Need Computer Purchasing Advice
I don't know why, but it seems whenever I finally get the funds together to buy a new mac the current macs are already outdated.
So I need a new Mac Pro but I am wondering do I wait until the end of September to see if any new Mac Pros are coming out or do I just buy now. I could get by until September or October but if the new Mac Pro's are not released until the new year, then I will probably buy now. I really wish I could
have bought them when they first came out. I'm afraid I'll buy one and a faster mac will be released shortly after. I've heard new iMacs may be released this fall. If so would they possibly be faster than the current Mac Pro's?
Another question is. How old is the technology on the Mac Pro's now. Would I be better to wait IYO?
Thanks!

Apple has usually introduced new Mac Pro's in the new year but what are the chances of them introducing them in Sept or October? Is it almost nil IYO?
In my opinion? Nil. I would bet money on it.
In yesterdays article from Appleinsider;
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/08/27/ipodsmacbooks_imacs_up_next_on_apples_2008roadmap.html
we read;
Apple's Mac Pro, (....) , were not mentioned amongst the company's plans for the remainder of 2008. However, that doesn't necessarily preclude them from making an appearance; AppleInsider can only report on what it has heard.
Understandable. Nehalem is 6 months away. So any new MacPro would have no new processors. What else would warrant a new product sortie?

I will be doing work in After Effects and rendering 3D animation so a lot of power is essential. If I buy an Mac Pro Octocore, would I see a noticeable difference in speed between the 2.8 ghz and the 3.3 ghz machine IYO?

i'm going to ask you if the following scenario fits your description;
it's monday morning and your assistant tells you that the phone was ringing before SHE got in. Your client pleads with you, can you produce this need of his, by friday morning, so that by friday afternoon he can relay your work to his client, so that by friday night, they can broadcast the content on their unique opportunity at national or even international coverage? He proceeds to tell you that his whole business' future, and the livelyhood of all his employees, depends on your ability to answer his question, yes or no.
The answer to your question is selfevident at this point, yes? Clients, deadlines, and other peoples interest at stake, you invest in the top, no questions asked.
IF!
IF, on the other hand, we're not talking about some big-city-deadlines. But rather work that must be done on your schedule. Then i say money saved between the 3.3 and the 2.8 is better served in more RAM, faster hard drives, externals, cards, whatever.
Do you have deadlines?
Nota Bene, I'm asking if you have deadlines established by others, or if we're talking about deadlines that you establish.
In other words, if this article doesn't convey my meaning...;
http://www.barefeats.com/harper.html
where you see an improvement of single-digit percentages of the 3.2 over the 2.8 ghz...
You (should be willing to) pay an absolute premium for the absolute best processor, if you have an absolute need for the absolutely fastest system. If one of those is missing, go with the 2.8.

Hi,
I need a new joystick. It should be
- supported without fuss
- have force feedback
- be cheap
and
- someone knows the cedega config string for it.
Please add your advice. Thanks.I really like the PSX joypads especially the black one that comes with PS2. You can find a PSX -> USB adapter for ~20 Euros - which works great under linux - and with ~30 E buy two PSX joysticks.
btw. all usb joysticks should work fine under linux without fuss. -
Considerng purchase of a G5 Quad. I currently have a ~2yr old G5 2Ghz (Power PC 970 chip v2.2, 512 cache perchip, 1Ghz bus, boot rom v5.1.5f0). Unit has dual 7500rpm SATA drives, boot=80GB, 2nd=120GB and 3.5 GB ram. Use unit for light office work and for home video capture (TV) and editing, photos (25000+), audio = 10K+ songs.
Questions:
1) What kind of performance increase should I expect from a standard Quad with - say - 2GB-4GB ram? Is the quad worth the upgrade cost?
2) Will the unit be noticably louder or hotter than my present G5 - which is usually whisper quiet?
3) Do the Apple refurbs represent good value versus a "new" unit - given that the refurbs will like be drawn from the units often described on this forum as having been sent in for replacement?
4) anything else?
Thanks for any comments...You will love the Quad esp. where video and audio rendering is concerned. Any software that utilizes multi-processor architecture will really be enhanced with this set-up. I wouldn't recommend less than 4GB RAM and if you can swing more do so. I have 4GB right now and gave up on the 30" Cinema Display and got the 23" in order to get the RAM. The amount of RAM is the next most important addition you can add to boost performance - just like a hotter cam helps an engine of a given displacement run stronger than the same size engine with a milder cam (sorry about the analogy - I'm a gearhead too...). With the type of work you list - the Quad plus RAM will be quite the ticket. Heat is not an issue with mine - you'll notice some when really working it but I can't say it's any worse than the G5's I use at work. As far as noise - it is whisper quiet UNLESS - and here's the rub - you get the nVIDEA 7800 card. I have it - I love it, but the cooling fan makes a sound comparable to a CD spinning in the drive. I wouldn't even consider stepping back to the 6600 that comes stock however. It is much faster and the noise is not a huge problem - I just wish the fan was a quiet as the G5's are. Again, with the type of work you have planned I would recommend this card over the stock one which uses a heat sink instead of a fan. I'll take the performance of the 7800 any day. Feel free to go with a refurb if you wish - personally, I wouldn't. With this much of an investment, I want new even if they give a warrantee - they got traded in for a reason... Just a few of my thoughts for you. Happy shopping!

Hi, I need help and advice. Basically me and my ex partner both had iphones and synced it with the same computer under the same ID. We split up and now im trying to get all my apps and info onto my new laptop with a new account but it keeps asking me for the old apple ID which she is still using and she changed the password. i tried backing it up but still nohing. When i try to back up purchased items being apps etc its keeps asking for the old one. help
See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. But you'll still need the password.
Once you have the computer authorized to use the account she could change the password again to stop you buying apps on her card (assuming it's not on yours!). It would lock you out of upgrading them too but they should work unless she uses the deathorize all feature.
It depends on how amicable the split is...

I just purchase a brand new mac computer and I need to purchase new adobe CS software for work. Do you know if Adobe CS5 Design Premium-Mac is compatible with new mac computers with the updated Yosemite software? *No previous adobe CS software versions are on this computer
There are known technical issues with any older version on Yosemite, even CS6. Some can be worked out, others may not be relevant to you, some will remain unsolved.

Looking to create editable PDF forms with drop downs and text boxes for use on a Mac computer and iPad. Which product do I need to purchase? Do not need anything fancy
Basically you would need Acrobat. However, it is now also possible to create basic form fields using just the free Reader. In fact, I've been working on a tool that allows you to do it, so if you're interested in it please contact me privately.

The trial version of Acrobat Pro is already on my computer; purchased it today; instructions say access through cloud.acrobat but the system keeps telling me to download. I just want to work. Do I really need to download again?
Hi lynnb,
If you already have Acrobat installed, there's no need to download it again. When you launch Acrobat, you should be given an option to "License this Software." Click that option, and then log in with your Adobe ID and password, and you should be all set!
Please let us know how it goes.

I have a Canon DC310 camcorder that uses mini dvd's and doesn't have the ability to connect to a computer. How can I get my new Imac to read these dvd's? Will the mini dvd adapter work or do I need to purchase an external dvd rom device? Which device works well with the Mac? Do I need anything else to get the dvd material onto my mac? Thanks!!
No DV port in camcorder. Just a yellow AV port/hole. I did find a Canopus ADVC110 device in a box that was bought several years ago to convert VHS tapes onto DVD's. Can I use this with a Mac? Could I connect a dvd player to the Canopus and transfer the disks onto my Mac? Or, connect the camcorder via AV port to the Canopus and that to the Mac and transfer that way? Thanks again!

I am using an I-mac series 4 with a 2GHZ processor, I tried to convert to Lion and the rresponse was the chip was not fast enough, can I upgrade the chip or do I need to purchase a new computer?
Unfortunately yes, but Snow Leopard is still a great OS in the meantime so don't rush in too quick if you really don't need to.
Good Luck

I purchased pages and numbers for Ipad and Iphone, now I have a MacBook Air and I would like to use both softwares in my computer. Do I need to purchase them again ?
Yes. Air runs OS X, iPad and iPhone run iOS - different operating systems
that required different versions of Pages, Numbers, & Keynote to run. Like
the iOS version, once you purchase the version for your Air, you may install
it on as many OS X desktops/laptops that you own. -

I have two IMac computers. Both running the latest version on Snow Leopard. To upgrade to Lion, do I need to purchase two upgrades or can I use one purchase for bo†h computers?
Thanks,
AliceAs I understand the as yet unconfirmed rumor by me, is that once you pay for a single copy of Lion, every computer you have that's authorized under your Apple ID can download it, no limit on number.
