Need better Imovie

I have Imovie3 and have been going through the tutorials to learn. Thing is, I printed the pdfs at work so had the tutorials for their more up-to-date software. So I noticed that unlike my version, on this newer one you can change the colour of black frames (ooh) but more important, can compress files to email or upload to the net.
I've been searching, but cannot find how to upgrade to Imovies 4. Do I have to get OS 10.3? I've noticed that Tiger doesn't include Imovies, so how do I get a better version?
Or does anyone know what I do with my movie to make it viewable on the net? I'm presuming OS 10.2 doesn't have Idvd either because I couldn't find it, so I can't burn to a Dvd either. Seems all I can do is put my final movie back on the camera.

And is there no way of getting my current version of Imovie to get files on the net?
... there are zillions of possibilities...- with iM>3 + .mac account it is just "click!", with any other combo, you simply have to convert your iM project into "something and load it up to your webspace provider with "something....-
for converting I highly recommend QTpro (choose any setting you want, codec, res, fps, bitrate, audio codec etc), for uploading you can use your finder or any FTP app, as Fetch....
.. and Sue, clean up your room, while you're in! +@BobK for that line!! ;-))

I need more iMovie '11 project themes.Anyone know where to find some? The 8 project themes that came with iMovie '11 just isn't enough for me,
    MacBook Pro OS X v10.7.5
    thank you

iMovie '11 doesn't provide for 3rd party plug-ins unfortunately. So we are currently able to work only with the themes provided by Apple.
You may be able to find something suitable on the App Store, but these are mainly special effects (for example, "Clips FX for iMovie") that can be used in iMovie projects. However, they are not Themes, as such.

No it does not, as long as you do as follows: (Instructions are copied over from my previous posts on the subject)
How to manually change the Windows HAL:
Use the following command: "expand d:\i386\halacpi.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll"
Whereas: <EM>d:</EM> is your CD-ROM letter, or where you Windows XP Installation resides.
halacpi.dl_ can be any of the following depending on what you want to install:
"Standard PC", Non-ACPI PIC HAL (<EM>Hal.dll</EM>)</LI>
"MPS Uniprocessor PC", Non-ACPI APIC UP HAL (<EM>Halapic.dl_</EM>)</LI>
"MPS Multiprocessor PC", Non-ACPI APIC MP HAL (<EM>Halm
    ps.
    dl_</EM>)</LI>
"Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC", ACPI PIC HAL (<EM>Halacpi.dl_</EM>)</LI>
"ACPI Uniprocessor PC", ACPI APIC UP HAL (<EM>Halaacpi.dl_</EM>)</LI>
"ACPI Multiprocessor PC", ACPI APIC MP HAL (<EM>Halmacpi.dl_</EM>)
    </LI>
Offcourse, the HAL you should change to is Standard PC. You will lose Dual Core or HT support in the process, but I strongly believe it can help. As per above, you can switch back to your previous HAL without reinstalling. You will be most prolably asked for the drivers of your devices, but on my setup, it didn't, as they were already stored in Windows' System Folders.

  • HT1338 I have OS X 10.6.8 on my mac and have just downloaded 10.7.4 (needed for imovie 11) but it will not update.

I have OS X 10.6.8 on my mac and have just downloaded 10.7.4 (needed for imovie 11) but it will not update. What has happened to the downloaded update?

When you downloaded Lion from the Appstore (and paid 29$) you have 10.7.4.
After the download you will find it in the Applications folder: that is the installer ! The installer vanishes when used, thus if you want to make an installer disk (to avoid a later redownload), you should do it before you run this installer. You can use "Lion Diskmaker" for that (use a 8GB USB stick), http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/39701/lion-diskmaker/

  • IMakeFullHD needed for iMovie 11?

With iMovie 09 I use iMakeFullHD for setting the correct 'cliptype' from interlaced to progressive.
Is this stil needed for iMovie 11?

It would appear so. I'm in the process of looking at a lot of footage shot with a Canon HF-S21 6 months ago and it's all showing the combing effect. I'm still new to this, but my research has indicated that iMovie is still miss-reading the data from the camera and treating the 50i footage as 25p which looks really disgusting.
So far the only solution I have found is to import at Large format rather than original size which I am not happy about because I'm loosing resolution.
I'm off to check out iMakeFullHD.

  • What happened to Reunion?  need better options for genealogists, please.

We need better options for genealogists, please.  What happened to Reunion???

apologies for obtuse question.   Reunion is apparently no longer available from App Store.  Family Tree Maker is now available for MAC but  is not getting good reviews.  I have used both.  FYM on PC and then switched to Reunion, because  FTM was not available in 2008 when I got my Mac.
Now I note that Ancestry is in cahoots with FTM so am tempted to switch again  but put off by the poor feedback.
I thought that Reunion was also available for Iphone but not FTM??

  • I need better form options

    Hi,
I made a couple of apex applications, now running in production, but the more we made, the more we found we need better forms, now we input eveything in our apex application with linear forums, like we need to make purchase orders, first let me explain how our current jobs like:
We mainly using excel spreedsheet for everything, we make like, Purchase orders, and others in excel, after we printing out, we have to input those POs to our apex applications(that is my idea), but everytime we only can add one line per time, I viewed the tabular forums , but in the browers, it is not good to use like excel,
I got other ERP systems, and it is very common to use forms inside of it, and like making a new PO, they got tabular forms just like spreedsheets, very good, and you can make a po in it, print it out, and it is also in the database, but now we cannot do that, our form/reporting tool is MS excel,
Any good idea about that, will you make a tabular forms like MS excel in browers, ?? , you know, if you use Google doc, they already made Spreedsheet in the web..
We need better forms, and , better reporting.
    Peter

YOu can look at using a collection to gather multiple rows and then write the collection back out after you are done with the processing..
I believe there are examples up her efor doing that, and I worked with an application to do that too..
Also I believe there are data grids available that could be modified to work with APEX, again, it was talked about here in the forum..
(Correction, here is a link to a javascript "grid" library, free to download even..

  • Imovie is very basic - need better software to be more productive

I have Imovie and I wanted to compress some .avi files. I could not import any .avi files. Then I tried to import a .mov file and it seems that the file was too large so I could not import it. I'm trying to compress these files so I can upload them to utube..myspace...etc. I had to download a converter to convert the .avi to .mov. I want to buy some software that does everything in one tool. I'm looking for something that allows you to export and import different types of movies and export them to different formats. i also want to be able to compress the movies to make them smaller. Can you recommend a good software program. Imovie just seems so basic. I want to be productive and be able to do everything in one tool. i have different types of formats for movies: .avi, .mov, .wmv...etc. I use to have a pc and now I am using a macbook pro but finding it very difficult to use because the programs that come with it are so basic and do not support all file types.

  • Help Needed With iMovie - Thank You

I am working on a project with someone using iMovie. Here are my questions regarding iMovie:
My project involves all stills which i want to animate with pans and zooms.
    1. Most important: what is the optimal size/proportion - - in pixels and in resolution -- for adding stills to iMovie?
    2. I can't find a pan function under the Ken Burns effect, only zoom.
I want to pan along my vertical images, so that the image moves up or down the screen. Is there a way to do this in iMovie? Is it possible to important an image whose height is longer than the screen size and then move the screen view along it within allowable parameters.
    3. Someone told me that i need to work in 640 x 480 format at 72 dpi in order to burn to DVD from iMovie. When i imported images this size, they loaded, then immediately disapppeared. The little screen went white, and so did the clip thumbnail. They did not show while
playing either. Then i figured out that they should be 720 x 480.
Some of these load correctly, and others get cropped in iMovie. The vertically oriented pix that i did not format to 720 have black banding added, which i expected, but are also cropped at top and bottom. How can i avoid this cropping?
Please send replies to me by email at [email protected]
    Thank you for helping me.
    Sincerely,
    Pati McDermott

iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   I don't know what version or OS my friend has and she is the one doing most of the work on this.

in addition to Brie's excellent hints... :
in computer lingo you have TWO terms defining the quality of a picture:
pixels and "dots per inch" (dpi)
pixels is, what you see on your screen.. (get closer.. CLOSER.. there: · << a dot, NO! a pixel...)
printed products also have "pixels".. BUT: in print, they define quality by how many pixels dots fit into one inch.. the more the better... way back in computer history (a few months ago...) a "large" 15 screen with 800x600 pixels had.. < math > ~72 dots per inch.. now, if you set a 20" screen to 800x800 pixel.. you'll get < math > .. ehm, less dots per inch/dpi..
a screen has a DEFINED number of dots pixels.. EVERY video screen displays only 720x480, if it is a giant 30" plasma, or a 25years old 7" b/w tube... (OK, now we have HiDef: they offer more pixel, but again a fixed, defined number of pixels....)
    different in print:
an average flyer has 150 dpi... a blinky magazine (Vogue) has 300dpi... INDEPENDENTLY of the size of the pic... you can make 1200 pixeldots fit into < math > 4 inches... or 10inches..
so, some pic files contain BOTH data: the resolution (pixel) AND the dots needed for print (dpi) ..
    video = fix resolution
    print = variable resolution...
read Brie's comment, but why a higher resolution is useful in video/iMovie..

  • IDVD or do I need better?

I would like some recommendation for a reasonably savvy user needing to create a DVD of grand child's  third year consisting of an hour's worth of miscellaneous movies from Blackberry phones, Youtube downloads and various cameras.  Usually uses full DVD capacity.
    Preamble -
The last one I did I used Adobe Premiere Elements on my Macbook Pro with Mavericks, which  created  a Video_TS folder of four sections.  I then created an ISO image from the folder using Disk Utility and burned the ISO using free download of "Burn".
The resulting DVD burned from ISO presented itself on playing with a menu showing the four sections requiring the user to select the first.  I want a self starting DVD.
Premiere will burn one or more self starting DVDs, but I like to use hard drive files as an intermediary as Premiere takes forever to render the clips for subsequent copies. It also runs my Macbook >700% CPU at >100 degrees C for an hour with fans at full blast.
    Questions are
1 -  would I do better to get ILife 11 from ebay and carry out the whole process from the raw  movie clips using ilife components. (The new imovie with mavericks seems to be a toy and can't cope with 100 clips of that size
2 -  will iDVD 11 burn a self starting DVD from the existing Video_TS folder?
3 - Am I deluding myself and do I really need to replace Premiere with a Professional product from Apple Store?
Apple's deprecation of DVD burning is a worry to me, to whom it is still a novelty!

I wholeheartedly second Klaus1's suggestions and recommendations.
Would like to offer these additional suggestions:
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • I need better performance from my computer. Could someone point me in the right direction?

I do a lot of video editing for work. I am currently using the Creative Cloud, and the programs I use most frequently are Premiere Pro CS6, Photoshop CS6, and Encore. My issue is that when I am rendering video in Premiere Pro, and most importantly, transcoding in Encore for BluRay discs, I am getting severe lag from my computer. It basically uses the majority of my computer's resources and doesn't allow me to do much else. This means, that I can't do other work while stuff is rendering or transcoding. I had this computer built specifically for video editing and need to know which direction to go in for an upgrade to get some better performance, and allow me to do other work.
For the record, I do have MPE: GPU Acceleration turned ON, and I have 12GBs of RAM alloted for Adobe in Premiere Pro's settings, and 4GBs left for "other".
    Here is my computer:
    - Dell Precision T7600
    - Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit
    - DUAL Intel Xeon CPU E-2620 - 2.0GHz 6-core Processors
    - 16GBs of RAM
    - 256GB SSD as my primary drive. This is where the majority of my work is performed.
    - Three 2TB secondary drives in a RAID5 configuration. This is solely for backing up data after I have worked on it. I don't really use this to work off of.
    - nVidia Quadro 4000 2GB video card
When I am rendering or transcoding, my processor(s) performance fluctuates between 50%-70%, with all 12 cores active and being used. My physical memory is basically ALL used up while this is happening.
Here is where I am at on the issue. I put in a request for more RAM (32GBs), this way I can allot around 25GBs of RAM to the Adobe suite, leaving more than enough to do other things. I was told that this was not the right direction to go in. I was told that since my CPUs are working around 50-70%, it means that my video card isn't pulling enough weight. I was told that the first step in upgrading this machine that we should take, is to replace my 2GB video card with a 4GB video card, and that will fix these performance issues that I am having, not RAM.
This is the first machine that has been built over here for this purpose, so it is a learning process for us. I was hoping someone here could give a little insight to my situation.
    Thanks for any help.

You have a couple of issues with this system:
Slow E5-2620's. You would be much better off with E5-2687W's
Limited memory. 32 GB is around bare minimum for a dual processor system.
Outdated Quadro 4000 card, which is very slow in comparison to newer cards and is generally not used when transcoding.
Far insufficient disk setup. You need way more disks.
A software raid5 carries a lot of overhead.
The crippled BIOS of Dell does not allow overclocking.
The SSD may suffer from severe 'stable state' performance degradation, reducing performance even more.
You would not be the first to leave a Dell in the configuration it came in. If that is the case, you need a lot of tuning to get it to run decently.
Second thing to consider is what source material are you transcoding to what destination format? If you start with AVCHD material and your destination is MPEG2-DVD, the internal workings of PR may look like this:
Convert AVCHD material to an internal intermediate, which is solely CPU bound. No GPU involvement.
Rescale the internal intermediate to DVD dimensions, which is MPE accelerated, so heavy GPU involvement.
Adjust the frame rate from 29.97 to 23.976, which again is MPE accelerated, so GPU bound.
Recode the rescaled and frame-blended internal intermediate to MPEG2-DVD codec, which is again solely CPU bound.
Apply effects to the MPEG2-DVD encoded material, which can be CPU bound for non-accelerated effects and GPU bound for accelerated effects.
Write the end result to disk, which is disk performance related.
If you export AVCHD to H.264-BR the GPU is out of the game altogether, since all transcoding is purely CPU based, assuming there is no frame blending going on. Then all the limitations of the Dell show up, as you noticed.

  • How can I reduce the storage needs for iMovie events (raw video)

Good news - After borrowing an 8mm analog camcorder (mine died years ago) and an older digital camcorder (mine doesn't support A/V in) I have been able to set up a "bridge" to convert our old 8mm home videos to digital and import them to iMovie.
Bad news - At 13GB per 8mm tape, plus the Mini DV tapes we also have, getting it all in the computer with room to grow is going to require at least 500GB of space, which I don't have. On hand are 120GB internal (MacBook), 120GB external (Time Machine) and 40GB portable.
After my experience with the 8mm analog camcorder (it died, couldn't buy them anymore, tapes useless) I want to get everything digital in a standard format with backup.
    1) Is there any way to reduce the storage space required for the raw video (Events) without impacting image quality (already mediocre in the tapes converted from analog)?
    2) What's the best way to squeeze an hour of video down to fit on a DVD but still leave the video available for re-import/editing in the future? I'd likely mail the DVDs to my parents house or something to keep them separate.
    Thanks!

    Hi
    You can also use
    Yousendit (google it)
where You can send 200Mb movies
    - You download Your movie to them
    - get an Internet address back ( url - I think it's called )
    - this You copy and send in Your e-mail to those that want's Your movie
    - and now they can get it from same address
If You pay You can send up to 2Gb (if I remember right)
BUT it will take time ! In most of my cases - burn it onto a DVD and send by snail-mail most often are a better solution.

    Hi CypherMike,
I 'm afraid you need to configure your Teaming mode to "Switch Dependent" "Address Hash" ,also the physical switch ports need corresponding configuration .
Specifically, I've seen the following usage scenarios arise where a switch dependent team mode is needed:
Physical servers with heavy inbound AND outbound network load
Virtual Machines that have a network load
greater than the bandwidth capacity of one NIC in the team
In these scenarios, you can configure the NIC team to use one of the "Switch Dependent" team modes by configuring the "Teaming Mode" to either of the following values:
LACP - if your network switch supports the Link Aggregation Control Protocol ( aka., 802.1ax ) for dynamic link aggregation.
Static - if your network switch doesn't support LACP and requires a static link aggregation configuration
Note that when configuring one of these "Switch Dependent" modes, you'll also need to configure your network switch to appropriately handle traffic the network team.
    Please refer to following blog:

    Hope this helps
