Need advice on upgrade from Snowleopard to Lion on MacBk Pro (15" late 2008)

I want to be able to synch my calendar on new iPhone, home MacBook Pro and office PC (with MS Office)... and I think I have figured out that I need to get Lion on my Mac instead of Snow Leopard.  Are there things I need to do to make this upgrade actually work?  I am a big user, but not so much a smart Mac user... kind of new to it.. advice appreciated.  pitfalls or suggestions... any reasons not to do it?

So, do you have any advice about how I can synch my MacBookPro calendar with my iPhone?
Apple has incorporated features like that into iCloud, then restricted that to only users of 10.7 Lion as  leverage. They won't allow iCloud on 10.6 because people wouldn't upgrade. 10.6 runs a lot of expensive previously purchased software that there isn't a upgrade out yet. If people install Lion anyway on older hardware it slows most machines down and that encourages them to buy a new Mac prematurely. So you see what's going on here.
Apple changes stuff way too fast, then they quickly burn their bridges and previous users  behind them in the process. For instance, Apple doesn't support 10.5 at all anymore with security and stabilty updates, and that's a mere 4 year old OS X version.
Not to praise Microsoft, but they do support 10 year old XP still, 5 year old Vista and Windows 7 is going to be supported for at least 10 years or even longer. Windows 8 is going to run Windows 7 software too. So with Windows PC you can run your hardware until it drops dead, buy your software once every 10 years.
Apple has this crazy notion that we all should be replacing our hardware and expensive software on a 3 year basis. When in reality properly taken care of Mac hardware can last a decade easily, I have a XP friend who's Dell desktop is over 10 years old and still works fine.
If your a luxury consumer and just use your Mac for the basics,  can keep up with the 3-4 year expensive hardware and software changes, then buy all means buy a new Mac with Lion and get iCloud and then sync to your iPhone. Use the old Mac as backup for software that isn't ready for 10.7 yet.
If your more a Pro and/or conservative user, perhaps have a heavy investment in software, your machine is working perfectly, have a more longterm objective, then you should consider forgoing the new OS X features until third party software has released Lion compatible versions/updates and then make a decision to upgrade hardware and software at the same time so your workflow continues with the least disturbance.
Apple prefers to cater to the luxury consumer more than the "Pro" market because the luxury consumer can be leveraged to buy hardware on a faster upgrade cycle. The Pro user is trying to make money and therefore thinks more longterm to extract value out of their purchases.
I know this is a long winded answer, but since your machine is 4 years old and Lion will be slow on it, require opening up the machine to install RAM and replace all your software, you might as well buy a new machine to get the feature you want. If your not prepared to buy a new machine, then forgo it and learn to live without the new feature, your machine could last another 4 years easy and by then there might be no more computers, just all tablets or something, because Apple is ALWAYS changing.
If you take a serious look at Lion, you'll realize it's a transitional OSX version, to what exactly and what form of new hardware it will run on (perhaps even Apple's own processors) is a mystery. So Iv'e decided to stay on 10.6 for all the software choices, printers works just fine to, even on my new 2011 Mac and just wait it out and not thrown several thousand dollars away in a mere 3 years for no reason. When Apple gets to wherever they are going and settles down, the software industry catches up, by then my hardware will likely be ready for a upgrade, if I don't like waht Apple is doing, then I will switch to a alternative. But I won't be lead around on a leash and my wallet abused by Apple any longer, they need to grow up and act like a mature computer products company and quit dropping support for older OS X versions.

The only place that you can get an Apple battery is from Apple.  All of the counterfeiter's will claim that they have an OEM battery for the simple reason so that they can fool you in purchasing from them.
At least from OWC you know exactly what you will be purchasing and they have a one year warranty.  I have purchased two from them, one for my 2006 MBP and one for my 2010 MBP.
    Ciao.

  • Re: Need advice on upgrading from 12.0.4 to 12.1.3 efficiently

    Hi Hussein :
Just some clarification needed. I'm setting up a new EBS r12 instance
Initially, I've already done Upgrading to the Latest OracleAS 10g 10.1.3.x Patch Set in Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 [ID 454811.1].
Then I ran into Upgrading OracleAS 10g Forms and Reports in Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 [ID 437878.1].
    Question is
454811.1 already upgrades Forms Version to the latest 10.1.2.3.0. Do I still have to go through the patches/steps outlined in 437878.1? It (437878.1) does list many more patches than 454811.1. Do I have to install the patches in the second doc (437878.1)?

Doc ID 454811.1 will upgrade OracleAS 10g (10.1.3.x ORACLE_HOME) to the latest patches but not the forms/reports (10.1.2.x ORACLE_HOME) and you still need to follow the steps in 437878.1 to have the latest forms/reports (Developer 10g) patchset applied.

  • Need advice re upgrading from Tiger

I'm about to move to Leopard on my main production platform. Here are some (possibly dumb) questions:
    1. Is there any way to end up with a Tiger/Leopard platform which uses the same user directories? Ideally, I'd like to be able to move between OSen and have the same user data available.
    2. The machine has 4 internal drives. I plan to use Bootcamp and install Vista dedicating one of these (250 GB) drives to Vista. Sugestions? Cautions?
    3. The most important production applications I use are CS3 and FCS 3. What do I need to worry about?
    4. Anything else?
    Thanks!!!
    -Jeff

Some answers that may inspire further questions.
Item number 1. You CAN use the same user directories. In the Leopard User Accounts pref pane, ctrl click on a user name in the user name list to the left and you will get a menu offering "Advanced...". In the Advanced config, you can tell Leopard that the path for a users home directory is somewhere else. Just navigate to your existing User account and choose it. BIG CAUTION!!! This will cause a lot of grief if the user's UID are different between the two systems. UIDs are typically assigned in order, so you would need to create the users accounts in the exact same order in order to make this work. Otherwise, when changing OSs, you might find that you no longer own your own files under one or the other OS. I believe the best way to assure this comes out right would be to do an Archive and Install migrating user accounts. That should keep both OS version connected to the same accounts. This requires you to have enough room on a single disk for Tiger, Leopard and all your accounts.
Caution number two. Leopard will end up updating library pref files and setting for your apps to a Leopard format. If you switch OSs, Tiger may not be too happy with an occasional change. Be prepared for a little bit of weirdness if you keep going back and forth and expect to fully run each version.
Item number 2. Should work. I would make sure to disable Spotlight indexing on the boot camp drive. Also make sure Time Machine excludes that drive. It was defaulted to excluded for me, but your mileage may vary.
Item number 3, Sorry no experience there.

i have a mac and am thinking about upgrading from snowlepard to lion , is it a good idea and hard to adapt to

This is my "About This Mac" ... it shows I have Intel i7 CPU.  If you are running SL, you at least have Intel, but would need at least Core2Duo an 2 GB (most people suggest 4 GB) RAM.
If you want to run Lion, remember that the discussions in this forum from last summer when Lion first came out (and since) were highly charged at times.  Certain features that vanished or were added caused great heartache for some.  Others love Lion, though.  And some live with the changes waiting for any fixes they would desire.
Any PPC (PowerPC) applications you depend upon will not work under Lion.  Use this page to see what applications will not run:  http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
    AND
Recall that you can clone your SL to an external disk to keep it safe.  Then you can "experiment with" the new OSX (Lion or ML) until you know it works for you while still having your old SL safe in case you need it.
    Good luck.

  • Is there a step by step guide on upgrading from leopard to lion inlcuding data backup and migration?

is there a step by step guide on upgrading from leopard to lion inlcuding data backup and migration?

Let me just give you the breakdown:
Snow Leopard (10.6) needs to be purchased. You need Snow Leopard because it has the Mac App StoreAlternatively, you could get the Lion USB drive, but much more expensive
Once you have installed Snow Leopard, open the Mac App Store and find OS X Lion. This downloads OS X Lion Installer. After the download finishes, click on it, follow the steps and the installation begins!
No data will be lost during any of the upgrades
Let me know if you have any further questions.

  • I upgraded from leopard to lion and my epson printer will not work. I get a communication error

I upgraded from leopard to lion and my Epson printer will not work. I get a error message comunication error. What can Ido to fix this I bought a new USB cord and it did no good.

I suddenly had the same thing happen. I've had my new iMac for 3 months and at first my Epson Artisan 50 worked okay then yesterday I started getting the same error message other people on this support site have gotten. I tried ALL the advice given (deleating the Epson files from the library folder, etc. reinstalling older software) and nothing worked. With the newest iMac (and operating system) you cannot pick and choose which version of Epson software you want. You must use the 10.8 version or it simply will not open when you've downloaded it. Finally I found the comment above by den.thed and tried the OS X Mountain Lion: Reset the printing system suggested. As much as I hated to lose all my printing presets that took a lot of expiermentation to set up, I was desperate. I tried it and it worked. Now I just have to consult my old computer and try to recreate all my printing set ups.  So to others with Epson / Apple 10.8 issues this may help when everything else fails. Thanks den.thed for your advice.

  • When upgrading from OS X lion to OS X mountain lion will it automatically uninstall OS X lion

when upgrading from OS X lion to OS X mountain lion will it automatically uninstall OS X lion?

Yes. You download Mountain Lion from the App Store and, once the download is complete, the installation of Mountain Lion will begin. You can quit it at this point and backup the "Install OS Mountain Lion.app" (which I suggest) the double-click it and begin the installation.
All remnants of Lion will be gone and you'll be running Mountain Lion.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

Hello fuchs (guess), If you cancelled while downloading the 4GB Lion, no problem, download again. Snow Leopard should run (start holding the option key).
If you cancelled during the install process, I do not know. In this case you could try to start with the CMD + R keys pressed, and choose the restore, which may work if the creation of the restore partition of Lion has finished.
If that does not work, reinstall Snow Leopard with the CD (start holding the C key), after that download the Combo Update 10.6.8 to update the Snow Leopard completely, then redownload Lion (App Store, click "purchases" while holding the Option Key, find Lion, click "install"). If you want to have your own copy of the Lion installer, you have to copy the installer to a Memory stick or burn to DVD before you install, see else where.

  • Re: Yoga 2 Pro - upgrade from 8.1 to 8.1 pro

A little off topic, but hope you guys can help.
Seems our Yogas are pre-installed with Win 8.1. I need 8.1 pro for powershell and hyper-v.
If I tell it to upgrade, it asks me for £99.99.
So the price to upgrade from 8.1 to 8.1 pro is £100, but to upgrade to 8.1 pro from any other operating system (XP, VIsta or win 7 basic, pro, enterprise, whatever) is £45.
    This is rediculous.
The only way I can see to do it is to wipe the computer, intall XP using an old key I have kicking about, then buy a 8.1 pro upgrade.
    Anyone got any other ideas?

Hi. I was able to enter my the 8.1 key I got from DreamSpark into my Y2P and it accepted it.

  • After upgrading from acrobat 9.5 to XI pro my users have complained on slow typing when filling in form that were created in version 9.5?

After upgrading from acrobat 9.5 to XI pro my users have complained on slow typing when filling in form that were created in version 9.5?
The issue is they type but there is 2 second delay when it appears in the field.
    Windows 7 64bit

I see, I misread your reference to Reader 11 to mean you were using Acrobat 11, but it looks like it worked out anyway.
The base-14 fonts are special in PDF because they are guaranteed to be available even if they are not embedded. If you select a non-base-14 font for use with a form field, the entire font usually gets embedded, since each glyph it contains has to be available for use with the field. This can take up a lot of space if you do this a lot, and the space isn't reduced if you change back to a base-14 font later because the internal reference to it is not removed. This is caused by the bug I mentioned.
In your case, however, the entire font doesn't get embedded because fonts like it (e.g., large asian fonts with a lot of glyphs, Arial Unicode) would take up too much space if fully embedded. If it did, a 100KB PDF could bloat to 20MB with that one change. Instead, users are expected to have such fonts installed on their system, which is why you were prompted to install the font pack. This despite the fact that the font was not actually used by anything in your document, it was simply the orphaned reference to it that triggered this. This should get fixed in Acrobat eventually so this type of thing doesn't happen again.

You can write to Apple with the serial number and they can tell you exactly when your MacPro (as opposed to Mac Book Pro) was manufactured.
And in the Apple menu > about this Mac >  more info > there should be sufficient detail to narrow it down.
