Need Best way to start learning Oracle 11g DBA
Hi.This is Tejaswi.
I want to learn Oracle 11g DBA.I've downloaded all software's and Documentation for Orcl 11g R2. Now. i want to start Learning DBA. Can any one suggest me the best way to Start learning DBA?
Please suggest me the good books For Oracle Architecture and SQL.......
Hello Tejaswi,
The advice you got about reading the Oracle Concepts and 2 Day DBA documentation is very good advice.
I found that knowing some SQL*Plus and SQL Developer was also very helpful as, they both provide a way to interface with the database and try the things you read about. For SQL Plus, I used the book:
Oracle SQL*Plus: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition
By Jonathan Gennick
Publisher : O'Reilly
ISBN : 0-596-00746-9 I openly recommend it. It is easy to read, the book is very well thought out, it covers what you really need to know (and more too). The author explains the subjects very well. I would definitely learn some SQL Plus and SQL developer before getting into the 2 Day DBA document (make those 2 days about 7 days each if not more).
To learn SQL, I "sort of" used (I say "sort of" because I only read some parts of it available online and at the local bookstore):
Oracle SQL by Example
By Alice Rischert
Publisher: Prentice Hallit probably has more SQL than you'd need as a DBA but, it is an excellent book you may want to consider.
If you are starting from scratch, as I did, you'll find that you need to learn multiple things at the same time. I believe SQL Plus is the best place to start, along with possibly the Concepts document. That will give you a base to build upon.
HTH,
John.

Please suggest me the best way to start learning about Oracle Purchasing.
Hi,
I have started reading about Oracle Procurement. I have an over all idea of how ERP functions. Anyhow I am like a fresher to ORACLE APPS. Can you pleasesuggest me what is the best way to start learning about Oracle Purchasing.
Is it is throuhg user guides or some thing else..... can you please specify the references also.......
Thank you so much.If you have a sponsorship, I would recommend taking classes with Oracle University. The other resources are documentation, functional and technical depending on what your interests are.
If you can load Vision database or access vision database (I think solutionbeacon offers a free account to login and play around), that will be another resource as well.
As you learn, join as much user groups like this one, and review all questions and answers in the discussions to understand and learn more.
Hope this helps. -
Total Newbie, best way to start learning?
After much frustration with having others design my website
for me and not getting what I want, I figured what the hell, I'm
going to learn it myself. As I'm reasonably familiar with Photoshop
CS3 through my photography, DW seems the logical next step,
although I'm also considering learning to code from scratch, just
using NotePad or TextPad or something like that. The whole coding
thing intimidates the hell out of me, though.
Do I really NEED to learn the basics of coding BEFORE diving
into DW, or can DW help me learn the coding as I use the Design or
Split modes?Hello,
"Do I really NEED to learn the basics of coding BEFORE diving
into DW, or
can
DW help me learn the coding as I use the Design or Split
modes? "
You don't have to, and you will certainly learn things by
looking at what
happens in code view as you do things in design view.
However, spending the time to learn the basics first will
make DW far easier
for you to use.
It will also save you a tremendous amount of time, and
frustration, in the
long run.
It will also save you from making mistakes that might end up
undoing hours
of work when you realize there's a problem with something.
A good place to start:
http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp
You can "play" with live examples of code that start with the
basics.
Change the code and see, in real time, what happens...right
there.
It's a great way to learn.
Or alternate at least. Go through a few pages at w3 and play
with DW.
If you just jump into DW, the learning curve will be huge and
painful.
Once you start to understand code, you'll understand how
things work, but
more importantly, what you can do.
This is key, because you will need to make an adjustment in
how you think of
design when going from static image design to web design.
When you produce a design in Photoshop, the layout will
essentially look the
same to all viewers.
However, when you produce a webpage you have users who have
different text
size settings (text is bigger or smaller while images on the
page remain the
same), view the site in different sized browser windows and a
host of other
things you can't control. The web is too dynamic.
With the above said, I'd like to give you a big piece of
advice that will
hopefully prevent a mistake many new users make.
Don't use AP Divs to layout your page.
You're sure to run across them in DW, and you might think,
"Hey, I can drag
things where I want them!"
It's tempting to use, especially because it is familiar in
function to
dragging things around in applications like Photoshop.
However, as I mentioned, the web is dynamic and using AP Divs
to layout a
page will likely result in you posting back here with
significant problems.
Things like your page breaks, text overflows into other areas
of the page or
things don't line up when I change browser window size.
There have been many people who have built entire sites using
AP Divs to
layout their pages, only to find out what the problems are
when viewed in
different browsers. They then had to rebuild their entire
site.
You're off to a good start by using this forum.
Read through some posts, and ask questions often.
It will be a huge help as you learn.
Take care,
Tim

Sysctl.conf - best way to start at boot?
Hi all!
My arch box serves as firewall/router to other boxes on my home network. Obviously, I have to use NAT and net.ipv4 forwarding set to 1 (via sysctl.conf file).
My question is: what's the best way to start sysctl at boot, so those kernel variables are set (forwarding, syncookies etc.)?
Currently, I've:
- put my little script with "sysctl -p" line in rc.d directory;
- call that script from rc.conf;
- sysctl.conf is in /etc .
It works... but, I wander what is the better/proper way of doing it.Thanks aCoder.
With some other distros, it would be done automatically (sysctl at boot). User just needs to set values of the sysctl.conf file.
With Arch, both steps are manual - and I didn't know any better way. In other hand, that's what Arch is about, eh!

Best way to start a new catalog for 2009 ?
Hi,
What's the best way to start a new catalog for the new year, with all the keywords and all the presets of the modules (without having to export all the folders) of previous catalog 2008 ?
Thanks,
DominiqueWell there is a cost too in not being able to find all your images in a single step, and inconsistencies soon develop - eg a keyword is plural in one catalogue, singular in another. Speed or stability issues are not simply related to catalogue size, and I've seen decently-performing catalogues 50% bigger than yours (as well as slow ones of a few hundred images). Have you optimized the catalogue recently?
But if you think it's a good idea to fragment control of your picture collection.... Presets will be carried over to a new catalogue as they belong to the machine (unless you have the save with catalogue preference turned on). Keywords can be moved via the Metadata > Export and Import Keywords command. If you have lots of collections and smart collections, then maybe make a copy of your existing catalogue and then remove all the items from it - making sure you don't trash them of course.

Do you recommend me "Learning Oracle 11g Training DVD - Tutorial Video"?
Hi
I found on Amazon "Learning Oracle 11g Training DVD - Tutorial Video by InfiniteSkills". Is it worth it? There are no Amazon reviews :-(
Do you use other video training? What do you recommend me?I don't know if the video is any good, but Lewis Cunningham is a reasonably well-known authority on Oracle. He talks about the release of the video in his blog, gives a table of contents and a link to some samples:

Starting Learning Oracle Form Developer
Hi Experts,
i m oracle dba. i wan to start learning Oracle Form Developer 10g . please any one can share documentation that can help me out to start this domain.
regards,Is there a particular reason you are starting with an old version and not the latest (11.1.2.0)? Version 10.1.2 will begin its end of life cycle at the end of this year. Meaning, Error Correction Support will end. Learning with the newest version will give you the advantage of working with the latest features and a more stable version.
At any rate.... how easy it will be to learn will all depend on your current skill set and your prior experience with other development tools. I would suggest you first get a basic understand of how Forms works before you start to build an application. Building an application in Forms is mostly easy because the more common features are wizard driven. However, understand what to do once you create an app might take a little more thought and an understanding of basic web principles.
The version 10 documentation (mostly related to deployment) can be found here:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/forms/documentation/techlisting10gr2-093389.html
Here you will find many white papers which include everything from complex concepts to basic product overviews.
You can access similar content for all of the recent versions from the top page located here:

The Forms Builder help is a good place for design time information. -

SirajSiraj,
I second to Someoneelse's reply that you must start with that product version which is supported now and will be supported in the future , atleast for some time. This includes both 10g , 11g and both are freely available for download at http://otn.oracle.com.
That said, for anyone who is starting with Oracle, one must bookmarked site is , http://tahiti.oracle.com. This is Oracle's documentation which is free and very helpful. Out of this, in the first place, you should start reading Concepts Guide. This would make you understand what Oracle is and how it works. But, docs can be very boring and long to read so besides this, I shall recommend to buy these 2 books ,
http://www.amazon.com/Expert-One-Oracle-Thomas-Kyte/dp/1861004826
http://www.amazon.com/Expert-Oracle-Database-Architecture-Programming/dp/1590595300/ref=pd_sim_b_2
Both are by Thomas Kyte. These books will help you in getting an overall picture with some very good insight which at times, is missing from docs. Besides all this, this forum is always there where you can bring your doubts.

Best way to change from Oracle 11gR2 Standard Edition to Standard one..?
Hi,
I have installed Oracle 11gR2 Standard edition+ installed database and additional software (which looks into the Oracle 11g database) in around 20 PCs (company)
But now the management says that they got license only for 11g Standard one edition (Standard one is significantly cheaper than standard edition)
So I have to change the Oracle edition from Standard to Standard one now..We only need standard one edition features in the PCs.
Can somebody please advise what would be the best way to do this? Do I have to uninstall all database and reinstall standard one edition again?
I will be grateful if somebody says some kind of upgrade is possible(in this case degrade!)..
Pls ..waiting for a reply..its very urgent!
Thanks®ards..Yes I agree there was standard and standard one options and I selected standard.
But how to confirm?

2) No RAC on SE1
3) No Automatic Workload Management (a RAC feature) on SE1
These apply to us.
So can we get a SE1 license, since we are not on RAC and satisfy all criteria for standard one.

Migrated new MBPro = slow . Best way to start again without same problem
Hi
I bought a Macbook Pro and on bootup I put my old powerbook with all my data into firewire mode and just migrated things across.
I have been very disappointed with the MBPro speed and have tried to clean it up a bit as I am assuming that Migrating things across has caused this slowness.
I am wanting to do a fresh install but need to get the critical things across
these include my Photo Library in iPhoto and My emails and my iTunes library and my address book. and bookmarks.
I will start from scratch with all the extra applications I have
So when I reinstall what is the best way to achieve this ?
I dont have .Mac accounts but I do have an external firewire hard drive.
To explain where the system is slow it is mainly on boot up and loading for the first time. I checked what was running and everything loaded is a UB so PPC stuff using Rossetta. The spec on the MBPro is standard with the 160gb drive. The powerbook is a 1.5ghz with and upgraded 7200 rpm drive. So I also assume that the PBook drive is a fraction faster but as everything else is way faster in the MBPro I would of though that this would still make the MBPro at least as fast to boot and load things.
It is not alot slower just a fraction but it is noticable. Once loaded the system seems fine and any cpu intensive stuff is way way faster
Thanksslow startup could be a sign of directory damage, as normal part of the boot process is doing a directory check. booting up on the intel should be much faster, not the other way around. have you tried booting to the install disk and running disk repair?? http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 that may be all that is needed to get the boot faster. as well, do you have anything hooked up to the mbpro during startup?? that could also be a factor. as well, if you have not done firmware updates for the mbpro, you should do that as well. this article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303880 gives up-to-date firmware versions and how to locate them on your mac. from what i gather there are limits in sharing one fw drive between a power pc and intel mac. see this thread. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2950422 here is the macosx hints discussion on creating a volume bootable by both types of computers. http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060322054212363&query=firewire%2B drive%2Bintel however, you would have to have the space available on the drive, and the inclination to put two different versions (one power pc, one intel!) of the os on one drive, so both volumes are bootable, one with each computer.
