Need external hard drive ....any recommendations?

I have two internal hard drives (one just for movies = 250 gyg drive) which is almost full.
Need to get an exernal drive what is recommended. Any experience with the 800 external drive? What about capacity? are those big ones noisy? Is having 2 better than one large one?
Thanks,

I have quite a few Lacie HDs and they all operate flawlessly. I am sold on them. Tom Wolsky has always recommended Weibetec drives. I don't believe you would go wrong with either one. For what it's worth, I'm not high on Maxtors and most non-brandeds ... experienced too many quirky problems.
Some cameras don't like other devices on the same FW bus at the same time, whether or not they are daisychained. Canons in particular have been prone to wanting to be the only device on the FW bus, but I have also seen the problem with certain models in other manufacturers lines. Only thing you can do is test it with your specific camera.

Do I need external hard drive to back up my iMac before update to mountain lion? My is OS 10.6.8.

First, repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Second, make a bootable backup to an external drive using the Restore option of Disk Utility:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
Third, purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Be sure you meet the requirements for Mountain Lion:
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later

             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

  • Looking to purchased a external hard drive, any suggestions?????

    Hello My name is john...

    Cheers,
    John

I know, that when it comes for asking the same questionnaire in all my forums all over again..its get a little bothersome, right???
Yes it does. Once is enough.
Your Tibook only has USB 1.1 ports, not USB 2 ports. You would be insane to buy a USB drive to use with it, unless you also buy a USB 2 adapter card for your CardBus slot. But we've already been all through that with you, in one of the dozen or more threads you've started while spinning your wheels and repeating yourself for the last three weeks.
If you can only find one drive for $69.99, and $69.99 is the most you're willing to spend, then your choice is already made, and you don't need any other recommendations.
There aren't a lot of people reading or responding to questions in the Tibook Discussions any more. If you look through the forums, you'll see that it's fairly unusual for more than three or four different people to post in any given thread lately. The likelihood that you will get a wide variety of responses to any question posted here is pretty small. That's too bad, perhaps, but that's the way it is.

  • Almost got it..now need external hard drive

Well it just goes to show that persistence pays off, at least so far.
I now have FCP6.0.6 installed on my 2012 15" Macbook Pro running Lion.
The laptop was given to me with Mavericks.  Shane had the helpful response to get back to
Lion.  I researched and found out that this computer originally came with Lion, so I used the recovery
disk to do a factory reset.  I erased the hard drive and then did the factory reset over the internet.
Then to get FCP 6.0.6 on Lion.  I did it, but I am not exactly sure what did the trick.  I installed Rosetta
from Snow Leopard, but also did the command line recommended my Shane.  Not sure which one worked,
but it loaded FCP without a hitch.
Now I am up and running.   Phewwwww
So now I need an external hard drive.   No heavy lifting for this go around (HDV) but I may want something
a bit faster in the future.
I thought that a Thunderbolt drive might work out as I will be logging video from the camera with firewire to the
    external drive.
Wondering if there would be any problems with this drive.
Thanks again for all your suggestions

If Kirk reports any, I'm sure you can help walk him through uninstalling Rosetta. Now that he no longer needs it to run FCP 6...just install it.
WOW: Two statements - wrong twice!
Kirk specifically indicated he needed to install FCP6 on his new MacBook so that he could edit footage using FCP6 (while on his boat, if I remember correctly).
And no, I NEVER advise anyone to install Rosetta on a Lion, Mt. Lion and/or Mavericks Mac.  And to the contrary, when I see such advice (which is stale-dated advice from 2011, but is infrequently repeated more recently) I attempt to warn the OP not to follow such advice.
Since you have been on one or more of those threads, you have read my posts warning not to install Rosetta, but you continue to ignore them and proceed to give such advice based upon your one client's experience.
And hoping for advice on how to remove Rosetta after he reports crashes, panic attacks, etc. is like closing the barn door after you lose the cow!
So, no, I will not be giving Kirk, or anyone else for that matter, advice on how to remove Rosetta; only advice to NOT install it in the first place.
Something about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure!
    Good luck, Kirk!

  • Need External Hard drive Pro

First off, I apologize, I do not know where to properly address this question as it sin't so much my macbook pro related. I use a macbook pro but what my problem is ALL my external hard drives have clunked out and I don't have anyting for backing up, here I shall explain. K, so I have a WD 6TB thunderbolt ony whihc is pretty well full and works still. It backs up my macbook pro. However, I 3 Lacie external drives.  2 1TB Lacie BIG DISK U2&F4&F8 EXTREM + 7200 32mb and one 2TB Lacie BIG DISK U2&F4&F8 EXTREM + RECON.
K, slowly over time thse drives died out. Started with power supplys which is common. Not it seems its something internal and NOT the drives. I've rtaken in the past the drives out and tried them in my WD 6TB as its swappable. However, now I am stuck with 6 drives of which could hold 4TB of data let alone another WD digital 500GB drive to which is power supply related. Anyhow, my question is what kind of enclosure/bay would I need that these drives would work on. I don't understand this RAIN 0 RAIN 1 etc. Im not even sure what RAID these drives were until I find the boxes. I would love to be able to save this data but I don't understand external raid drives. Really hoping someone with knowledge in this area could please help me. I'd really appreciate. Whatever info you need from me to help just let me know. As for why not return to Lacie. Warrenty is out and when the first drive died (power) i called them and talked and basically I can a power cord which I didn't need but not enclsures or parts or anything, basically buy a new drive and they would put the data onto the new drive. So to me if someone could explain whatkind of enlsoure/bay would work for my drives that would be perfect. Thank you. Once agaiin sorry for putting in this section of discussions but had no clue where to put it.
    N

Didn't read your whole post, to long and not well laid out, but I notice you have a few drives that the power suppies have failed on. The actual physical disk/drive inside those cases are probably still fine. If you took them out of the failed cases, Enclosures, you would still be able to use them connected with a SATA, IDE to USB adapter or put them into another case/enclosure.
The physical drives used in any enclosure is the same type you would install inside any computer.
As to what to buy now, that is if you are looking for another external, I have a seagate USB 3 external that just flies on my Windows desktop. My MBP doesn't have USB 3.
Other then that go for another Thunderbolt drive system.

FPC wont let me render! I'm a video editor and have over 70 gb worth of videos on the imac which all need to be kept for various clients/backup/original versons but now beloved imac is full, only had it for 5 months! Will Ineed external hard drive every 5 months?? This can't be I've already resorted to getting rid of unsed applications such as garage band, iTunes, address book ect. I've trashed everything I could. what next ???
My video files are massive, converting them to a different format doesn't reduce the size of them it just turns them into mp4 or apple pro res ect
This iMac is for work only so there's no pictures, no music, no conacts, no messenger, no games, nonothing but videos!!

Have a look at this: http://grandperspectiv.sourceforge.net/
It will show you exactly what is taking up all of your space.
You also may want to consider some kind of external storage just for your video projects.

  • How do I store photos on an external hard drive? Recommendations for purchasing one?

P.S. - I am extremely new to using a Mac and trying to convert from a PC. I purchased and installed a Time Capsule thinking it would act as an external hard drive that I could routinely retrieve photos from but after looking through some of the other support answers I think I might have been wrong about this. I have thousands of photos that I need to store off of my hard drive and yet be able to easily access them for making books, calendars etc.
PPS - Please keep in mind I am new (and struggling) with learning all the functions. I need directions even a child could understand, Thanks

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • I need to upgrade my external hard drive, any suggestions

I have an iMac i5 quad core (2010 model), I have been using a Seagate Barracuda 250 GB 7200 RPM from an older iMac 20" G5 in an OWC Mercury Elite Pro Firewire 400/USB 2.0/1.1 enclosure as my backup external HD.  The enclosure has the Oxford 911 chipset and says that it supports up to 750GB.
Since I have been using Snow Leopard only I have used time machine to backup to this HD.  Now, that I have installed Lion, and partitioned my HD on my computer to have both Lion and Snow Leopard OS, I need to get a larger external HD to install in my OWC enclosure to save money.
I was looking on the OWC website and found a SeaGate 2.0TB Barracuda Green SATA 6Gb/s 64MB, 5900 RPM for $90.00, or the 7200 RPM for $158.00.
I am not sure if my enclosure with the Oxford 911 chipset will support this drive, and also the specs for my enclosure says up to 750GB, and that probably rules out these drives anyway.
I could just keep what I have and use it as a back up of my Lion partition currently using 134 GB.  Snow Leopard using 127 GB on my internal 1TB hard drive.  Then, I could purchase the OWC Mercury Elite Pro 2.0 TB Firewire 400/USB 2.0/1.1 with the Oxford 934 chipset, 5900 RPM, and 64 MB for $150.00. Even thought this would be a little slower, is it worth paying $40.00 more for the 7200 RPM speed?
On my hard drive now I am only using 261 GB, so after I first back up both partitions on the 2.0 TB external HD, any other backups would not take as long to do.  I have Super Duper, but right now it is not recognizing my Lion HD, and I have not backed up Lion to my current external HD yet since I want to get a larger external HD.  When I get the new HD, I can partition it so that I can backup either Lion partition or SL partition using time machine, it that right?  My current external HD is bootable, but I am confused about Carbon Copy or Super Duper, will that be saved on my external HD?
    Thanks,
    DaisyMay

I would recommend not settling for less then USB 3 or hold out for Thunderbolt, if your machine is capable. Firewire 800 minimum.

  • How Much External Hard Drive Partition Recommended for Audio Recording?

    Hi,
I have a glyph 300 gigabyte drive. Does anyone have thoughts on how to partition it? I was thinking 200 gb for samples, etc and 100gig for recording audio? Is that too much or too little for recording audio? Or should I use all 300 gigs for audio recording. I also want to do video editing in FCP eventually.
    Thanks

Okay...There are 3 guys and each has a basket full of marbles. The 1st guy has a basket full of red marbles, the second guy has a basket full of blue marbles, and you have a basket full of red and blue marbles. All three of you have your left hand tied behind your back. You are in competition with the other two guys, you are on your own and they work as a team. Someone starts shouting give me 3 reds and 2 blue marbles. You reach in your basket and grab 3 reds and 2 blues as fast as you can, but the other guys are way ahead of you because there are 2 of them and they each only have to worry about grabbing one color of marble at a time. So you lose the contest badly... that is why you need at least
2 hard drives instead of just one (whether partitioned or not). Buy an external firewire drive. you'll be glad you did.

  • I have a mac book osx 10.5.8 and would like to upgrade the hard drive any recommendations?

can i upgrade hard drive on my mac book osx 10.5.8?

An Early 2008 can be upgraded...to see a good selection of options, go the OWC site at http://www.macsales.com they are Mac specialists and only sell things they have tested and can guarantee to be compatible.  They also have on-line videos that will show you how to do the replacement.

  • Bad External Hard Drive? Recommended Software?

Hi all, My external Western Digital seems to have failed, every time I plug it in, it mounts, but just sits there and flashes and does not load any files.
I downloaded the demo for Data Rescue too, and it seems to find stuff on the Quick scan but says it will take around 300 hours Which is fine, but I was just wondering what tools everyone recommends before I run out to the Apple Store and buy one!
I think it is between TechTool Pro, Data Rescue, and DiskWarrior.
    Thanks for any help!

Data Rescue and Disk Warrior and Tech Tool Pro all do different things. Disk Warrior is tough to beat for repairing directory issues. Data Rescue can salvage files off a drive but it cannot repair a bad directory. Tech Tool is a good tool that can check many parts and aspects of a drive but it cannot restore trashed files or recover files from a failing drive.
I have both Tech Tool and Disk Warrior, though I rarely use them.

  • Mountain Lion destroys 3 external hard drives any reason why?

New Mac Book Pro Retina, Mountain Lion OS a all updates.  Each external USB hardrive including the main back up 3TB external
blows apart with a message  you can no longer read or write to this drive, the exteranl, back it up immediately.  Go to do that
it rebooted and now that drive as well as 2 others are not accessible.
I have put 2 of the externals on my older Mac Book and I can get them to mount, and had to buy a new 4TB exteranal for
backing up the older externals. I don't dare put that new one on the Mountian Lion new Mac Book Pro
as I already lost years of work on the 3TB drive that will not mount at all.  Something is terribly wrong
with this box or the OS  Anyone have any guidance?  I dread having all my externals and I have many that hold scads of my
work, etc.  The 3T may not be repairable as I can't get it to be seen by any other G5Duo or Mac Books 2 different ones
    all run on Snow lepoard
    Help?

As far as the older drives go, all may not be lost.
It is possible that the USB interface in the box may
be somehow hosed and the drive itself may be fine.
You could pull the old drive out of the case and use
one of the many USB->SATA adapters and hook up to
the another computer.  This would at least tell you if
you have lost all your data.  Make sure you get one
    with external powering like this:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002
Or if somehow the drive is corrupted, at least try to use
some recovery software to get te data back.  If the drive
is good, you can put it in another case.  If you have that
much at stake, you have nothing to lose but a few bucks
(price of a good meal soewhere) by trying this.
BTW, what brand are these HDDs?  Mountain Lion in and
of itself should not be causing the drives to be unreadable.
There may be a serious hardware issue with the MBP.

  • Need another hard drive  - any suggestions on specs and setup?

I started working with video in Premiere about a year ago - I have filled up 1 TB and I need to buy an external HD.  Does anyone have any suggestions or tips for what kind works good for editing?  Also I think I am supposed to set up so that PRE runs from 1 HD and all of my video is on the other, is that accurate?  I'm using PRE 8 and I have some projects that I want to stay intact when I make the switch.  In other words, if I reinstall PRE so that the video is captured to the new HD, how does this affect other projects where the program and all the data is on 1 HD?  Any help would be appreciated - Eric

For the smoothest and fastest Video-editing, being able to spread the I/O load over several HDD's, is really good.
Externals can present some unique problems, but this ARTICLE goes into a bit more detail. Note: there are some users, who have had zero issues with USB 2.0 externals, but I, and many others, have observed some major issues. Those observations are reflected in the above linked article.
The ultimate is probably a 3x internal I/O setup, with eSATA for the two additional HDD's is next best.
    Good luck,

  • Sd card reader does not show up as a external hard drive any were on my mac

i have a sd card reader that is run through usb. i plug it in whit my card in it that has files on it but the driver does not show up any were not on the desktop not any were ive gone through the trouble shooting on apples sight but no luck. any one have a idea?
the weird part about it is that it worked a few weaks ago no problem like i would just plug it in and it would show up on my desktop

It seems that Intel Macs have problems seeing (the media in) some USB storage devices.
For example I have a Zynet CR-T1-U28 8-in-1 memory card reader. It works A-OK on an old Powerbook running 10.3.9, and on several PPC-based newer machines running 10.4.10. The cards I've tried in it mount immediately and show up on the desktop (and iPhoto starts automatically if appropriate).
However none of the FAT-formatted cards I've tried will mount on any Intel-based machine I've tried it on (all have been running 10.4.10).
Here's how it shows up on my Macbook:
    USB Storage Device:
    Version: 1.00
    Bus Power (mA): 500
    Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
    Manufacturer: Generic
    Product ID: 0x3260
    Serial Number: 20030903213338562
    Vendor ID: 0x0aec
And here's how it shows up on the old Powerbook:
    USB Storage Device:
    Capacity: 60.75 MB
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: Yes
    BSD Name: disk1
    Vendor Name: Generic
    OS9 Drivers: No
    Product ID: 12896 ($3260)
    Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
    Bus Power (mA): 500
    Serial Number: 20030903213338562
Interestingly one kind of card I've tried, a Sandisk M2 card, the 64 MB card shown on the powerbook, mounts A-OK when it's in my Z710i phone and is connected via USB to the macbook. At first I thought the card reader could be at fault, but given the number of (admittedly vague) reports I've seen here today about similar problems with other devices I'm more inclined to blame some driver or kernel problem on Intel macs.
The following showed up for the first time ever in the console log during today's test to get the System Profiler data:
    Jul 22 14:27:17 macweird kernel[0]: USBF: 773285.286 IOUSBCompositeDriver[0x60c0c80](USB Storage Device) GetFullConfigDescriptor(0) returned NULL

  • Moving photos from iPad 3 to external hard drive

I've sync'd photos from albums on my Macbook and photos from my camera to my iPad 3 64gb. I have also created albums on the iPad from the photos moved from the camera so all photos are now in albums. To free up space on the Macbook and on the camera I would like to delete the photos from these 2 sources. To be on the safe side I would like to transfer the albums, which hold about 1600 photos, from the iPad to an external portable source. Is this possble and what external hard drive is recommended. Would the Kingston Wi Drive 16GB USB 2.0 Portable do the job or would I need something with greater capacity? It's not cheap.
    Thanks for your help.

There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more. It works by you turning it on and then accessing the files on it from an app that you download on your iDevice. You can access music, movies, and other stuff. No connections or anything, it works like a WiFi connection, you connect to it from the setting on the iPad under wireless networks.
Then there is the Seagate GoFlex, which some would recommend over the Wi-Drive. But this one costs $199 and had 500 Gigabytes of storage. It works the sameway as the Kingston: no wires, runs over its wireless connection. You can actually fit up to 300 HD movies on it.
