Need advice on Repairing Disk Permissions...

I need some input from those who know how to Repair Disk Permissions (under Disk Utility, for those who don't know).
Basically, I lost a TON of my Access and Privileges on my G4 recently--which I really only noticed after iTunes would no longer let me import anything (no matter how many times I tried changing the Ownership & Permissions on my Music folder's Info section)--which, I might add, I suffered due to a virus caused by Limewire. As had been suggested to me, I Verified Disk Permissions, and saw that I had a TON of problems listed on my startup HD. So I'm now seeking ways to repair them.
Now, the most obvious way is using the Repair Disk Permissions program (which I've actually never had to use before). However, under OS10.3.9, when I select the Repair Disk Permissions on Disk Utility, in listing all my Drives available, it actually shows the drive in 2 formats/pictures:
1) the actual technical name/manufactor model/GB size of the drive (on top), and
2) the Desktop name and Icon picture of the Drive as it appears on my desktop.
This confuses me: as you can guess, the startup Drive in question is only partioned as one. So on Disk Utility, which of these 2 pictured drives do I have to highlight and Repair Disk Permissions to (i.e. 19GB Maxtor32049 Vs. 'HAL')?
Also, for those of you who have used other means (programs) to change Disk Permissions, which would you recommend? For example, I got a program from Versiontracker called BatCHmod, but I don't know if something like it is any safer than just using Repair Disk Permissions. Because unfortunately, I'm running out of room on my disk, and don't have nearly enough space on my other drive to hope to back the whole Drive up to.
Please help!!!

Hi phasmatrope!
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk HAL, in the left column.
2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP until the only message it reports is:
"We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./System/Library/Filesystems/cd9660.fs/cd9660.util.
New permissions are 33261"
This is a status message and not a cause for concern. You may safely ignore it.
Or these:
"We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/jobs. New uid is 1"
"We are using a special uid for the file or directory ./private/var/at/spool. New uid is 1"
Again, these are status messages, which appeared after Security Update 2005-001.
There may be others that you can ignore. Complete lists at link below.
Spurious Permissions Errors In 10.3.x
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".
Good Luck!

  • Worried about need to constantly repair disk permissions

Here is my analysis and conclusions as to why I need to constantly repair disk permissions:
I recently got the top-o'-the-line iMac (see info below) which shipped with Lion but since I wanted Snow Leopard (just because I have a few PowerPC games that I can't live  without) I reformatted the hard drive - into 1 partition from the 2 that Lion had - and installed Snow Leopard and went back to business as usual....only with one **** great and fast computer. BTW, as far as I know this computer is exactly the same computer that shipped with Snow Leopard prior to Lion's introduction. I swore that I would never get another desktop computer because this one would last me forever. My only hesitation now is because the need to constantly repair permissions means something is not right. On the one hand I could just keep on repairing (daily?) the permissions for the next 20 years, or.... what? Is it possible (or should I be asking Apple itself instead of in this forum) that there is some other difference between the Snow Leopard and the Lion versions of  this iMac - is this what "firmware" is all about? - that produces this constant need to repair permissions? If that's the case, would Apple give me a Snow Leopard-friendly logic board (and/or install the correct firmware) in exchange for the Lion logic board - or am I just going to have to live with having to perform this permissions-update function? Or is having to repair disk permissions not a big deal or something worrying about? Any ideas would be appreciated - thanks!

  • Need advice on Repair Disc Permissions

I've noticed a few minor bugs with some of my software programs, until Dreamweaver blew up in my face. Suddenly, it took forever to start and often took forever to process certain functions.
I haven't figured out the problem yet, but it occurred to me that I haven't repaired my disk permissions in ages. So I restarted my computer, opened Utilities and clicked Repair Disk Permissions.
I wasn't surprised to see a list of three or four dozen problems. Nine of them begin with...
    Permissions differ on Systems/Library/CoreServices/FrontRow.app/Contents
    Another fifteen begin with...
    Permissions differ on Systems/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iPhotoAccess.Framework/Versions/A
I repaired my disk permissions three or four times, but the same list of errors keeps appearing. So I need some advice on what to do next. Do I keep repairing disk permissions over and over, hoping some of these errors eventually get fixed?
I clicked Verify Disk, and it said there were no apparent errors. So I guess I just need to find a way to zap these disk permissions errors.
On the positive side, Dreamweaver is now starting properly, so maybe repairing my disk permissions fixed something after all.
    Thanks for any tips.

  • Itunes locks up, and I need to repair disk permissions.

Itunes locks up on my Imac after it has been running for a while. I have had to repair disk permissions, which show many Itunes corrections are needed. I am running the latest Itunes.

Disable Photo Stream in iPhoto's preferences and then go back and reenable it. See if that will jump start the process.  If that doesn't help try this:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto check its preferences to meka sure all is as you expect and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

  • Trying to download a game purchase (Company App Store. Have taken advice from Aspyr Customer Service to repair Disk Permissions, but still download aborts...any suggestions?

Trying to download game purchase (Company of Heroes) from App Store. Failed in mid-download several times. Aspyr Customer Services have shown me how to repair Disk Permissions, but still won't download... any suggestions, please?

Thanks for suggestions. I did use Energy Saver settings, and I did check downloading another app. Last night I tried another download of Company of Heroes, got up to 4GB before bedtime, woke up this morning to find another "error has occurred" message. Extremely frustrating. Have used most of my monthly data allowance on abortive downloads. Maybe Apple made a mistake in relying on huge data downloads. DVDs more reliable!

  • Repair Disk Permissions utility stalled - I have read the knowledge base

I have researched the knowledge base and search for posts on this and cannot find answer: Running 10.4 at the latest version. used the original install 1 disc I received with Tiger to repair disc permissions (like Apple support has told me to do in the past, but my current research said I do not need to do this unless certain parameters are met, and none of the parameters applied, but oh well, I am here anyway). Cold Boot from the original install disc 1 and slected the start up disk I use (I only have one start up disc/drive). Did a repair disc permissions and got a long running routine that reporting a lot of fixes, then the utility has stalled -- no progress on the progress bar. I "stopped" the process using the "stop repair" button (three times). The log reflected the utility stopped, but the progress bar still is blue and not moving (for a couple of hours). When I go to quity File >Disk Utility, it warns me that Disk Utility is running and this may make my system unstable/unsuable.
QUESTION: CAN I JUST QUIT DISK UTILITY AND NOT HAVE ANY ADVERSE AFFECT ON MY IMAC DRIVE?

Thanks for your advice, I still have an issue:
-after the first repair disk permission "stalled" process, I exited Disk Utility and cold booted the machine after I had disconnected all external devices other than the original iMac keyboard
-obtained the combo patch for 10.4.7 from the Apple download site (it had already been installed but I reinstalled per your advice)
-re-applied the combo patch and then did another cold boot
-ran Disk Utility from the original Tiger install #1 disk, and then selected "repair disk permissions" for my start up disk (I only have one)
    - process ran for 10 minutes or so then gave the following error message: "Disk Utility Error: Disk Utility has lost its connection with disk utility management tool and cannot continue. Please quit disk utility and re-launch disk utility"
    - I pushed the "stop disk permission repair" button, then quit disk utility, then cold booted the machine again.
-re-applied combo patch as above, then cold booted the machine
-ran disk utility from the original iMac install #1 disk, ran "repair disk permissions", and then received the same error message as above.
    - I then just quit Disk Utility and cold booted the machine again and went about my business. There does not seem to be any problem with the machine (was not before, but I ran repair permissions thinkging this was a routine maintenance taks that should be run)
    - in my prior search of the knowledge base, I found the following information about repair disk permissions:
    Location: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607495&#607495
How often should I Repair Permissions?
You do not need to Repair Permissions on a regular basis.
There are only three occasions you need to do this:
    1. When you have just installed something that required you to run an Installer, rather than just copying some software to a folder. This should be done for both Apple and non-Apple software.
    2. When you have been working on your OS X files or folders while booted from OS 9, or remotely connected via a non-OS X machine, since OS 9 and other systems do not handle OS X's permissions correctly.
    3. The other case is if your system is behaving strangely, when you should run Disk Repair from your CD followed by Repair Permissions. This is just to eliminate these things before going on to further trouble-shooting.
Otherwise you can happily forget about Permissions!"
So, it would appear I do not need to do anything else; the machine seems to be working properly. Is there anything else I need to do? thanks for the help! Bob

  • Repair Disk Permissions - ODD !

I learnt yesterday about the importance of Repairing Disk Permissions although I admit it makes no sense to me why the whole permissions thing is about and the Apple web page about it may as well be in martian. Nonetheless I did repair disk permissions on my MBPro with 10.4.11.
So today I turned to my new MacPro with OSX 10.5.7 which I've had for 3 months and did a Repair Disk Permissions to see what happened. Slowly it created a LONG list of Permissions that differ and repaired them, eg: Application/iTunes....../Code Resources, should be -rw-rw-r-- they are lrw-rw--
Then, I downloaded and installed Firefox 3.0 and thought it best to follow the advice and do another Repair Disk Permissions.
Yet again, this task took a long time (much longer than it does on my MBPro with 10.4.11) and I can't be sure but I swear it identified some of the same permissions that needed repairing before, which supposedly were repaired, less than 30 minutes ago. EG : that listed above !
WHY would it need to repair permissions twice if the only thing going on in the interim was playing music on iTunes and downloading Firefox via Safari ?

    Niel,
just so you know where I got the idea from, KLAUS1 Posted: Jun 13, 2009 8:16 PM

  • Constantly having to repair disk permissions after hanging system

From the time I purchased this I've had ongoing issues with the java, flash, OS updates causing the computer to hang forever. Sometimes I end up having to press the off button because Command Q and Command/Option/Escape won't allow a force quit even after a 20 minute wait. I don't know enough about what's going on behind the boot up to know what's wrong. Here is a copy of my console log and this is exactly what they look like each time after I have gone in and done a disk verify, (says it's okay) and then repair disk permissions. I've had to boot to safe mode 3 times today and repair permissions due to this issue. There is nothing plugged into the computer except the power cord. The OS is up to date per Software Update and the only 3rd party software installed is SKYPE ...

Can anyone see the issue or tell me what I need to do to fix this thing???

Which MacBook model? Did it come with OSX 10.6 or did you upgrade it?

  • Repair Disk Permissions Issues

I'm not sure I am posting this in the correct community but here goes . . .
I have a 17" Macbook Pro running the latest version of Snow Leopard. It is almost 2 years old and I have 4 gb RAM.
Recently, it seems to be slowing down and I have to run repair disk permissions 2-3 times a week to recoup a little speed. I also delete my Firefox cache regularly to try to gain a little there. I do make a few videos in iMovie and initially I thought that was the problem but this week I have not really worked in iMovie much and it is still slow. There seems to be some issues in the log of the repair permissions. I hope they show in this image. I don't know what these mean or how to fix them. It is the "permissions differ" entries I am confused about.

You can ignore those permissions per support article
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21090
Since you brought up iMove, I suspect your storage is nearly full as this most certainly causes the computer to slow down. video files are the biggest culprit.
Look in your Activity Monitor and reduce the drive space by copying to a external, Disk Utility HFS+ formatted external powered drive of unnecessary files so your boot drive is ideally below 50% filled (yea I know but the computer slows down after that) and not more than 75% filled.
Once you have done that. Get another newer external powered HFS drive and download the free Carbon Copy Cloner and clone the internal drive to the external.
Hold option and boot off the external clone, test it out then use Disk Utility to erase the internal and then reverse clone the external onto the internal, this will defragment and optimize your drive so the OS and programs are on the fast part of the drive, not the slow parts.
Reboot into the internal and run off of the free OnyX's maintainence and cleaning aspects and reboot.
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/
Sir speedy machine here we come!
Now of course you may have other issues that could be causing your slow down, like not enough RAM or some sort of failed process or leftover program, tweaks or simply a slow Internet.
You can opt to simply reinstall OS X 10.6 ( by holding c and booting off the installer disk ) over your installed version (doesn't touch files or programs) then immediatly Software Updating until clear, that will clean anything hanging out in OS X.
If you still have slowdowns, then it's in what geeks call "User land" basically something installed outside of root, like a program or only runs in user, not in OS X.
For that you need to create a new user, transfer your files via the Shared Drop and wean yourself off the old user and finally delete it. Also install all new versions of your third party programs removing the originals first.
    That should do it.

  • Repair disk permissions.SUID issue- Unable to get some applications to load

I need some help in repairing disk permissions ...It is affecting an application I am trying to install (1Password) in which I cannot due to applications being run by user = root.

I would appreciate someone walking me through this SUID issue.

    Hi gmckay,
The "Waring:SUID file..." messages are only warning message and are not a concern. The SUID bit is supposed to be set on those file. This is a glitch in the installer program- that does not update the installer database with the correct SHA1 digest for those files. The secure.log entry is a glitch in the newsyslog.conf file that sets the permissions on the secure.log less permissive than those recorded in the installer database. The ACL warning messages are caused by another glitch in the installer database. What concerns me are the double ACL messages for "LIbrary". Is this a typo?

Then I sometimes get the brown screen that states,You must re-start your computer.
I have already zeroed out the hard drive and re-installed Panther and the upgrade Tiger disc.
I repair permissions using the Tiger disc upgrade.
Can anyone help me with this??

    > I repair permissions using the Tiger disc upgrade.
One thing to note...  When running Repair Disk Permissions, it is best to run it while started up normally, from your normal startup disk, not from a Mac OS X installation disc.  The only time you should run it while started up from an installation disc is if some problem is preventing you from starting up normally. OTOH, Repair Disk can only be used when starting up from a different disk (such as an installation disc).
So, I would start up normally, run Disk Utility, and use Repair Disk Permissions on your normal startup disk.
NOTE:  Repair Disk Permissions often gives alerts messages that can be ignored.  They are more "informational," not serious errors.

You should still run it periodically.  When you run it, what needs to be repaired has been repaired; consider the rest of it an FYI.  I've never experience a problem, where a Repair Disk Permissions message actually caused a problem.  But, if you ever get an error while running Repair Disk (or Verify Disk), that is usually a serious problem.

  • Warning Message after repairing disk permissions

I received the following warning after running Repair Disk Permissions:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
My computer has been crashing a lot. Apple ran hardware tests and everything appears to be running OK. Could this message hold the key to my problems?

Probably not, please read this Apple Advice Letter:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
However it would be very beneficial if you provide more information about the circumstances and specifications of your iMac to determine why it's crashing. Also if you are running Activity Monitor to check and see how much FREEE RAM you have and if there are any processes taking up a lot of % CPU.

  • Repairing disk permissions keeps giving same message

I routinely verify my HD and repair disk permissions. The latter often indicates repairs are needed, especially after installation of new software or updates (I repair before and after). But once repaired, if I verify the permissions they come out ok -- i.e., no repairs are needed. Until just recently. I am now getting the following message after repairing permissions:
    Verify permissions for “Macintosh HD”
    Determining correct file permissions.
Permissions differ on ./private/var/log/secure.log, should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r-----
    Permissions verification complete
The privileges have been verified or repaired on the selected volume
If I verify permissions after repairing this, I get the same message again. So the repair is not holding. I am running OS X 10.4.11 and I recall that on earlier OS's there were sometimes innocuous repairs that kept being required, but that were not really a problem. But under 10.4.11 a repair has usually been good, and clears the deck. Until now. Any ideas?
Update: I am no longer having this problem. Possibly I was clicking on the verify permissions button instead of the repair button. I have used DU many times, so this would be a fairly boneheaded thing to do at this point. Maybe familiarity breeds carelessness? In any event, I often get the message above when I check disk permissions, and I would be curious to know why it is one of the more common repairs needed. So let's make that my question instead...
    TIA

Not to worry about it, that secure.log is a common one for that.
Repair Permissions checks Library>Receipts to find out the proper Permissions, that file's Permissions may exist in more than one and/or some OS component doesn't know the new/latest permissions when using it.

  • Verify/Repair disk permissions

I heard that it's a good idea to verify and repair disk permissions. What does that do? And, when should I do it?

    Hi, again, Eric.
My, we're curious today, aren't we?
