Need airport extreme card (and installation disk?) for OS X 10.2.4

So when I got my emac in 2003 it didn't come with an airport extreme card. but now I need to get online and am unable to hook up with a landline to our current, only wireless, router. I can't upgrade my OS X and spend tons of money for ram and the new card. So I'm looking for the card that would work with my version of OS X. Please give me any info or websites, I haven't had any luck myself!

LaurieP, Welcome to the discussion area!
The version of OS X installed has nothing to do with which card you need.
The original eMacs require the original AirPort card. That is the only card compatible with the internal slot.
Later eMacs require the AirPort Extreme card. That is the only card compatible with the internal slot.
You can determine which eMac you have by using KB 86325, eMac: How to locate the serial number and identify your model. The "eMac (ATI Graphics)", "eMac (USB 2.0)", and "eMac (2005)" all require the AirPort Extreme card.

  • Setting up airport extreme card and airport extreme base station

I have an ibook G4 about 3 years old with osx10.4.10 recently installed. I have recently bought an airport extreme card and have also bought an airport extreme base station.
There seems to be a problem with the set up of the card. It does not seem to find any wireless networks at all, including the base station. The base station seems to be working as I went through setting this up with Apple phone support and we managed to do it by connecting the laptop to the base station with an ethernet cable.
I think the problem is with the card. I think I need to reinstall and set up the card again from scratch, but can't figure out how to do this -aiport utility and airport setup assistant don't seem to help here as they take you straight to the stage of setting up a base station. I seem to remember when I originally installed the card for the very first time (before attempting to set up the base station) that it did find other wireless networks, so I don't think there is a physical problem with the card.
Any suggestions on getting the card working appreciated.
    Many thanks

Hello bblairlondon. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
First, verify if OS X "recognizes" the card, by using the System Profiler utility. Select the AirPort Card option under Network in the column on the left. The "Wireless Card Type" should be "AirPort Extreme (nxnnnn, nxnnnn)."
If no card appears, I suggest that you double-check your AirPort Extreme Card installation by using the following Apple Tech article: iBook G4: CIP Instructions
If the card does appear, then try the following ...
    Reset the PRAM
    o Shut down the computer.
    o Turn on the computer.
o Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
o Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    o Release the keys.

  • Can't Connect to Internet using AirPort Extreme Card and DLink Router

I have tried just about everything, but I can't seem to connect my MAC OS X 10.3.9 to the internet. I am using the Airport Extreme Card and no networks show up. I am trying to connect to my DLink router. I was told by DLink that it is compatible with AirPort Extreme cards, but the guys at Best Buy were unable to connect to their wireless routers, other than their Mac Router. Please let me know if you have a solution! Thanks

Do you have iMac G5 or a Power Mac G5?
Did you install the AirPort Extreme card yourself?

  • Can't get security to work - Airport Extreme card and Netgear router

This apparently is not as simple an issue as I expected, so I would appreciate some help.
I just got dsl and a Netgear WGT624 wireless router to connect my wife's iBook G4 with AirPort Extreme card. I used a wired-in pc to set up the router via the web interface and can connect the iBook to the web wirelessly as long as I have security disabled. When I attempt to set WEP or WPA the connection fails.
Initially, I assumed I just was missing something in the AirPort setup, even after looking through all the documentation I could find. I upgraded yesterday from 10.3.3 to 10.3.9, just to see, but had no improvement.
If I select "WPA-PSK(TKIP)" in the router, it asks for a password, which I also then enter to login to the selected network via Internet Connect. I get "there was an error joining..."
If I select "WEP" with 64 bit and shared key options, use the same password to automatically generate the assorted keys, I am not sure what to enter to login. I have received incorrect password messages or no response at all.
I would appreciate any further direction or suggestions.
    Thanks
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.3)

One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

"WPA Personal" on the Mac corresponds to plain WPA, with a pre-shared key (PSK) and TKIP encryption, on non-Apple wireless routers. The same alphanumeric password should work on both.

  • AirPort Extreme card and Netgear

I hope someone on this group list can help. I've been around the web (MacOSXHints, etc.), and on the phone with Apple (for hours) trying to find a way to link my brand-new iBook G4 to the Wintel office system. They've got a Netgear wireless router (MR814v2) and Windows 2000.
Here's the thing: my iBook G3, with an AirPort card, can pick up the network's broadcast, and I can go surfing the web & connect with our printer over Apple Talk. My G4 with an AirPort Extreme card can recognize the presence of the router, but is unable to surf it's airwaves. I've already tried connecting directly via ethernet cable, and this works - but won't be an option for day-to-day. Per some hints on the web, I've gotten the IT guys to upgrade the netgear's firmware to 5.03, but it STILL doesn't work. Apple says it's a Netgear problem, but the IT guys won't change the router (my D-Link at home works great), and they are loathe to tinker with the settings (esp. because they've set it up to have a dedicated line for electronic billing submissions).
So, has anyone encountered this problem yet? Any good work arounds? Thanks, all.

Thanks for the welcome, Duane. Yes, the network does have an access control list, but the while the router is picking up the MAC number on my G3, it can't seem to see the G4, though the G4 can see it. Is the suggestion that I convince the ITs to manually input my MAC Address? Maybe that's a go, if we can do it manually.

  • Need airport extreme card for sbc yahoo DSL??

    hello,
do I need to buy a aiport extreme card if I get a new iMac G5?? or can I connect to my DSL line automatically?

    Hello Ann:
I connect to SBC/Yahoo through the aforementioned 2Wire router. I bought the router from SBC when I acquired DSL service. I use the router to connect two iMacs to the DSL line (wire connection). Make sure you use the Ethernet port if you get the 2Wire router (it has a USB port as well which I found to be flaky under OS X).
SBC's technical support people were helpful during the initial installation.

  • AirPort Extreme, TimeMachine and external disks

    Hi folks,
Have done some searching on this, but unfortunately haven't been able to answer my question, so over you to kind people to try and help me if at all possible!
I have purchased an AirPort Extreme (802.11n) which works fine. Also purchased a 1TB external hard disk for backup/TimeMachine purposes. If I connect the external USB drive directly to my MacBook, TimeMachine will do its thing without any problem.
However, if I plug the external disk into the AirPort Extreme, although it is visible to the AirPort utility, TimeMachine cannot see the disk at all.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    *AirPort Utility version 7.3.2*
    *Leopard 10.5.6*

Time Machine backups to AirDisks (e.g. USB HDD attached to Extreme) is unsupported, but has been successful by some. As well, once you decide to move your TM backups to an AirDisk, you cannot continue backing up to your previous TM backup. The format it saves to vs. a local HDD is different. The folder structure you see becomes a sparsebundle/disk image via the AirDisk.

But everyones at every store I´ve been keep telling me that a I need a special card for it, because the regular card just won´t fit the slot. Is this true?
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
I need a special card for it, because the regular card just won´t fit the slot. Is this true?
    No.
The "special" airport extreme/bluetooth card is only for dual core Late 2005 G5's. Your 1.8ghz G5 can use the Airport Exteme Card M8881LL/A.

  • Apple Store - Selling Airport Extreme Cards for Mac Pro

I would venture to say that most people are not aware that the "standard" Airport Extreme Cards will not work for the Mac Pro, so I felt it important to let it be known.
This past weekend, I purchased a Mac Pro at an Apple Store in Texas. I picked up an Airport Express Card and asked the associate if it was compatible with the new Mac Pro's. He first thought it was already on the base config, which I knew had to be false. He went and looked it up, and sure enough it wasn't included but he did confirm that that Airport Express Card will in fact work with the Mac Pro.
After driving home nearly 2 hours, I pop the case to find out that the Airport slot is by no means the same; it's much smaller.
I see two problems with this:
    1. They should clearly mark on the box that the Airport Express Card is not compatible with the new Mac Pro (it's on the website description).
    2. The Apple Store Staff should be well aware of this change. Especially, since at the time I purchased the Mac Pro, the NEW Airport cards were not even shipping yet.
Just sharing my frustrations and also informing anybody about to head into a store to make a purchase... heads up.
    Thanks for listening,
    Marc

As you've found out they are NOT the same. In actual fact, as Apple classes them as a service centre only installation you won't be able to buy one from an Apple Store without an installation. They won't sell you a standalone part. Other place will however sell them.
The part number you are after, I believe, is MA688ZM/A.

  • Raid card and scratch disk setup for FCP

    Hi Guys
Can anybody tell me what is the correct way to set up a raid card and scratch disk for FCP if you have 3 x 2TB internal hard drives, with the OS on HD1 and drives 2 and 3 dedicated for FCP
Also with this i also have all my documents i.e work stuff, invoices, pictures, music ect from my old windows PC and used to have them stored on HD2 with the Windows 7 OS on HD1 - i have been told that it is fine if i put this on the same drives as FCP is this correct...?
i only ask this as i have been told how to do it in different ways by 3 people......

Thanks John, although i'm rather embarrassed to admit that I am a complete newbie when it comes to technical/computer hardware terms (i.e. I have no idea about different types of disks, other than a HDD and a SSD, or even what the difference is between your media cache and a scratch disk).
This means that after reading all the links you so helpfully provided hasn't done much other than making me feel even more stupid!
The best that I can conclude from what I think that i've understood is that I will use:
Intel 530 Series 120GB SSD for O/S, Programs (and Pagefile?? No idea what this is, sorry)
Samsung 840BW 500GB - Scratch Disk (is this the media cache?) and preview
Seagate Barracuda 3TB HDD - media, projects, and exports
Please tell me if i've got something around the wrong way....
    Thanks again.

  • Airport Extreme card for Mac Pro has SHORT range???

Hello- I have a Mac Pro with the Wireless AirPort Extreme card and ive noticed that the router (AirPort base station) has to be literally 2 ft from the tower to get a full signal. I did a speed test wirelessly from the other room and got 1.2Mb/s to .5Mb/s vs 18.3Mb/s when I plug the Mac Pro directly to the router. Here is what i found:
Plugged directly to Base Station: ~18Mb/s
AirPort 2 ft away wireless: ~9.5Mb/s
AirPort 6 ft away wireless: ~1.3Mb/s
AirPort in next room wireless: ~.43Mb/s
I've checked the antenna connections and they seem to be fine. There is nothing to break the signal between the computer and the Base Station. (minus the other room test) Any insights or suggestions to resolve the weak signal would be super! Thanks.

Our signal strength appears to be solid, but the connection is really inconsistent and it drops off the network all the time. Wish I hadn't bought the built-in airport and plugged into an extreme instead. Wasted 70 bucks!
It is in the basement, but laptops right next to it work just fine. I'm hoping there are driver updates or something that can fix this.

  • Airport Extreme Card Install

I recently inherited a PowerMac G5 (approx. 5 years old) that does not register having an airport card. After purchasing an airport extreme card and opening the box to install it, I found a card already in the slot that does not look like the card I bought and is bolted in and cannot be removed. Does anyone know what this is and how I can remove it?

    Hi-
I found a card already in the slot that does not look like the card I bought and is bolted in and cannot be removed. Does anyone know what this is and how I can remove it?
From your machine profile (11,2) you have a dual core 2.0 GHz machine which uses a special Airport Extreme/Bluetooth card on a runway card:

Don't remove it unless you have the card from the kit that I linked. You can't use a regular Airport Extreme card.
    This is the card needed:
