Need Better Audio from Machine

I upgraded to a new MAC Pro
My audio is coming out of the tiny speaker output from the back of the MAC pro.
Then it is split and going into a small 12 Channel Mackie board.  That board feeds my V6 KRK Speakers
But I get a lot of buzz and hum.  I use headphones sometimes, and I can hear mouse movements and other interfearance.
I had a Kona 3 card - but it doesn't fit in the new box.
Thanks for your advise.
Ppro CS6

These would be the cheaper ones to start and then move up in quality of converters or I/O. Obviously the amount of I/O you require for output decides the best solution.

  • I need better performance from my computer. Could someone point me in the right direction?

I do a lot of video editing for work. I am currently using the Creative Cloud, and the programs I use most frequently are Premiere Pro CS6, Photoshop CS6, and Encore. My issue is that when I am rendering video in Premiere Pro, and most importantly, transcoding in Encore for BluRay discs, I am getting severe lag from my computer. It basically uses the majority of my computer's resources and doesn't allow me to do much else. This means, that I can't do other work while stuff is rendering or transcoding. I had this computer built specifically for video editing and need to know which direction to go in for an upgrade to get some better performance, and allow me to do other work.
For the record, I do have MPE: GPU Acceleration turned ON, and I have 12GBs of RAM alloted for Adobe in Premiere Pro's settings, and 4GBs left for "other".
    Here is my computer:
    - Dell Precision T7600
    - Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit
    - DUAL Intel Xeon CPU E-2620 - 2.0GHz 6-core Processors
    - 16GBs of RAM
    - 256GB SSD as my primary drive. This is where the majority of my work is performed.
    - Three 2TB secondary drives in a RAID5 configuration. This is solely for backing up data after I have worked on it. I don't really use this to work off of.
    - nVidia Quadro 4000 2GB video card
When I am rendering or transcoding, my processor(s) performance fluctuates between 50%-70%, with all 12 cores active and being used. My physical memory is basically ALL used up while this is happening.
Here is where I am at on the issue. I put in a request for more RAM (32GBs), this way I can allot around 25GBs of RAM to the Adobe suite, leaving more than enough to do other things. I was told that this was not the right direction to go in. I was told that since my CPUs are working around 50-70%, it means that my video card isn't pulling enough weight. I was told that the first step in upgrading this machine that we should take, is to replace my 2GB video card with a 4GB video card, and that will fix these performance issues that I am having, not RAM.
This is the first machine that has been built over here for this purpose, so it is a learning process for us. I was hoping someone here could give a little insight to my situation.
    Thanks for any help.

You have a couple of issues with this system:
Slow E5-2620's. You would be much better off with E5-2687W's
Limited memory. 32 GB is around bare minimum for a dual processor system.
Outdated Quadro 4000 card, which is very slow in comparison to newer cards and is generally not used when transcoding.
Far insufficient disk setup. You need way more disks.
A software raid5 carries a lot of overhead.
The crippled BIOS of Dell does not allow overclocking.
The SSD may suffer from severe 'stable state' performance degradation, reducing performance even more.
You would not be the first to leave a Dell in the configuration it came in. If that is the case, you need a lot of tuning to get it to run decently.
Second thing to consider is what source material are you transcoding to what destination format? If you start with AVCHD material and your destination is MPEG2-DVD, the internal workings of PR may look like this:
Convert AVCHD material to an internal intermediate, which is solely CPU bound. No GPU involvement.
Rescale the internal intermediate to DVD dimensions, which is MPE accelerated, so heavy GPU involvement.
Adjust the frame rate from 29.97 to 23.976, which again is MPE accelerated, so GPU bound.
Recode the rescaled and frame-blended internal intermediate to MPEG2-DVD codec, which is again solely CPU bound.
Apply effects to the MPEG2-DVD encoded material, which can be CPU bound for non-accelerated effects and GPU bound for accelerated effects.
Write the end result to disk, which is disk performance related.
If you export AVCHD to H.264-BR the GPU is out of the game altogether, since all transcoding is purely CPU based, assuming there is no frame blending going on. Then all the limitations of the Dell show up, as you noticed.

Is there any way to create a time machine backup to an external hard drive with content already on it?  I have a hard drive that i have used for pictures but when i try to run a backup it says i need to start from a blank drive. Can i get around it?

It would be much better if you had separate drives for the pictures and Time Machine backups.....but, if you want to use the same drive for both purposes, temporarily move the folder with the pictures to another location for safe storage.
Run the Time Machine backup on the hard drive and verify that everything is working correctly. Time Machine will format the disk for you in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as part of the backup process.
Then move the folder with the pictures back to the hard drive with the Time Machine backups.
When you have tested to make sure that everything is working again, then and only then should you delete the folder with pictures from the temporary storage area.
Again....it would be much better to keep Time Machine backups on a drive just for that purpose, and other data on another drive for that purpose. This is clearly one of those times when the fact that you can do something does not mean to imply that you should do it.

  • What kind of audio interface do I need for audio out from MainStage 3?

I have a Yamaha MO8 that I use for playing in the worship band at my church. In the past, I've just directly routed audio from the MO8 through a direct box and into the sound system.
I'm looking to switch my setup and use the Yamaha MO8 as a midi controller in MainStage 3. I have this part working — the problem is getting the audio from my MacBook Pro.
The audio output sounds fine through the MacBook Pro speakers or through headphones plugged into the audio out / headphone jack; however, if I plug the direct box into the MacBook Pro's audio out / headphone jack, the signal the sound system gets is very pretty weak and very distorted.
I'm assuming I need an audio interface between my MacBook Pro and the direct box / sound system. Since it's a 2010 MacBook Pro, I'm assuming my only output option is USB (unless the digital audio out can be used). If that's correct, would something like the Scarlet 2i2 work for me?
    Thanks…

Yes, you'll need some sort of audio interface to get a good signal back to your mixer.
The Scarlet 2i2 would work for you but you may find a few limitations.  I use a MOTU Audio Express and it has the advantage of being a mixer as well, so I can mix in a backup signal from the onboard audio outs of my controller (Kurzweil PC3x) in case MainStage goes down (it happens on rare occasion).  Firewire is my preference so the MOTU checks that box.  I also like that I can connect my MIDI cables to the MOTU and have one cable going into the computer.
If you need this sort of compact redundancy, I would shoot a little higher than the Scarlet.  If you don't feel the need for a backup line and USB works for you, then the Scarlet unit would be an excellent value.

  • I have a MacBook Pro 6.2 and a Samsung HPT5054 HD TV. Can I play a DVD from my Mac to my TV with an adapter and an HDMI cable or do I need an audio cable also?

Can I watch a DVD o my TV from my laptop with an adapter and HDMI cable or do I need an audio cable as well?

A seperate audio cable isn't required for your MBpro model.  It will send audio over the HDMI cable if you use the proper MiniDisplay port to HDMI adapter that supports audio.

  • What do I need to transfer video and audio from my 2009 Macbook to my television?

I want to watch a movie with my family tonight, but the DVD is broken. I was planning on renting the movie online and transferring the video and audio from my Macbook to the television. What cables will I need to accomplish this? Also, does anyone know, were I to use a Windows instead, would transferring the audio be simpler? (And what would I need to do that?)

Try doing it without a cable!
    Use AirDrop, described here:

UPDATE - Oh, sorry, I see the article points out the MacBook is too old for AirDrop.

    Welcome to the discussion area!
When the Time Capsule disk starts to become full, Time Machine will automatically delete the oldest backups first to make room for new backups.
For more details, I think you will get a faster and more informed response if you post in the TIme Machine forum for questions like this. We primarily handle configuration set up and networking questons about the Time Capsule as a hardware device on this forum, but it's possible that someone may see your post and respond from here as well.
Please click the link below and then click the "Refine this list" 'button to see the Time Machine area.

First of all, we are not Adobe.  This is a user to user forum.  We are consumers just like you. And I have arthritis, too, although not severe.
Now let's see if we can help you resolve your problem.
    Where was it purchased from?
Was it downloaded or was a disc purchased?
    What is your operating system?
Is it version Photoshop Elements 13?
Did you use a redemption code to get a serial number?
    Did you sign in/activate?
Did you create an Adobe account?

I should have explained further. The game opens in a new window over to the upper left of my screen, leaving the original page underneath. I tried minimizing it so that I could get to my toolbar and did the View > Zoom > Reset. This has no effect. The lower portion of the game is still not showing. Using other browsers the window or frame of the game is much larger, therefore everything shows.

  • Do I 'need' an audio interface on modern Macs?

    Hi there
Don't think I've posted on here in nearly 10 years but I'd be really glad of some help.
I currently record on a 2003 eMac running 10.3.9 using Garageband 06. I record directly into the audio in via a tube preamp.
I am considering finally upgrading and am weighing up the relative merits of a Mac Mini or an iMac. I am clueless about the technological advances made since I last bought a computer and would appreciate some help. Clearly both those computers will be a quantum leap forward from my eMac.
So, specifically, would I need an audio interface with either of the above computers or is the internal soundcard and audio in sufficient? As stated, I don't currently use a USB or Firewire interface and use the eMacs internal soundcard.
I only record audio and don't use virtual instruments but we have an electronic drum kit knocking about so we may consider using it as a midi trigger at some point. We are an indiepop band so your usual guitar, bass, drums and vocals. I do not expect 'pro' quality as we are a DIY band, hence I've managed for so long with GB. However we've done singles on small indie labels and are releasing an album next year which I'm halfway through recording. I'd just like a bit more power to add some decent reverbs, compression etc to the recordings, but also need to consider how I get audio into the machine in future. I would like to get Logic so that takes some of my budget too. Our songs currently have a maximum of about 10 tracks of audio, I don't envisage going much further than that.
Hopefully that gives you my basic requirements, so any tips would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks a lot
    Leon

The built-in audio-in should yield the same results i would imagine, i've used it before and it' s been fine.  I guess the iMac's etc have a seperate audio-in still?  I know they were stripped from the macbook's (bah!).
But obviously, you really should get an interface if you want to get serious, as not only will it give you better sound quality, but more control on the sound going in (Gain etc.).

  • IMovie audio issues. Fine in timeline, but when rendering to iTunes or Media Browser, audio from certain portions of movie files are heard in places where it shouldn't be !

iMovie 11  audio issues. Fine in timeline, but when rendering to iTunes or Media Browser, audio from certain portions of movie files are heard in places where it shouldn't be !
I have created a project where I have a montage of photos and video clips edited together with music under. Some audio portions of the video files are being muted in some areas and those portions are being heard in another part of the project. This is not for all video clips only certain ones.
The project plays fine in the timeline, but when I render the project thru iTunes or Media Browser, this is when the project goes corrupt.
I tried detaching the Audio from the video clips and this somewhat worked, but the original problem still exists with certain audio still being heard where it's not supposed to be.

    I have a fix - or rather, a workaround.
WARNING: It is lengthy, but still far better than starting a new project from scratch.
I had this same issue and none of my transitions/clips were at custom speeds, nor did I have anything else weird going on. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do within iMovie to fix this, at least there wasn't for me. iMovie is BY FAR the buggiest software I have ever used and if you haven't already spent hours slaving away on a project, you are so much better off using just about anything else to edit your video.
...But let's assume you have already spent many hours working on your project and you don't want to start all over. Well then, you have at least one option.
It's a pain in the neck, but it's infinitely better than restarting your project from scratch.
    This will require:
A software called Soundflower (which is free) and some kind of audio editing software (I use Logic, but really any should work).
1.) You're going to need to export your video with the messed up audio. Typically if you're audio is messing up, you're video is at least usually working just fine (at least it always does for me).
2.) You're going to need to open that video in your audio software and import only the audio. If your software doesn't give you this option, then you're going to need to record the audio from your video using the audio software and Soundflower. You can find tutorials on how to do this, but it's honestly pretty straightforward once you start playing around with you Mac's audio I/O settings. Remember to have your computer's volume all the way up when doing this.
3.) Watch/listen to your video and make notes of where the audio errors occur. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND writing down times too,  as they will be extremely helpful later.
4.) Now were going to rip some working audio from the iMovie project itself. Go back into your iMovie project and only play back audio while in the edit window for this step. Do NOT play your project back in full screen.
This part is key: if you try to play back your project from the beginning the audio will usually still mess up. So, what you're gonna have to do is go back on your edit window timeline right before these errors occur and play that specific clip back while recording this working audio with Soundflower and your audio software. Essentially we're only recording the parts of the audio where these errors occur, so try to do this in order if you can. Try to leave several seconds of audio in before the error - that way we can use it as reference when we construct our new audio track.
5.) Now in your audio software you should have your original error-filled audio track and the new clips that we just captured. This part can be painstaking if you're not familiar with audio editing softwares, but as you'll learn, it's really not that hard.
You're going to look at your original audio track and compare it to your new working audio clips. You should be able to notice where those new clips are supposed to go by looking at the identical (or close to identical) waveform shapes in your original audio track. The two should correspond with one another. If you don't understand what I mean right now, you will when you start playing around with the audio. This is why marking times is very important.
Take your new clips and split them up if you haven't already, that way you can drag them around and edit them separately from one another. Essentially your going to line these new clips up with original and then replace the original parts with new ones.
We need to get this as precise as possible, so start off by getting them as close as you can with your naked eye, and then use a zoom tool to zoom in as much as possible so that you can get them lined up PERFECTLY, or at least extremely close. In some softwares you can just drag these new clips on top of the old track, but most of the time you will need to actually cut out the old piece and replace it with the new one. In doing this, zoom in and make sure that you are NOT cutting out a bigger space than your new clip will fill - otherwise you will have small gaps in your audio.
VERY IMPORTANT: Also make sure that this new audio track starts at the EXACT SAME time as your original - otherwise your new audio will be out of sync.
I know this part can really suck if you're not used to audio editing, but at this point, there is little other choice.
6.) Once you are done with this, export your newly pieced together audio track.
7.) Now open iMovie and create a NEW project. Re-import the video that you exported earlier that has the messed up audio. This might take a while, so just be patient.
8.) Then right click the clip and select "Detach Audio". This will do just that - allowing you to edit the audio separately from the video. Now delete this audio.
9.) Now, import the new, perfect audio track that we just made and make sure that it starts at the start of the project. Make sure it's in sync and that everything works.
Now just export your new video with the working audio and you should be done. Since we have given iMovie the audio with no editing actually being done in iMovie, it does not have to generate its own audio now and you should have absolutely no errors now - unless there is some that you forgot to take out earlier.
    YOU'RE FINALLY DONE!!!
I know this entire process *****, but if you're that far into your project, there is little else that you can do. Now you've learned your lesson:
    DON'T USE IMOVIE EVER AGAIN.
    I hope this helped!

  • Getting audio from macbook to TV

    Hi-
I am connecting my video from macbook to Olevial LCD via VGA, I get picture fine.
I'm using a Mini RCA to connect the audio, from my macbook headphone jack to the tv's audio inputs (not composite, the ones right next to the VGA input on the tv).
However, I still cannot get audio on the TV.
I've gone into audio settings on tv but there is nothing that would help.
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks

When folks try to run speakers directly with a Mac Headphone output, they are often surprised to discover they will will need a small amplifier to run speakers. The sound output level is very low. Great for headphones. Not great for speakers.
If the input on your TV goes directly to the speakers without being amplified, the sound level will be very low. Can you use the red and white RCA inputs? Some users report better results with those, if present.

  • Capturing Audio from DAT

    Hello,
I'm trying to capture audio from a DAT deck (Tascam DA-20) into FCP HD by routing it through my JVC BR-DV600U DV deck (RCA output from DAT, RCA input to DV deck, Firewire into FCP).
The DV deck's input is set to line-in, and the audio is being routed through (audio meters on DV deck mimic those on DAT deck, and I can hear the audio through the headphones jacked into my DV deck).
However, when I try to capture the audio on FCP, I am unsuccessful, prompting the following window from FCP: "Error: Final Cut Pro HD was unable to read the movie file just captured."
Now, I use the same set up I described above to capture footage from my Beta deck into FCP with no problems (route Beta signal through DV deck and firewire it into FCP). This leads me to believe that perhaps the glitch lies within my Capture Presets.
At first, I tried to capture the signal as an Audio-Only DV NTSC 48 Khz/Non-controllable device. After that failed, I tried to create my own capture preset, but am not sure it will make a difference, as the only input choices I am given are DV Audio, Built-In Audio, and None.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Why not capture the audio content outside of FCP, check the sample rate for 48Khz/16-bit, convert if necessary, save as an AIFF file, and then import that resulting sound file into FCP?
Any good audio app, including STP will do captures.
You are probably going to need to do some cleanup on the audio anyway before you use it, so why not just use an audio app to do it beforehand?
Besides, if you have an audio device (PCI card or Firewire device) in your Mac, you can use the S/PDIF port for your connection to the DAT and do a digital transfer when you import.
As I understand the way you are doing it now, you are taking digital content from the DAT, converting it to analog for the connection into your deck, and then re-converting it into digital when you capture it back into FCP.
One big advantage of digital audio (and video) is to avoid generation loss and added noise during transfer if you go D-to-D.
If you don't have an audio card or Firewire A/D audio I/O device with S/PDIF ports in your Mac, then see if you can find a friend who has one and can do the transfer for you. Then he can give you the file on a CD-ROM.
    That's what I'd do.
