Need connector from firewire 400 to USB 2 port

got a new i-book and want to use my old ext hardrive firewire 400 for backup.
Is there a cable that connects the new i-book USB port to the firewire 400 ext hard drive so I can use the old external hard drive as backup?
Or am I screwed?

Doesn't the FireWire port on the iBook work?
Or are you mistaken about what you have? Is it a MacBook you have instead of an iBook?
If it is a 2010 Mac, it would be a MacBook, and, yes, it would not have a FireWire port.
External USB drives are fairly inexpensive. That would be the route I'd take.

  • Convert Firewire 400 into USB ports

I would like to make use of the Firewire 400 port on my Macbook as additional USB(s) port. For love nor money I cannot work out what, if any, cable or adapter I need to make this happen.
All my peripherals are USB style

Thanks so much for this. The second link pointed me to a US site but I am sure I can find a UK one. My problem is the connector to e.g. My external hard disk or printer or whatever is different and I am not sure how best to describe the socket in the appliance.  I am inclined to say small fat USB or small thin USB or small squashed USB. I am sure you get my point.. Is there a web site I can look at which describes the ends to USB cables using more scientific language!

  • Power firewire 400 to usb 2.0 adapter

Hello. With a 2nd generation iPod with Firewire 400 cable. Is it possible with an adapter to connect to a new USB 2.0 cable and have ipod recognized? Specifically for Automobile stereo with cable that works fine on ipods and iphones that use this cable for connectivity.

There is no practical way to convert from Firewire data to USB data.
Is yours the one that still had the old Firewire connector on the bottom or is it a slightly later one with the Dock Connector on the bottom?

  • My firewire 800 and USB ports on not functioning!

My firewire 800 and USB ports on not functioning, I believe it is an issue the next driver loaders anyone, know how I can reset these?

You don't "reset" a driver (kext).  And I don't believe it s a driver problem.  However you might try doing a smc and pram reset to see if that "shakes the ports loose".  Might work.  Couldn't hurt to try.

Thank you for your reply.  I know I can use a card reader however I don't see why I should when importing directly from my camera has worked reliably for years.  The process I use is simply connecting the digital output from my camera to the USB port on the iMac, which has previously automatically opened iPhoto ready for the import.  Now all of a sudden my iMac does not recognise the camera.  However if I connect in the same way to my MacBook then iPhoto opens automatically on the MacBook, recognises the camera and is ready for importing.  So whilst I know I can use a reader, or my MacBook I want to use my iMac in the same way that I have for years.  I can only assume that the settings on the iMac may have changed, but I cannot verify this.

  • I'm in need of a firewire 400 to thunderbolt connector.  Looked everywhere I can think of.  Any suggestions?

I purchased a new MacBook Pro and I'm having trouble finding a way to get my firewire 400 equipment to connect with thunderbolt.  I've looked all over and there  doesn't seem to be any available.  Any suggestions?

There aren't any direct cables, but you can use a Thunderbolt to Firewire adaptor and a FW800-400 cable.

  • IPod Connector To Firewire 400 or 800 Cable?

Does such a thing exist? An iPod Dock Connector cable to either Firewire 400 or 800? I've run out of spare USB 2.0 ports on the back of my iMac, but both of my Firewire ports are still available. It would be great if I could connect my iPod Touch to one of these. Is it possible, or do iPods only work with USB 2.0 connections?

I quite agree. Three USB2.0 is extremely paltry, as many as eight would be still be sensible IMHO. I wonder if there are any iMac users without USB hubs.
I'm currently looking at one of these:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/ministack/
It adds a USB2.0 hub, Firewire Hub and as much external storage as you need (Time Machine etc). Many of these will sit nicely on the iMac's plinth beneath the screen.

  • VIDEO: capturing w/ firewire 400 and USB 2 on Final Cut

I didn't think of it at the time because it didn't make sense then and it doesn't still. I exchanged a PowerBook G4 for a new MBP and realized, too late, that it had one less firewire port. ARG.
I've heard 1) that USB 2 is just as good as firewire, 2) that its as good only if you're using a PC-based machine, and 3) that it should be avoided altogether when it comes to editing video.
Can I absolutly positively use firewire from my camera to capture video onto my USB 2 external HD without dropped frames or studdered video?
    AND
If my HD is FAT formatted for my old Dell notebook, would that have an effect on the write speed when I use it with a Mac?
Also, it seems like a bad idea, but can I daisy-chain my camera and my external HD??

do not use usb for capturing video. the max data rate is about the same as firewire 400, but it doesn't offer as high of a continued transfer rate. in short, you'll lose some frames.
the cool thing about a firewire 400 port, though, is that you can daisy chain up to 8 firewire devices to that one port and not have to worry about it. i usually have about 3 or 4 external drives hooked up to each other and my firewire, and i just plug my camera into the firewire port on one of the hard drives. it works just as well as if i had plugged it into my computer.
there's really no need for an extra firewire port or firewire 800 unless you're doing a really involved, highly detailed project, like a feature film, that would require higher data rates and more storage space.

  • If I move from Firewire 400 to 800 will download speed of video increase?

    Hi,
I have just upgraded from a MacMini (which had firewire 400) to a new iMac which only has firewire 800. I have a 3 year old JVC digital camcorder (GR-D340EK) with ilink out and previously used a Belkin cable to connect to my Macmini. My question is if I now purchase an ilink to FW800 cable for the iMac will the video download at twice the rate or am I just as well to purchase a cheaper FW 400 to 800 adapter, which I understand would only give me FW400 speeds (and could be used for other devices too)?
    Any advice guys?
    Regards
    Shakey

Either way, the speed of the connection will be the same. The device itself is FireWire 400, so it will not go any faster.
You can often find the cable for about the same price as the adapter. What you need, if the camera has the smaller FireWire connector, is a 9-pin to 4-pin cable, like this one

  • Upgrading from Firewire 400 to 800 on Original Macbook Pro

Is it possible to upgrade my original Macbook Pro Firewire 400 port to an 800 port? And will it perform at 800 on the original Macbook Pro?
    This is my situation:
I will be recording on a Canon HD VIXIA HF S10 Dual Flash Memory Camcorder. You can record to an internal memory of 32GB or a 32GB removable SDHC card. The camcorder does not provide a Firewire port, only USB 2.0. I figure if I use the card to record on, I can then use a Firewire 800 card reader to transfer the large HD video file to the laptop, believing this would be considerably faster than the direct USB 2.0 from the camera (I could be wrong). I will edit the film and then save it to an external portable 800 Firewire hard drive for storage. I will be backpacking which means the weight, size, durability and speed all matter for this process. I am just trying to decide which setup is best for my camcorder, computer and external hard drives. Thanks.

FireWire 800 can potentially be much faster than USB 2.0. It is that way with hard disks for sure.
You cannot upgrade the port inside your machine. What you can do is get a FireWire 800 card like this one and stick it into your ExpressCard slot.

  • FIREWIRE 400 to USB 2.0 CABLE ???? I want to continue using my ISIGHT !

I havea new MacBook , has no Firewire 800 or Firewire 400 jacks.
I still want to use my isight
    Help!
I cant find a cable that will allow me to still use my Isight.

    Hello WHN
    I havea new MacBook ...
I still want to use my isight
    Help!
I cant find a cable that will allow me to still use my Isight.
As everyone is trying to tell you above, there is no way to use an external iSight on the new MacBooks that do not have Firewire ports.
If you are determined to use your external iSight, you will need to get a different Mac that meets the system requirements for the application that you want to use with your iSight.
Check the systems requirements carefuly for each application you plan to use because requirements are different from app to app. For instance, some older Macs that have Firewire are too slow or may have the wrong processor type for some of the apps that can use iSight.

  • I need an equipment with an entry USB port to send a wav file and exit I & Q

We are working with an equipment consisted in a transmitter and a receiver. At the end we have 2 computers,we are trying to send a wav file through USB port from one computer and converted to I & Q signal (that supports our transmitter).
On the other end we have to convert from I & Q signals to a signal who can interprete the USB port.
Our ask is if exists an equipment which could do these two fuctions.
    Thanks a lot.

We have data acquisition (DAQ) devices that have a USB interface. You could send a .wav file to an analog output of a USB-DAQ device and you could acquire an analog signal (with analog inputs on a USB-DAQ device) and write that to a .wav file with another USB-DAQ device.
What is an I&Q signal? You need to give more information on what what characteristics are needed for a signal to be I&Q. I have included a link below to a USB-DAQ device within our on-line catalog for you to take a look at.

  • Cannot print from Canon MF4412 through USB port of Time Capsule

    Hi everyone,
I've recently purchased a new Canon imageCLASS MF4412 and cannot print while connected to the USB port of the time capsule. I can print and scan perfectly when connected directly to the mac.
This is the exact steps I took:
1.After connecting the usb cable to the back of Time capsule, I go to the sys pref pane to add a printer.
2.It shows up as a 'Bonjour' and I had to manually select the driver.
3.It added fine and I thought everything was setup.
4.However, when i go to print something, there's an error. "Canon URF II Printer Driver"
"Cannon communicate with the printer, or the printer is not supported. If the printer is supported, check the printer connection and add it again. Then, if the Print Dialog box has a [Printer Info] button, acquire the printer information: 10322"
    Anybody know of a solution?
    Thanks.

I got a similar problem on MF4412, the canon 4412 is connected the newest airport extreme , it get configured. But I got same problem described about on my leopard, lion, even worst on iOS, it does not find the printer. But I got a Windows 7 starter NetBook ...haha it works, I can print it from Windows. what is the problem then,it works on Windows but not Apple's OS??????

  • External HDD won't mount to desktop from 1/2 of USB Ports

I have an external Iomega HDD and when it's plugged into my left USB port it works fine but when it's plugged into the right USB port it won't mount to the desktop and I can't access it. It doesn't show up in the system profiler or disk utility either.
However other usb devices (wireless mouse for example) work fine when plugged into that port. So I don't think it's the drive because it works in other ports and the port seems to be at least partially functional... But not with the drive.
    Any ideas?

Is the drive bus-powered or does it have its own AC power adapter? Are you using a hub?
