    Many Thanks, Kurt.
I knew I'd seen the solution you've provided somewhere - either in MacWorld or MacFormat - but couldn't remember the Gatekeeper bit!
I shall save it somewhere VERY safe now in case this happens again …
You have made an old man very happy and saved me from worrying that senile decay had suddenly set in. (I was 70 last week so you might understand the situation from that.)

  • I updated to Firefox/Mozilla 5 and can't open it - deleted download and reloaded but still nothing

I was running the former version of Firefox/Mozilla and was notified to update to the newer version of 5 which I did and have not been able to open it at all. I have enough hard drive and memory to run it on Windows XP operating system. Tried to go back to the older version but can't do that either. Right now I am using Opera but would much rather use Firefox as I liked it a lot. I am upgrading to another computer soon running the Windows 7 Professional - do you have any reports of Firefox 5 being unable to run on Windows operating systems?

There are a lot of Firefox 5 users still running Windows XP, but everyone's memory and drive space and graphics are a little different, so it's hard to make a blanket statement.
I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
Next, download and re-run the Firefox 5 installer to see whether that corrects the problem.
    http://www.mozilla.com/firefox
If the installer won't run until you exit Firefox, the program may be hung in memory. You can use the Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) to shut it down. Check both the Applications tab and the Processes tab.
    Does that help?

I bought an ebook from simon and schuster, it told me I had to download the book to Adobe Digital 3.0.  I downloaded Adobe Digital 3.0 but every time I try to get the book, Adobe reader pops up and says file cannot be opened.  Simon and Schuster has been no help at all, just keep sending the same download instructions@

I have had the same problem. Adobe doesn't have an answer. I highly recommend dumping Nook and going to Kindle.

  • Downloaded document cannot be opened in Adobe Digital Editions, error is #2038

I have downloaded a document for Adobe Digital Editions, but it cannot be opened, error is # 2038, what to be done ??

    Hi minczel,
The #2038 error indicates that ADE cannot get to Activation server. This generally happens because of either system or application level firewalls disallow access to the Adobe activation site (http://adeactivate.adobe.com/adept/)
Try disabling the firewall and check.
You might also want to refer to the solution mentioned in the thread : Error # 2038

  • I need a Windows-executable widget that.....

...toggles the users’s Adobe Acrobat program preferences\Internet\Web Browser Options “Display PDF in browser” check box ON or OFF from OUTSIDE of Acrobat...(or, at least, brings up that window, so the user can check/uncheck the box.)
Rationale: in a Sharepoint browser based document management system, people can't work with PDFs as editable files if their Acrobat preferences are set to “Display PDF in browser”.  That setting, which is only meant to enable dumbed-down, browser-based PDF viewing, is ON by default in Acrobat Preferences, which prevents a knowledge worker from editing a PDF in Sharepoint..when they open a PDF they only get to view it in their browser with Acrobat Reader...they can't add/insert/rotate/delete pages, touch up text, etc. because with this setting checked, when they open a pdf, they are just viewing it in Reader.
But workgroups who make heavy use of PDFs in Sharepoint need the ability to edit PDFs, not just view them. Such a widget could be placed as an executable file in an easy to find location to make it a snap for workers to toggle it on/off.
A more distant goal would be to have Adobe provide a setting in Acrobat that somehow automatically turns this OFF if a user is trying to open a PDF from within Sharepoint.  It would enhance Acrobat's compatibility with Sharepoint, which would seem to be a good marketing strategy for Adobe.

  • Pacman needs two tries to download packages or sync

I have a tiny issue bugging me about Pacman. For every action connecting to the internet, Pacman hangs (to which I control-c). When I do it the second time, it works fine. The works repeatedly, too: every other command doesn't hang. I've tried going into su - and trying it, still only every other command works. I've also tried this with different mirrors, with no success. I am not using a custom XferCommand. This is with the latest Pacman in core - v3.2.2 wih libalpm v3.1.1.

If you mean the connection hangs, it happens occassionally to me. You can try using a different downloader via XferCommand. Seems to work for me.

  • After updating to automatic firefox 10.0 I cannot use open in new window. Why ?

Tried to "open link in new window" on several sites after automatically updating to 10.0 . Windows links will not open in new window.

You may need to delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing the latest Firefox.<br />
In case you still have problems after installing then check your security software.
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Supressing Dos window on executing system command

    Hey,
is there any way to supress the dos window when I call a system dependent .exe or bat file?
    AND
is there any way to run a .exe file as a background process so that no window of it pops up?
I use the Runtime.exe() to execute the system command but I'm annoyed by the dos windows it opens up.
    Any help highly appreciated.

This is an AGE OLD Issue which Sun keep burying. By burying I mean it has been the top of their bugs/requests list many times. They just decide its closed without making any such fixes. The community is not pleased with Suns actions in this respect, blowing off their highest rated request.
    Answer:
If you start your program with java.exe, then you wont get that window when you do runtime commands. If you start with javaw.exe, you will. They are blaiming it on M$ but most feel its just a silly Sun position and lame attempt to put somethign on M$ that is not really on M$. Sun can do it but they feel their solution is unstable. Most people have ended up making .exes to replace java.exe to get rid of that hideous console window. JBuilder has an interesting (but not my type) solution.
If you search the top 10 bugs/ requests this one has likely resurfaced as Sun keeps erasing it, but the people keep voting it back to the top...

  • Running executables in a DOS window

I'm in a bind that I think has two possible solutions.
What I need to do is get an exe running. Normally, when you double click on it, it opens up a DOS window and runs in that. If I use Runtime.getRuntime().exec(), then the app runs invisibly, which is not good (for testing).
On top of this problem, one I have the app open I need to navigate through the menu system as if someone were actually sitting there typing. There are no APIs defined for interaction with the program.
I think one possible solution is to use Runtime.getRuntime().exec() to run a batch file that will open the program. However, if I use this approach then I will need to detect the newly running GUI so I can "type" into it, possibly using the Robot class.
Another solution is to have Java open a DOS window itself and run the program from inside of it. This seems like it would be more straightforward because I would have all the handles necessary for interacting with the window, again with the Robot class.
I can't find any information on working with Dos apps through Java, and I'm not sure which, if any, of these approaches is feasible. Does anyone have any advice?

no, the apps don't run "silently" when you use
Runtime. Instead, the Process object gives you
access to their input and output streams.
Essentially giving you the Dos console that you're
e used to programatically. You can write to and read
from its streams in any manner you like. Thanks Brent. Unfortunately for me, the app I'm using doesn't output anything java's input stream can read. It's one of those old graphical menu kind of interfaces.
The other reason that I'd like to run it graphically is that I would be able to see what my program is doing while I'm debugging it. Since I have to do things like press "down arrow" it would be a lot easier to use the Robot class than to tell Java to send those sequences across.
