Need advice on which direction I should go

I will be getting a broadband connection to my house soon. I want to establish a web identity including an email server. I purchased a used 1 GHz tower to use as a web server. The software on this machine is OS 10.2 Server. My question is would it be better, or easier, or both to use the installed server software or just install new client 10.4 software and use a third party email server.
Thanks
Mark

While some of the server features in 10.2 were fine, mail services were definitely not a strong point. I would take your second option and choose a 3rd party email server. A specific recommendation would depend on the proposed number of deomains, number of users and throughput.
To take care of you web domain I would install webmin from www.webmin.com to configure apache properly on 10.4.

  • Not sure which direction I should be heading

I'm going to drop a lot of money on equipment sometime during the next six months, and I'm really not sure which direction I should take this. As I see it I could either go with everything hardware, or I could go with Mainstage. Basically, what I want is to get the sound of me and my keyboardist up to snuff, as it's currently not that great.
What I'm thinking of getting for now:
    Hardware route:
    Nord Electro 73
    a magically great guitarfx
    Software route:
    Mainstage
    M-Audio Profire 2626
    Midi foot controller
    Macbook Pro 3,06GHz 4GB RAM
As you can see, the Mainstage route will be more expensive. At the same time it will offer more flexibility, and the ability for more bandmates to join in in the future.
Keyboardist will use the following sounds:
    - Piano
    - Rhodes w/ effects
    - B3
    - Clavinet
    - Solina
    - Strings
    - (Maybe some C64 SID-sounds)
I guess that's it for now.
    Guitarist (me) will use:
    - Overdrive
    - Amp simulator
    - Delay (I know this takes a lot of processing power, so only one or two delay-fx simultaneously.)
    - Other, typical guitar-fx.
If I go hardware I'll go with a multi-fx, but I have yet to find any that will let me tap the tempo on one patch and then keep that tempo when I go to the next patch, so they get kind of limited.
We will both be playing at the same time, and latency is important. I want to use it at 16bit/44,1KHz, as I guess that's the lowest I can go. I want to be able to play with 32 sample buffer. At 64 samples the latency gets too long. I guess I could get used to it, but the day I try to run my bassist or other guitarist og lead vocals or backing vocals through Mainstage I don't want to have to excuse the latency.
Is it stable enough? I plan on using the computer as a Mainstage-only laptop, not installing anything except Mainstage and maybe a few plugins. It'll normally not be connected to the internet, with Airport turned off.
There's probably a lot of stuff I've forgot to mention, that I might think of later, but the main question is; which route would you go in my situation? Hardware or software?

Stability will be risky on mainstage. Some people have no problems, other have lots of cpu issues.
I've been running one keyboardist and a backingtrack loaded into exs24 and have had one problem during a show that required a reboot.
EXS24 stopped playing a backing track twice as well - which was pretty major.
I'll be using playback for backing tracks and will not be sending my guitar through the computer. We will also have a drummer playing now, so if the computer breaks, we'll lose keyboards and will be able to continue on and end a song.
I think it's an acceptable risk for the flexibility and cost savings - since I already had a laptop and all the midi gear. And I try to accept a bit of glitchyness as it's a new program. Hopefully that will be changing over the next few months - as this latest version seems more stable and updates should add to that.
If I were a major act playing large shows, *I would not be using it*. And if it continues to cause problems, we'll be looking for something else.
I used the logic environment for our last band. We had three keyboards for three separate people - that worked pretty much flawlessly.

  • Need advice in which route to take with Vista install a

I have been scouring the forums gathering all sorts of do's and don'ts, but still would like some advice.
I have an iMac (early 2006) w/ 1.5GB ram running Tiger 10.4.11 (never downloaded beta BC) and a MacBook 2.16GHz w/ 1GB ram running Leopard 10.5.2. I recently bought Vista Home Premium OEM - my options are VMFusion on iMac or Bootcamp on laptop? I am a little hesitant because of the OEM version, which I did not pay attention to when I bought it at a computer show. It is 32-bit, thank god. I know the ram is weak on the MacBook but planning to upgrade to 2 soon. My main reason for Windows is for a few programs, no gaming. I wish I would of payed more attention to the fact it was OEM, now if one install goes to the toilet and need to reinstall on another computer..I will be on the phone w/ Microsoft till I am 90!
Thanks in advance for any advice!
    Andrea

I took the plunge and used Bootcamp on my MB because Intuit does not support their products using VM's and the primary reason I wanted Windows was for Quicken 2008. The installation went flawlessly and I am up and running with Vista and no phone calls to India..pheww!

  • I need advice on which processor to get in a new Retina MacBook Pro.

I'm getting ready to order a MacBook Pro with Retina Display for college, I'll be studying film and the courses at my school predominantly use Final Cut Pro X for editing. Because I'll be running FCP quite often, I was hoping someone could answer a question I had about the configuration of my computer. I have everything figured out except for the processor (256GB HD, 16GB RAM), obviously any money I can save while still getting a computer that will perform the way I need it to is great, so I wanted to know if there would be a significant difference between the 2.4GHz i5 and the 2.6GHz. I know it's a relatively small charge for the upgrade but I'm looking to save money wherever I can. Any advice on the issue is greatly appreciated.

Fiscal constraints often have to be taken into account and I certainly understand your situation.  May I suggest that you look in the refurbished section of the Apple online store.  There is a significant price reduction on the various models. They come with the same warranty and telephone support as a 'new' none and can be returned for a full refund in the first 14 days.  I have done this three times with great satisfaction and I have never seen any cosmetic flaws in any of the units.
    Ciao.

  • Need advice on which version to update with!

    Hello!
Hoping for some good advice here! I've been running 10.5.3 for last 20 months, and it's been very stable etc... anyway, I now have to update to 10.5.5 or later in order to run some new software (RED plugin for FCP to be exact). Please could someone tell me which is considered to be the most reliable version of Leopard to update to?!
    Many thanks in advance...!
    Caroline

Given several updates and a few Combo (or combined) updates have been issued
since the early Leopard introduction versions, you may have to consider making
a backup clone of your earlier system on a bootable volume, and then proceed to
update using the latest 10.5.8 - or whatever the level - Combo update. Then get
the Security Updates, any Java updates, Flash & Shockwave player updates, &
QuickTime (and if using QT with Pro key, prepare to buy the update to Pro) plus
any other items to bring the Leopard system fully up to date.
Then, if your software does not work, you may consider newer versions or updates
available for your present software (third party) that may have been available to
the later users of Leopard. A few manufacturers of software do provide updates to
their retail products that do not necessarily cost. Though some offer retail upgrades.
    Some issues in Leopard builds can relate to a previous Tiger system upgrade path;
where an upgrade via Archive and Install may have carried issues forward. An all
new installation from scratch on a wiped (zero-overwritten/reformatted) hard drive
can help in some cases. There are a variety of reasons why, in some cases, there
could be an issue with some build update of Leopard 10.5; depends on configuration.
Even if I don't know what I'm talking about...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Need advice on which licensing to buy

I work in PC tech support by day, and have supported a friend's small business on and off for the last few years.
I am tasked with upgrading an aging Win 2000 server and am thoroughly confused by Microsoft's new terminology for their services and licensing for Windows Server 2012.
Here's what currently exists on site:
2 MS DOS PCs (before you ask - specialty manufacturing equipment)
4 XP PCs (also manufacturing equipment)
    4 windows 7 clients
Windows 2000 server which is central repository of programming files for the manufacturing equipment
5-10 users (employees, including myself for maintenance tasks)
    What I'm adding:
New Server with windows 2012 server.
5 Thin Clients for Adobe Reader, MS Office applications only.
I understand now that RDS is more or less like Citirx, and not a licensing mechanism that controls RDP sessions, which I initially thought.  I need to know the minimum (cheapest) amount of licensing required for the above scenario.  I had originally
spec'd out Server 2012 standard with 10 User CALs, but now I'm seeing that if I want to configure the thin clients in a way where all they have is special access then I need RDS CALs as well.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Yeah, you need RDS CAL (User or Device) as per your requirement with standard CAL. A Windows Remote Desktop Services client access license (CAL) is required for each device or user accessing Windows Remote Desktop Services.
But please remember that when you purchase RDS CAL for your user, before that you have RD License Server install and activated and after that only you can install RDS CAL to it. In your scenario you can buy the required number of User CAL and can meet your
    needs.
But also see that you have updated version of RDP client on client system. (Win XP to RDP 7.0 and Win 7 to RDP 8.1).
For more information on Licensing, please check below article.
An Introduction to Microsoft Server and Client Licensing
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

Essentially, I will be collecting a varaible number
of longs. Te fixed length of arrays makes it seem
inefficient and I am not sure what collection
method/object I should be using otherwise. Please
advise. Thank you.You can use an ArrayList of Long.
An ArrayList basically is a dynamic array implementation so it will grow in size as you add the Longs.
Not that I write Long instaed of long. Long is the wrapper class of the long primitive. ArrayLists can only store objects so if you add longs they will be converted to Long objects instead. This is a drawback but it may not be a problem for you?
One possible strategy is to first collect the Longs in an ArrayList and then when you know the actual umber of longs create a static long array of that size.

  • I need advice on which Adobe product to buy?!

    Hi,
I have been given the task of creating flyers promoting our European Road Freight services.  I am looking for the best programme to support this task.
Essentially, what I am after is cropped images of European Countries, ie flag maps which I can super impose on a European map background, etc.
Any kind advise, hints and tips would be super, thanks!

If you are on a budget, only buy what you can afford.  You may want the larger screen to see the photos better.  Also, the 15" comes with the option of a glossy screen, a high-resolution glossy screen or a high resolution anti-glare screen.  The 13" only comes in glossy.

  • Newbe needs advice on which product to use

Hi, Im completely new to java and looking for a good package for a newbe to use, Id prefer a GUI but any advice will be appreciated. I know its a bit like asking what the best car to drive, they all get you from A to B, but Id like to get from A to B with ease :-)
    Cheers

A lot of people here recommend exactly that for beginners (Notepad plus Command Prompt). Developing code that way is slow but you learn what a classpath is and how to put your source code into directories organized the right way.
There are a lot of IDEs (Interactive Development Environments (I think)) available, but for many of them you'll spend a lot of time learning how to use the tool rather than learning how to program Java. That is a worthwhile investment of time for somebody who is going to be a Java programmer, but not necessarily for a beginner -- you don't know what to do, and you don't even know how to ask what to do.
There are a lot of "What's the best IDE" threads on this forum, you might find some of them if the search feature has been fixed up for the Year of the Rooster, but most of the regulars are starting to find them tiresome.

  • Difference Between Book on sap press and Advice on which book I should take ?

    Hello,
Could someone explain me the difference between those two Sap Press.
SAP CRM Web Client Customizing and Development

SAP Web Client: A Comprehensive Guide for Developers

I thought that web client were only in SAP CRM ?
I have only done ECC and CRM.
did the SAP Web Client include the SAP CRM web Client ?
As I wiork on SAP CRM, I suppose that the "SAP CRM Web Client Customizing and Development" would be the better choice.
    Best Regards.
    Abdou BOURAKBA

"SAP CRM Web Client Customizing and Development" is an older release is more focused on the functional/technical customizing of the Web Client and "SAP Web Client: A Comprehensive Guide for Developers" if purely focused on development. I purchased both and I think are very complementary.
I thought that web client were only in SAP CRM ?
From ECC ehp4 (I belive) WebClient was shipped as part of the Netweaver solution.
did the SAP Web Client include the SAP CRM web Client ?
Are the same, when SAP decided to include Web Client as part of the Netweaver solution, they changed the name because the Web Client is no longer CRM specific.
    Cheers!

  • RFC and Webservice which one i should use and why?

    Hi,
I have to write a extractor program in BI which would be fetching a huge data from CRM.
I have two options to achieve this targer.
1-> Create a RFC which will give me all the data
2-> Create a Webservice in CRM and use it in BI
Please advice me , which way i should go and advantage of that way.
    Regards
    PG

    Hi,
If amount of data is huge then it is recomnded to use RFC because of its speed and reliability. Webservice not yet proven good for extracting and handling very large chunk of data.

  • Which IPad model should I get?

    Hi,
I am considering buying an IPad for school and I don't know what to get. I need help choosing which one I should get.
I have concerns for these things:
~ 3g or Wifi only? I have no Internet at home and no other sources for Internet. I currently go to a family members house to use Wifi.
~ IPad or IPad 2? I do not know which one is better. I am currently leaning towards the IPad 2, but I would like a second opinion.
~ 16gb, 32gb, or 64gb? I only put apps, a few TV shows, music, voice memos, and notes currently on my iPod touch (32gb).
~ Where should I get it? Should I buy it over the Internet or in-store? If I buy it from the Internet, I will most likely buy it from the Apple Store.
~ Can you engrave it in a store? Could an IPad be engraved when you buy it from a store and then be shipped to you?

  • I'm desperately needing advice to a common question.  I use Quicken and love it.  But the Mac version is not as great as the PC.   Has anyone installed it by segmenting their Mac with Parallels or Fusion or Boot camp.  If so, which one do you recommend.

I'm desperately needing advice.  New Mac.   Used Quicken on my PC.  Researched all software for Financial programs and Quicken is still the most recommended.   I want to use Quicken on my Mac.  The Mac version is not highly rated so I would need to partition my Mac.   Has anyone done this for their quicken program and if so, which partitioning program did you use - Parallels, Fusion ware or Boot camp?
    Thx

Virtual Box is safe and well developed, it offers similar or identical features to the paid competition, it may be a little less polished but that's all.
Download and try it out, nothing to lose (except time).

Which refurbished iPhone should I buy to work with my refurbished iPad 3 wifi?  Will I need a personal hotspot?

I'm having the same problem.  The iPad has never roamed particularly well between access points, but under IOS6 it doesn't seem to roam at all, it simply sticks with the access point it first connected with.
I don't have a solution for you, unfortunately.

  • Which MacBook Pro should I go for? Which will complete my needs?

I wanted to buy a MacBook Pro for school in September. I was just curious on which model I should go for.
I need to do the following:
    - I need to be able to run accounting software (Simply Accounting).
    - I need to be able to Skype with friends/family.
    - I need to be able to run Adobe Suite CS5+.
    - I would like to create a home studio surrounded around this new computer.
    - I would like something portable and durable. I need to be able to carry this laptop everyday and it's going to be used in an environment that is more or less abusive.
    - I would also like a CD drive (I still find myself using CDs every once in a while).
    - And I would like to get a nice screen, the stock screen is fine on the 13 inch, but I would need the upgrade on the 15 inch.
    So, basically;
Option 1: 15 inch MacBook Pro base (no extras)
Option 2: 13 inch MacBook Pro with an Intel 520 240GB SSD + 8GB RAM
Option 3: Wait until June/July for the next generation of MacBook Pro's.
    Which would you guy do?
    Thanks.

Skip the 13", does not have the audio I/O you will need.  The 15" with as much ram as you can afford.  You can wait, keeping in mind that you will spend time working bugs ou, depending how Apple rearranges the "furnature yet again.  I have a 15" running SnowLeopard as my music production, as I do a lot of live, and it is VERY stable. (can't afford issuses)  I have a 13" Bare bones for doing light duty stuff and I'm to lazy to lug the big 15" bag of cables/adapters... with me.  Best of luck, hope I helped, and did not confuse you too much.   All the Best
