Need advice using different macs together + macpro users: Attention Please!

Hello to all Logic-freaks:-)
I'm new on this forum and have a couple of questions.
For now I'm working on PC with CubaseSX3 mainly and I'm tired of software and hardware issues(worked on G4 3 years ago but finances led me logically to pc...)
As I can't run into buying the new MacPro(wich I want to) I thought getting a MiniMac or new Imac with Logic Express, so I could learn the new soft and MacOSX's working flow, while getting my actual PC-projects done, and then get Logic Pro and bigger machine Mac.
I wonder if:
1.) I have a Imac and then a MacPro, can I use the Imac as a node and the screen of the Imac as a second screen for Logic Pro on the MacPro?
2.) I have a minimac and decide to get an Imac extra instead of a Macpro, could the Imac accept the minimac as a node,or is the node-thing reserved to Macpro's(Or Powermac G5's)
Besides that I have some Windows-only apps and plugins wich I want to keep and if I first buy a "little" mac like mini or Imac I know I could run Bootcamp and link the machine, using pc-vst plugins with the bigger Macpro to have a kind of "cross-OS"-power setup.
BUT, attention to all of you considering buying a Macpro:
I just browsed through this forum for XP on mac and I followed a link, leading to a benchmark of XP running on Macpro(and talking about the future Quad-core also) and XP running on Intel Conroe's(same as Minimac and Imac,if I got it right?): now look at the conclusions and you will see that the Single Conroe Dualcore OUTPERFORMS THE DOUBLE XEON DUALCORE when rendering and encoding/decoding mp3's, wich are the only applications in the benchmark related to audio-processing, and that could be the Fully Buffered Memory in the Xeon's causing latencies(wich I happen to HATE when it's about music making on the computer)....now that brings up some serious doubts in me, wich lead us to the third question:
-Knowing this, I'd like to know from as many Macpro users possible, if they are experiencing latency troubles or any kind of hardware related trouble in using large sessions, with lots of audiotracks and virtual instruments?
Knowing that the tests were performed with Bootcamp, could there be a significant difference under OSX?
Does this mean I'd have to wait some kind of hardware/driver update?
How is the stability with the new Macpros and Logic(or other softs) anyway? Are their lots of crashes due to the freshness of the product?
Here's the link to the benchmark,go through it,and read the conclusions:
http://anandtech.com/mac/showdoc.aspx?i=2832&p=6
Thank you all for your time,I'd really appreciate to get as much input possible, because the computer issues I went through last months were horrible and I hope going to Mac will change this,
Best Regards,
Biggnik

There are several questions there, and several misunderstandings.
Some answers to some of the questions:
- no, you can't use the screen of the iMac as a second screen for the Mac Pro
- yes, you can use almost any recent Mac as a node, but it's best if the nodes are connected with gigabit ethernet. Logic Node (Distributed Audio Processing) has some significant limitations - it's best overall to get a fast computer, and not use Distributed Audio if possible.
Now for the misunderstandings. Do not confuse rendering and encoding/decoding MP3 with 'audio'. It's got little to do with the kind of processing involved in Logic. And don't confuse RAM latency with audio latency. RAM latency has no effect on audio latency.
Latency in a DAW, whether you're referring to monitoring latency recording audio, or latency playing virtual instruments, is almost entirely determined by the size of the audio buffer used. A much smaller component of the latency is the latency of the link to the audio interface (usually Firewire these days), and the inherent latency of the A/D and D/A converters in the audio interface.

Appreciate your support and if possible , how to do this?

If you want to work with Mac OS X, you need one computer per simultaneous user.
What you are describing, " Multiple simultaneous logins to a single computer" is not avialable on a regular Mac of any description, unless you decide to use Unix tools instead of Mac OS X.
Server will happily store files for many, many users and provide them to multiple (up to hundreds) of computers at "near hard Drive" speeds over Gigabit Ethernet. It can make the File Sharing part easy.

  • HT1338 do i need to use the mac book cleaner ?

do i need to use the mac book cleaner ? my computer is working fine i think.
Is it safe and is it required ?

What exactly do you mean by "the mac book cleaner"?
You don't need to use any third party maintenance tools, cache cleaners, etc. if everything is working fine, & you are unlikely to need one to fix most issues anyway.

    Hi Buterem,
I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your MacBook Pro since your recent Yosemite update. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. If you are having intermittent but persistent responsiveness issues with your mouse or trackpad, you may want to try using Activity Monitor to see if these incidents correspond to occupied system resources, especially system memory or CPU. You may find the following article helpful:

  • How to use different xsl's for user first time logon in OAM

    Hi,
We have a requirement to use different stylesheets (xsls) for employees and customers in OAM. How we can configure different XSLs for user first time logon to OAM (i.e for change password and configuring challenge and responses).
Any pointers on this is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance..

XSLs displayed are controlled by the StyleCookie. So if you can set the value of this cookie to be different front customers and employees, they will see different styles.
You can do this in various locations -> from the web server, from the url, custom plugins, etc....

  • Need Advice: New Intel Mac Mini Still In The Box

    Hi!
Okay.. I know... I have several posts going here as I have several issues I am trying to solve rather simultaneously. Thanks for being patient with me.
I have my old 1.25 Ghz PowerPC Mac Mini running 10.4.11 and all was well and happy. Then Security Update 2007-009 happened and all went to ....well... you know and, yes, it was bad! Went to Apple, got it running of sorts as they re-installed the OS, but they used an old version of OS X. (10.4.7. Can you believe that?) This caused other problems. It continues to have all sorts of difficulties, as I have had to get applications to re-recognize that the computer is back up to 10.4.11. Currently, I am struggling with trying to get iTunes to access it's music folders on the external hard drives. Realized that I hadn't even gotten around to figuring out whether or not some of my other applications work, like some of the games and third party, etc.
The thing is I got a new Intel Mac Mini for Christmas and it's still in the box because as I suspected I need to get my old mac perfect again before I can even think about migrating stuff over to the new Mac. But.. here's the thing... it's starting to look pretty much like 2008 will come and go before I can get the old Mac ready enough to take the new Mac out of the box. This really is rather silly!
Now... I can't get the old Mac to see the music and it made me think. I have all of my iTunes music and iPhoto backed up on an external hard drive (I used Apple's "Back-up" software to do it) and in addition to this two complete copies of the iTunes music and iPhoto photos albums on two separate external hard drives. Should I just forget using migration assistant? Can I get my music and my photo albums into the new mac directly from the external hard drives?
Or...can I use "back up" to restore the music and photos into the new Mac?
I am starting to think that the best way to get my new Mac running is not risk it by attaching it to my old Mac. What do you think?
Thank you so much for any advice or experiences you can give. -Charlotte

I know that I am vacillating back and forth as to what to do. Thanks so much for being patient with me. All of your advice is really appreciated and I am at least closing in on deciding on my strategy. Probably will follow your first response advice, especially considering that some of the third party apps may not have updates to handle Leopard quite yet. Anyway... it's a good strategy since everything is on the externals anyway.
    You can say that fine.
Ha ha ha.... yes, I've been messing around with computers since my parents bought our first Apple computer back in 1979. Just like you, I've never had a serious problem with any of the computers and we've had them all, running all sorts of things from the Original Apple and Apple IIc (which my parents still have and it still runs!) to the Commodore and all the Windows permeations and then on to the Macs running Jaguar, Panther and Tiger, probably because we've always been careful with the machines and what we install in them and how we update them. I have always kept my computers on UPS' and un-plug them when storms brew outside. As it is I am still using my eight year old Windows 98 computer, (for games mostly) and it still runs quicker than most peoples windows pcs and it's only a 740 Megahertz.
I haven't had to re-install anything, especially on this lovely little Mac Mini until now and wouldn't have in this situation, had I known more. I had taken the little Mac Mini in for a Procare "Tune-Up," only four days before the big up-date disaster. Not sure what they did to my mac in the tune-up but the guy gave me back the machine assuring me that the computer was perfect with no problems in answer to my asking "were they sure?" Even after the Genius Bar techs at the Apple Store re-installed the OS to fix the big problems it seems that no one ever thought to run verify disk. Had the Genius Bar techs at the time of the tune-up done this, or at least told me to do this, the last security update would not have wrecked so much havoc. It was only after I got the machine back from Apple that second time that I found that the directory had been corrupted when I ran disk verify. Actually it is amazing that I have had this little Mac Mini for so long and so not have had any problems on it that I would be able to go so long without having to know this really pretty important aspect of keeping one's mac in good running shape. I had been running maintenance scripts and permissions verify and repair and thought that was all there was to it. Silly! You know... that really is a testimony of how nice these little machines are.
Anyway... experience is a good teacher and I have learned so much it's actually been great! This stuff is pretty interesting.
    Now... on to Leopard!
Thanks so much and you have a great New Year! -Charlotte

  • HT2513 What version of iCal do I need to use with Mac OS X Snow Leopard?  I upgraded to OS X 10.6.3 and my iCal 3.0.8 won't open.

I just upgraded to Mac OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.3 and now my iCal 3.0.8 won't open at all.  What version do I need to or should I upgrade to and where do I find it?

The version installed with Snow Leopard since iCal is part of OS X. If you are trying to use iCal from a different drive and version of OS X, then it won't work. If the installed version of iCal in Snow Leopard is the wrong version, then there was a problem. Delete the wrong version then reinstall Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Help! Plug-In SLL_PI 720_46C needed to use GTS 72 together with R/3 4.6C?

    Hi together,
maybe anybody can help me with my question:
We want to use GTS 7.2 together with ERP 4.6C. Do I have to install additionally the plug-in SLL_PI720_46C in my feeder system? Or is it ok if I have only the standard plug-in PI2004_1_46C, SP14 installed? Do I need both?
Thanks very much for your help and answers.
    Cheers,
    Andreas

    Andreas,
I believe in your case it would be sufficient to install the GTS7.2 plug-in.  SAP changed its plug-in strategy for GTS 7.2 and went from the plug-in that comes pre-installed with ECC 6.0 to a separate GTS plug in for 7.2.
I also have used GTS 7.2 with the "old" plug-in which you're referring to.  This will work for the basic Compliance and Customs functionality but I am guessing that you would run into issues when trying to use functionality that is new in GTS 7.2.

  • Newbie needs advice using files from Canon 5D Mk2

I'm getting a bit confused when it comes to codecs and frame rates etc and am hoping somebody can steer me in the right direction.
I'm based in the UK and have my camera set up to shoot at 24 frames per sec. I've read that before bringing the .MOV file into FCE it's best to convert it first using MPEG Streamclip.
Ok so I have my .MOV file loaded up but my first problem is I'm unsure what output settings I should now be considering. I assume it should be the Apple Intermediate Codec but then do I need to enter '24' into the frame rate box to match what I have set in the camera? I'm also unsure which frame size I should be choosing... eg; 1920x1080 (16:9), 1920x1080 (HDTV 1080i) etc.
And then once I have my exported file I'm unclear what the sequence settings should be in FCE.
Looking through the 'Load Sequence Preset' should I be choosing Apple Intermediate Code 1920x1080i50 or i60 or something else altogether?
    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Tom, but what's the difference in FCE sequence settings between choosing Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i50 and 1920x1080i60? Any idea which I should be using? If any?

  • Need advice on what Mac Pro to purchase/how much ram

Hi.. this is my first post...
I have been a Logic user for--15 years??-- and love the program. I have been using only pcs and now have to switch to Mac because, well..... we all know why....
    Here's my question....
With a certain amount of cash to spend ( using Logic pro/ express ), and a lot of audio samples to crunch, am I better off::::
1.---buying the more expensive 3.0 ghz Mac pro with, say, 3 gigs of ram or,
2.---buying the cheaper 2.7 ghz Mac pro and use the savings to load up with more ram memory?
I lean towards the #2 just because 'they' say more ram is good. Up to now all my pc's were just stock and they ran, more or less, fine with few problems. Mind you, I was using midi exclusively..no audio files at all.
I will be recording only one live instrument ( a flugelhorn---brass instrument ) so that's about it!!
    Any guidance would be appreciated..
    Thanks all

Well, the old computer saying goes, "buy the fastest computer you can afford, at that time"... or something like that...
That being said, a new 2.7 Mac Pro ain't a shabby beast, by anyones standards.
3 gigs of RAM is pretty good... for now. But in anticipation of the new OS Leopard, and the inevitable rewriting of Logic that will take place (or is currently in progress), to allow it to access more than 4 gigs of RAM... more RAM wouldn't hurt either. You'd be putting yourself in a position to be able to take advantage of those advancements, when they occur.
So, my 2 cents is with you... a 2.7 Mac Pro with more RAM (maybe 6 to 8 gigs worth...? ) looks quite nice.

Hello!  I'm throwing $4,000 down on a new iMac to use for video editing and various other design purposes.  I'm maxing it out with a 3.75ghz quad core intel i7, 32 gigs of ram, 4 gigs of video ram and a 1t sold state hard drive.  With being a creative cloud subscriber  and updates being rolled out constantly, as a video editor do you think i'll get at least 5-7 years out of this mac.  I also do 3d animates with after effects and cinema 4d.  Thanks!  Any advice and feedback is greatly appreciated.

I made last updates to PC configuration (updates - bold) and soon going to buy. So... maybe final check:

  • Need advice- using migration assistant in first 10.5.2 setup or not?

So, I just bought the newest MacBook Pro and sold my Powerbook G4 12-inch, before selling it I, of course made a clon of it's HDD with an external FireWire Iomega HDD with Carbon Copy Cloner (Superduper! gave me an error when creating the backup but CCC never did). So my question for all of you expirienced migrators from PowerPcs to Intel (going from tiger to leopard too) is that should I use the migration assitant (choosing the option to migrate from another mac in intial setup) or just start from 0 (a big pain u know where) and drap and drop my iTunes folder, assuming it would be recongized well with iTunes in that machine, from my clone and not to drag and drop apps but reinstall them? I heared that dragging and dropping doesn't work good for apps cause both of the arquitectures doesn't install them the same way. I of course will also drag and drop my documents folder and my iPhoto library..
So, please, really, what is the best option?
    Thanks in advance guys, peace!

I am not sure about Migration Assistant. Only going by what I read somewhere, that you can select what you want to migrate, with some limitations.
Don't confuse Migration Assistant with Transfer Assistant, which does move everything.
I used Transfer Assistant when I got my new MBP. Put the old one in Target mode and waited.
It worked, but both were running Tiger.
Someone else might have direct experience with Migration Asst. and give you more details.
On my G5, I installed Leopard on an empty drive and used MA. It worked but some apps came with warnings and they didn't work.
I just opened MA and it says you can migrate

So I guests that answers your question.
