Need figure for Hard Drive Space saved with FCS and LS installed

Hello (this is my first post!)
Have a quick question... I am planning a purchase of a 17" MBP in the very near future, and am trying to get a total GB required for my HD with the software I will be using. Basically, if the total is low enough, I can get an SSD!
So here is my quandary. If I were to install Final Cut Studio and Logic Studio on a MBP, there is overlap in Compressor and Soundtrack Pro, and in all (?) of the audio content. If I understand the tech spec breakdown correctly, that means at least 22 GB (from the audio content breakout) of the installation is duplicate. Does anyone know the total GB (for the programs and content) that would be duplicate? I am looking for how much HD space that would be saved in this scenario. This will help me out tremendously in planning my purchase.
Thanks!
Dave
PS - BTW, I am aware some folks install all of the content on a separate external disk. While I have read up on the Pros/Cons, I figure that if I were to have an SSD large enough, it would be excellent to not have to plug in an external HD since the internal speed should suffice...

If you can, aim for a 256GB SSD, which will hold your core programs and have overhead for content (should you choose to store it there) and future expansion/growth.
If it's a 2011 machine, then start eyeballing external drives sporting the ThunderBolt interface, which is RIDICULOUSLY fast. A bunch of products are likely to be announced at this week's National Association of Broadcasters show, and will begin shipping in the days/weeks to come. The external drive should have no problem offering you capacity and performance that you'd need for your work. I have to admit, I'm a little envious - the new 'sandy bridge' MacBook Pro with that ATI chip and the new interface look really fantastic, it's an incredible amount of power to have on the go.
Good luck!

  • What is the other category on my mac book pro for hard drive space on how do I improve on it

What is the "other" category on my mac book pro for hard drive space? I found out that it is taking a whole lot of my computer's space...how do I find what it is and optimize it?

If you need to remove files for space see The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing space on your hard drive. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
Under no circumstances should you try deleting files outside of your Home folder.

That would depend on whether your model actually has a hard drive. If you have the new 2013 Retina model, then you have a fixed storage device built-in that cannot be modified after purchase.

after a restart it works for a time, but always slow. I went to the Applestore this afternoon and the made a check and said it would be the logicboard and they would have to change it for CHF 600 and it would be ready in 10 - 15 days

  • Best way to manage Aperture library size for hard drive space?

For a couple years, I have been using Aperture 2 and then migrated to Aperture 3. All this time I have worked completely on my laptops internal hard drive and with one library. My library is now 80gb and hard drive space is becoming an issue. Now I am trying to decide the best direction to take for reducing my internal hard drive space. My biggest storage culprit are my kids sports team pictures. I have taken thousands and thousands of pictures of kids that I don't need to keep in my internal library. I would like to pull my kids out of those pics, keep them in my main library and archive the rest out. I'm looking for advice for the best process.
I put an external drive on my Airport USB drive and put my library in a new vault last night. I know it is much slower than going direct to USB on computer. With wireless N it took about 12 hours to backup the 80gb library to a new vault on this Airport drive. Are there any issues with using the Airport USB other than speed? I know apple has issues with using time machine on this kind of setup but I don't know if Aperture has any of the same issues. My thought is that I might use this drive for additional libraries as well.
    Thanks
    -Erik

Once I move files to external storage as a "referenced master", is there a way to move some of them back to main library on the internal drive? I'm going to move all my team sports pictures to external but would like to keep the pictures with my kids on the internal drive where they are at. But if I unintentionally move some of my kids to the external drive, how do I "un-reference" them and move them back?
    Thanks for the help!

  • Do i need a new hard drive? (screen with apple comes up & nothing else)

what has happened to my laptop?
Do i need a new hard drive, because it wont even load, the screen with the apple comes up and nothing else happens. Very frustrating!
    any help is great
    thanks j

    Hey Jim,
Yes it says verified next to S.M.A.R.T - does that mean that i need a new hard drive
No that would mean your drive is good. However S.M.A.R.T is not infalliable.
my mac is 3 years old i bought it in jan 2006
thought a hard drive had a longer life than that though???
Well normally we think 4-5 years but laptop drives are more prone to failures - smaller and get bumped more.
It seems more like you've got a corrupted OS.
I clicked on disk utility and went on my hardrive and verified disk.
So at that point you were booted on the installer disk?
You should backup all files immediately and try an archive and install.

  • Looking for hard drive space...

I've got less than a gig of hard drive space left on my Mac book. I've backed as much off as I can to my back up drive. Anyone have any suggestions on where I can find the "hidden" or duplicate system files that might be taking up a lot of space on my HD?
    thanks!

  • Need Help Recovering Hard Drive Space on Disk Utility

I recently wanted to resize my Boot Camp hard drive partition as I did not need it to be 194 gb. In the process I screwed something up and now that space that was once my Boot Camp Partition is now "free space." My Mac Partition still says that I have 305 gb left and I am unsure how to expand this partition to get back that "grey" space. I've tried using Boot Camp Assistant, starting with Command+R after the "chime," and restoring my OSX (not completely however).
I need help in getting back this missing space. It seems that I have looked everywhere and although people seem to have a similar issue I can't figure it out.
Would restoring Mountain Lion completely by using a USB jump drive solve this problem? I have an external hard drive that uses Time Machine to back up my MacBook so a complete restore shouldn't be an issue.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!
P.S. This is what my disk utility currently looks like...

You can try to use Boot Camp Assistant to completely remove the Windows partition but it might not work.
Simple fact is once you setup a Windows partition you can't fool with it at all, that is unless you use some add on program specifically designed to do that on a Mac computer. If you need to resize the Windows partition you first need to use BCA and remove the partition completely and then recreate it at the new size you want and reinstall Windows.
You might have to use Time Machine and backup your Mac partition then repartition the complete drive and then restore from that Time Machine backup. Then setup the Windows partition and reinstall Windows.

  • I need help recovering hard-drive space...

I was doing a 35-pass-erase on my Macbook Pro for a "clean" install of Snow Leopard. Everything was fine and dandy until I noticed that I only had 216 GB after the installation. My Macbook Pro is a 250 GB model. I know the OS and iLife applications take up space, but 34 GB? Really?
I'm thinking that my install wasn't so "clean" after all. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong and what I can do to recover some GB?

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Don't forget that the stated capacity is more than you get in reality. For example. my Powerbook has a 160GB drive that shows the capacity as 148.93GB. What does OS X say the capacity of the hard drive is? When you take that into account, you may find that the operating system install is a more reasonable size.
One thing you can do to reduce the operating system footprint is to run Monolingual, to remove languages you'll never use. Download from http://monolingual.sourceforge.net/ . If you use it, take it slowly, and don't delete English!

  • External Hard drive help: use with mac and pc? how to backup everything etc

Hello! I need some help regarding a new external hard drive I got from OWC. It is a 500 gb firewire 400 + usb 2.0 7200 rpm hard drive. I am running it from firewire. The software suggests the first thing you do is make a clone of your macbooks internal hard drive, that way if it fails later you can use the external to back everything up. If I do this ...
    1. do I have to make the drive "Bootable" ? I have software called Data Backup 3 by Pro soft I think. It came with my external.
    2. Can I still back up other stuff like my audio recordings and record onto that drive to a seperate folder?
    3. If I make a bootable copy will it try and boot from the drive everytime I turn it on or something?
My other question is... how can I use this drive with a pc? I have a pc as well and I heard that the only way it will work is to format it in ms-dos mode (fat32?)
If I write it to fat32 will it slow down my drive or make it worse? I heard that you should format external drives specifically for mac if you have a mac; so it will only work with macs...
(sorry this is going on and on; it's like a chain reaction of questions)
so If its formatted to mac drive format then can I do this with my current situation:
    1. I have wireless internet, the router is on a pc downstairs
    2. Can I send files over a network somehow from the pc to my mac
    3. then store it on my external?
If so can someone point me in that direction with a link?
Thank you for reading, sorry for making this so long.

    1. No, you don't have to make a bootable clone.
    2. If you use the drive for a bootable backup, then you cannot use the drive for other types of storage unless you partition the drive and make more than one volume.
    3. No, it will not try to boot the computer. You must designate the startup volume using Startup Disk preferences.
If you wish to use the drive on both a Mac and a PC, then either you make two partitions - one for Mac and the other for the PC or you must format the entire drive using FAT32 so the drive can be used for read//write by both operating systems. If you do this then you cannot use the drive for a bootable backup nor can you use it with Time Machine.
FAT32 is slower for read/write on the Mac than using Mac formatting.
Optimally, I would suggest you partition the drive into two volumes. One volume formatted for the Mac and the other formatted FAT32.
You can send files from a PC to a Mac and vice-versa using File Sharing. Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "file sharing" or "sharing" to find help articles. Also see,

  • Whcih external hard drive works best with macs and time machine

I'm looking for an external hard drive preferably at circuit city since I have $100 in gift cards.
I'm looking at the Acomdata pure drive 500 and 750
The Western Digital Mybook essential edition 500 and 750
    Simpletech 500GB
    Simpletech redrive 500GB
    or Maxtor 500GB
I don't which one to pick as there are negative reviews on all of them with crashing after only one year. If not any of these what other one to pick, would like it to be from circuit city, not matter what your opinion might be of them.
I know about the Lacie drives and the G-drive but those seems expensive and only from apple store. I have airport extreme so only need usb connection so i don't care what other ports it has.
It seems like a really tough decision and looking for some help.
    Let me know

    Hi,\ not sure how this translates to the USA market (brand names) Im UK;
But I've been using a Lacie external hard drive for ages without problems.
Not so sure about Western Digital, - I've heard some bad reports.
I posted a request myself, and Lacie came back highly reccomended, so thats why I chose them.

  • Formatting Hard Drive to use with TM and Windows

I hope this is not a strange question. I have new iMac with 500GB, and a Windows XP system that I'd like to use with my new eGO 1TB USB drive.
    Will this work:
    - Partition 750GB for Time Machine
    - Partition 250GB to allow my Mac to store files permanantely, as well as being accessible by Windows XP.
I assume that there is a drive formatting process that allows this? In other words can one Partition be 'Mac Only' and the other 'Mac and PC'?
I am hoping that I can unplug the USB from the Mac, and take the eGo to the XP system, and have the 250GB Partition be accessible.
Am I on the right path here?

select the whole drive (model, not name) in disk utility and click on the partition tab. set the number of partitions to two and click on options. in the resulting popup set the partition scheme to GUID. then click on each partition and change the formats to Mac os extended journaled for the first 1 and to MS DOS (FAT) for the second one. finally, hit "apply".

  • Need suggestions for new router running mac with eyeconnect, and ps3

We have the latest version of leopard on our 24" imac and we have eyeconnect ver. 1.6 we need to buy a new router and i want one that is very easy(like plug it in and walk away)to use. The main priority for this is not having problems streaming media to our ps3 via eyeconnect or medialink. Wireless or wired whatever would be the best i have never actually had an airport only linksys and have been unhappy with most of them any advice welcome about the router or getting eyeconnect to be recognized by the ps3 once its hooked up. Thank you

What I have in my house is an Airport Extreme with it's two (n,b or g) wireless connections for older non-N wireless connections. I then got a D-Link DGS-2208 10/100/1000Mbps 8-Port Desktop Green Ethernet Switch 8 for fast subnet sharing in the house. This speed is important for HD video sharing for from the external I have connected to the USB2 port on My Extreme.
Note: My Extreme is in "Bridged mode" because it sits behind a wired router that acts as the DHCP server.
Getting a router with Gig Ports and and USB2 port for an external to store/share files (videos mainly) to all my networked devices. The USB2 port on the Extreme was the deciding factor for the extra cost and this handy port making any USB2 external into a networked drive. Plus my older iPhone 3GS only does G it was a no-brainier because of the dual wireless.
The GIG switch is future proofing yourself for the years to come.
Plus I called the extreme but it is a Time Capsule that is just and extreme with a built-in disk.
One more thing: Use CAT6 cables in your network.

  • User account available hard drive space

I have multiple computers in an office of 20+ that are used for rotating student interns. I have a user account set up for each student, 2 on any one machine. The issue is that an individual user only has roughly 8.5 gb available for hard drive space. The computer has an 80 gb hard drive. I do not want to limit the amount of space a user can have.
Is there an eay way to not have a limitation set for each user.
    Thank You in advance

    Duane,
That was my understanding as well, but for some reason there seems to be a limitation on the accounts.
Could there be any other explination?

The genius bar technicians can check your MBP for possible hardware problems and specific software issues that you may have.  The diagnosis will be free.  Any extensive repairs will not be free.
If you have minor software problems, you essentially will have to deal with them yourself.  Examine these two comprehensive documents for possible problem definition and solutions.  If you encounter problems that you are unable to cope with, start a new discussion and there will be persons willing to assist you in solving them.
