  • T23 with CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo drive problem

I have had my T23 for several years. It came with a DVD/ROM and floppy drive when I purchased it from IBM (not Lenovo). It has served me well but I needed a RW drive, so over Christmas I purchased a new ultrabay 2000 CD-RW/DVD Combo (p/n 22P6991) in the States. The drive can be seen from My Computer, Windows Explorer and Device Manager.
I copied one image (23kb jpeg) from my PC to the drive using Windows Recording Software and it worked. I then tried to move a folder with about 10 jpeg images to the same CD-RW. The images disappeared from the C:/ drive and sit in a virtual storage area (I assume) waiting to be transferred. The CD-RW with one jpeg on it is in the drive and I get a message from the windows writing wizard informing me that there is no disc in the drive. The disc is no longer recognized.
I browsed the forum and found a reference to DLA. I do not have any Sonic DLA software installed. In searching Support and Downloads on the Lenovo Site I see an upgrade to dla521 build 01c (dla521b01u.exe)  for 22P6991. As I do not have the base software to upgrade, how do I get the base software?  Apparently it is shipped in IBMTools/apps if the device came with the PC.
I may even be chasing the wrong solution here. Can anyone point me in the right direction?  Sure would appreciate it.
    My system:   T23 Notebook  2647-8RU   512RAM  40G HD   CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo (Ultrabay 2000)
    T23: 2647-8RU, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
    A61E: 6418-12U, W7/Pro 64
    X200: 7454-CTO, W7/Pro 32
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thank you for your response, I very much appreciate it.  I have DeepBurner installed. I assume it to be much the same as Easy CD Creator and Nero... though Nero is huge!  I did select multisession on before I did the first copy.
As an aside, I have noticed that there is no format command for the CD (I am using brand new CD-RW discs). Using the CDs right out of the box rendered the file system as CDFS after I wrote the first file to the disc using Windows CD Record. The disc is now unusable.
For DLA ... I did some web searching and found that the CD-RW/DVD combo comes with  file   q1dla1us13.exe . It is not on the Lenovo download site. I did not get a CD installation disc with my purchase. Lenovo phone support tells me to buy DLA.
Update:   I have given up on DLA. I downloaded CDBurnerXP and used it.  It was simple to use and it did the job. My concern about not being able to format the drive prior to using it was not an issue afterall.
Thank you for taking the time to help me.

  • Change combo drive for superdrive

How can you change a combo drive for a superdrive and where can I buy a superdrive? Can it be done without technical know-how or special tools?

    Welcome to the discussions, Binkie.
Changing the optical drive in a 12" PowerBook is quite a challenging procedure.
It basically involves completely dismantling the PowerBook, taking out the keyboard, hard dive, modem, heat sink, fan, DC-to-DC Board, and logic board (as well as the case and numerous cables, supports and screws) in order to reach the combo drive. Then it all has to be put back together again, in the correct order.
    Here's a guide to the process: http://www.pbfixit.com/Guide/53.18.1.html
I'm just posting it to show how difficult it is, not to encourage you to do it. It will void your warranty, and with such a complex procedure, it's very, very easy for something to go wrong. I wouldn't even consider doing it unless I was very confident with successfully tinkering inside expensive electronic equipment.
The drive itself can be bought here: http://www.pbfixit.com/cart/catalog/product919_G4_Aluminum_12_4xSuperDrive.html for $299.95.
Personally, I'd say you'd probably be much better off buying an external FireWire DVD writer. Not only will you save yourself the significant trouble of the internal procedure, you'll also be able to get a faster drive with better features (dual layer, -/+ support, etc) at a cheaper price.
If you do use a FireWire drive, you'll need to use the freeware Patch Burn software to use it with Apple's applications (the Finder, iTunes, iDVD etc.). Toast will automatically recognise an external FW drive without trouble.
Check out Accelerate Your Mac's excellent Drive Compatibility Database if you want to see other user's experience with specific brands and models of DVD writers.

  • T42 DVD/CDRW Combo drive not reading CDs. System Folder Icon changes. XP Pro SP2.

Device manager shows correctly 'Ma**bleep**a UJDA755zDVD/CDRW'.
System Folder icon shows 'DVD/CD-RW Drive (D'
If I insert a CD, the System Folder icon changes to 'CD-ROM' and displays 'Please insert a disk into drive D:'
If I insert a DVD, the System Folder icon changes to 'DVD-ROM' and displays 'Please insert a disk into drive D:'
Am able to burn a CD, but as shown above cannot read. Disabling the drive in device manager, rebooting and re-enabling will make drive read once, rebooting again and it cannot read.
Using RegEdit to remove LowerLimit and UpperLimit does not help.
Have updated drive to latest firmware and run (to no avail) Microsoft AutoRun fix.
Drive works flawlessly  under Ubuntu 8.04.1, seems to be an XPP registry issue, but where?
Lost at this point, would appreciate any pointers...

I am having the exact same issue with a brand new T400.  When I insert a CD or DVD into the drive, no spin up occurs.  When I double click on the DVD-ROM/CD drive in My Computer, Windows tells me to insert a disc.
I've disabled the Automatic Power Savings for the optical drive.  I've also installed the latest firmware and made the regedit changes suggested by Microsoft (UpperFilter/LowerFilter).
I can't determine whether this is a software bug or hardware failure.  Does anyone have any insight?

Do I need to use all the hard drive for time machine or can I partition it

You cannot partition a TC disk.
See pondini about mixing data and backups.. but remember this.. the TC has no way to back itself up and TM cannot backup files on the TC. Anything not backed up on the TC will be lost at some future point.

If you have specific questions, maybe I can answer, but remember I don't have access to any Windows newer than XP. I think setup will be similar, but I don't know if the Windows-side software will be compatible with W7 or W8.

  • Do i need to buy the same hard driver for my iMac or i can buy any hard driver 3.5?

Do i need to buy the same hard driver for my iMac or i can buy any hard driver 3.5?

You can buy any 3'5" SATA hard drive for the iMac. You can buy a hard drive at OWC.
Note that Late 2009 and newer iMacs have the temperature sensor inside the hard drive, so it's important to get one with that sensor. In this case, I recommend you to take your computer to an Apple Store or reseller and get your hard disk replaced

  • Driver for 40Y8686 CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo II Drive

For the life of me, I cannot find this driver for download from the web site.  Any pointers would be GREATLY appreciated!

My Dvd drive cames without and AC Power adapter, it suppose that only needs one USB 2.0 port (no external power adapter is required for read/write operations when it is connected to a single USB 2.0 port on ThinkPad notebooks, the drive can be powered directly through the USB cable whe it´s connected to a USB 2.0 port, and optional 5V AC adapter can be used fir USB 1.0 or 1.1). My notebook its a lenovo x201, its compatible?. I need to buy and AC Power adapter?
Thank you very much for your help.

  • EMac Combo drive for a DVD burner ( superdrive)

Hi . I have purchased a used eMac 1 ghz . it has a stock combo drive . i burn a lot of DVDs .I have a external plextor DVD burner ( super drive ) and i was woundering if it would fit in the eMac ? do i need to remove the little bezel at the end of the tray ? I have always owned a older Slower G3 type mac , this will be my fastest mac i would ever have . So i want to be happy with it .
    Thank you kindly

I guess burning to external is not so bad . i have been haveing problems when OSX tryed to verifi the burn and it fails so i though putting it into the computer would resolve that . I will keep the burner in the external case if it means i have to take the top off the optical drive itself .

  • Need DVD/ CD-RW Driver for Z60m

    Hello,
My laptop has the dvd/ cd-rw but in the system / hardware screen, it show dvd / cd rom.  My laptop us to be able to burn pictures, files, etc to blank cd, but not I can not.  I try to uninstall the hardware and let the add hardware wizard detect the correct one but it can not.  It keep install the HL-DT ST DVDRAM GMA- 4082N.
I 've tried to find the correct drivers for this but unsuccessful.
    Please help.
    Thank you.

The "driver" for the optical drive is part of the Windows OS. You will not find that on the Lenovo website. If reseating the optical drive doesn't fix your problem, check the device manager to see if the DVD/CD device has a yellow triangle with an exclamation point just to the left of it. If you are seeing this yellow triangle next to your DVD/CD device, you can go to Microsoft's website and run the following "FixIT" utility:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
You'll be prompted to reboot your unit once you run this utility.
Let me know if this helps you.

  • Is Sony CRX170E the original "Combo Drive" for MDD?

    Hello all,
Last week I bought on eBay a used Power Mac G4 "Mirrored Drive Doors" 867 DP model, which arrived today. Unfortunately, the optical drive in the computer is apparently unable to recognize or read DVD discs, even though the specifications for this model indicate that the included optical drive is supposed to be a "Combo Drive" that reads DVDs as well as reading and writing CDs. I'm trying to determine whether the optical drive in this particular computer is original equipment, whether it is supposed to be able to read DVDs, whether it is malfunctioning, and whether I have reason to complain to the seller of the item.
The drive recognizes and reads a previously-burned CD-R just fine, but refuses to recognize either of two original Apple DVD-ROM discs that I've tested it with. System Profiler indicates that the drive is a Sony model CRX170E. Searching the Web, I've found that this model is indeed an OEM drive manufactured for Apple by Sony, but I haven't been able to determine conclusively the answers to the following questions:
    (1) Is the Sony CRX170E the drive that was originally installed in this Mac model? (If not, then I'll need to ask the seller to explain how it got in there.)
    (2) Is the Sony CRX170E in fact a Combo Drive, which should be able to read DVDs, or is it just a CD-only drive? (If it's a Combo Drive, then I'll have to troubleshoot its failure to recognize DVDs.)
Any help you could provide in answering these questions would be much appreciated.
For the record, here's a link to the eBay auction for this computer (including the item description, which clearly states that it comes with a Combo Drive, and that there are no hardware problems with the computer):
And here are links to the specs for this computer model, at EveryMac and Apple, respectively:
    Thanks,
    ~ Justin

Here are the details for the drive as displayed in System Profiler:
    *SONY CD-RW CRX170E:*
    Manufacturer: SONY
    Model: SONY CD-RW CRX170E
    Revision: 2.2d
    Drive Type: CD-RW
    Disc Burning: Apple Supported/Shipped
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: No
    Protocol: ATAPI
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal
As for Mac OS X version, I'm accustomed to using 10.4 on the Mac I'm replacing, but this "new" MDD came with a clean install of 10.3 on it. The problem reading DVDs first became apparent when I attempted (unsuccessfully) to read or boot from my 10.4 installation DVD on the "new" machine.
And yes, a replacement drive is always an option, but it would cost me about five thousand "pennies", which is an expense that shouldn't be necessary as I bought this computer with the understanding that it would be able to read DVDs as-is.

  • Can I swap out my Combo drive for a Super drive?

    Hey guys,
I have 1GHz G4 iMac Dual USB & was wondering if I could replace the Combo Drive with a "Super" Drive.
    Any ideas?

    Ben,
You can do it, but do you really want to? I think an external is a better option. Having two DVD drives is a huge advantage. It makes copying DVDs a snap.
Here's the link to how to change the drive. It will give you a look at what your in for if you attempt it.
