Need Apple Brand Cables?
I have a composite cable that I've previously used w/ success to play video from my iPod to my tv. I tried to do the same w/ my iPad and get sound only, no video through the tv. I tried playing a movie I bought from iTunes, a movie in iTunes I got as a digital copy, and a youtube video. What's the deal?
With the 2007 iPhone, Apple made changes to the headphone jack to support an integrated microphone and call select switch (below). That required removing composite video from the headphone jack, which resulted in moving all video output potential solely to the Dock Connector.

You need either of these cables, depending on the connections available on your TV: Component AV Cable or Composite AV Cable.

I have had no luck with getting the component cables to work with my 3GS. They are the Apple branded cables, not some knockoff. I would be angry if I needed to buy the universal dock to get them to work. Per some of the forums I've read, it is not needed. Also, from all the reading I've done on the TV out feature in this forum and others, it appears to be a hit or miss whether it works or not. -

Try connecting your Mac to the Time Capsule with an Ethernet cable to see if that lets AirPort Utility "see" the Time Capsule.

I have a G4 with system 10.4.11 and a 6 pin firewire trying to transfer files to my new iMac system 10.8.3, 9 pin firewire. Apple sold me FireWire 9-6 with a Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter. This will not work, do i need a different cable?

Then it sounds like the FW800 to 400 adapter just gets in the way. You don't have FW800 case? on my MDD G4 I added and used FW800 controller and cases from OWC and Sonnet.

What is the best charging cable for the iPad Air (that is not made by Apple)? I need a long cable (over 6ft or more). yes, but I'm trying to use my iPad to type notes (using pages) and I have the smart case which I use as a stand. I need a cable long enough to fit through the back of my desk and the charging brick for the iPad won't fit behind the desk. I have to put it on the floor and then the apple cables aren't long enough to reach.

Apple Branded Firewire vs. Generic Firewire
If I'm using a generic firewire cable to import video, should I expect the video quality to be noticeably lower than if I imported video using an Apple branded firewire cable? I think Apple is charging around $25-30 for a firewire cable and I picked up a generic one for about $7.
However, I noticed that the video that I watch in iMovie is not nearly as good as when I connect my 3CCD camcorder directly to the TV and watch there. Is it just that iMovie doesn't display my imported video at the best quality OR that I'm paying for using a generic firewire cable???

Although you have a definitive answer from mishmumken on the need to have a studio monitor for final review of any digital production as well as Matthew Morgan's correct response that the signal (packet)portion of the FW data is either going to work 100% or not at all, I'd like to add my two cents on generic vs quality FW cable.
Brief explaination: FW is sent in "packets" with a timing signal. If you have an inferior cable (read that cheap w/out decent shielding), you may lose that timeing signal, and the FW circuit on the other end of the cable can't properly sort out the packet information w/out the timing signal. The result will be no connection at all. That's why FW cable specific on cable length: the "packets" need to be timed from one end of the cable to the other,and w/out going into detail, the lenght is determined by the frequency of the "packets".
IMHO, inferior FW cable will cause the majority of problems in loss of connection. Sometimes just a bend or coil of the cable is enough to warp open the shield-wrap and interrupt the signal timing. On some quality FW cable, there may be up to four(quad) wrap to insure that that doesn't happen.
So, my suggestion is that you choose quality cable. And price does not always mean that you will get what you pay for.

Should I get a non-Apple Brand Nano Charger?
I am going on vacation in a few weeks and want to take my Nano with me. I won't be taking a laptop so I need to buy a charger.
I found this one http://www.emtcompany.com/products/tcipodw.htm for $6.95 with free shipping. Am I taking a chance with this one or am I better off purchasing an Apple-branded charger for $29.95?
I like the fact that this one doesn't need my sync cable as it has one built in.

Nano 4Gb Windows XP ProI have seen other posts about this and they mention using your existing cable and a powered USB hub. These are usually very cheap from your local computer/electronics store. The thing to check is the size of the hub's power pack versus the special Nano charger you've seen.

Very few 3rd party wireless extenders will work with an Apple router, so your best bet is always to use an extender that is the same brand as the main router. An AirPort Express is a popular choice for this type of application with another Apple router.
If you had a Cisco router, then a Cisco extender would be your best bet. Same for Netgear, etc.
But......a wireless extender can only "extend" the quality of wireless signal that it receives, and not much of a wireless signal is going to make it through a brick wall, so whether any extender might do what you want is open to question.
You won't know whether an extender using wireless to connect will work to your satisfaction in your home until you actually try it out in your home.
The performance will always be much better if you can connect the extending device back to the main router using a wired Ethernet cable connection.
If it is not possible to run the Ethernet cable, a pair of Ethernet power line adapters might be able to send the signal over the existing AC power lines in your home. The theory with these devices is that you already have the wiring in place, you just need the adapters.
In practice though, things do not always work as well as the theory might suggest, so if you decide to try a pair of adapters, it might be a good idea to understand the store's return policies before you buy. -
Okay, so I got my new iBook and one of the "Apple AV Cables for iBook" that are sold through the online store. I plugged it in to my iBook and the TV, but all I get is sound. So, if my port is not an AV port, but rather an A port, if you will, what kind of iBook is it that DOES have an AV port? If none of them do, (seems odd that my brand new one wouldn't) how can Apple sell the things at all?

Yeah, that cable is for older iBooks. iBook G4s use this adapter.
I made that same mistake before, and was forced to sell it on eBay to get a near 20 dollar profit back as Apple wanted a restocking fee I believe.
Notice that the iBook G4 adapter only outputs video. To output audio as well, you'll need to buy a "Y-Adapter" like the one here.

I used to be able to play video podcasts on my TV by connecting my iPod touch to the TV via an Apple AV cable. Now that I've upgraded to ios 6 and the podcasts app got installed along with the upgrade, video podcasts will no longer play on my TV when connecting the iPod to the Tv via an Apple AV cable. It should be noted that other video content (movies, TV shows, etc) will play when connecting the iPod to the TV via an Apple AV cable. Is there a setting I need to make that will fix this, or is this yet another bug with the podcasts app? Or is the Podcast app for some reason designed so that you are unable to output a signal via the AV cable when playing back video content (this would be a pretty bad decision on apple's part). Also, I have to say that I'm not happy at all with the Podcasts app, so if there's a way to uninstall it without harming the functionality of ios 6, that would be great.
I found a workaround that puts podcasts back in the video app as well as the music app so you can watch them on TV via an AV cable again.

In short:
1. Make sure both the music and podcast app aren't running on your iPhone.
2. Plug your iPhone into your computer and disable Podcast syncing for your iPhone in iTunes.
3. Remove the podcast app from your iPhone
4. Plug your iPhone into your computer again and turn on podcast syncing, then sync.
5. Turn off and then back on your iPhone.
After I did this, I found podcasts had returned to being listed in my music and video apps.

Looking for an iPod classic original Apple brand carry case.
Does anyone have a classic iPod original Apple brand carry case? I'd love to buy it (them) from you! I use mine to carry my iPod and iPhone on my belt, but mine has been with me for 6-7 years and is wearing out. If you have one of these sitting around in GOOD shape (with belt clip still attached and not damaged) I'd love to take it off your hands!
I don't have the original pouch (I don't even know what that is), but I did find this case I was looking for, and yes it was on eBay, and the guy was selling a bunch of them and I got 4 for like $4.50 each... what a deal. I think the original one I bought back in 2003 or 2004 was $30. So now I have 4 of these at the ready so when they wear out or break (like the previous ones I've had all did) I've got more.
All that to say... I don't need to find this case anymore b/c I found it on eBay and bought a bunch. THANKS! -
Now that Apple branded DVD media (DVD-R/-RW x2, 4, 8) No Longer Exists.....
I've had my Powerbook G4 for about 3 years now and have only been successful burning DVDs with Apple's own branded media. Other branded media has had a fairly high fail-rate with my UJ-816 Superdrive and there are no firmware updates for the model. Apple-branded media is just short of a ZERO fail rate (maybe 2-3 lost out of 200-300 DVDs and many hundreds of CDRs - honest, it's been that good).
Apple branded DVD-R/-RW media compatible with x2/x4/x8 (I have an x2 but it's been fine using x8) IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE. I've dug through Apple stores, Best Buy, online stores, eBay, MacMall, J&R Electronics, etc. and nothing.
So, does anyone else with one of these slower burning Superdrives have any recommendations for other branded media that they've found works successfully?
Thanks - I'm desperately trying to complete backup of a 30,000+ track audio library to DVD and this is really the wrong time to find the only media that worked is no longer marketed.

Apple sold Mitsubishi discs. These are currently sold as Mitsubishi-Kagaku Media (MKM) by Verbatim & Infiniti (of England). You can shop by 'brand' locally, if you rewrite the 'brand' table on 'digitalfaq' by replacing the manufacturer by those manufacturers it subcontracts to (I assume the worst). :-[ Sony, Kodak, Panasonic, & Verbatim sell only the best, often Taiyo Yuden: reportedly the best manufacturer! But Taiyo Yuden can be bought directly from such internet stores as www.supermediastore.com/, where 200 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs in black, plastic sleeves are currently on sale for $40: that's US$ 0.20 each. Internet superstore like this are supposed to list the media codes, but all I've ever found is MKM listed. Other codes just list the brand's name: some brands don't even manufacture discs, and others that manufacture even the best discs subcontract to poor manufacturers when the company is in need. Taiyo Yuden doesn't subcontract. If you buy a mystery brand (which I don't believe is economical), check the return policy: they will replace discs that fail from visible damage, but who has the time for that? As a final note, many drives burn my MKM001s at 8x (because, I suspect, they consulted Verbatim when writing their firware table), whereas my LaCie writer (Samsung OEM) writes it at 2x (because, I suspect, they more responsibly consulted MKM for their table). If you burned Apple's DVD-Rs at 8x, check with Apple or http://www.cdfreaks.com/ and ask what speed your drive will burn the Taiyo Yuden DVD-R or the Verbatim DVD-RW, claimed to burn at 4x and currently selling for about US$1.00 each. I've a list of reputable internet stores selling blank media which I initially found, then added to from Germany (which are bilingual stores) & France (which wouldn't think of it). Apple likely prefers I offer such lists by e-mail. You're welcom to write, from a .Mac alias. PS. Check out 'Office Depot' brand on the first website.

A seperate audio cable isn't required for your MBpro model. It will send audio over the HDMI cable if you use the proper MiniDisplay port to HDMI adapter that supports audio.
