Need advise - best roaming profile setup

Hi all: In an Active Directory - eDir - ZCM environment, what is the best way to implement roaming profiles? We have a mishmash of local GPs delivered via ZCM and a few special GPOs from AD. If you had a clean sheet, how would you implement roaming profiles? Our clients machines are Windows 7 with the Novel and ZCM clients. Servers run OES11 SP2 and our ZCM primary runs 11.3.2 on SLES 11 SP3. branch offices have satellite servers running on OES11 SP2.
Currently I have folder redirection setup for the desktop, start menu and user documents via ZCM user group policies. I wish I could all of this from ZCM, but due to the AD domain I don't think it is possible.
Your suggestions are appreciated. Chris.

  • Can I setup roaming profiles on Windows 7 with a NAS?

I am going to setup Windows 7 (64-Bit) on 2 Desktops & 1 Laptop on my home network.
I have a Central Axis NAS connected. I would like to be able to use roaming profiles on the PC's and have the Home location of the profiles on the NAS. I know the Laptop will have to keep a temporary profile on it until it can reconnect to my network.
I currently have no roaming profiles setup yet on any PC.
Has anyone attempted anything like this?

  • Local forest roaming profiles with remote forest users within RDS?

We have been using RDS for some time now. New users get a new profile from (*1)"\\domain_1\netlogon\Default User.v2" when they first logon to a RDS session host. Ones that is done, the profile is becomes roaming profile that is stored on (*2) "\\some_serverx_in_domain_1\profiles$\%username%".
(Note, this last setting can be set in 4 different places. We used a GPO and used the Remote Desktop Services section to set it)
So far, no rocket science. Now...
Recently we've been asked to allow user accounts from another (trusted) forest (domain_2) to our RDS environment. These users are able to logon to our RDS environment but they do not get a fresh profile from our (*1) default profile location. Instead, they
get a default profile from the RDS session host and this new profile does not become roaming so it is not saved to our (*2) location. How can we force the foreign accounts to get a roaming profile within domain_1 without having to change anything outside our
    administrative border?
Note: Their logon servers do not have a "Default User.v2" in their netlogon and their roaming profile settings are set in the AD properties for the user accounts. The roaming profiles they use are pre-2008 and thus unusable for our 2008-R2 RDS environment.
We are not looking for cross-forest roaming profile functionality. We just want foreign accounts to use our roaming profile setup. Please Help!

    Hi,
    Thanks for your post.
Make sure the trusted forest user have permission to access the Default User profile. In addition, ensure the following policy was enabled:
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Group Policy\Allow Cross-Forest User Policy and Roaming User Profiles
Allows User based policy processing, Roaming User Profiles and User Object logon scripts for cross forest interactive logons. This setting affects all user accounts interactively logging on to a computer in a different forest when a Cross Forest or 2-Way
    Forest trust exists.

  • Roaming profiles in Linux

    Hey all,
If you use roaming profiles in windows and your expecting someday
to use them in Linux, you had better speak up.
Novell tells me that there are no plans to create a roaming profile
    setup for NCL.
So if you want this feature post here!
this feature is important even if you don't roam,
if you want your "documents" folder to be stored on the network
without reconfigureing open office and a host of other programs
to use a different location to store things in
then putting your profile in your home directory is a must.
why have a documents folder created with a user if you can't
get to anything in it unless you are logged in to the same pc it was
created on? I know you can use ifolder to sync this folder to your
netstorage location but what if you don't use ifolder.

Well then, honestly said I cannot understand, why Novell thinks that it is sustainable not to
    implement the Romaing Profile feature.
By frequent reading of these forums I know that you are trying to place the linux home
directories on ressources provided by the Novell Linux Client by manupulation of the pam.d
scripts. Since I do not use Novell's linux distribution on my clients, but Gentoo Linux, it was
already a special challenge to put the Novell Client into operation at all. Standing on shaky
ground I abstained from trying something similar as you do. Instead I additionally export a NSS
share on Netware by NFS. However this solution is neither absolute stable nor secure and was
initially meant as temporary solution... Therefore I ran scared reading that Novell called off
    support.
Jokes aside, linux is still in short supply: On one side they preach the linux transfer and on the
other side people coming from linux world are bemused at best after surviving the examination
ordeal. For example the NSS kernel module of the OES SP2 Linux server has a serious bug
preventing the export of NSS shares by NFS without error. Now ask yourself: Does Novell really
think that people are willing to establish a heterogeneous environment not only with the servers,
but also with the clients? Well, I can tell you, it does not make fun.
    Cheers,
    Torsten

  • Turning roaming profiles off

We have roaming profiles setup for users connecting into RD host session servers in our RD Farm.  What happens if roaming profiles are turned off in group policy for users.  Will the profile be copied to the server they log into?  Or will
a new local profile be created next time they log in?

    Hi,
Thank you for your posting in Windows Server Forum.
A roaming user profile is a copy of the local profile that is copied to, and stored on, a server share. This profile is downloaded to each computer a user logs onto on a network. Changes made to a roaming user profile are synchronized with the server copy of
the profile when the user logs off. The advantage of roaming user profiles is that users do not need to create a profile on each computer they use on a network.
Please check below article for more information regarding roaming user profile.

  • Best Practice for Roaming Profiles over Branch Offices

    Hello Everybody,
I was hoping I could gain advice from experienced engineers on an issue me and my team are currently experiencing.
    The issue:
We have a client that has their main office in London and this company has other remote offices over the world, Paris, Milan, Luxembourg etc.. Each remote office has a local DC&file server installed as two separate servers or both roles on the same
server. Everything is central to London, all the main file shares that the company uses is based in London and the terminal server's are based in London too.
We have DFS-R & N set up on the London File servers to replicate the dfs shares over the remote offices which works fine and we don't generally ever have any issues with this and works well when user's in remote offices access file shares from
    London.
However and I didn't set this up but this client also has DFS-R & N set up for roaming profiles!!! The issue we are having here is only with the terminal servers. For example I will log in as one of the users from London on the terminal server and will
load the profile fine, I will log that user off and log in as the admin and remove the profile through advanced system settings. I will then log back on as that same user and will be given a temporary profile, I repeat the first step and the profile loads
fine, so every other log on will load the user with a temporary profile. I know this is the case because for that user, if I change the profile path in AD from
    \\xxxx.com\public to
\\lon-fs3v\profiles$\user it then loads every time with no issues. Before anyone asks I have rebuilt the terminal server(s) to rule out if they were misconfigured. You may ask why not do that for everyone? We can't do that for people based in Milan otherwise
their profile will forever take time to load and that's where the dfs replication comes into play for the profiles.
Unfortunately they are a very stubborn client so some users (important people) have very large profiles which sometimes takes a while to load up.
I have done some reading already on the web and have seen the unsupported scenario from Microsoft regarding this (
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/2533009 )  so unsure the best way to do it. The link I've put in does say you can have issues with the profiles loading (which we do) if there are too many
connections which we have 10 to replicate profiles around the remote offices.
I have done some reading into the hostedbranch cache method but not sure if you can do this with roaming profiles or not?
We generally want to eliminate the issue for users when logging on remotely with getting a temp profile every other log on attempt. I must add though this issue never occurs on the workstations just the terminal server, our client is in the private equity
market so one user may just spend one day in a remote office and then come back to London to carry on as they normally would.
So that's the background to the issue and I was generally trying to work out what methods or if this is possible with the branch cached method for roaming profiles ?
Thank you to anyone who replies.
    Best,
    Liam

    Hi UC3ngineer,
    Agree with Luca.
If the branch users need to do lot of conferencing, the best practice is to deploy an new Front End Pool and an Edge Server in Branch Office; Otherwise you must have a 100%
reliable WAN connection to your central site.
    Best regards,
    Eric

need to be able to setup printing for my Ipad2. How do I find the instructions. THe printer is installed and capable, but I do not see it from either my iPad2 OR iphone 4.  Please advise.

    1. Make sure you've updated the printer firmware and successfully printed the test sheet from the printer.
    2. Make sure that your iPad is on the same network as your printer.
    3. Try printing from an app. To print this page from Safari, for example, go to the rectangle with the right- facing arrow on the toolbar, choose Print from the drop down menu, select your printer, and click Print.
Printing in apps is usually under the rectangle-arrow symbol, but is also sometimes found under the wrench- "tools" symbol.

  • Best solution for data availability for end users --- reverse redirected folder and roaming profile

Roaming profiles and redirected folders do not seem to work for our environment. They often become troublesome and cause much help desk time and resources.
Is there a way to have a roaming profile and redirected folder configuration however have the local workstation have the primary copy and have the "server side" version be a backup?
This would seem to allow the user to have a constantly updated local copy and also have a backed up version on the enterprise server side available.

    Hi,
I'm afraid there is no such function for saving the main copy on local side.
However if the sync of your roaming profile or folder redirection is not working well, it will still affect the result even if the function is available.
Also roaming profile is for "using same profile on different client computers", if the primary copy is on client it will not affect the purpose.
And for folder redirection it supports Offline Files so client should have a local copy when sync is not work.

  • Roaming Profile at User level simply not copying...no error

Little rusty on setting this up but if I recall if I choose to setup roaming profiles at the user object level then I simply need to create a share with the appropriate share/NTFS permissions then assign the UNC path in the Profile tab in ADUC?  We
are running Win 2008 R2 with Win 7 SP1 clients.
If this is correct then I have done this and the profile will simply not roam...no errors in event log, the test user simply logs in and has a normal local profile.  While I am logged in as this user I can access the above UNC and create a folder so
    I think permissions are ok.
Originally this computer and test user were in an OU where I set a GPO setting up Folder Redirection.  Thinking that I possibly configured something incorrectly there I moved the user and computer object to a basic OU where only the default domain policy
    is applied.  No change.
I don't remember getting this part working to be such a hassle so I am at a loss now how to troubleshoot further.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Since Roaming Profile doesn’t work correctly, and you could not find any error in the event logs. At this time, I suggest you’d better first check for the correct permissions on the profile
share. In addition to logging events in the Application Event log, User Profiles can provide a detailed log to aid troubleshooting. To create a detailed log file for user profiles:
    1. Start regedit and locate the following path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
    2. Create a new value called UserEnvDebugLevel as a REG_DWORD, and set the value to 30002 in hexadecimal format.
The log file can be found at: %windir%\debug\usermode\userenv.log

  • Microsoft Word 2010 Hiding/Removing the Navigation Pane for Roaming Profiles

    Hello all,
I am attempting to do what the title says.  We are using Citrix Profile Manager...basically roaming profiles and when updating the Office version to 2010,  users are displayed the Navigation Pane.  If the NavPane is closed,
when they reopen their Citrix session it is back to default displaying the NavPane.  Any help on getting this removed would be greatly appreciated.
I have so far attempted to create a macro Normal.dotm and works partially, however it is not consistent as each time it appears that the modified Normal.dotm becomes overwritten with a default one.  I have also added this modified Normal.dotm to the
Default user profile locally on the server...to which it does not seem to pull.
    Update:
I am currently looking to see on how to redirect the Normal.dotm away from %appdata%\microsoft\templates to a central location and have this applied to all users either user GPO or a per machine setup....but can't find anything specifically for Word 2010
configuration.  Any help on this would also be beneficial.

Regarding the Navigation Pane.  The setting for displaying it is indeed in the Windows Registry but it is part of a binary data key and thus mere mortals like us are not able to change it. You need a macro... see this link for an example.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/bb6268ac-546b-4118-87fa-21f6fd2cecbc/word-navigation-pane-open-by-default
Regarding changing the location of Word's Normal template via GPO it can be done. See below link. However, as is pointed out in the link, the recommendation is not to do so. If the central location server is down, no one will be able to create documents.
In addition, if someone accidentally or purposely alters/corrupts the Normal template... everyone is effected.

  • Windows Domain Controller on Windows Server 2012 R2: Hyper-V roaming profiles not loading due to slow connection

I have racked my brain and done everything that I know to do for about two weeks now.  I am setting up a new system at our fire department and I am having the worst luck with getting the workstations to login to the domain controller with roaming
profiles.  It keeps telling me that the roaming profile could not be loaded because of a slow connection.  These are workstations that are connected directly to the switch that the DC is connected to.  I have tried multiple connections regarding
the layout (DC into the router, router into the switch).  The router is a Cisco RV220W.  I have two VLANS, one for public and one for private domain.  The Private VLAN has DHCP turned off since I am providing it through the DC.  I currently
have a connection from the Private VLAN going to the unmanaged switch that the workstations and server are plugged into.
The server is a Dell PowerEdge R420 that has 6 NIC ports (1 dual port and 1 quad port).  I have a virtual switch setup on Hyper-V for an external port (let's say Card 2 Port 3) that is assigned to the WS 2012R2 Domain Controller.  The DC can see
the internet fine and the workstations can connect to the shared folders on the server.  I can retrieve files by just using the computer name or FQDN.  The DC is also running DNS and DHCP.  The DNS has the _msdcs setup from when I installed
the active directory role.  I have attempted to assign static IP addresses to the workstations:
    IP:                     10.0.0.80
    Subnet:             255.255.255.0
    IPV4 Gateway:  10.0.0.1
    IPV4 DNS:        10.0.0.12
I've attempted "append the specific DNS suffix", I've "registered the connection in DNS", I've used "use this connections suffix in DNS registration".
    The server is assigned:
    IP:                     10.0.0.12
    Subnet:             255.255.255.0
    IPV4 Gateway:  10.0.0.1
    IPV4 DNS:         10.0.0.12
The DNS entries have forwarders that forward to my ISP DNS servers for lookup
I've enabled and disabled DHCP, I've installed a new VM just to create another DC to make sure that I didn't goof up when I created it.
I've lost my patience with this project and am sinking fast.  Can someone please offer some advice as to what I've done wrong?  I've created this exact scenario at work many times but, I've never done it with Windows Server 2012.  Is this
possibly something to do with the Dell PowerEdge server (Generation 12) with the SR-IOV?  I am going to attempt to work on it some more tomorrow when I get over there.  I think there may be an issue with the SR-IOV not being enabled on the machine
through the Dell Bios.  Would the SR-IOV really cause the workstations to report a slow connection?  When I login at the domain controller the roaming profiles and folder redirection work fine so, I know the GPO settings are correct.  I don't
have "ignore slow connections" or any of those GPO's set.  I need to get it working the correct way so, I didn't want to fool the server when there is another underlying problem.  Any help that someone can offer, I am more than willing
to listen.  If you need more information, please ask.
    Thanks,
    Jay

So, I've managed to research this some more since Thursday and I've come to the conclusion that Hyper-V does a horrible job of supporting Qualcomm NIC cards. That's the only thing I can conclude as far as where the issue is originating. I've read many
post and walkthroughs but nothing that has helped. The issue wasn't with any settings in the domain controller. The issue was that there really is a slow connection originating at the domain controller that is a VM and has network connectivity through the
virtual switch from Hyper-V. So, next question is, how do I get the DC to have better connectivity through the NIC that Hyper-V won't give it? If hyper-v would allow passthrough, this would be so much simpler. VM-ware is looking really good at this point.
Im disappointed in MS right now.

  • It is Possible to Migrate Local User Profile to Roaming Profile Using USMT?

    Dear All,
1st, I'm following guide at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/142682 to copy user profiles to another user, but the problem is the 'Copy to' button is not active (grey). I try
using 3rd party tools, still no change.
2nd, I try to transfer local profile on the same machine and different user using Windows Easy Transfer, it's work and all of data has been restore to a new user. But not all App Settings is restored, when I open Outlook 2010 and Windows
Live Mail, there's need to enter password again. That is not problem for me.
3rd, After migrate/transfer (2nd step) I want to migrate from local profile to roaming profile, but user profile setting on local profile is not copied to roaming profile, such as Email setting need to create new account but all data is
not problem, because I have already configure on ADUC and GPMC.
    My question is:
    1. How to copy or move all Application settings on AppData Local folder to roaming profile?
    2. How about USMT, it is possible to migrate user profile settings from local to roaming? if is the best tools, how to do this?
    Please, advice...
    Thanks,
    Hendra

First, I dont understand why you're using the copy profile method. I'll make the assumption that you have a domain user account that you you need it's files and settings moving to another machine.
In that scenario then there's a simple guide here:
    Migrate User Accounts
For Roaming Profiles and Redirected folders; you can follow the
Infrastructure Planning and Design (IPD) Guide for Windows User State Virtualization (USV).
It sounds like a mouthfull but it actually makes the whole process easy. There's also a video
    here.

  • OneDrive Sync Settings with Domain Account Roaming Profile

This question seems to have been asked in various manners online including here at TechNet but it has never actually been answered that I can find.
Home domain using Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, client is Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit with Update 1. Logged in as a domain user account with a Roaming Profile and Folder Redirection connected to a Microsoft Account.
Under PC Settings > OneDrive > Sync Settings, everything is greyed out and disabled. I wasn't too bothered about it previously however with Windows Phone 8.1 out now it means that I cannot use Tab Sync with Internet Explorer 11 on the phone.
I have a GPO which excludes the following folders from the Roaming Profile to both allow Folder Redirection to function and also to allow the OneDrive app to function: "Downloads;Pictures; My Pictures;Music; My Music;Videos; My Videos;Dropbox;SkyDrive;OneDrive"
I am using the Primary Computer attribute with a second GPO which limits profile redirection to the users primary computer.
When logging on to my Primary Computer with the Roaming Profile activated, all of the Sync Settings are disabled but on another machine which is non-primary and therefore my roaming profile does not sync, I can connect my Microsoft Account to the local
profile generated on this machine and all of the Sync Settings are available, clearly linked to the Roaming element of the profile.
Is the non-functionality of Sync Settings on domain accounts with Roaming Profiles by design or by virtue of the fact that things are trying to steer away from Roaming Profiles now? I love the Sync features but in that they don't sync everything (3rd party
Application Settings for example) there is a need for both features to exist in parallel.
There is a new section in Group Policy to limit the use of the Sync Settings features for Enterprises which wish to prevent users from using these features so I don't understand the reason for it to not function at all for anyone.
