Need assistance with Flashing Question Mark

I recently bought a used MacBook Pro. The computer is in excellent shape, and nothing physically wrong with the computer at all. The MBP came with OSX already installed and running, and also had Boot Camp and Windows XP running on it as well. Since I purchased it used, the previous owner did not have the restore disks.
Before I knew I was able to order a copy of the disks from Apple, I attempted to use my friends restore disks from his MBP. I first received an error, that the Software was not designed for this computer. He has a newer model, so I ended up using the disk utility to perform a clean up on the computer. I Zero'ed out the HDD, single pass, and deleted and recreated the partition on the HDD. Since this is the first MAC I have owned (previously sold, and worked on Macs), I did not know that MACs required 2 partitions on the HDD for everyday use. 1 Partition being installation, and the other being the OS. Well when using Disk Utility, I created only 1 large partition (previous Windows tech).
Since then I am unable to boot into any disks. I also purchased Tiger v10.4 and I am unable to boot to the DVDs. I verified I am using the Installation Disk 1, and all I get is the flashing ? folder icon. I reset the PRAM, tried to boot to several other disks and flash drives, with no luck. I was able to boot into Suse DVD and complete an install, but failed on the boot loader, due to partition issue. I even have Tech Tools disk, which is supposed to be bootable, but will not boot.
Currently I am working on a clean single partition drive, and no where to go. I have contacted Apple to order new disks, but I still want to try and get this running ASAP as this is my primary computer since I got rid of my PC.
Any ideas or steps I can take to get this HDD partitioned properly and/or booting to a DVD/CD?????

Sorry for your troubles, but there's really nothing you can do without the proper Install DVDs. Install DVDs for Intel-based Macs are machine- and build-specific (i.e. MacBook DVDs won't work on MBPs, Core2Duo MBP discs won't work for CoreDuo MBPs, and the retail Tiger install DVDs that you bought are only for PPC-based machines, not Intel.)
FYI, you only need one partition, not two. Not sure where you got that information, but it's wrong.
So, your only option at this point is to wait for those replacement discs. Once they arrive, boot from the Install DVD 1, select your language, and when the menu bar comes up choose Utilities > Disk Utility, erase your drive, single partition is fine, then proceed to the installation.
Chalk this one up to experience - insist on getting the original system discs next time
FYI, once Loepard comes out, those discs will be 'universal' (i.e. for all Intel and PPC-based Macs).

    There are a few things that cause this, I've found.
    Sometimes it's because the email includes images in a format that Mail doesn't like, but it can also be because the attached graphics had their names changed (or were deleted completely) by an outgoing- or incoming-mail virus scanner, or because the graphics weren't really included in the email, but were really just HTML links to images stored on a web site somewhere, and the site has gone down or moved the images.
    You can usually tell which has happened by looking at the message's attachments. If there aren't any attachments, then either they've been deleted or stripped from the message, or the message points to dead Internet links.
    If there are attached files, you can look at them to see if they have names that look funny (e.g., many virus programs add the word "DEFANGED" to file names), and might have been changed. Also see if they come up with the right icon (Picture icon saying JPEG, GIF, BMP, or PNG, usually). If they're just plain white generic file icons, then they might be something that your computer can't read.

    Your iMac is actually turning ON as proven by the grey folder with the flashing question mark.
    The flashing question mark indicates that your system is unable to find a bootable volume. The clicking sound that you hear is probably coming from your hard drive while it tries to recalibrate. I suspect your hard drive has failed.
    What model imac do you have? If it's under warranty I suggest taking it in for service. Hopefully you've been maintaining a regular backup of your data as all users should. I lost my data once and it was a valuable lesson. I back up regularily now.
    If your iMac came with install disks then you can boot from them, choose your language when asked, then pull down the Utilities menu to launch the Disk Utility application. The Disk Utility application will allow you to verify whether your hard drive has an issue. Usually a clicking sound, assuming it's coming from the hard drive, is a sign of a bad hard drive.
    If your system has Lion installed then you can hold down the Command and R keys when you restart the system, then launch the Disk Utility application from the menu that appears.

    Hello everyone, I got this White MacBook Mac OS X 10.4.11 yesturday I was updating limewire and iTunes, I was downloading some songs from Limewire when all of a sudden my macbook frozed. So I restart my macbook and I got this grey=blank screen whit a flashing question mark on it.     It means certain system files needed for startup are corrupted. You will have to reinstall OS X. If your hard drive is unaffected you can try the following:
    How to Perform an Archive and Install
    An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
    Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

    Here's the issue. I got a new Mac Pro (awesome) and had the old G4 sitting idle on another desk for months, waiting to see if I needed anything from it before I wiped it clean. So today, I decided to wipe it. I inserted the Mac OS 10.5 install disc and performed a clean install.
    Except it froze near the end of the install. Nothing worked. So... reluctantly, I turned it off.
    Now I've got the flashing folder with the question mark. I've tried starting with the C key... nothing. I've tried the option key to select the CD drive startup... nothing is showing up. I put in the original install discs that came with it... nothing. Diskwarrior... nothing.
    Any suggestions on how I can boot from the CD drive?

    My Mac is showing a flashing folder with a question mark in it when I start it up.
    I've looked it up and most people say to reinstall it with the installation disk. Problem is, the Mac is a hand me down so I don't have the disk...
    Is there any other way to fix it?

    Press Option.
    If you see the internal drive, click on it and then select it in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    If not, you'll need a different Mac OS X system to resolve it.

    My mac just froze,i had to do force shut down,when i restarted it i had the flashing question mark.Did all the instruction that are given in the site:restarting with the installation CD and then using the *disc utility*-BUT i could not find the hard drive that i need to do the "repair disc " on.So i did what the document said and i reset the PRAM-still my hard drive does not show up in the disc utility.I also tried to reset the SMC but again -same result.
    please please try and help me,is my HD doomed? is there anything else i should try?

    I have the exact same problem.
    Today, when I turned my macbook on, it was so slow, that I decided to restart it. When I turned it on again, I got the folder with a questionmark in it on the display. Tried to put the installer CD in, but it couldn't find the HDD. Ran the Disk Utility, which said: "Invalid node structure" and "Invalid record count".
    I think the HDD is "destroyed", because it makes strange sounds. But how? And why?
    The Macbook isn't even a year old.
    Any help?

    Before taking it in for service, I'd folllow this article. Although it's possible it's a drive issue, it's equally likely to be something else. That article walks you through steps to fix it if it's not the drive.
    Note: For the archive & install, if you're on 10.6, follow the disk instructions, if you're on 10.7 or later, you'll want to boot into the recovery partition. To do that, just boot the computer while holding down the Command+R button. No need for disks.

  • IMac with flashing Question-Mark Folder

    I've read all of the help on the flashing Question-Mark Folder.  Nothing has helped.  In fact, Disk Utility only finds 'Disk 0' with the base OS X operating system.  All of the disk utility buttons are grayed out and at the top on the left of is 'Media' (not disk drive - not formatted?).  When I try to recover from the internet and re-install OSX Maverick, it can't find a disk to install on.  Does anyone know what happened and can this be fixed?

    These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:

    In most cases the problems may be caused by one or more of these:
    Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
    Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
    Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
    The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
    Note that the information I have provided is what Apple recommends, If other users suggest different solutions than found here, then be sure what they recommend does not impact on your warranty, if any, or ability to get continuing Apple service.
    Please don't start removing drives or changing cables unless you know what you are doing and have exhausted other non-invasive alternatives outlined here. If you perform any work yourself that is unapproved by Apple, then you will void any warranty you may have and lose all further Apple Support.

    The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.

    Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
    Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • IMac 9,1 Grey Screen with Flashing Question Mark (After HDD Replaced)

    Hello, I have an iMac 9,1 and it recently booted with a grey screen and a flashing question mark. My HDD made a very loud ticking noise, which to my knowledge and people on Google, the HDD is basically dead. No big deal. I purchased and replaced the HDD myself, no more ticking but I still get the same screen. I put in my OSX installer DVD and it spits it back out. Tried holding C on start up, same thing. I tried reseting the PRAM and SMC, no luck. Can't boot into safe mode nor the start up manager. I just get a blank screen with the cursor that I can move around, that's it.
    However, I was also to boot the Apple Hardware Test through the 2nd CD that came with my installer by holding D on start up. Ran the test, no hardware errors found. I've tried so many things such as the ones listed above, I tested the RAM as well and I'm stumped. Please help. Thanks.
    Edit: I also tried booting into single user mode. That doesn't work either. I also tested the OSX installer in my MacBook to make sure the disc wasn't bad and it booted the disc no problem with the full installer.

    That may work, if you have a retail (not a gray) installation disc, but the MB will then be set to boot from the iMac's drive. You'll need to reset the startup disk in the Startup Disk preference pane on the MB.
    Thanks, I'll certainly give this a try. I'm really hoping this works out because I feel like I've tried everything and seeing no hardware errors makes me feel like I can do something on my end rather than dropping hundreds of dollars to get it fixed.

  • File with flashing question mark on startup?

    So my MacBook Air just recently started this, with the white screen and grey box with a flashing question mark in it upon starting it up. Safe Boot did nothing, the question mark file continued to appear.
    Holding down the Alt button seems to be the only thing that has yeilded any other response. When I hold the Alt button down on startup, it asks me to connect to a wireless internet (which I have). After connecting, it goes into Internet Recovery, where it shows a rotating globe and loads up, usually taking a couple of minutes.
    Then I get the white page with the apple logo, and a loading circle.
    After that, I get the grey page with Mac OS X Utilities.
    From here, I have no idea what to do. My computer was only recently returned to me after a login error, where all my files has been removed and deleted, so it was at Factory settings. Since then, I haven't had enough things on my compter to use Time Machine Backup or anything like that. so I have no backup sources for it to restore from.
    I have been able to get onto the internet, but only in a small box on top of the grey background.
    I tried to reinstall Mac OS X Lion from here, but when I agree to the terms and conditions, it gives me no disk to install it too, so therefore I cannot continue ahead with the installation.
    As for Disk Utility, when I click on the left hand side Mac OS X Base System, there is nothing under First Aid that is highlighted for me to click (show details is also checked)
    Nothing under Erase is highlighted for me to click on either.
    In the Restore selection, The source (Mac OS X Base System) has Image highlighted beside it. I can click onto that, but from there I have no clue what to do.
    This about the sum of all the options my computer is giving me at the moment.
    I have no speakers or cords that hook up to my computer (seeing how its a MacBook Air)
    As far as I am aware, I have no disks or CDs or external drives that have any programme to help me restore it. I also am not entirely certain what my current systems were, with how up to date everything was, before this happened, but I assume they were all the latest seeing how it was only just fixed a month ago.
    If there are any suggestions, your help would be great.
    If my files can be saved, that is awesome. But if they have to be cleared, I am not at all phazed by doing that either.

    If Disk Utility left panel shows only "Mac OS X Base System", it would seem that it is not detecting your main drive at all.
    I would take the system into an Apple Store for diagnosis.

    I opened up Disk Utility but it only shows one of my two hard drives. I'm guessing it's toast. But before I go buy a new one, is there any value in going into an apple store and see what they can do?

    I have the same problem with my brand new Mac Pro. from the start, upon bootup, i see a flashing folder with a question mark. I've already sent this Mac back for service. I believe the problem may have something to do with the airport card i had installed. something about the OS trying to find the wireless network...i'm not savy at this, by any means and hope we both resolve this issue. Do you an airport card installed?

       If I start up my MacBook Pro, It will have the flashing question mark folder UNLESS i plug in the OS-Boot flash drive. When I at the desktop screen and work on a program, When I unplug the Flash drive, THE OS WILL CRASH AS IF I TOOK it's soul (OS x Lion) out of the body (MacBook Pro Laptop)
    this is frustrating because when I did the INTERNET RECOVERY, When I install OS x Lion, the Flash Drive only show up as an option as opposed to the HDD.
    I cannot format the hard-drive in DISK UTILITY because it's grayed out. This is just frustating. I never had problems with PC Windows OS recovery but this (Mac OS).
