Need caring server for Oracle XE

My apologies if this is an inappropriate question or the wrong place to ask it.
I'm a small company that would like to showcase some APEX applications and need a secure and accessible server to be able to do this.
Does anyone have any experience with companies that provide leased dedicated servers that allow installing Oracle XE (or proper 10g) on it ? I've tried one and they were not very helpful. Their server was very instable and sometimes refused to reboot even when no changes had taken place yet ! I'm looking for a minimal spec'ed Linux server that will allow me to (safely) install Oracle. Speed and bandwidth are not critical but should not be too restrictive either. I'm based in the UK so this may restrict the choice of providers. Before anybody asks, I have considered hosting my own web/database server from home but my broadband connection is only 512Kbps here and not fast enough to serve my customers.
Thanks in advance.

  • How to choose a right server for Oracle Database!

    Hi all,
Is there any formular that allows me to find the appropriate server configuration for Oracle database 11g?
    Please help!
    Thank you all.
    Dan.

    Simply put ... no.
Determining the correct server is a dance between hardware vendors (one point of input to be treated with general distrust), internal expertise and experience working with similar systems, and most importantly understanding the behaviour of what you are building.
Here are some sample questions to start the ball rolling.
    1. What operating system expertise does your organization have?
    2. What operating system expertise is readily available in the community from which you hire applicants?
    3. What type of application?
    4. What are up-time expectations?
    5. Requirements for high availability?
    6. Requirements for time to perform a full recovery?
    7. Requirements for security?
    8. Storage footprint (dictates internal storage versus SAN, NAS, or ZFS)
    9. Anticipated growth (3-7 years)
Everyone wants to sell you CPU clock-ticks, more RAM, more IOPS, etc. But the first thing you need to understand is the capabilities you require that are generic: Required of any solution. Only when you have a clear understanding of these factors are you ready to discuss whether the solution is a pizza box or an ODA ... an Exadata or an IBM System Z.
Far too often I find people purchasing RAM they don't need with CPU speeds that exceed the ability of their network infrastructure to move the data so pay special attention when you are ready to make your purchase to engineered systems like the ODA.

  • Need a tool for oracle, like we have in sqlserver profiler....

We have a tool profiler in sqlserver,we need the tool which works like profiler...
    Regards,

You can enable tracing at multiple levels using the DBMS_MONITOR package. The following link shows how to enable session tracing: [Application Tracing Tools|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14211/sqltrace.htm#CHDFCGAE]
You can then use a tool like TKPROF or TRCSESS to aggregate the trace data into more readable files for analysis.

There are a lot of functionality that are in the "grey area".  For example, SAP BI runs perfectly fine as AS-ABAP only but there are some functionality that require AS-JAVA.  Your best bet is to find out what application / functionality you require from SAP, then research to see if what you are after requires AS-ABAP and/or AS-JAVA.

  • Ntp Server for Oracle 11gr2 (oracle clusterware) on HP-UX

we are planning to configure a ntp server on Windows 2003 server for our Oracle 11gr2 RAC (2 nodes) on HP-UX but we have some issues to be clear. Following are the details for our environment.
RAC : Oracle Clusterware (2 nodes)
    Database : 11gr2
    OS: HP-UX B11
Hardware: HP Intergrity Blade Servers BL860c i2
    ntp server : HP Proliant
if our ntp server fails how the both nodes will manage the time?

if our ntp server fails how the both nodes will manage the time?Use NTP insure that all cluster nodes must be synchronized to the same time ,in 9i , 10g and 11gR2 Oracle Clusterware includes the Cluster Time Synchronization Service (CTSS) . On startup Clusterware checks for a NTP configuration, if found, CTSS goes into Observer mode. This means it will monitor the clock synchronization and report in the Oracle Clusterware alert log if it finds a problem. If it does not find a NTP configuration, CTSS will be active .

  • Simple file server accessible remotely with managed access. Do I need ML Server for this?

    Hello,
I have a  Mac Mini that will be dedicated to serving 15 folders of documents to 7 people. It would be great if each person had their own password and I'd like to be able to decide what folders each user will have access to. The people need to be able to access the files from home and on the office network.
Do I NEED to run OS X server for this Or can i accomplish this in OS X?
I have to get this running quickly and I may not have time for the ML Server learning curve (even though it has been simplified).
I tried to get ML server running on my machine a few weeks ago but got stuck. If setting up ML server with JUST the file server is dramatically easier I will try again. Can anyone please suggest a tutorial that takes me through simply setting up a remotely accessible file server with managed access with ML Server?

OS X client can serve files to remote clients, via both SMB/CIFS and AFS; via the Windows and OS X fiel services.  That's cheap, uses hardware you already have, and works fine.
Most NAS boxes don't do distributed authentication.  Typically, you have credentials for the box at most.  Some of the mid- and upper-end boxes do offer distributed authentication, but that means having that authentication around.  At the low end, an Apple Time Capsule is a reasonable NAS box, and you can add an external disk.   And can be used for backups via Time Machine, too.  The mid- and upper-end boxes from Synology have a reputation for capabilities and flexibility.  There are (many) other vendors.
I'm not a huge fan of LogMeIn for various reasons that I won't get into here, but that service does work for accessing hosts.  I don't know if that allows access to NAS directly, but I'd tend to doubt it.  You'd need to check with both LogMeIn and with the specs for whatever NAS box you're using.
Given the choice, I'd use a VPN.
Using a VPN does mean you can control — at the VPN level — who can access your private network, so that can provide a broad-brush form of access control to your NAS device or your OS X client or your OS X Server box, if you go that route.
I don't prefer to openly serve files to the internet, as the underlying protocols have occasionally had security issues and vulnerabilities, and the internet gremlins will find and will poke at any open ports and any accessible file servers.  I prefer to configure these services via VPN.
VPNs are also more involved to set up, where LogMeIn can be simple.
As mentioned previously, I'm also not a huge fan of the host-based VPN servers in OS X, though those do work.  The gateway boxes I've been using in the last year or so are probably not a good choice for a user that isn't familiar with networking  — the boxes provide a user interface that very definitely expect the user to understand IP and routing and related, but is both self-consistent and quite powerful — and they're cheap for what they can do, and they do work nicely.  ZyXEL ZyWALL USG series.  If you are evaluating any of these firewall boxes, then I'd definitely encourage downloading the manuals and making sure you can understand the available information.  The server-grade firewall boxes are almost inherently flexible and thus complex devices.
One of the easiest ways is to work with somebody that does this sort of thing to sort through the options and requirements and trade-offs available here, and potentially to set up your VPN or NAS or server configuration for you.  (Disclosure: I offer this.)

  • Need a server for ...?

My old server (2004) died and I needed another one, so I got a dual Xeon E5620 with 16 GB memory and used disks from the old server. No problem, but ...
I no longer installed Windows Server 2008 but opted for ESXi 5.1
It installed in minutes on a simple USB stick (no boot disk required, I could have installed it on a 2 GB stick but only had a 4 GB stick at hand), the disks were reformatted to VMFS and everything was running in a couple of hours, including the transfer of Active Directory and related stuff. This is a solution that may appeal to others as well. I can now manage my Exchange Server, File Server, Print Server or whatever other virtual server I have from my phone, an internet café or whatever from around the globe. It almost beats Adobe-Anywhere.

You are right Harm, it is amazing
I installed one at work on a big Dell RX720 server and we have already 4 different virtual machines / servers on it, and that's on the free of charge version, which supports up to 32 GB RAM.
By the way Harm, do you know anything about Adobe Anywhere pricing and awaylability?
    Thanks.
    /Ulf

  • Are there any examples that do not require a personal webserver?  I do not need a server for my aps.

Back when Cirrus was Stratus, there was no need for a personal webserver to host a CGI script.
I have no need for a non AS3 server because my server is simply going to be another peer node on the network
It is a professional way to handle things too:
    1) You have a computer with a static IP that computers refer to as the master peer(yes wordplay).
2)If you can't afford a computer with a static IP, you can simply create a peer that responds to requests,"Are you the server?"  Yes, this is easily hackable, but when you're debugging, your friends aren't gonna be jerks.
All I want when I contact Cirrus is:
    1) A list of IP addresses of connected peers.
And if someone has example code:
    2) The ability to send "Hello World" to all peers.
Is this doable in Cirrus?  Stratus could do it.

the only difference between "Stratus" and "Cirrus (codename)" is the name.
Cirrus has never had a "list connected peers" function, nor has it ever reported IP addresses/port numbers of connected peers in ActionScript.
the VideoPhoneLabs example program has always required some kind of external registration service to register a peer ID for a name, and to look up the peer ID for a name.
it's possible to do P2P with Cirrus and no active web server by using RTMFP Groups (NetGroup, GroupSpecifier and friends). i have posted examples from my labs at MAX from years past that implement text chat and other functions using only Cirrus. and you can do P2P with groups on a LAN with no server at all (not even Cirrus).  see this thread:
       http://forums.adobe.com/thread/766959
for links to my lab materials from MAX 2009 and 2010. and come to my session at MAX this year where i'll be covering "Advanced P2P With RTMFP: Tips & Tricks".

you can retrive a blob column just like retriving any other type of column in sql when you retrive the data from the result set use the getByteStream method and then read the returned InputStream
Blob column can be used to store the content of the file and the content do not include the file name. If you want to store the file name you will need another VARCHAR column for that.
