Need clarity on FAT vs NTFS

I've looked through here, in the manual and Apple's KB article, but nothing seems to address my question. I'm trying to keep this post as concise as possible.
I have 2 MBPs to set up and trying to figure out the best route to go. When working on-site, I need both to be in PC/Boot Camp mode running XP2 and they will be used for PowerPoint 2003 & CS3 Photoshop. When not working, I will run one in OS X and use Parallels for any occasional PC use on that particular Mac.
So....if the Windows side is NTFS, and I downloaded a file in Mail on the Mac side, do I understand correctly that I will not be able to move or copy the file to the Windows side, even though I can do that now (from Tiger) over a network to an NTFS drive? Is this an OS limitation within the Mac & Leopard?
Under normal circumstances working at home, I would be using one MBP in Mac mode, and the other in PC mode. Would I still be able to copy files over the network to the Mac in PC mode if it were NTFS?
32G doesn't seem like much on the Windows side, especially since my current PC is using 30.5 GB out of 52 GB right now. I was hoping to use at least 70 GB. It sounds as if I go the NTFS route, I just won't be able to copy files to the PC side when running Parallels.
Thank you!

I'm speaking strictly for local drives (internal, USB, memory stick, etc), to include bootcamp partitions. (when you are booted to OSX, the bootcamp partition will appear on the desktop as a normal HD. If it is NTFS, it has a padlock on it) You can open the drive and copy from it.
read/write to a network drive is a different process; different rules apply.
As long as your network account has correct permission to the share (on the NTFS drive) you can write to it.
I wouldn't call it a limitation, just a different set of standards used by Apple and MS. Each standard has it good and bad points.

Reinstall MacFuse with the one from http://www.tuxera.com/mac/macfuse-core-10.5-2.1.9.dmg. If that doesn't work, you can use Paragon NTFS for Mac 9.0 which has been designed to work with Lion.

  • Boot camp FAT or NTFS

When installing boot camp, which one should I use, FAT or NTFS? I am planning to give windows xp 25Gb of space. Isn't there an advantage to one of them?

thanks for the reply. Now I have installed boot camp
and everything seems to be working fine. The only
thing I've noticed so far is that the volume controls
(F3, F4, F5)don't seems to work and there is no
right-click functionality. I can deal without the
volume control but it seems like it would be pretty
hard to use the xp partition without the ability to
right-click. Does anyone know how to add a
right-click functionality or did I not do something
    right?
Try out the app below. It will remap the keyboard so you can control the backlight, volume, add a delete key, etc. Very handy program.

    hi
    i m new in solaris
is it possible to access my windows file system in solaris.
file systems are FAT and NTFS.
    regards

You should be able to mount FAT filesystems as type pcfs.
Theres no native support for NTFS, but I seem to remember a project working on that.
So google for solaris NTFS will probably find it..

  • Copying to Hardrive from Mac and also using Windows - which FAT or NTFS?

I and struggling with what do as best backup solution for both Docs, Music and most inportantly Photos.  I have just copied each event from iPhoto onto a memory stick which is formated as MS-DOS (FAT 32).  I have got Paragon NTFS for MAC OS X  9.5 software running.  Now my question is - should I need to view these photos (on the memory stick) via a Windows PC - can I?  Also, if I want to download to a Windows PC can I?  and ... if I want to add to the exisitng folders on the memeory stick via a Windows PC can I?  I have no idea what I am doing....??  I formatted the memory stick before I copied over 14GB - and all the photos appear to be there when viewing on Mac.  Should I have formatted to NTFS ?  Hope someone can be patient enough to explain to me. Many thanks.

    Yes, shouldn't be a problem.
Music files should be in platform independent formats like .mp3.
Other documents - depends what programme they were made with in the first place. MS Office should work OK in the Windows or Mac versions.
iWork Pages should be exported to Office Word on the Mac before transferring, likewise with Numbers to Excel.
Depending on the original application, you may occasionally see a 'ghost' file when a Mac originated file is viewed in Windows. This is nothing to worry about, it's just the Resource Fork of the main file, which Windows doesn't understand. If any appear, just trash them.
Make sure all files transferred to Windows have the relevant file extensions showing (.doc, .xcl, .mp3 etc) so Windows knows what to open them with.

  • Focus problem - Need clarity

    iphoto 8 ver 7.0.2
Love the new tools however every image has to be sharpened. Compared non-adjusted images in Photoshop where they are clear.
Did Apple forget to put a "0" in the center as in the exposure and contrast buttons? Seems to me that when it is set to .5 pictures then compare with those in photoshop for clarity. Will apple fix this soon?
    Cnd-Tom

With sharpness. No, not unless the photographer messed up and I do have a bunch of those. But if the original is sharp, it looks sharp and prints sharp.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • BODS : Datastore options for SAP R/3 - need clarity for use

    Hi All.
Another request to understand the datastore optiono n BOXI 3.1 BODS existing installation.
We are trying to pull a new table from SAP R/3 into BODS and we find that ABAP program is not getting generated as expected. And terminates. When we tested a simple workflow.
While creating a new datastore for SAP R/3 Source :
    When we look at the datastore we find the following options for R3 Source ;
    ABAP Execution option :
    Execute preloaded
    Generate and execute
    Under data transfer method we find ;
    Shared directory
    Direct download
    FTP
    Custom transfer
Then we have working directory on sap server
    local directory
    generated ABAP Directory
Am testing a simple workflow of pulling data from SAP R/3 in a dev machine.
    But am not understanding.
which option of ABAP Execution, and data transfer , path would work in co-ordination.
Because when i say direct download and say generate and execute it throws error.
Can anyone help me with combinations of the options to choose for a R/3 source. And the implications thereof.
I had created a folder under local bods server D:\Bodi. And given the path for data transfer.
But the files are not getting generated for whatsoever reasons.
Any advise on this would be helpful.
Also found a bit unusual, that there was no button to test the connection to be correct or not, a TEST connection button is not there. Which i felt, could be included.
Note : on the existing production system, we have chosen execute preloaded; shared directory on sap server. and shared that folder path for the user and given full rights. But while we try to do the same on the dev machine a test before transporting on production, a simple workflow does not work.
would like to know what settings on sap server, really affect the data store options on the BODS
    thanks

Indeed, BODS <> SAP connectivity can be tricky.
For a development environment, I suggest you select the option "Generate and execute" for your "ABAP Execution Option." What this means is that DS will create, on the fly, small-ish ABAP programs. These ABAP programs will be written, in plain text, to a local directory on the DS job server, in the folder specified in "Generated ABAP Directory".  You can see them in there after an attempted job execution, assuming the job involves the creation of an ABAP program.  The ABAP program name is specified in the properties of an ABAP data flow, under Options > ABAP Program Name.  If you can't, perhaps the DS job server process doesn't have full rights to that folder - ?  After being generated on-the-fly, they'll be transferred to SAP to execute.  The SAP user you use to connect to SAP must have sufficient rights to upload-and-execute these ABAP programs, and that's a fairly substantial set of rights. What's required is documented in the BODS supplement for SAP. Often, to get things running, your friendly local Basis admin will grant SAP_ALL to the DS user, to see what rights are being invoked.
Once all that jazz is working, you need to get the data back. There are a number of ways to do this. The method of data transfer is specified in "Data transfer method," where, ignoring "Custom transfer," you have three choices:
    1) Direct Download: easiest and slowest.  This method tells SAP to attempt to stick data in the client-side folder specified in "Local directory." Try this first.
    2) Shared folder: This is recommended when you have SAP being hosted on a Windows box. Basically: you set "Working directory on SAP Server" and "Data Services path to the shared directory" to point to the same folder.  SAP uses the "Working directory on SAP Server" to find this folder, and DS uses the other setting. So, for instance, if you were going to use the Shared folder method, you could set "Working directory on SAP Server" to "E:\BODS_Transfer", and, assuming E:\BODS_Transfer was shared-out as "BODS_Transfer", you could set "Data Services path to the shared directory" to
dev12.somecompany.com\BODS_Transfer .  Then, you'd need to setup all the relevant security, as both SAP and DS need rights to read and write files in this folder.
    3) FTP (this is the method I usually use): SAP writes the "transport files" you're after (i.e., the data) in the folder specified in "Working directory on SAP Server". Then, you need to establish ftp connectivity to that folder from the DS job server's perspective, which you do by entering the ftp host name and the path to that folder in "FTP host name" and "FTP relative path to the SAP working directory".  In my opinion, the "relative" business is a little confusing, and I just typically enter the full ftp path, beginning the path w/ a forward slash, like "/usr/sap/tmp/BOBJ" or something like that.  You also need to obtain a separate username and password for the ftp connectivity. Note that this name and password has NOTHING to do with the SAP username and password; you're just setting-up DS to act as an ftp client. I strongly encourage you to test ftp connectivity by using a regular ftp client from the DS job server and attempt to connect to your ftp host using the username and password you were given, and attempting to fetch some sample test file. If you can't do this, manually, then DS won't be able to do it, either.
    Best wishes,

  • Need clarity on data federator workarounds for BW as mentioned in threads

    Hi Experts,
We checked a related thread with (Re: Restricted key figures from a Data Federator Universe), with Ingo Hilgefort's reply that we can create filtered measures on universe level, but in our scenario it is not working, since in the generated SQL, all the where conditions created for filtered measures are getting combined with AND operator, and hence not producing any report.
For eg, if we are creating two different filtered measures for sales in US, and sales in UK, the generated SQL will combine the conditions as below:
select sales, sales from <tbl name>
where country = "US" AND country = "UK"
which definitely wouldn't produce any result, since country can be either US or UK, not both for any record.
We need to know how to proceed with this scenario.... will it be by creating aliases for fact table and using different contexts, writing subqueries in custom SQL, or any other workaround...?
Guidance on the same is needed urgently. Please share your experience and thoughts regarding the same.
    Regards,
    Suzane

You can do a DB Connect to MySQL DataBase. What is the OS and DB of your BW app server and OS for My SQL.
refer: http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/EN/58/54f9c1562d104c9465dabd816f3f24/frameset.htm for list of supported DB's
If you want to automate the flat file, than write a SQL procedure to generate a CSV file daily from the DB.
Use OS command in the process chain to copy file to the BW server
Next perform data load in process chain.

  • AS2 Sender Adapter -- Need clarity.. Very Very Urgent...!!!

    Hi AS2 experts,
    Regarding AS2 sender adapter:
    We will provide the details
    TP:  HTTP
    MP:  AS2
    *Message Subject = **
    1. Can anyone please clarify what is this message subject ??
Its the incoming file name we need to provide?
    According to few blogs,
    2. We will be providing the below URl to the partner system to send there messages.
Consider im having partner systems A,B,C .
and we will be creating 3 communication channels(CC1 ,CC2 ,CC3) to three partner systems.
If i provide same URL to all the three partner systems.
Then how it will differentiate like which file is belongs to which interface (from which partner it is coming)?
And im not providing anything specific in all the AS2 sender comunication channels to differentiate these files.
What is this AS2ID which we will provide in Party Configuration.
WIll it makes any difference to above problem?
Kindly suggest me if anyone has idea about this asap.
    Its Very very urgent.
    ThankYou.

I guess yes . you need to provide this URI.
    >>>>>2.Is it possible to do content based routing by using Message Subject?
yes it is possible to determine the receiver depending upon ur condition. Please provide the context object at design time and at the time of Configuration , using XPATH you can determine conditional receiver.

  • Fats 32  ntfs how can i change it on the time caps with win7

when i bougth my time caps. i was able to partition it to a fat32
but now i want it to be a ntfs drive. i can't seem to find an option to change this

It is not possible to partition a Time Capsule.
You might be seeing some virtual drive software created on the TC but you have not actually partitioned it.. easy to tell btw. open the airport utility on any computer.. Mac or PC.. all partitions will be listed. If it is listed as data then you have something different going on..
You can partition a USB drive plugged into a TC.. but you cannot use NTFS anyway.. the TC internal drive is formatted HFS+ now and forever more.. a USB drive can be FAT16 FAT32 or HFS+.. nothing else is recognised.
Over the network.. the PC will see the share as NT server so perhaps FAT32.
PC over the network will not be able to tell what actual format is on the drive and nor will it care.
But you may have large file limitation.. that is windows issue. It has nothing to do with the TC.

  • Need clarity on MPLS and the various MTUs

    Hi All,
    I'd like some clarification on MTUs and how they are affected by MPLS. This is my current understanding of a standard IP over Ethernet frame;
    Ethernet MTU = 1514
    IP MTU = 1500
    TCP MSS = 1460
    1. If this is correct what happens to the above sizes when MPLS adds one label?
    2. Next what happens when MPLS adds a second label for VPN/VFR?
    3. Do you have to re-configure switches along the path to accomodate larger Ethernet frames?
    4. Also how do the above sizes relate to the MPLS MTU and how will it change depending on one or two labels ?
    Next what happens when you try to run MPLS over GRE which I understand has the following characteristics;
Ethernet MTU = 1490 (inside the tunnel)
    IP MTU = 1476
    TCP MSS = 1436
    5. Since you cannot adjust the Ethernet MTU of a Tunnel, as it's dependant on it's carrier interface, what adjustments will be needed in the above to make it work with one or two labels.
    6. Last question, the ip tcp adjust-mss can be used to reduce fragmentation of tcp packets in the above environments. Will it work if applied to the PE (Ethernet)interface linking to a P. In other words will the MSS adjustment occur before label switching.
    7. In the question above will ip tcp adjust-mss work in both directions e.g. ingress & egress of the MPLS?
If anyone can clarify the above related concepts I would greatly appreciaate it.
    Thanks,
    Roman.

1- Correct. Assuming you configure "mpls mtu xx", where xx is greater than 1500 (1524 would allow for 6 labels), the ethernet frame would be 4 bytes more.
2- The ethernet frame would be 8 more bytes (4 bytes per label).
3- It depends. Some switches support baby giants (frame slightly larger than 1500 bytes) by default, some others have to be explicitly configured for it and some other don't support it at all.
4- As mentioned above, each mpls label requires 4 additional bytes so "mpls mtu 1524" allows for 6 labels.
5- Why do you want to do MPLS over GRE?
6- If you configure "mpls mtu" and that all switches in your MPLS core support baby giants, you will not have fragmentation. Fragmentation is not good and you probably not want to see in your core.
    7- see 6.
    Hope this helps,

  • MacBook Pro (Late 2013) - Need OS X &  Win7 & Extra Ntfs partition. Is this possible?

Spent 2 days googling, trying, restoring. Is it possible to have Win7 and extra ntfs partition?

Only if Windows can be installed in EFI mode.
It can be done in CSM (bios) mode but it will involve manually creating a new hybrid MBR and it would be over-written every time you upgrade OSX. Not really advisable.

  • Need clarity on how RDP CALs work in workgroup environment

    Hi,
One of our customer has purchased 5 CAL licenses for RDP. They don't have any windows server in house to deploy licensing server and all the machines are connected in workgroup. Please let me know how can they utilize the CAL licenses available. The licenses
which they purchased are reflecting in VLSC portal, but don't have a product key for same. Please help.
    Regards,
    Harishkumar. R

    Hi Harish,
Can you clarify, which RDS CAL purchased by your customer (Per User or Per Device)? From your description it seems they purchase, Per User RDS CAL. If so then it is not possible as
Per User CAL is not supported in workgroup environment (we need to have domain joined environment) otherwise need to install per device CAL.
Please consider the following points while configuring RDS and RDS licensing servers in a workgroup environment:
    • We can use ONLY Per Device CALs in a workgroup environment.  So, you should install only Per Device CALs on RDS licensing server
    • Per User CAL tracking and reporting is not supported in workgroup mode
    • RDS Host and RDS licensing server roles can both be installed on the same server
    • If you install RDS licensing server on a different server in the workgroup, ensure that the RDS server is able to access RDS licensing server

  • Need clarity on ARP operation

    Hi,
I just wanna know whether i'm properly understandin ARP or not.
As per the OSI model if we take the communication between any two devices, the sender host will go through the
Application,Presentation,Session,Transport,Network,Datalink,Physical and the receiving host will go through the reverse process that
    is from physical to application.
So if PC-A wants to speak to PC-B it is not possible for them to communicate only with the IP address (Network layer address), PC-A also
needs the MAC (Datalink layer address) of the PC-B because the information that PC-A sending has to travel through the physical layer and then
it should be validated with the MAC address of PC-B at the datalink layer then after it reaches the Network layer and there again PC-B checks that
that packet is destined for it and then PC-B acknowledges PC-A.
Please correct me if i'm worng somewhere.
And i read that ARP uses local broadcast 255.255.255.255 at layer3 and FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF at layer2. I understood that since it doesn't have the MAC
of the destined PC it will use the layer2 broadcast but what is the purpose of using a layer3 broadcast when the sender PC know the IP address of the
    destination PC.
    Regards,
    Chandu

    Yes you are correct Chandra.
But briefly to go over ARP, in words.....
To understand the neccesity of ARP, we firstly need to understand how packets are routed on the local network.
Most networks in this day and age largely utilizing ethernet. Several computers are connected to a switch, the switch in turn is connected to some kind of router that has got the capabilities to route packets to other networks.
Then how are packets on a ethernet routed?
Every network card has got a MAC address. This address is global unique and is burnt in to the card BIA (burned in address). In ethernet every packet has got a source-mac and a destination-mac. The switches, (purely layer 2) don't look at the IP addresses, they only use the MAC-adresses to find the right destination for a packet - normally based on some sort of table (CAM table).
The MAC-adresses are only used to find the destinations for packets in a local network MAC is on Layer 2 in the ISO/OSI Model, IP is on Layer 3
So why do we need ARP?
Let's assume that you have got two computers, 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 that are connected to a switch. 10.0.0.1 wants to send a packet to 10.0.0.2.
I've explained that ethernet only uses MAC adresses. So 10.0.0.1 has got to stick the MAC address of 10.0.0.2 in front of the IP packet so that it can be sent into the network - how will it get there in the first place?
But 10.0.0.1 does not know that address right? ARP comes to the rescue. 10.0.0.1 sends an ARP packet into the network that asks every computer "have you got the address 10.0.0.1? If you have please send your mac address to me, my MAC-address is xxxxx". This packet is broadcast to the whole network and does not need an destination MAC.
10.0.0.2 now answers and sends it's own MAC-address to 10.0.0.1 who in turn can stick the MAC address of 10.0.0.2 in front of the IP packet which now can be sent to the network.
Try using a packet capturing tool to see this arp process.
    Take a look below
A host 10.1.1.1 is trying to see where its default gateway is which is 10.1.1.254. It doesn't know the mac address. What does it do?
    1) From the host which is 10.1.1.1 - the arp destination is broadcast, asking who has 10.1.1.254 - tell me, I am 10.1.1.1
1a) At this point the destination is unknown, what would a switch do if its destination is broadcast? If the switch had the MAC address in its CAM table it would have forwarded direcly to the correct port, if it does not, then it will forward out of every forwarding interface in the layer 2 domain.
    2) Note that the Mac address is the source of this frame, this is how the gateway learns of the hosts mac address too
    3) Next the gateway responds saying 10.1.1.254 is at (MAC address) directly to host.
With layer 3 its different, application/protocols - it may be intended or not, to send to all hosts in the network for various reasons. Example of this being used would be DHCP.
