Need Beta Testers for Photoshop CC 14.0-Specific Sharpening Actions

I've developed a new image sharpening actions set that I'm ready to release, but I'd like to invite a few folks who have cloud subscriptions and are running Photoshop CC 14.0 to try the actions first.
Photoshop CC comes with some great sharpening tools, and I'm trying to get a feel for whether my actions add value over and above the tools already there.  They do things a bit differently, leveraging the new detail-preserving upsampling method in Photoshop CC 14.0, and I've had some images for which the actions produced better looking results than the Smart Sharpen tool Photoshop provides out of the box.
All I'm looking for is for folks to try them out on their images, and let me know what they think of the results.
Users and Adobe folks alike are welcome.  I can't promise everyone who responds a set (I only need 10 or so testers), and I'll post another message on this thread when I have enough.
If you're interested, please eMail me at:  [email protected]

I've had it for a while now, and I've posted some positive things about it already.
The sharpening tools based on deconvolution algorithms are really world class, the detail-preserving upsampling is excellent, and I've even found some good uses for Shake Reduction.  The results I'm getting from astroimage processing with the new tools are great.  The 3D facilities have improved a good bit, if you're into that sort of thing.  I like the Upright features in Camera Raw.  I've had it straighten out some images that would have taken a lot of time with the Perspective Crop Tool or a transform.
Regarding bugs...  I've just reproduced a bug someone else reported with scrubbing the font size boxes after transforming text, but otherwise it's really a solid release from my perspective.  I honestly haven't had this build of Photoshop CC crash unexpectedly at all (in well over a month of hard use).  I've crashed it myself a few times running plug-in code under development (because of MY bugs, not theirs), and in those cases it auto-recovered my images.
All my plug-ins and actions work perfectly.  Only thing I had to do was update my installers because I had anticipated it being called CS7 instead of CC back when I coded them.
Something's slightly different during Ps CC 14.0 initialization - it made a problem I always had with Photoshop CS6 go away.  I used to have to wait a split second after Photoshop CS6 cold-started before I could do a File - Open from the menu.  The menus would be disabled (grayed-out) if I got in there too quickly.  Now I don't see that delay.  It was a little thing, but constantly irritating, and I'm really glad that's gone.
I like the newer OS dialogs (e.g., File - Open, File - Save) better; I sometimes need to do searches and the new Explorer dialogs facilitate that.  They also work perfectly with the codec pack I use (FastPictureViewer).
I still have Photoshop CS6 icons parked on my desktop right next to Photoshop CC, and I find that for other than specific testing I do not need nor crave using the older one at all.  I guess you'd say I find Photoshop CC as good or better in every way.
Relatively speaking, most things are the same speed as Photoshop CS6, though a few are incrementally faster (moving huge layers around on a very deep image is a good example).  Nothing seems slower to me.  It scores the same on the various Photoshop benchmarks I've tried.

  • What happened to Reunion?  need better options for genealogists, please.

    We need better options for genealogists, please.  What happened to Reunion???

    apologies for obtuse question.   Reunion is apparently no longer available from App Store.  Family Tree Maker is now available for MAC but  is not getting good reviews.  I have used both.  FYM on PC and then switched to Reunion, because  FTM was not available in 2008 when I got my Mac.
    Now I note that Ancestry is in cahoots with FTM so am tempted to switch again  but put off by the poor feedback.
    I thought that Reunion was also available for Iphone but not FTM??

  • Advice needed on monitor for Photoshop and Lightroom use

    Hi. I am aserious amature photographer wishing to move to the next level and sell some of my work.
    I just had a custom pc built to work with the new copies of Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3 I bought (lots or RAM and HD space, ssd, etc....)
    The last piece of my system is to purchase a monitor. I want to be somewhere in the better then Best Buy but less than NEC/Eizo range in price, or between $500 - $900. I have worked with cameras since the early 80's and moved to digital several years ago but the only post processing I have done is with Photoshop Elements.  I would be doing mostly prints to sell but also need to have a web site to do so. Will also use the pc for daily net surfing... but do not game or watch a lot of video on the pc.
    Being really new to this whole process I have a few questions.
    The first thing I need to decide is whether I need to look for a wide gamut display or not.
    I realize the whole chain must be 10 bit (Adobe -OS - graphics driver - graphics card - display port.
    I have Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom 3, Win7 64 bit, Zotac ZT 50701 10M video card (which uses GeForce GTX 560  fermi and an nvidia chipset. It does have displayport). I am having a hard time determining whether my video card actually supports wide gamut (10bit).
    Standard vs Wide Gamut? Is wide gamut important enough to deal with the issues it brings (calibration, viewing things other than PS and LR or color managed, which appear to be rare?) Is sRGB good enough for most prints (don't do fine art, mostly nature and portraits but starting to do some HRD things). If wide gamut is the way to go I have no problem with that and have the time to learn about calibration, color management, etc... But I also want to make sure the juice is worth the squeeze.
    24" vs 27"? Is there any advantage to one or the other when editing photos?
    IPS vs PLS? I realize they are similar but are there differences worth noting?
    Glossy vs Matte Anti-Glare? seems to be a lot of comments regarding the anti-glare coating, mostly poor. Yet I can see issues using a glossy screen in my study with a window to my back.
    One manufacturer vs another? I realize Eizo, NEC and LaCie are at the top of the heap. But with my budget, after upgrading my pc and camera equipment, I can't make that work now. So I need to choose from the next group down (Dell, HP, Samsung, Asus...)
    One or two monitors? It looks like many (mid-grade) wide gamut monitors do a lousy job of displaying anything but color managed sites. Is that necessarily true of all the mid-grades? Or can some be used for graphics but as well for routine net surfing, MS Office, etc...? Or am I better off getting two monitors, one for graphics and one for the rest? That would pretty much limit me to 24" or less given my budget (used to using a Dell 21" TN monitor that oddly crapped out just as my new pc was done).
    The more I read reviews the more confusing it gets. There seems to be a difference of opinion even among pros on whether to go wide gamut or stick with an easier sRGB. Realizing a standard gamut monitor would be cheaper, I do want to make the right decision up front, given my budget.
    The one thing I have found astounding is that there is nowhere to actually see many of the monitors I am considering. We live in Nashville TN but my wife is from Atlanta Ga so we drove there a few weeks ago to visit family and for me to visit monitor shops. Even the largest ones there (Fry's and Microcenter) had minimal IPS monitors, a few Dells and HP's. The knowledge of their sales folks was so poor I finally gave up. Felt bad about this until I posted this on another board and got a reply from a guy in LA (second largest city in the US) that he wanted to see a particular monitor and there was no place even there to do so.
    Anyhow, here is what I have considered:
    24" Wide Gamut: Dell U2410 and Asus PA246Q. Dells appear to be good IF you get a good one. The Asus appears to be a clone of the Dell that gets a lot of good press.
    27" Wide Gamut: Dell U2711 that also gets a ton of good reviews
    24: Standard Gamut: Dell U2412 and HP ZR2440.
    27" Standard Gamut: Samsung S27A850D and Apple Cinema- The Samsung uses PLS technology versus IPS while the Apple is a glossy screen that will work with a pc.
    Sorry for the long post. Any comments are greatly appreciated.

    Not trying to talk you out of setting up a 10 bit pipeline, but it's still not very mature, and it really isn't a necessity to get a good editing experience.
    Personally I find advantage in using two 4:3 ratio monitors for Photoshop work.  All my panels are on the right monitor, while pretty much the entire left one shows the Photoshop main window and the working canvas space.  My desktop is 3200 x 1200 pixels overall, and I find having the panels remain visible all the time is important.
    Regarding whether a wide gamut is important...  Will you be printing to devices that deliver a wide gamut?  What other things will you be doing with your system?
    It's not a no-brainer whether a wider gamut monitor is always "better" for everything, since it can accentuate the differences between the output from color-managed and non-color-managed applications, and it's definitely true that not everything is color-managed.  With a monitor that's close to sRGB, for example, you might find Internet Explorer output acceptable, while using a wide gamut monitor will result in garishly oversaturated IE displays.  On the other hand, FireFox (with a settings tweak) seems to get color management right, so there is an alternative.
    I think, as John has implied above, you should work to get your head completely around how color-management works, soup to nuts.  If you don't, there will always be things that are a mystery or which surprise you at the wrong times.  Being able to order a print and have it come back with the expected color can be very important, as you might imagine.

  • Organism: extensible outliner+personal organizer (needs beta testers)

    Organism is basically a simple outliner structured in a very modular way: the core is written in Python 2 (but should be easily adaptable to Python 3) and provides the backend for interacting with sqlite databases, where the data is stored.
    The core also provides an API that can be used by 3 kinds of addons: extensions, interfaces and plugins.
    Extensions are meant to extend core functionalities, and provide their own API: they can directly query the databases.
    Interfaces are the addons that let the user directly interact with core's and extensions' API: currently only a wxPython interface is implemented. Interfaces cannot directly query the databases, they must make calls to the core or the extensions.
    Plugins are for interfaces what extensions are for the core: they extend interface functionalities and cannot directly query the databases.
    The various addons are currently distributed with 3 components (installation packages, but I decided not to use the word "package" since it conflicts with Python packages):
    * the "main" component provides the core, a copy/paste extension, the wxPython interface and some basic plugins.
    * the "organizer" component provides extensions and plugins that let the user define time scheduling rules for each database entry; alarms are raised when events take place, and they can be snoozed or dismissed, like the average calendar application.
    * the "development" component provides some tools for developers and beta testers (currently only "print database tables" and "populate database")
    Organism and its addons are released under GPLv3.
    AUR PACKAGES
    * organism: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=54620
    * organism-organizer: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=54622
    * organism-development: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=54621
    SCREENSHOTS
    * http://www.dariogiovannetti.net/files/organism01.png
    * http://www.dariogiovannetti.net/files/organism02.png
    CURRENT KNOWN LIMITATIONS
    * At the current state, plugins can add their own items to the interface's main menu, but by default they just append them at the bottom of the main entries, so the user needs to customize them in Organism's configuration file, which is located in ~/.config/organism/organism.conf. The location of the configuration file can be changed with the --config flag, all the available options are shown with the --help flag.
    * Once you create a database, the current addon configuration is stored in it, so you won't be able to open it with a different combination of addons: this is done to prevent data corruption, since an extension may add some particular data that needs updating, and if the database is opened without that extension it may get corrupted. Of course The next release of Organism will give the ability to "update" the databases to support the new versions of the addons.
    * At the moment only 3 schedule rules are implemented, but they are fairly easy to write and can be requested specifically.
    * This post is currently by far the best piece of documentation about Organism (except the source itself), I'll try to catch up on that too ^^
    * The next goal is releasing a stable 1.0.0 version, which means that only the most essential features are implemented, there's much room for improvement!
    DEPENDENCIES
    Beside wxpython, needed until the current interface is the only one available, Organism depends on 4 external Python modules I wrote during its development:
    * python2-plural: a little module that returns the needed form of a string depending on one or more input variables.
    * python2-loggingext: an extension to the logging module that lets the logger use different formatters for different log message levels.
    * python2-texthistory: a simple undo/redo engine for plain text and wx.TextCtrl.
    * python2-configfile: a class useful for dynamically parsing and writing configuration files, with support for subsections and more.
    python2-texthistory and python2-configfile may even be tested separately, if somebody is interested in using them for other projects.
    BETA TESTING
    Organism is in pre-beta, which means that I'm still accepting minor feature requests before going beta and starting the real testing campaign: that's why I'm looking for people interested in the project who want to help testing it.
    Beta testers should concentrate in particular in these fields:
    * defects in reading/writing the configuration file
    * defects in the database's undo/redo engine
    * defects in item text editor's undo/redo engine
    * defects in the organizer's management of timed item occurrences
    Of course bugs can happen everywhere, they can be reported at https://github.com/kynikos/organism/issues and https://github.com/kynikos/organism-organizer/issues
    Beta testers should use organism either by setting the logging level to "33" in the configuration file or by launching it with "--loglevel 33".
    ARTISTIC CONTRIBUTIONS
    I'm also looking for somebody intersted in an artistic collaboration for creating an original icon, since currently Organism is using GTK theme icons only.
    Thanks for reading

  • I need some testers for 915resolution-static... [I have them thanks]

    I added another Intel chipset (945GME) to 915resolution-static and in the process I did some refactoring of the patch. The only machine I have to test on here is a GMA500 (Poulsbo -- POS) and that works fine. I'd like to have a few testers on the other chipsets to make sure that the package works correctly before I upload it to AUR. If you're willing to help, just let me know here and I'll e-mail you the PKGBUILD and supporting files.

    brianhanna wrote:I have a 945GM and I'm willing to help but curious why I'd need 915resolution.  For a long time now, the intel drivers auto-detect my screen resolution with no problem.  I haven't needed 915resolution in a couple years now.
    That's a fantastic question. I honestly don't know why anyone that doesn't suffer from a Poulsbo chip (like me) needs this software. I was under the impression that pretty much everything else worked already.
    Anyway, thanks for your offer but I don't think that I'll be needing it. The main thing that I'm trying to do is see if I made a system destroying mess out of my patch refactoring. There are currently a few people trying and I haven't trashed anyone's systems yet.

  • Do I need 8 cores for Photoshop??

    I only do print design using CS4, no video, no web... would having an 8 core machine make much a difference for me over a quad? As far as I know CS4 wouldn't take advantage of the 8 cores anyway...
    Any thoughts?

    I disagree with other posters' comments that Photoshop does not use all 8 cores. I have Photoshop CS3 and had no trouble applying a Gaussian Blur filter to a large image and generating 560+% CPU usage in Activity Monitor (obviously using all 8 cores in my Mac). If you've enabled the Multiprocessor Extension it WILL use all 8 cores.
    The question becomes whether you use features of Photoshop that take advantage of Multi Processor support and whether the time saved using those features be worth the added cost of an 8 core machine? When I applied the Gaussian Blur filter to a 200+ MB image it only took about 3 seconds for Photoshop to render the effect, if it takes 6 seconds on a 4 core machine does that result in a significant enough increase in speed to make it cost effective for you?

  • Need Better Profiles for HP B9180

    Hi all,
    Like others, I find that my HP Photosmart Pro B9180 produces prints that are 20-30% darker than the image on my calibrated monitor. I am running CS3 on my Mac OSX Leopard system. I am trying to print on HP's Advanced Photo Glossy paper.
    My color settings are along the lines of those recommended by Scott Kelby (Adobe RGB workspace and prolife; and I allow PS CS3 manage colors and not the printer).
    I've experimented with other printer profiles provided by HP, but nothing delivers a good print. Has anyone found a good ICC profile that will work with this printer/paper combination?
    Thanks, in advance, for any help you can offer.
    Best,
    Tracy S.

    Ok, you caught the typo. I actually went back to his book to find the proper page citation to support my statement, until I realized you were having a bit of fun. Just so the record is clear, I have no knowledge as to whether Mr. Kelby is or is not prolife.
    Anyway, on to your advice....
    "You need to calibrate and profile your particular monitor, then use the resulting profile as your MONITOR PROFILE. (DEVICE DEPENDENT.)"
    Did that, as I mentioned in my original post.
    "Finally, your target profile has to be a specifically calibrated profile for the particular combination of paper, ink and printer. (DEVICE DEPENDENT)."
    Yes, that is the essence of my message in which I am asking for assistance in locating a better ICC profile for my printer (HP B9180) and paper (HP Advanced Photo Glossy) combination. The stock ICC profile from HP is generating poor results. Short of printing off target sheets and sending out for a customized profile, I thought I would see if anyone else has tumbled to a better profile. Others have encountered a similar color and tonal shift in their prints using the same set up as me, so someone may be able to point me in the right direction.
    Also, I did review the site to which you directed me. As Mr. Ballard points out:
    "The problems users have with Photoshop, and color managed applications are:
    1) They break the Color Management System CMS, by attempting to turn it off -- when in fact they can't!
    See: Turn Color Management on And Honor my Embedded Profile, Please gballard.net
    2) They have bad profiles...."
    My problem is precisely the one he identifies as point (2) -- I have a bad output device profile and I wish to correct that.
    Anyone out there with a good HP B9180/Advanced Photo Glossy ICC profile out there??
