Need advice with upgrading to a new HD

Hello, all.
My available hardware:
MBP 13-inch w/160GB HD running OS X Lion
500GB external firewire HD which I exclusively use for Time Machine
8GB USB flash drive
500GB internal 2.5-inch HD which I intend to install in the MBP
USB 2.5-inch HD enclosure
I'm a relatively new mac user and need some help with migrating to a new hard drive.
I've read Lion is a bit different from the previous OS's as it installs with a recovery partition on the installation HD?  And, just recently, they've added a recovery assistant which allows the user to back up and install this recovery reserve to an external hard drive or USB flash drive with at least 1GB of space.  Assuming this is true, would the following prodecure be the safest and most successful way to upgrade my laptop's HD?
Make sure recovery assistant is installed and if not, install it
Run a Time Machine save/back up on the external HD
Use recovery assistant to create the recovery reserve on the USB flash drive
Remove current HD and install the 500GB one
Insert USB drive, boot, and recover Lion
Connect external HD and use Time Machine to complete restoration of data
I've upgraded hardware and imaged disks for restoral on a number of systems but never on a mac.  Hoping to catch any snags before I run into them.
One last question, would migrating via this method restore the Lion installation the way it was meant to be installed on the HD with the recovery partition present?  I mean, I've read that before the recovery assistant was added, the main methods of installing to a new HD were to either 1) install OS X from scratch, upgrade all the way to Lion, then restore your data or 2) Clone your OS installation and install it to the new HD but this method wouldn't install the recovery reserve which could cause problems down the road.
Thanks, in advance, for any help.

  • Need help with upgrading my OS from 10.5.8

    Need help with upgrading my OS. I havent upgraded the OS since I bought it and have version 10.5.8. Now I cant download Mountain Lion- or even Snow Leopard. When i downloaded the first version of SL- 10.6.1 it says i have to have 10.6 first and I cant find that.

    Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
    Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
    Whilst Apple withdrew Snow Leopard from their stores, you can still get it from Apple by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE (if you are in the USA) and they will supply the SL DVD for $20 for a single user, or $30 for a family pack that covers up to 5 Macs.  You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion from the same number (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
    If you are outside the US call your national Apple Helpline:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
    If you're in the UK, use this number: 0871 508 4400
    When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.
    UPDATE:
    OS 10.6 Snow Leopard is once again available from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
    To use iCloud you have to upgrade all the way to Mountain Lion:

  • Need advice on Upgrading to OSX 10.5 and Adobe CS3

    Hi everyone,
    My wife is a graphic designer she runs her G5 on Tiger. She's been using CS2 for years, she now wants to move to CS3.
    I was wondering if I could have some feedback from you guys using Tiger with CS3.
    In your opinion, is the upgrade to Leopard + CS3 worth it?
    Thanks for your inputs
    D

    Hi, I have CS3 Design Premium, works in both 10.4.11 & 10.5.8 on my G4s & my G5 Quad.
    As far as Tiger vs, Leopard, depends on several things, I prefer Tiger actually, but if you have need of Internet & Security, iPhones, iPad, new Apple KBs or pointing devices, the 10.5 is needed.
    If it's strictly for Design, I'd stick with Tiger.

  • Have old Power Mac G4, need advice on upgrading the operating system

    Hello. Glad I found this forum. Wish it was prominently advertized on the Apple home page. Anyway, I have an old Power Mac G4 running OS X 10.0.4. Well, actually, I've always run it in OS 9.2. In fact recently I started playing with it again and switched it to OS X 10.0.4 and it seems to be unstable. The display dissappears after a while running. The machine is not off, just no display. Hitting the smaller reboot button brings it back up, only to have it repeat the failure. But that's not really my question. I want to use this machine as a Skype phone and for iMovie in OS 9.2. Skype is only available for OS X 10.3.9 and later OS's. So, if it's not a major hassle and expense, I want to upgrade to OS X 10.3.9 or later. That's where I need some advice. Having never attempted such a project, I'd like as much feedback as I can get about what to expect going in. Here are some questions:
    1. Will I still be able to run OS 9.2 (either concurrently or by switching the startup disk when needed) if I upgrade to OS X 10.3.9 or later?
    2. Will this instability with OS X 10.0.4 dissappear if I uprgade?
    3. Where can I find the appropriate upgrade software?
    4. Can I jump from OS X 10.0.4 to a version as late as OS X 10.3.9 without any intermediate steps, and without creating all kinds of little inconsistencies that I will have to chase down to make it work right in day to day use.
    If I get answers to all that, I'll be blown away by the spirit of helpfulness on this forum! But anything you can offer will be greatly appreciated. I don't really want to do anything fancy with the machine, just Skype, hopefully iMovie and maybe stream some TV programs if all goes well. Thanks for reading through all this and for anything you can offer.

    Cornelius, clearly you know your Macs!
    Thank you. I have great mentors, one of whom is Kappy.
    My next question about OS 9 is, if I have to wipe the hard drive, will the Panther retail box I buy include OS 9 or will I need to somehow add it from the original software pack I have after installing Panther?
    You have options.
    1. You can choose to install Panther using the Archive and Install option, which will leave OS 9 untouched. However, since you currently have OS X 10.0.4 on your drive, I think a complete reformat, erase and reinstall is advisable.
    2. You can copy your OS 9 Systems Folder, OS 9 Applications Folder and any data you have have to a USB jump drive, or CD or an external Hard Disk Drive and restore it after Panther or Tiger is installed.
    3. You can install OS 9 from scratch. We will give you step by step directions for doing it.
    I'm assuming I can't use the disks that came with my laptop to updgrade my Power Mac G4, right?
    It may or may not work. However, the Apple Software License Agreement stipulates that unless you have a multiple user license, the OS can only be installed on one computer at a time.
    I'm concerned about OS 9 is because I want to be able to run the OS 9 iMovie that I have on the Power Mac G4 now.
    If you reinstall OS 9, that should be included. OS X also has iMovie, although I am not sure if it is included in the Retail Version. You can also purchase iLife which will include iMovie and other apps.
    What are the potential pitfalls of buying a copy on eBay? What do I need to know to "know what I'm looking for"? What questions should I ask?
    The pitfalls are many. There is fraud on eBay (elsewhere, too, I guess), so you want to be sure you get a reputable seller. You want to be sure that you are getting the Full Retail Version, not computer specific gray disks or upgrade installers. You should ask the seller, in addition, whether you can return the merchandise for a refund if it does not work on your computer. Most reputable sellers want to satisfy their buyers and their business depends on their reputation.
    Kappy said I would need more RAM (I have 384 MB). Where would you recommend buying that?
    Your computer will support a total of 1.5 GB of PC-133 3.3v, unbuffered, 8-byte, non-parity 168-pin SDRAM in 3 slots. You currently have a 128 MB and 256 MB modules in two slots. You can remove one or both and add two or three 512 MB modules. Check out the list of vendors and prices at ramseeker
    Good luck.

  • Need advice on upgrading OS and iPhoto with multiple altered libraries.

    I am going to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard (Bundle Pack) and from iPhoto 6 to iPhoto 8. My wife and I have separate accounts on our MacBook Pro and I have combined our iPhoto Libraries onto an external hard drive using iPhoto Library Manager. Afterwards, I opened the Mac HD icon on my desktop, opened the pictures folder, went through the iPhoto Library folder, and opened the Originals folder. I deleted my photos through here which kept the thumbnail data (when I open iPhoto, I can see all of my photos, I just can't enlarge them beyond a certain size or I get a grayed out image with an exclamation point). I have since done the same for some of my wife's photos to free up space. This has been sort of useful to know what photos we have while not eating up the hard drive.
    How do I install iLife '09 with a clean iPhoto Library? I do not care about seeing thumbnails anymore. However, is it possible to keep the thumbnails on my wife's account? When I open the iPhoto Library on the external HD, will it automatically convert it to the updated version?
    An Apple Tech once told me that altering the iPhoto database like I did can corrupt it and they have since removed that ability in the latest version of iPhoto. I know I screwed it up and am unsure about the best approach once I do upgrade. Any advice is much appreciated.

    Installing iPhoto '09 will work smoothly and seamlessly for operating libraries - I have no idea how it will react to the ones your have corrupted but suspect that it will upgrade them so they will operate in the same crippled way they do now
    To have a fresh library you depress the option key and launch iPhoto and use new library option
    An Apple Tech once told me that altering the iPhoto database like I did can corrupt it
    that is correct as you see when you try to enlarge a photo in the libraries you have modified
    and they have since removed that ability in the latest version of iPhoto.
    not removed but made more difficult so it is less like to happen by mistake - you can still do it in a number of ways but it is not a good idea
    I know I screwed it up and am unsure about the best approach once I do upgrade. Any advice is much appreciated.
    My advice is to use standard operating procedure - backup everything up and do your upgrades (I would do the OS and wait a few days and then do iPhoto myself) - the good library will be updated and work as before - the corrupted libraries may or may not upgrade but i would guess they will and work as before too

    I currently have 8GB ram and the stock video card and an ssd HD 240 GB.

    what Russ said…
    ext.HDD, for simple AVCHD tasks, I would recommend usb3 too…

  • Need help with upgrading my Pavilion's graphics... affordably

    Hi all,
    New member here :-).
    Ok...I am having trouble with a graphics card I just got. It's the EVGA GeForce GT 730 2GB GDDR5 64bit DVI/HDMI/VGA Low Profile Graphics Card 02G-P3-3733-KR. It's a very good entry level card according to every one I've talked to. It was reasonably priced so I bought one. When I installed it all I get is an amber power light and beeping sound. So I contact EVGA to see if it's incompatible with my computer model. This is what they said: "We do apologize for any issues with your GT 730. Your hardware should be sufficient to run the graphics card; however, you will need to remove any ATI/AMD software or drivers prior to installing our NVIDIA based graphics card, as this can cause driver conflicts. Although this graphics card does not require a UEFI motherboard BIOS, you may want to check with HP to see if this system can run 700 series NVIDIA graphics cards." Sooo... based on that last part I underlined, can this computer run that model of card?
    Oh... another note: I guess the card could be defective too. I always seem to get the dud of the bunch if there is one. LOL. If that's the case I'll mail it back to Amazon.
    My official warranty support has run out so you're the only guys and gals that can help me with this. Any info or advice will be greatly appreciated. Or if you can recommend any other graphics card upgrades that would work, that would be awesome too. Thanks so much in advance!!!
    Just in case you didn't see it up top, the make and model is Pavilion P6-2120 H2M53AA#ABA.

    Hi,
    Please post the HP product number for your PC. How to Find the HP Model Number and the HP Product Number or let HP automatically find your PC model number and HP network attached printers. This will allow others to review your issue, make suggestions and review your responses. This is usually the best way to get assistance.
    The quote about removing AMD drivers from EVGA seems to be bogus.  I have multiple EGVA graphics cards and none of the printed directions ever mention removing AMD drivers.  I have run and removed AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards without having to remove the previous drivers.
    If your PC doesn't have a version 8 BIOS then the NVIDIA 7xx graphics cards may not work.

  • Need advice on upgrade from Snowleopard to Lion on MacBk Pro (15" late 2008)

    I want to be able to synch my calendar on new iPhone, home MacBook Pro and office PC (with MS Office)... and I think I have figured out that I need to get Lion on my Mac instead of Snow Leopard.  Are there things I need to do to make this upgrade actually work?  I am a big user, but not so much a smart Mac user... kind of new to it.. advice appreciated.  pitfalls or suggestions... any reasons not to do it?

    Sara MacApple wrote:
    So, do you have any advice about how I can synch my MacBookPro calendar with my iPhone?
    Apple has incorporated features like that into iCloud, then restricted that to only users of 10.7 Lion as  leverage. They won't allow iCloud on 10.6 because people wouldn't upgrade. 10.6 runs a lot of expensive previously purchased software that there isn't a upgrade out yet. If people install Lion anyway on older hardware it slows most machines down and that encourages them to buy a new Mac prematurely. So you see what's going on here.
    Apple changes stuff way too fast, then they quickly burn their bridges and previous users  behind them in the process. For instance, Apple doesn't support 10.5 at all anymore with security and stabilty updates, and that's a mere 4 year old OS X version.
    Not to praise Microsoft, but they do support 10 year old XP still, 5 year old Vista and Windows 7 is going to be supported for at least 10 years or even longer. Windows 8 is going to run Windows 7 software too. So with Windows PC you can run your hardware until it drops dead, buy your software once every 10 years.
    Apple has this crazy notion that we all should be replacing our hardware and expensive software on a 3 year basis. When in reality properly taken care of Mac hardware can last a decade easily, I have a XP friend who's Dell desktop is over 10 years old and still works fine.
    If your a luxury consumer and just use your Mac for the basics,  can keep up with the 3-4 year expensive hardware and software changes, then buy all means buy a new Mac with Lion and get iCloud and then sync to your iPhone. Use the old Mac as backup for software that isn't ready for 10.7 yet.
    If your more a Pro and/or conservative user, perhaps have a heavy investment in software, your machine is working perfectly, have a more longterm objective, then you should consider forgoing the new OS X features until third party software has released Lion compatible versions/updates and then make a decision to upgrade hardware and software at the same time so your workflow continues with the least disturbance.
    Apple prefers to cater to the luxury consumer more than the "Pro" market because the luxury consumer can be leveraged to buy hardware on a faster upgrade cycle. The Pro user is trying to make money and therefore thinks more longterm to extract value out of their purchases.
    I know this is a long winded answer, but since your machine is 4 years old and Lion will be slow on it, require opening up the machine to install RAM and replace all your software, you might as well buy a new machine to get the feature you want. If your not prepared to buy a new machine, then forgo it and learn to live without the new feature, your machine could last another 4 years easy and by then there might be no more computers, just all tablets or something, because Apple is ALWAYS changing.
    If you take a serious look at Lion, you'll realize it's a transitional OSX version, to what exactly and what form of new hardware it will run on (perhaps even Apple's own processors) is a mystery. So Iv'e decided to stay on 10.6 for all the software choices, printers works just fine to, even on my new 2011 Mac and just wait it out and not thrown several thousand dollars away in a mere 3 years for no reason. When Apple gets to wherever they are going and settles down, the software industry catches up, by then my hardware will likely be ready for a upgrade, if I don't like waht Apple is doing, then I will switch to a alternative. But I won't be lead around on a leash and my wallet abused by Apple any longer, they need to grow up and act like a mature computer products company and quit dropping support for older OS X versions.

  • Need advice on upgrading

    I need some advice on updating my 'puter. I have an iMac. Here are my system specs...
    OS 10.2.8
    256 MB Ram
    1 GHz Power PC G4
    Power Mac 6, 1 version=3.3
    DDR SDRAM 256
    I NEED to upgrade. I talked with an apple expert at my local CompUSA a while back and i forgot what he told me I need.
    I obviosouly need to purchase OS X 10.4 (Tiger).
    I also need more memory. I was told to purchase a certain memory card, one for A laptop that will be compaotible with my mac. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a certain memory card.
    I'm also very scared about my music and pictures stored on my computer. If I update, will I lose this and if I will, How do i back up all this data.
    Thank You to anyone who can give me answers.
    Brooke

    Brooke:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    I am not able to identify your computer exactly. Can you tell me if it is 15", 17" or 20". Until we can identify it exactly I can't tell you exactly what RAM modules you need.
    However, you can upgrade your OS to either Panther (10.3x) or Tiger (10.4x) The move from Jaguar to Panther to Tiger is an upgrade which involves purchasing new software disks. You can download updates once you have the basic software installed, but the initial installation is from disks you have to purchase. See Software update, upgrade--what's the difference?.
    To upgrade to Panther or Tiger your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements: for Panther or for Tiger.
    Then you will need to purchase the Full Retail version of Panther or Tiger. Computer specific or upgrade versions should be avoided as they can cause problems. Besides, it is a violation of the Software License Agreement which statesThis License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time...Tiger can be purchased from the Apple Store and Panther (or Tiger on CDs) can be purchased from applerescue.
    In terms of preserving your data you can do an Archive and Install which preserves your data and preferernces in a Previous Systems folder. However, even with Archive and Install it is advisable to backup everything you cannot afford to lose in case something goes wrong. The best way to backup is to purchase an external Firewire Hard Disk Drive and clone your Users Folder to it. More about that later.
    For now, let us identify your computer, then we can tell you what RAM you need. You need to decide whether you want Panther or Tiger. Both are excellent Operating Systems.
    Please post back with the information and any other questions.
    Good luck.

  • Need help with upgrade from Adobe Creative Suite to PS CS4

    My old laptop with Photoshop on it crashed and I ended up purchasing a new laptop.
    I'm trying to reload my PS CS4.  I am using an upgrade from an educational Adobe Creative Suite Premium to the CS4 and when I loaded it on my old laptop I had to get installation help through customer service, but now customer service will not help me since it is CS4.
    When installing the upgrade, it tell me to select the product I already own.  I own the educational full creative suite, but am only upgrading the Photoshop.  I chose Photoshop CS and tried entering the serial number for the suite.  It tells me that the serial number doesn't match the product chosen.  Of course the only products I'm allowed to choose from is Photoshop CS, CS2, or CS3 and not Creative Suite Premium.
    The other serial numbers on this CS is Golive CO and Pagemaker Plug-in.
    I was told there are Adobe customer service reps here on the forum, please tell me what it was I need to do to get my Photoshop installed.
    Thanks

    i wasn't aware that you could get a ps4 at an upgrade price using an older creative suite produect.  i searched online and found this thread (http://forums.adobe.com/thread/476009) which makes it appear that was not a valid upgrade path.
    but, if you're confident that was a valid upgrade path, i'm pretty sure something will need to be done on adobe's end and no amount of manipulation, on your end only, will work.
    your best bet would be to get help in this forum from an adobe staff member like jeff wright who is very knowledgeable and goes out of his way to help adobe customers.  to that end, if i were you, i would start a new thread mentioning his name in your title and in your initial post explaining:
    you have the educational Adobe Creative Suite Premium and purchased a photoshop cs4 upgrade years ago that required adobe support help to install years ago.
    that worked well until a recent computer problem forced you buy a new laptop and you are now trying to reinstall that ps cs4 and again need support help but have been refused help because cs4 is not current.

  • Need advice with support

    I have had problems with my iPhone 4 since about day 3. I get the No Sim Card error over and over all day.
    I have called apple many time and have logged over 12 hours on the phone with support now.
    My First call to apple I got an Advisor and after clearing the phone, reloading, and also loading my phone with no data they wanted me to get the SIM card replaced so I drove to the AT&T Store and had my SIM replaced, I received a No Sim Error the next day.
    I called Apple back.
    My first Senior Advisor was Robert, He told me because I called so late there was nothing he could do that night to get me a phone shipped out. He told me the wait time for a 32 GB phone was around 3 weeks. Robert promised to call me the next day. He also recommended I call the Apple store closest to me to see if they had an iPhone 4 32 GB in stock so I could go get mine replaced. I called them the next morning and asked if they had one in stock and she said yes, then I explained my issue and asked if they would hold that for me while I drove there to get mine exchanged under warranty and she said no, I asked if she could be understanding to my problem and hold it, she said no.
    Robert didn't call me as promised so I called back the next day.
    My 2nd Senior Advisor was Josh, he wanted me to put the phone in recovery mode and restore from a file. I started this process and in the middle my phone re-booted it's self. The restore was not complete and my phone would only boot into recovery mode. He told me to do the recovery again and would call me back the next day to check on the progress.... BTW He never called me back.....
    I called Apple right back and requested a Senior Advisor.
    My 3rd Senior Advisor was Cole, by the time he made it on the phone I had messed with my phone enough to get the OS loaded again. He told me it was too late to ship a phone that day and would call me back the next day. I had to call Cole 3 times to get him on the phone. Once I got him he tried to get me a phone reserved at the closest Apple store "which is a 1 hour and 30 min drive from my house" All they had was parts to try to repair. I told him I wasn't feeling good about driving all that way to have them change parts when no one has been able to tell me why the phone gets this SIM card error and I would prefer a new phone, but the store did not have one. So he set up a shipment.
    Yesterday I received my replacement phone and took it out of the box and went to my computer to restore it. It would not power on. I plugged it in to the computer for 30 min and it still would not power on. I plugged it into my charger and left it for 2 hours, still would not power on. So I tried holding down both buttons to restart, nothing. This charger will charge all of the other iPhones my house just fine. So I call Apple.
    My 4th Senior Advisor, Kaci Went through how to restart the phone and nothing would make this phone power on. Even when you plug it into a computer it is not detected. She tells me she will get this resolved and needs to talk to Customer Relations first because I already have a replacement phone and they already have a $780 hold on my credit card for it. I told her I could put another on there but I would rather them get this fixed because I am tired of the run around. She talks to her supervisor and comes back and said she could not lift the hold on a credit card only customer relations could. She Promises me to call @ 8 am CST because she has to get her and I both on the phone with Customer Relations. Today, I have emailed her once and left 3 messages for her and have not received a call.
    I am lost on who to call. I already called Customer Relations myself after I called to my 3rd Advisor and Candy told me the process work and I would get a phone that worked, I asked her what will they do if the replacement phone is not working correctly and she told me " Getting a 2nd phone that does not work is Virtually Impossible "
    I guess I jinxed myself by asking.....
    Anyone have any advice for me where to go from here? I really want this phone because when it works I really like it but it has to work like my 3g did because I am on call for the Hospital and I cannot miss phone calls.

    OK. Sorry.
    I thought since they aren't having any luck fixing your iDevice over the phone, maybe they could fix it in person or give you another one.
    Good luck.

  • Please help need advice with planned project!

    Hi, im not sure if this is the correct forum to post this (there are so many!) just move it to the correct place if it isnt.
    I need some advice on the correct way of coding a feature that is essential to my dissertation project.
    Basically the project is going to be a particle effect tool that works in a similar way to the particle flow tool works in 3DSMax if anyone has used it, if not here is a screeny:
    http://www.artificial-studios.co.uk/DumpingGround/partview01.png
    It allows you to visually represent your particle system by joining components together and linking them with connecting lines.
    Now my questions is what would be the correct way to implement this in java? I am currently using a series of JSplitPanel's to split the main frame up then using a JPanel for the main area and other JPanels for the individual elements that you can move around and link up, here is a screeny:
    http://www.artificial-studios.co.uk/DumpingGround/partview02.png
    My problem is that when i add a new element via a right click menu I have to call revalidate on the main panel, this causes all the elements to return to their default position. The same thing happens whenever you move one of the JSplitPanes as it called revalidate.
    So im wondering if im doing this the correct way, i see that there are many other kinds of panels provided with SWING and wondering if any of the others are perhaps more suited to my requirements?
    I know that its definitely possible as Poseidon UML was coded entirely in Java and it has many of the features i am looking for:
    http://www.artificial-studios.co.uk/DumpingGround/partview03.png
    As this will be my first large GUI application i wasnt sure where to turn so if anyone can me any advice whatsoever it would be greatly appreciated. Also if anyone can point me to any books or reading material concerning professional GUI design so that i may be able to code applications that look as professional as Poseidon or Netbeans it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Do you know about Data Access Object(dao)?
    Assume you want to add hydrogen molecule to a panel, you create a new object with the class(class Molecule) representing a new molecule( H2, O2 or H2O).
    You can also create a dao for this object of Molecule
    class MoleculeProperty
               private int xLocation, int yLocation, ZLocation;
               public void setYLocation(int tempYLocation)
                           yLocation = tempYLocation;
               public int getYLocation()
                           return yLocation;
               public int getZLocation()
                           return zLocation;
               public void setZLocation(int tempZLocation)
                           zLocation = tempZLocation;
               public void setJustUpdated(boolean tempInput)
                       justUpdated = tempInput;
               public boolean getJustUpdated()
                       return justUpdated;
    Either within your method paintComponent(Graphics g) or your panel for drawing molecules or method paint(Graphics g), it reads MoleculeProperty of Molecule and it can draw it in proper location.
    After you have created a new Molecule, dao.setJustUpdated(true) . At the last line of method paintComponent(Graphics g) or paint(Graphics g), dao.setJustUpdated(false);

  • Need advice in upgrading a sawtooth AGP G4

    Hi, I have a sawtooth AGP G4 computer and I want to upgrade it to a 1ghz CPU (Encore/ST G4 1.0 GHz) with a new graphics card (at least a 128mb card). I know that the Encore/ST G4 1.0 GHz CPU upgrade is really reliable but what would you recommend for a graphics card? I was looking for a ATI Radeon 9200 128mb. Can't seem to find reviews. I'll use this computer to do some graphic design work and some games (WarCraft 3, Simcity 4, Halo1, Age of empire 3) I think these upgrades will work on my machine. Here the current specs :
    Machine Model: PowerMac3,4
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.9)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 467 MHz
    L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 768 MB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.2.8f1
    Serial Number: XB1121UJKXQ
    Sales Order Number: M7627C/A

    Hi everyone,
    I received my graphic's card on thursday and my CPU on friday. I found a ATI 9800 on Ebay for 130$ and I got my CPU upgrade on the sonnet technologies site. I got the 1.8ghz CPU upgrade at 269$.
    Installation was actually pretty easy and straight forward. Booted up my G4 and WOW what a big difference! I did a clean install with OS 10.5. Installed all my working apps (adobe CS3 etc.. ) and did a series of everyday tasks like creating a 25'x25' 300 dpi file and apllied filters to it just to see the differnce. I couldn't beleive my eyes. Did some layout in Illustrator and Quark and it was perfect for my needs.
    I installed WarCraft 3, SimCity 4 rush hour and Age Of Empires 3. Everything was just perfect. I can run them in 1024x768 32 bit with almost all the graphics set to high and no problem as far as I can see. Looked really nice on my 21" viewsonic display.
    I didn't do any bench tests cause I really don't know what software to use or what they all actually mean in detail.
    I'm really quite happy with my newly upgraded G4. Only drawback is with multitasking. Seems like it can do less tasks at once compared to an iMac core duo cause my upgrade only has one CPU. But because this machine is used primarily for work I bring home or games it's not a problem at all.
    Total upgrade price : 430$ includes shipping etc..
    Price of a new iMac :1,299.00 (same kit except it's a core duo 2ghz and I wouldn't know what to do with my 21" screen. I have no place to use it as a second display)
    new G5 tower : 2,899.00 (which would give me the lattitude of adding multiple hard drives)
    I didn't do any research in finding a newer G4 cause I treated my G4 very well still looks new! I would've had to upgrade the graphic's card and such... So I think the best deal was to upgrade with new parts and give it another 5 years or so.
    Hope my post helps you out !
    Thanks for all your help!

  • Need help with upgrading/downgrading info.

    Ok, this is a bit complicated for me, so bare with me as I try to get out the relevant info.
    My girlfriend currently has a LG Ally, due for an upgrade in less than a month.  I have a HTC Rezound I got fairly recently.  As far as data usage, we use very little; as in, usually less than 1gb a month, but are currently on a grandfathered unlimited data family share plan (forgot the phone minutes, but it's the smallest one with unlimited texts).  I have several other phones, including a Droid and a couple of "dumb" phones.
    We recently have been looking to get a tablet.  The thing is, if we have another "smart" device, I'm not seeing the need for having two smart phones.  In fact, a big deterrent for me using my Rezound to it's capacity is I simply like browsing the internet on a larger surface.
    So ultimately, to get the best bang for our buck, I'm wondering if it's possible to give my girlfriend my Rezound and I use a flip phone and a tablet with LTE capability.  Is is possible to upgrade her while downgrading myself?
    Also, there are other possibilities to consider.  I could upgrade her phone, keep my phone and use only wifi on the tablet that I purchase (which, to be honest, I'd rather not be dependent on the phone in that way.)  According to my calculations, it should be approximately the same with the Share Everything Plan.  We could simply switch our phones and buy a tablet separate.
    Ultimately, the end result should be my girlfriend gets an upgrade, I get a tablet, and I don't care what happens to my phone (whether upgrade, downgrade, or neither) as long as I have one.
    What are my possible options?  Things to note:  the Ally is a 3G phone, the Rezound is a 4G with a simcard.

    Ok I will try to cover everything I can...

    Do to the recent changes made this month if you change devices on the account that has the unlimited data plan YOU WILL LOOSE IT unless you buy another smartphone at full price or from another source.
    Also if you switch to a non-smartphone you will loose it also because they use a different data plan and when you activate it you will have to get a data plan supporting the non-smartpone device.
    We recently have been looking to get a tablet.  The thing is, if we have another "smart" device, I'm not seeing the need for having two smart phones.  In fact, a big deterrent for me using my Rezound to it's capacity is I simply like browsing the internet on a larger surface.
    The Tablets are not looked at as a smartphone so Verizon will require you to pay a termination fee to switch from a smartphone to a table but if you add a line this shouldn't effect the account.

    Since you already have the Rezound you can transfer it to your girls account without issues but you still have understand you may loose unlimited data and if you go to a non-smartphone have to change data plan for that device.

    Tablets require a data plan on them so I do not think this will be workable..  You can use it on wifi to keep data use down but a data plan is usually included with the purchase on contract but I am not sure if you buy it at full price.
    Ultimately, the end result should be my girlfriend gets an upgrade, I get a tablet, and I don't care what happens to my phone (whether upgrade, downgrade, or neither) as long as I have one.
    Without know which account has the unlimited plan it is hard to be sure how to do the upgrade without changing your billing on your account.
    What are my possible options?  Things to note:  the Ally is a 3G phone, the Rezound is a 4G with a simcard.
    3G and 4G isn't much of a factor when it comes to billing anymore because of the new data plans put in place.
    With the info supplied I would say it may be wise to consider...
    Use your girls update to get the tablet...
    Transfer Rezound to your girls account to allow her to have the device..
    Activate one of your older Android devices on your account to leave Unlimited Data intact (If your account is the Unlimited One)
