seperate private network for shipping logs between primary and standby.
    4) I know that DGMGRL supports RAC only from 10g. So are there any know issues are bugs using DGMGRL is RAC environments.
    Thanks in advance

Generally you should have same CPU architecture and same operating system but it's not mandatory to have the exactly the same CPU model, the same number of CPU, the same RAM size etc.
Actually starting with 11.1 you don't need to have the same hardware setup: it 's even possible to have primary and standby database on different platforms: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28294/standby.htm#i72053.

    Dear All,
I have tried to set up a Oracle 10g RAC Release 2.

The nodes setting as the following:
    nodes 1:
    Public address: 172.16.0.121
Private address: 192.168.0.121, 192.168.1.121 (dual path for heart beat)

But when i run the command "$ ./runcluvfy.sh comp nodecon -n shk01,shk02 -verbose"
    it shows the error:
    ERROR:

    Result: Node connectivity check failed.
I did try to add the VIP address on bge0:1, as i using bge0 for the public address.
Both nodes i did using the same interface name for it.
Anyone have idea for me to check out the error?
Also, I have other question about the raw device.
As there is option for setting for ASM or raw device. If choosing raw device, does it mean that it just need to
format the storage disk but without newfs it? And then the Oracle program will able to handle it?
    Thanks,
    Xentar

You don't seem to state categorically that you are using Solaris Cluster, so I'll assume it since this is mainly a forum about Solaris Cluster (and IMHO, Solaris Cluster with Clusterware is better than Clusterware on its own).
Clusterware has to see the same device names from all cluster nodes. This is why Solaris Cluster (SC) is a positive benefit over Clusterware because SC provides an automatically managed, consistent name space. Clusterware on its own forces you to manage either the symbolic links (or worse mknods) to create a consistent namespace!
So, given the SC consistent namespace you simple add the raw devices into the ASM configuration, i.e. /dev/did/rdsk/dXsY. If you are using Solaris Volume Manager, you would use /dev/md/<setname>/rdsk/dXXX and if you were using CVM/VxVM you would use /dev/vx/rdsk/<dg_name>/<dev_name>.
Of course, if you genuinely are using Clusterware on its own, then you have somewhat of a management issue! ... time to think about installing SC?

  • SCAN Name issue in Oracle 11gR2 RAC Installation

    Hi,
I am trying to install Oracle 11gR2 RAC on VM ware and I got the INS-40922 (Invalid SCAN name). Do I need to create the SCAN name prior to the installation?
I have public, private, and VIP's. I am not sure how I create this SCAN Name. Please share your thoughts
    Thanks

During installation of grid infrastructure SCAN will be automatically created. If you are using DNS then put the scan name and scan ip addresses entries in DNS . If you are not using dns/gns then put scanname and scan ipadress hosts file on each node in the cluster. Before installation, you should not be able to ping scan ipadresses.
