You will need to call AppleCare....they can issue new DVD's for a small fee

What model PowerMac do you have? The AHT is on the Install/Restore disc that came with your Mac.

I'm STILL trouble shooting my slow iMac. I figure this may point me in the general right direction.
My question is if my computer came with Tiger, and Leopard is now installed, which startup disc should I use?

Hi:
Try the OS X 10.5 DVD (boot while holding down the "D" key). I have, frankly, never tried to run an "old" hardware test on a "new" computer, but nothing should be harmed by trying.
Incidentally, slow is usually software-related not hardware-related.

I am aware it came with the original installation from 4 years ago. But the original installation is not available. Is this available and be downloaded from somewhere else?

No you cannot download the AHT however you can call Apple and they can replace the installation disc for a nominal fee. That way you will have both it and the AHT for future use. Getting a replacement disc is wise because sooner or later you may need it if you plan to sell the machine or need to re-install the OS.

IMac intel late 2006, lost DVDs, how to run apple hardware test

I have an iMac intel core 2 duo late 2006. I have upgraded it to snow leopard. From two months ago, it began to show distorted pictues, random lines/pixels/, and regular freezing. But if I boot it into the safe mode, it works well, although there is no sound or webcam. I did a research online and it seems that I should run apple hardware test (AHT) first. But the DVDs came withi this machines have been lost. where can I download this software? I would greatly appreciate your help if any of you who also have this model of machine and would like to lend me your DVDs.

There is no way to run the AHT without the discs.
If it works OK in safe mode then you might think about:
Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Reinstall Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

Apple Hardware Test won't start from original Apple DVD

I'll make this one short and to the point, and here're what I did to try to start the Apple Hardware Test - and failed:
1) Disconnected all connected network and hardware except the bare essentials (Apple USB keyboard and mouse).
2) Insert DVD#1 of the original iMac media (then OS X v10.5.2)
3) Shut off iMac. Start, holding 'D' key (with the iMac DVD#1 in the drive)
4) Keep holding 'D' key, AHT didn't start, instead the DVD disc ejects, and the grey screen shows folder with question mark, nothing happens thereafter.
5) Repeated 10x, no difference.
Somebody knows what's wrong?

Holding down C key does start the Mac OS X installer; in which I was able to "partially" diagnose that my HDD is toast by using the Disk Utility. It formats (erases), but as soon as I finished erasing, I tried to verify the disk, and it says it already has problems and cannot be repaired.
I am thinking if during the loading of AHT (from DVD), it tries to cache some files onto the internal hard drive. Since my drive is no good - thus the reason for my using AHT, which is to find out if I get a 4HDD/11 type error - the AHT simply cannot load under my circumstances.

Separate Apple Hardware Test DVD for MacBook Pro original??

Hey Folks, I'm trying to verify whether or not the MacBook Pro came with the Apple Hardware Test as a separate DVD disk. The "MacBook Pro" Install disk references it but I can't seem to find the software on that DVD. Any guesses out there would be appreciated. I'm about to perform an upgrade for Tiger to Leopard and wnat to give my laptop the "hairy eyeball" before I begin.

Insert the DVD and start up the computer with the D key held down. The Hardware Test is on a separate area of the DVD and isn't normally accessible.

Well, I've tried some experiments:
1) Removed the hard disk from the MacBook, and tried starting up while holding down the D key. Question mark icon. So apparently the AHT is not in ROM, but ensconced somewhere invisibly on the HD.
2) Put the HD back in, started the MacBook from a standard, late-2007 retail 10.5.1 Install DVD (not the Install/Restore DVD that came with it). No AHT of course. And when it started up, the backlight went dark. Shining a lamp on the screen and looking from an angle, I was able to see enough to erase the HD. And tried starting again with the D pressed. Question mark icon. So apparently the AHT is not in a special HD partition that persists even when the HD is erased.
3) Installed 10.5.1 on the MacBook HD using the standard 10.5 Install DVD (not the Install/Restore DVD that came with it); once again, running the MacBook from that DVD turned the display backlight off. Then started the MacBook with the D key pressed. Question mark icon. So the standard, retail 10.5 Installer doesn't install the AHT.
4) Started the MacBook from its own Install/Restore DVD, and restored the factory HD setup. When setup was finished, shut down and started again pressing the D key. Apple Hardware Test (v.3A143) appeared.
Conclusion: Apple Hardware Test is on the hard disk, not in ROM, installed as part of the software specific to this model. If the disk is erased and System software is installed from a generic 10.5 DVD - for instance, because the original Install/Restore DVDs have been lost - AHT will not be installed. So the instructions in the manual apply only so long as the original disk setup (or a restoration of same using the original DVDs) remains. Otherwise the original Install Disc #1 will be required to run Apple Hardware Test.

Apple Hardware Test on Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo (early 2007) with no DVD?

My Mac is keep on freezing and I would really like to know what is wrong with it. (I did PRAM NVRAM reset 100 times... didnt help.)
I can't find my OSX Tiger DVD which was included when i bought my Macbook Pro in January 2007. So I've been reading through forums like crazy trying to find another way to run AHT (apple hardware test). So far I came up empty.
So my question is: If I upgrade from Lion (which is my current osx on this machine) to Mountain Lion, will I be able to use online AHT (option + d)? Or more general: is there any way to run AHT on my machine or any other way to find the broken component. or should i just throw it away?

Take your machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and they will run free diagnostics. If there's a lot that needs to be done on your machine to get it back up and running, ask about Apple's flat-rate repair pricing. For less than $350, you could have a machine that is almost like new.

How do I run the Apple Hardware Test? Its not on my DVD and the Internet-connected version tells me my computer isn't supported!

I have a mini - late 2010 2.4 ghz core 2 duo - that just started black-screen crashing and failing to wake from sleep. Up to a few dasy ago this was a really bulletproof machine! When trying to restart it afer a crash it sometimes emits three weak beeps (sometimes more).
Apart from spontaneous motherboard failure (??) I can only guess that the RAM failed (an 8GB upgrade installed last fall). I pulled one 4GB RAM board and the mini booted again! But it still sometimes fails to wake from sleep, and sometimes give the three beeps. I've run REMBER (a memory test program) on one of the RAM boards and it passes the test. My next step is to test the second one -- but whether it passes or fails there seems to be something else going on.
I'd love to try the Apple Hardware Test but:
- pressing D on startup has no effect (even when starting up with the original install DVD)
- pressing Option-D brings up an Internet-loading screen that brings up a Hardware Test screen then tells me my computer is not supported.
Is the AHT simply unavailable for my model of Mac? And/or is there any way to test my hardware?

The 2010 Mac Mini's came with a 2 DVD set, a Mac OS X Install DVD (22691-6657-A) and an Application DVD (22691-6658 -A). The Apple Hardware Test is on the Application DVD (22691-6658-A).

I have a MacBook Pro with Lion Preinstalled, so AHT was present on the hard disc and worked when the product was new. One of the first things I did from new was run AHT and it worked fine. But now it doesn't start - instead the machine (eventually) boots into normal OS X.

Thanks. However, even with an internet connection that doesn't work for me - the machine just (after an extended delay) boots normally. It doesn't download.
Option-D works for an Internet-based AHT. However that only works with an internet connection. It doesn't seem to download it and install it - it needs internet every time.
Any idea how my local copy of AHT disappeared? I haven't repartitioned the drive or knowingly deleted anything. And how do I reinstate it (because if you need AHT your hardware problems may preclude internet access!)?

Have the Mini's Serial# handy & call Apple Care, they usually have original replacement Discs available.

Some G5s had a firmware update that caused problems with the version of Apple Hardware Test that shipped with the G5. The Latest G5 Apple Hardware Test is 2.2.5
Call Apple and see if you can get it.

Meanwhile, try testing with some of the RAM removed. Try different combinations of RAM modules and slots. Always use them in pairs.

Running Apple Hardware test from DVDs

Hi,
I am trying to run Apple Hardware Test, following the instructions at this site.
Restarted the machine with the letter D pressed, disconnected external devices, except mouse-keyboard and my (2) screens.
I disconnected i-lok dongle from PT HD/digidesign at an usb port and connections to the external audio intefcaes .
There are 2 pci-e cards inside this 1,1 MAc Pro.
I know It is a bit weird to ask this ( I used to do this with a G4 and a G3), but I only see the disc open with all the installation content and no AHT icon or utility.
I tried DVD1, 2 of 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6.

I might be doing something wrong.

Lost apple hardware tests disk

Does anybody know where i may be able to obtain another copy of the apple hardware test disk? I thought it was on my installation disks but its not.

Did you try this:
1. Insert Install Disk 1.
2. Restart & hold option key as it start up.
3. Click Apple Hardware Test when available startup volumes appear.
4. Click the right arrow.
5. The Apple Hardware Test main screen should appear.
