Need experienced music buff to help!  Best possible settings.

Hi there! I am about to import 1500+ cds into a second iTunes library (for safekeeping) and have read so much info that my head is spinning! Can anyone who really knows tell me the best way to do this. I have more than enough room, externals, etc., so size is not a problem. I am assuming to import with Lossless but having no control over settings concerns me. No need for concern? My goal is the best quality possible as I am getting rid of my actual cd's (with the exception of MJ, of course!). My current settings for my first library are AAC, 256 kpbs, 44.1 khz, channels on auto with VBR checked on and optimize for voice left unchecked. Any thoughts on this? Also, does error correction really do anything? Thanks!!!
Once imported in lossless is there an easy way to convert selected tracks to lower quality setting for playback on external device like iPod? Thank you, thank you!

No need for concern, since with a lossless codec there is really no need for any settings.

Fine for non-archival purposes, though I can hear the difference between AAC 256 and the original (or a Lossless version) so I wouldn't use AAC for archiving unless you just don't have the storage space for lossless versions and the archive is a "last resort" sort of backup. Whether 256 AAC works for you will depend on your playback system, ears and preferences.
Also, does error correction really do anything?
Yes, it does, though how much it helps depends on the quality of the CD you're importing. With a pristine CD, error correction probably is doing nothing useful, but with a CD that's somewhat damaged, error correction may help yield a successful import.

Change the Import settings to the format you want (AAC, MP3, etc.), select the tracks, and use the "Create xxx version" under the Advanced menu in iTunes. Then sort out the compressed versions (playlist, sorting by Kind column) for transfer to the iPod. You might also take a look at this script (courtesy of Doug's AppleScripts for iTunes):

So, what are the best settings to record in using Canon HD Vixia HG20 for easy migration into iMovee'11 v.9.0.9?
It would be most helpful to list what the best possible settings are.
    frame rate?
    format?  FXP?

I suggest filming in 30P with this camera. That should be the MXP setting.
You could also use 30i which would be the FXP setting.
You will get the best results in iMovie by shooting progressive.

  • I need a little bit of help if possible that is

so i got my ipod about 3 weeks ago or so and i was diconnecting it right the entire time but i left in to charge one night and my sister decided she need that port for her camera and pulled it out incorrectly at first the screen was frozen on do not disconnect but i got past that..now i have nothing on it when i go to put my music on it i get the message "The iPod "IPOD" cannot be updated. The required file cannot be found" is there anyway to fix that?????? Thanks

I know about the length method, what I dont knowis
how to use the length and substring methodstogether
to solve the problem i mentioned initially. There are three ingredients to perform this task:
    - String.length()
    - String.substring(int start, int end)
    - for-statement:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/java/nutsandbo
    lts/for.html
Pseudo code:IN <- input String from user
    LOOP FROM 0 -> IN.length()
    print IN.substring(?, ?)
    print ":"
    END LOOP
Remember, Im very new. ;)Remember that by just handing you the solution, you
will learn far less than finding things out by
    yourself.
; )Thanks a lot, i should be able to figure it out froom the pseudo code. :)

  • CS3 - What Are the Best Export Settings for Animation?

I have edited a project in Premiere Pro CS3. It is animated, and I want to preserve as much of the quality of the animation as I can.
What are the best possible settings that I can use to export the video to a .MOV file?
A little background info, in case it helps:
The animations were created in After Effects, and the .MOV files were made with the Animation codec.
After editing in Premiere, I exported the finished file to the Animation codec. It looks so-so.
Important: I imported the Premiere Project into After Effects, and exported the project with After Effects. The After Effects Quicktime file looks better than the Premiere version of the Quicktime file. (And has a higher data rate, in case that matters.)
What kind of settings do I need to select in Premiere when I export the video to make the .MOV file look as good as it can?
(And please don't be afraid to dumb it down.)
    Thx!

Try an Uncompressed "QT" file.  (Component YUV - 10-bit)
BTW: Did your PPRO Settings match the AEFX Comp you exported from?

  • Best Video Settings For The iPad.

    Hi everyone,
Does anyone know this ? "Best Video Settings For The iPad".
Kindly and in simple terms state the best possible settings to be use when converting videos for the iPad that optimizes the entire screen size/ area without a black borderline around your video. it's rather frustrating to have many technical jargons online without anyone giving real pointers at real values in conversion settings.
    Thanks in anticipation.

Kindly and in simple terms state the best possible settings to be use when converting videos for the iPad that optimizes the entire screen size/ area without a black borderline around your video.
It is impossible to answer your question without knowing both the aspect ratio of the source file and your personal preferences for displaying it on a 4:3 iPad screen.
Basically, you have two options here when converting files of one aspect ratio for display on a screen of another aspect. You can distort the original display to "fill" the ipad screen. (E.g., you can make a widescreen movie exactly fill your iPad screen but then people and objects will look tall and skinny.) The other option is to convert at the original aspect ratio and simply use the iPad "zoom" option to force your widescreen movie to fill your 4:3 screen by scaling the height of your movie to fill the screen and allowing the left and right edges of you movie to be cropped from your view. You have no other choices here other than living with the defaulted black areas.

    A 15" mid-2009 MBP RAM specifications are: 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
As has been pointed out, OWC is an excellent source for Mac compatible RAM.  Crucial is another first rate source for Mac RAM.  RAM from either vendor will work just as well as any purchased from Apple with the bonus of being less expensive and having a lifetime guarantee.

You would need the original installation disks or files for the Adobe software to get it onto your iMac, and having it on two computers may not be allowed by your university's licensing. Talk to whoever issued the MacBook.
As to the music, just copy it over to the MacBook, either via Home Sharing, file sharing, or an external storage medium (hard drive, USB flash drive, etc.).

  • What is best possible set-up to provide music less...

    Hello!
What is the best possible setup (skype, internet, any other parameters) for music lessons by Skype on a Mac? We are currently doing this but would like to improve the experience as there is a time lag (teacher and student cannot play simultaneously, sometimes audio and video don't match exactly), sometimes there are problems with audio and/or video quality and on rare occasions the connection is dropped. Are these issues to do with our internet service provider or is there someway we can change Skype parameters to improve lesson quality? We currently have 5Mbps internet service (which is more or less reliable), and the lessons are done near the Wifi router (doesn't seem to make a difference if we use ethernet cable or Wifi). Is there anything we can do to improve things?
    Thanks in advance,
    Music Lover
Subject/title expanded from "music lessons" to better reflect post content.

I am in a similar situation and have similar questions.
Some of my "friends in the know" that perhaps Skype is optimized for voice, so transmitting musical audio might not work as well. I have a 3Mbs speed and am having similar problems to what you describe.
Wish I could be of further help but hope my post prods others to chime in.

Because you can only synce with one iTunes library and you are switching libries by using the new computer. To nake this yyour syncing computer:
    - Move all the media(apps, music, synced video and photos etc) to the new computer.
    - Connect the iPofd yo the computer and bake a backup fo the iPod by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup.
Note that the backup that iTunes makes doe not include media.

  • N5800 - Help needed with music player

2 days ago, i encountered an error in my music player prompting some corrupted databases and music files and it was 'self-repairing'. After a while i rebooted the phone as it doesnt seem to be working.
After the reboot, my playlists and songs were all missing from the music player. Although i can locate the music files via file manager, i cant seem to find it in my music player. Refreshing the music library doesnt help either.
Anyone else have this problem before? Please advise, thanks.

You should be able to get everything back to normal by deleting the databases on the memory card.
Either stuff the memory card in a card reader (must be SDHC-compatible if you have tho 8GB card boxed with the handset) or connect the phone to your computer in "mass storage" mode. Make sure the display of hidden and system files is enabled if you're using Windows.
On the memory card you'll see a directory called "private" in which there's a bunch of directories of which the names are 8-digit hexadecimal numbers.
Locate and delete the following directories inside "private":
    101ffc31
    101ffca9
    10281e17
Next time you start the music player it'll start looking for music and podcasts and should re-create clean databases.

  • Need help with best render settings for project

    Hi everyone,
I am completely new to after effects and premiere.
    1. I am working on a premiere project with 1440 x 1080 mpeg2 footage from a Sony hdr-fx1000, in my premiere project my sequence settings are HDV 1080i30 (60i).
    2. I export a clip with under these same settings.
    3. I open a new composition in after effects with the following settings: preset: HDV 1080 29.97 (same as footage)
    4. I time stretch using pixel motion
    5. What are the best render settings and output module settings to use if I want to import the modified clip back into my premiere project?
PS I've been trying to output to mpeg2 but when i check the properties on the clip it says .mv2 and it looks choppy.
    Thanks in advance!

BTW, if you're new to After Effects, I very strongly recommend that you work your way through the getting-started materials here:

  • 1 ATA bus + 2 HDD's + 2 OS's = ?best possible config?

As I still use some desktop audio composition applications in OS9 (NOT Classic), but use OSX chiefly for typical domestic use (web, mail, itunes), I would like to know the best possible means of optimising my G4 Digital Audio for VST hard disc recording with 2 HDD's hung off of the one ATA bus in the master and slave positions, without losing out on either OS9 or OSX system performance ?
At present I have the G4's OEM 40GB IBM internal HDD with both OS9 and OSX installed. Most of the data on the drive are mp3's, which I generally don't listen to too frequently on the computer (there's the iPod for that). I'm to receive a new 120GB Western Digital drive in the forthcoming few days which I'm eager to use in the best possible means.
I am assuming that my best means of proceeding would be to clone both OS's from the master 40GB IBM hdd to the new 120GB drive, copy all my audio app's to the 120GB drive, then switch the drives around on the bus, thus making the new 120GB drive my master while retaining the 40GB as a slave, acting mainly as a repository for my ipods content ?
Would it be advisable, upon formatting the new drive, to create two seperate partitions, one of which for OS9 and the other for OSX, for optimum system performance ? Should I first format the drive in OS9 or does it matter if I format it in OSX first ?
Will the fact that I have cloned over my OS's to the new 120GB drive affect my OSX applications in any way, in so much as my iTunes will still recognise where all the content is (if the content remains on the "original" master [now slave] 40GB drive), Safari's bookmarked pages will be retained, my email account will still be accesible from mail etc.
Or, would the simplest solution be that I shift everything (both OS's, all app's, data) off of the 40GB master drive to the slaved 120GB, and then switch the drives master/slave positions ? Would I then be able to delete both OS's from the original IBM 40GB drive, thus freeing up more hard disc, and proceed with the 120GB Western digital as my master system and main data drive.
Or (are ye still with me?) should I simply leave the OS9 system on the 40GB IBM, clone OSX to the new WD120GB drive, copy all my OSX related data (i.e. mp3's) to the WD, swop the drives master and slave positions, so that on booting into either OS9 or OSX I will always only ever be using either the master or the slave on that bus, thus making the best use of its limitations ?
If anybody has some idea of what it is I'm getting at then please feel free to share what advice you have (bar advising me to buy a new computer - I'll wait for the new Conroe'd Macs to appear before upgrading my computer hardware, thanks very much).
    G4 Digital Audio 533Mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   OS9.2.2

    Hi, Brian!
You can simply initialize (format) the new WD drive using Disk Utility while booted to OS X on your IBM startup drive. Insure you check the Disk Utility box there to install the OS 9 drivers, which I'd recommend for any and all drives you have now or might get in the future, whether you're planning to run OS 9 on them or not. It doesn't take up any user-accesible space and not having the drivers should you need them is a problem that requires reformatting the drive and erasing everything on it in the process. You don't have to use OS 9 Disk Utility for anything beforehand.
As for master versus slave on a two-drive setup from a single ribbon cable, the Mac could care less which is which. It only cares that you have one of each. It doesn't care which drive is connected to which connector on the ribbon cable, either. You can boot and run equally well from a master or from a slave. The drives auto-negotiate, meaning that the controller recognizes the different drive speeds independently. Neither drive gets priority over the other for access to the bus. A slower drive configured as master will not limit the speed of data transfer on a faster slave drive. The drives will each be limited by their individual capabilities and by the overall "speed" of the drive bus, which in your case is capped at 66.7 MB/s maximum throughput.
If your IBM is a 5400 RPM drive, I'd put the OS's on the WD (regardless of its configuration as master or slave, which makes no difference), using the IBM as a backup drive.
If you're one who doesn't shy from partitioning, you could split the WD into two partitions, using one for OS X and the other for OS 9. You could later split the IBM as well, using different partitions for backups/clones and for data storage or a scratch disk. If you partition into multiple volumes, think through the sizes of the individual volumes you'll create. The most common problem folks run into is creating too many volumes and/or volumes that are later too small to be used effectively, wasting disk space. Safely changing partition sizes after-the-fact generally means erasing the entire drive to redo them. There are software utilities which will do this on-the-fly, but they all strongly advise backing up beforehand, which might say something about the risk in using them. Moreover, if you have to back up everything first, you may as well erase the drive and repartition from scratch...
Cloning makes an exact duplicate of a volume. Thus, if you clone your startup volume, you can boot to it and it will operate exactly the same as the original volume. The only apparent difference you'll see is that the startup volume you're running will be the one that appears on the top right corner of your desktop, instead of the original one. The clone copies everything over exactly as it was on the original, less some completely irrelevant temporary system files.
If you want to relocate your iTunes Music Folder (and all your iTunes music) from it's default location in Home/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music to another volume, you should perhaps do it after you've completed and tested the drive setups, cloning, etc. We can help you out with this if you'd like. It's easy to do, but involves a few setup steps to get it to operate correctly. I'd leave it alone for now until you're up and running from the new drive. At that point it will be easy to do.
Bottom line? I'd install the WD, partition it into two volumes, clone the IBM volume to one of the new volumes, copy the OS 9 Folder from the newly-cloned volume to the empty new volume, test startup and run from each of the new volumes to be satisfied that the cloning was successful, then trash the OS 9 folder from the new volume that has OS X on it. At that point you can either retain the IBM volume for backup or erase it and use it for whatever you desire (to include storing your music there).
If you need a cloning utility, I'd recommend Super Duper, which is extremely easy to understand and use. It's shareware, but allows for free use to do do full volume clones, which you are going to do here. Another good utility is CarbonCopyCloner (CCC), which is also fairly simple to use and allows for free use to do your clone. If you decide to keep and continue to use either one, CCC is less expensive, but SuperDuper has some additional, easy-to-use options that are enabled if you decide to purchase it.
