Need compatible MiniDV Camcorder for imac

I am in need of a compatible Mini DV Camcorder? Does anyone know what camcorders are compatible with the imac? Camcorder that records on the little tapes. Currently I have a Sony Mini DV DCR-TRV27. It is not recognized. I have the correct firewire cables. 4 pin to 9 pin. MySony DVD player/burner does recognize so I know the Sony is outputting a signal. I have a ton of movies that I want to import to imove and cannot. Is this a Sony model issue or is it the mini DV format issue. Any help or suggestion would greatly be appreciated!!!
Jed

Hi
Sony Mini DV DCR-TRV27
Is supposed to work. My list on this.
*NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
Cable
• Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
• Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
Camera
• Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
• Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
• Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
• Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
Connections
• Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
Mac
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
(Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
SoftWare
• Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
• Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
• FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
Using WHAT versions ? .
• Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
• QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
• iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
• iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
• Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
• If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Extended formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)
from LKN 1935.
Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935
from Karsten.
in addition to Bengt's excellent '9 yards of advice' ..
camera set to 'Play' , not rec/computer/etc.?
camera not on battery, but power-line?
did your Mac 'recognize' this camera before...?
a technical check.
connect camera, on, playback, fw-connected...
click on the Blue Apple, upper left of your screen ..
choose 'About../More..
under Firewire.. what do you read..?
More
• FileVault - Secure that it’s turned off
• Network storage - DOESN’T WORK
• Where did You store/capture/import Your project ?
External USB hard disk = Bad Choise / FireWire = Good
If so it has to be Mac OS Extended formatted
----> UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange is NOT Working for VIDEO !

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.
*No Camera or bad import*
• USB hard disk
• Network storage
• File Vault is on

if you have adobe cs3 or 4 and have the adobe bridge on close that
or no firewire will work
see if that halps

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.

  • Need a compatible laserjet printer for imac (2009) OSX10.10

I need a new printer and would like a laser jet, if possible.  I have a 2009 iMac with OSX10.10 Yosemite.  This is just for my home use and don't need anything fancy.  Please help with a compatible recommendation.

There are too many to list by every laser manufacturer. I'd suggest determining   your needs such as do you want/need color, do you want/need a multifunction (i.e. scan, fax, copy, print) etc. then once you have determined your needs visit your local office supply store and look to see which are OS X compatible.

Yes. The recording format is MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, which can be imported to iMovie.

  • Can anyone recommend a compatible DV camcorder for use with iMovie3?

This will be my 1st camcorder and only need to know if certain brands will/won't work with iMovie3 for simple family use. Any help will be much apprieciated! i'm on an Emac G4. thanks!

    Welcome to the discussions.
iMovie 3 is the buggiest version ever. See it you can get hold of iLife '04. iLife '04 contains iMovie 4 and iDVD 4. iMovie 4 is much more stable than iMovie 3. iDVD 4 has better picture quality than iDVD 3.
For both iMovie 3 and 4, you must have a "DV" camera that uses mini-DV tapes. None of them comes with a Firewire cable, so you must purchase one separately. Firewire is also called i.Link, IEEE1394 or DV.
You can buy any currently selling DV camera as they will all work.
If you are looking on the "used" market, avoid Samsung.
Finally, don't ever empty iMovie's trash in iMove 1-4. You may lose your project.
    Good luck.

  • A compatible Yahoo Messenger for imac

I have friends on ym--I know apple has problems with YM; however, the old version 2.5.3 used to allow cam to work-now it does not. The other version 3.0 Beta YM allows cam for 2 minutes then it is off. To the viewer it states "disconnected" -to me it states "broadcasting no viewers" while I can see myself in cam window.
    1. is there a better version/something I need to do?
    2. I just use ym cuz friends are, is there another system I can download to allow me to join in their addresses-converse? I know YM is not the greatest

What kind of webcam are you using?
I am using YM as I am responding to you. Never had a problem using the webcam (built-in iSight) on any version of YM. Newer YM version has FREE phone calls now. It's free if you want to talk to the person who is IM'ing you. To call someone's actual phone (using a real phone #) it will cost ya!.

Any problems you are having w/YM, you will need to contact Yahoo!!!! IM customer support.
    Good luck!

  • Best Camcorder for Simple VIdeo & Burning DVD

Hi all. I've had a MiniDV camcorder for about 10 years that just broke. Since only 1 camcorder is sold with MiniDV, I'm nervous that I'll need to find a new storage medium for our existing movies. I'd like to buy a new camcorder to take videos of kids etc and have the ability to burn to DVD for future storage.
I don't think I'll plan on editing (but would like the capability) and I've seen the list of Apple supported products and all of the discussions here which have just made my head spin. I'm really just looking to take decent video, put the SD Card into my computer, and burn it to a good quality (not internet) DVD. I was leaning towards either the Canon FS200 or the Sanyo with iFrame but I've seen mixed reviews (which may have just been from Pros).
Lastly, we have a new (2009) MacBookPro with iMovie '09 and iDVD '09.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.

This may sound counter intuitive but I and others I know get fine results using just a Canon point-and-shoot camera. A friend and I have spent some time comparing the cost and results from "dedicated" popular-priced video cams compared to our (we both own the same model) Canon S3-IS cameras. If anything - the video quality is a bit better with our "still" cameras. The current version of the S3 can be found at the Canon website. Oh - From S3 onward, this model line takes the high capacity SD cards up to (at least) 8 GB. This size memory card provides over 60 minutes of video at "full size" (640 x 480).
I carry the S3 almost daily - just in case I get a photo op or a "video op" like a fire or other emergency. I've shot video downtown with just street lights for light source: the videos need very little lightening if any under those conditions. My camera has 12 X optical zoom and the latest version has 20X optical zoom. I also like that this model line continues to use 4, AA size batteries (you can use rechargeable NiMb AA, of course). Shop around, I'm pretty sure you can get the latest version for under $400.
Other points: I find the built in microphones in these cameras to be very good - as good as any in a camera in that price range. Downloading (the AVI / QT .mov) files can be done with a simple card reader or with the connect-to-camera USB cable supplied with the Canon camera. I use a card reader - just on the thought that having the camera on while downloading drains the batteries a bit.
The Canon downloader software works fine with Macs - but I use Adobe Bridge because it gives more options for naming files, etc. I would NOT recommend GraphicConverter for downloading / organizing video: it handles digital photos okay but sometimes just "screws up" video files for no apparent reason. Some people now like Picasa for Mac - but I haven't used it much so I can't say myself.
I go with the others responding here when it comes to editing: iMovie HD seems to be the last gasp from Apple when it comes to low-cost (but practical) movie editing.
I did like iMovie 09 - mainly for the "jiggle remover." But the little update (to 8.0.5) really messed up iMovie 09 for me and quite a few other people.

  • Startup disk  for imac g5

    Hi,
i need to startup disk for imac g5

Call AppleCare.    If they don't have it, then the 10.4.6 retail installer can at least give you the ability to install the lowest possible operating system:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2541
And the 10.4.11 combo PowerPC update will help you bring yourself back up to where you currently are.
Mind you, you should backup your data prior to installing anything.  There are 10.4 compatible versions of Carbon Copy Cloner and Superduper that can make an exact replica of your Mac to a Firewire hard drive, and Firewire 400/800 cables that can connect current Firewire 800 drives, if you can't find a 400 drive.
http://www.macsales.com/ sells lots of good external hard drives for Macs.
Do not buy a hard drive with manufacturer backup software installed as that may not remain compatible through updates.
You can't get Classic installed without the restore discs.
Some Apple usergroups may have people with the correct restore discs:

If yes,Which Prosumer or Semi-Pro Camcorder will you recommend?Really need your helps, maybe you are the one who are currently using it and feel happy with over all?!
Hope to get some suggestion from you guys!!
    Thanks!!

Thanks for tip David. I work at a middle school, we shoot a lot of district functions with three cameras then use the multiclip function of FCP. If I bought three of these cameras do you think they will work well in that environment? here is our workflow:
    1. Sync cameras with a clapper at the start of show.
    2. Import into FCP
    3. Mark inpoint at the sound of the clapper
    4. Create the multiclip sequence and edit
We have done 50 or so shows like this with 14 year olds as the editors and the results are very nice. I would like to move to the hard drive based camera. Being in education we are on a tight budget. Think three of these camerass would work in this environment?
Thanks so much for your expert advice.

  • Need genealogy program for imac intel

I need genealogy program for new imac intel. My old program was for Apple G II S. Have viewed program called heredis mac x.2 but don't know if it is compatible for imac intel. All new territory for me. Thank you, Lisa

Though I don't have an Intel Mac, I use both Heredis and Reunion. You could check with each company about Intel compatibility.
I keep my file in both because the FH represents the greatest investment of time for anything on the computer. I want always to have a usable file so dont put all my eggs in one basket.
Reunion is a bit more versatile inrespect of the fundamental structures but Heredis uses a different basic construction which I wanted as a reserve. Heredis is about £20 less expensive here in UK than Reunion.
One specific thing about Heredis is that it stores the actual data file or files as documents in the user documents folder. You need to realise what these things are in said folder and not delete them by accident.
The down side of using two different programmes is that of synchronisation. If you add new data in one app you need to add it manually in the other. I would never trust it to GEDCOM transfer to transfer all fields correctly especially if you have data in the more esoteric fields of any particular programme.
Heredis has an ability to display a 3d tree showing all, I repeat all the relationships including the families of removed cousins etc rather like a complex organic molecule. It is zoomable and you can get text data displayed from any person box, any 'atom' ,to pursue the analogy. It has source and repository features just as good as the more expensive Reunion. It may be ruled out for some though. It has no tab to indicate the 'disposal' of a family member as being "abducted by aliens', whereas Reunion has!

  • Need MICR compatible ink cartridge for Officejet Pro 8500A Premium to print checks.

I need to print bank accepted checks on my Officejet Pro 8500A Premium printer using MICR ink.  I cannot find a compatible MICR cartridge for this printer.  There are MICR cartridges available for other HP printers.  Does anyone know of a compatible cartridge?

Try using the multilevel uninstaller in the HP software driver CD. Browse the contents of the CD and look for the "Util" folder and open it. In the "Util" folder, open the "CCC" folder. In the "CCC" folder, double click on the "Uninstall_L3.bat" file. Don't use the "Uninstall_L4.bat" file. It could remove files that have shared dependencies with the HP software. Restart the computer and then reinstall the software afterwards. Let me know if it worked or not.

Or you can simply use the Restore option of Disk Utility to clone the drive to the backup:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

It would depend on how old your IMac is, how mush memory you have, it it can be upgraded by OWC, etc. I have a 2006 Macbook Pro and would NOT put Mavericks on it or espeacially FCP 10.1.1 on it because the most memory it can have is 4 GB. You need at least 8 GB to work with Final Cut Pro 10.1.1. IMHO.
I would try to find a copy of Final Cut Express perhaps.

  • Do you need a special external hard drive for iMac?

Do you need a special external hard drive for iMac?

Any external hard drive that will connect via Firewire 800, USB, or Thunderbolt will work.
I have a 750GB Western Digital Scorpio drive in an OWC case, sitting on a Backpack, which connects via Firewire.  Western Digital Scorpio drives have 5 year warranties, the OWC (macsales.com) cases usually use the Oxford chipset which works well with macs, and the Backpack is a slick way to mount a backup drive without taking up desk space.
After you hook up whatever external drive you end up with, you'll partition and initialize it for OS X, then begin using it.
My opinion, I would not get a Western Digital pre-packaged external drive/case.  While the hard drives are OK, there have been a number of people that have had issues with the electronics.
