Need Affordable Capture Card CS4 Win 7 i5

I work for the government, so some things here are out of my control.
In 2003, I was able to build a machine to capture TV news clips for an archive and to turn some material into web video. We also Firewire in our own material, edit and burn to DVD or upload to the web.
The machine was: Pentium 4, 2 1 GB RAM, two hard drives and a Matrox RX.T 10 video capture card. We ran Premiere 7 on it (I know, but it was free and I work for the government.)
The hard drive on that machine died and I they sent me a new machine, WITHOUT asking what it will be used for. So I am trying to make this work
Intel MB that has one PCI slot, with a i5 Duo Core. 4 gb of RAM and a 300 GB HDD and Win 7.
When I put the Matrox card in it the screen remained blank and it beeped at me.
Question 1: Is there a way to make the Matrox card work? My guess is 'probably not."
Question 2: Any suggestions for a good affordable capture device? My DVR's are Toshiba RDxKX50 machines. I've been capturing from the analogue output, but I'm wondering if there is a way to capture the higher quality HDMI output.
Since I am doing this with tax dollars, I would like to do it for the least amount of money that is possible.

Need Video Capture Card and DVD Burner Quick!

Here's my situation. I've created some movie titles in iMovie and have no way to get them from my Macintosh to my DVD/VCR to incorporate them in a tape I'm making. I need it like NOW as a lot of people are waiting for copies of the tape!
For some time I've wanted a device called a video capture card. It has the ability to play videos on your computer and you can print out images from them. What I want to do is make DVDs of my VHS home movies. I did learn you can't just walk into any local store and buy such a device; it must be ordered.
Desperation is a great motivator and finally (duh) I decided to look at a site specializing in Macintosh products, instead of studying every capture card online. Surprisingly, they offer three models: one cheap ($50-some), one at twice the price of the first, and a third at ten times the price of the second! That's quite a jump! So, as I understand this, I somehow connect this device to my computer (Power Mac G4), hook a VCR to it, and then I can play videotapes on my computer. If I'm in a desperate hurry to burn DVDs I suppose my friend's DVD player will also connect to this device, or am I wrong in this?
Even if I am right (that a DVD player/burner will connect to this) I still don't see how that gives ME a DVD burner with which to transfer my videos to DVD! My combo player will make videos from DVDs but not the other way around! So do I have to run out and buy a DVD burner, and should it be any special kind since it will be used with a device connected to a Macintosh? I need this ASAP so thanks for any advice, or clarification to my understanding of how this process works!

Lennart's links are very good and informative. But one thing you should know is that an external DVD burner will not play a DVD - it only burns them. Since you want to view the DVD and pause at a particular scene and print it, you'll need some way to view your DVD. You also need a way to convert the iMovie project with the imported VHS footage, to a burnable format. iDVD can do that, but I noticed you have OS X 10.2 (Jaguar). If you don't have iDVD you'll need to buy it from the Apple store.

You also need a media player so you can view your final DVD. I did some quick research and found out that none of the free media players allows you to print - which is what you want to do. There are quite a few free media players available, like Nice player and Xine Player, but you need Panther or higher to use them. Because you're running OS X 10.2, the only free media player that you can use is VLC media player. To download a free VLC player go to: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ You do need QT 6.5.2. or higher. So you may need to update your QT.
You can't print a paused image, but you can take a snap shot of the still image, then print that. Snap Shot=CommandShift4. This will allow you to select the paused picture in the screen, or if you like just a portion of that paused picture. It will save on your desktop as a picture. Double click on the Picture, then print that.
Then it sounds like after you've burned the DVD with your titles, you will need to connect a VHS recorder to a DVD player and record your DVD on to VHS tape.

if your board has any 1x PCI-E slots free, you might want to look out for a PCI-E version of this card (not sure if MSI have launched one yet, but other companies have)

i want a suggestion on what capture card to buy i need a capture card for my xbox 360 right now i use a hdmi cord for pictures on it i want a hd capture card perferably hdmi any help? or suggestions

Capture card necessary or recommended?

I've read conflicting advice about capture cards and HDV. One reviewer said he imported HDV footage into FCP 5 using Firwire from camera to Mac, and it was as easy to capture and edit as DV footage. Others say that it's much better to go through a capture card.
I have an antique Mac -- a G5 1.8DP -- and an HDV camera. For now, most of my output will be SD, but I want to archive HDV for future use.
There are still one or two cards made for my computer. Should I consider getting one?

If you want to archive your footage as HDV, then you can capture as HDV... are you using a camera as a deck?
The issue you may find if you start editing in HDV is the lack of grunt in your G5... (what exactly is 1.8DP? do you mean 1.8Ghz?)
The reason why people use the capture card route is because people have cottoned on to the fact that HDV can be captured as DVCPROHD which is a superior format, but much more demanding on your system.
I believe that if you want to stay in the realm of HDV, don't need a capture card.

HDV capture card

I'm looking for a capture card that support HDV camcorders, for G5.
But it seems that doesn't exist any card: I found only HD or SD capture cards.
The only HDV capture card that is able to native editing hdv video in realtime from hdv camcorders is the canopus EDIUS NX (and canopus velxus 300 in Japan); but the problem is that canopus hdv card is only for PC.
I called canopus and they said me that these cards will be for MAC when Apple will release the new powermac intel-based.
So I read in the apple FCP 5 HD page this:

I know that it is not possible capture a video by firewire from a camcorder without further compressing it. I know that it is for this reason that pro use capture cards (that have dedicated processors for this).
So I think that there aren't HDV capture cards for mac because the hardware companies don't make new cards for only few months, so they're waiting the new intel-based macs. If so, this firewire technology of final cut pro 5 is a compromise for these last times, or is it really like the capture-card processing? and if so, how is it possible capturing a hdv video by firewire without further compressing it?
Do you know about a HDV card for MAC or is it really good using Final Cut Pro HD 5 with firewire ?

It all depends on what type of work you are doing...
Capture Cards are for use with other formats that cannot be captured via firewire: BetaSP, Digibeta, HDCAM, D5. They are also require for outputting to these formats.
Not many broadcast facilities will take a DVCAM master...some will, but most won't. And depending on your client, they may or may not take an HDV master. They may want an HDCAM or D5 master if they are producing HD content. For that you need a capture card and high speed drive RAIDS.
Why do other pricier systems come with capture cards? Because they are sold that way. FCP, out of the box, is ready to edit DV, DVCPRO 50, DVCPRO HD and HDV...FULL RESOLUTION...no compression. Any need to do higher end requires a capture card.

I don't understand capture cards - PLEASE HELP

I've seen other posts that dance around this, but what I want to know is ... what exactly does a capture card do and when do you need it? I'm about to edit a feature to be shot on the panasonic hvx200. We will transfer the p2 cards into my G5 each night. From what I understand, Final Cut 5 allows you to transfer the p2 files directly into the project. So, my second question is this: can I edit 1080p footage on my G5 and play back the sequence in full screen on my 23 inch HD monitor and get a true high def image? Or, do I need additional equipment. For your workflow, or the DVCPRO HD workflow for that matter, does not require a capture card. With the P2 cards, you just transfer the footage. If you shot with the Varicam, then you can capture via firewire with the use of a DVCPRO HD deck. No cards needed.
Capture cards are required for footage that cannot be captured via firewire: BetaSP, Digibeta, HDCam, D5, VHS, 3/4".
With your 23" monitor on it's own, you can preview the footage with Digital Cinema Desktop, but that won't be a "true HD image." For a true HD image you will need to either route thru a Panasonic 1200HD deck, or use a capture card (Kona 2, Kona LHe, Decklink HD, Decklink Multibridge) and use an HD SDI>DVI converter box to route to a SECOND 23" monitor for a "close" to true HD image. The only way to get a true HD image is to use an HD monitor.

Tell me to summarize I can be used osprey 100 capture card that converts pal to raw format. the encoded or compressed FMLE 3.1 using (in my case) H.264 and then the flash media server completes streaming.

Does a capture card improve real time functions?

I am reading posts regarding capture cards and i figured for DV material, capture card may not be necessary as firewire is there. but does capture cards improve the effeciency of the machine /CPU , does it render faster and play more real time effects?

The Aurora is a Standard Definition card and the Decklink is an HD card. I don't have them both installed at the same time...I put in what I need. Right now I am working with HD so I have the decklink card in.
AJA I/O is a standard definition "solution." I say solution because it isn't a capture card per se, but rather an external box that captures SD signals (SDI, Component, Composite) and inputs them into FCP via a firewire connection to the computer. This allows it to be used on multiple machines easily. The Kona series are High Def cards that need to be installed in the PCI slots of your computer.
What is my workflow with the DSR-11? Probably the same as you. DV/NTSC Easy Setup, then connect it to the computer via firewire and capture. When I am done, I output back to tape. What else is there to do with this?
Codecs? DV, 8-bit uncompressed SD, DCPRO 50, DVCPRO HD. Depends on the project I am working on and how it was shot.
10-bit uncompressed DV? DV by nature is compressed 5:1 when it is recorded to tape. When you capture that via firewire from your DSR-11 deck, you are capturing it at the highest possible quality. It is simply a file transfer. Now, if you were delivering on DV then you don't need a capture card. But if you were, say, needing to deliver a digibeta master, or betasp, then you'd need a capture card to output to that format...uprezzing the DV footage to 8-bit uncompressed (better color space, beter codec for graphics and stils) and output. 10-bit is overkill for DV.
My workflow depends on the footage I am given and the format I need to master to. My HD workflow differs greatly from my DV workflow, which differs from my SD Uncompressed workflow. To go into detail of each would mean writing an article, and I am too busy editing to do that.

I want to create a JAVA program so I can schedule that the recording with my TV Capture Card begins in x seconds.
Now to start a recording, you must press Ctrl+M and to stop an recording you must click the mouse.
How can I realise that a Java application can "press" Ctrl+M. I have to create an timer, that must be do-able... but I don't know how the program can simulate the pressing of Ctrl+M. I also need to know how the Java program can do a mouse click for me to end the recording.

PCI video capture cards needed for mdd...

Hi guys,
just want to get opions about pci video capture cards out there that can be used on a MDD running either 9.2.2 or X Tiger.
I basically need to transfer old analog Hi8 video to DV format. and the default card doesn't have video in/out.
I don't might purchasing software that may be required... either old or new, or if iMovie is enough just tell me if it is required to support the HD.

Be careful to get a money back guarantee on any Avid Video capture cards. I assisted a wedding videographer who spent seventeen thousand dollars on an elaborate capture and editing system based on NuBus cards for 8100 PPCs and the company never got it to work properly without constant crashing. I am sure that Avid has gone on to produce some quality equipment based on lessons learned in the 1990s but that 8100 generation of cards was worthless.
I am interested in doing the same thing you are looking for so I will post back with what I find. Just avoid being the guinea pig for some company who does not have the details worked out.
