Need fonts to consistently display between Mac & PC exports

I work for a company that produces Flash content on both Mac
& PC's. We are continually having to make design adjustments
between the two platforms to keep the swf exports looking
consistent as the fla's are passed around for updates. We'd like to
develop a system that will remedy this situation. I'm guessing that
we should use a font converter to make the fonts universal, but is
that enough? I'm wondering if anyone has expertise in this area to
help us keep our font designs consistent across both platforms
going through the funky Flash machine.
Thanks for your help!

Kerning information is part of each font, whether TrueType, PostScript Type 1, or OpenType. If you have the exactly same font on both platforms (in their respective versions, if necessary), going back and forth should be a straightforward process. (The only exception concerns ligatures with TT and PS fonts, but, even there, the kerning should be unaffected.)
Are you sure you are not seeing just some screen display anomaly? Have you compared actual printed output?
Are you using a professional-grade font? Many cheap or free fonts are deficient in areas, such as kerning. You might think you have the same font on both platforms, but the "cheap" font on your Windows machine might, in fact, not be the exact equivalent of an identically named font on your company's Mac.

    Hello -
I am keen to get an LED cinema display to use on my new MacBook Pro - but I share my study with my children - so want to give them a MacMini to use.
How easy is it two swap between the MacMini and the MacBook Pro ? I guess there is only one input in the LED cinema display ???
    Thanks in advance.

Interesting - I have the same idea: sharing a 24" cinema display between a Macbook Pro for myself and a Mac mini for my wife.
The only problem I see is that the display doesn't have any Firewire ports. So if I want to use an external harddrive (or a mini-DV camcorder) on both computers when connected to the display, then I'd have to plug that into the computer instead of the display ...

  • Multiple display between Mac and Ipad

I have an IPAD with latest IOS system and a Mac with Maverick.
Would multi display works between Mac and Ipad?
If so, where can I found manual or instruction to make it works?
    Thanks.

You'd have to use something like DisplayPad to do that. I have it set up on my system and its working great under Mavericks (it wasn't supported under Mountain Lion on my system).
    Good luck.

  • Kerning different between mac and pc with ttf fonts?

When I take a file from my PC to my company's mac the ttf font kerning is fine, but when I go from mac to pc the kernning gets all messed up. is there anything that I can do to fix this? Or do I need to buy a mac to be sure I get accurate fonts across my and my company's computers?

Best Buy (only local option) has only a VGA / USB from iogear that scroll lock doesn't work on the Mac and low and behold I'm a d.a. and didn't notice VGA, ie:  want/need DVI.
I don't game on my Mac or do high-end video editing but don't want to step down the video quality too much.
Appreciate all of the forthcoming advice.

I guess I should have clarified and said "can you please share what you've used and been successful with"
Two that I have been considering are:
    ConnectPRO

    IOGear

If you do the Belkin KVM wizard, as soon as you reference a Mac, they only support VGA and I am not sure why.  http://www.belkin.com/kvm/

  • Need help sharing internet connection between pc and mac using airport

    Hello
I have a PC with an internal modem that connects to the internet via 3g+. it's got wi-fi as my macbook.
i want to share the internet connection of the pc via wifi (using what is called an "ad hoc" connection ( a pc to pc network)) so that the mac can connect to the pc (via wifi) and use its internet connection.
i've already tried a bunch of things but they don't work, can someone help me or tell me where i can find a GOOD guide to do this? (i've already looked around but i haven't found anything that works)
    thanks

Hi. I'm not sure if this helps, but I just found a nice way to do it the other ways around (share the internet from your mac with your pc).
    See: http://echeng.com/journal/2009/07/06/encrypted-internet-sharing-between-mac-os-a nd-windows-xp/
Specifically, step 4 and 6 are crucial!:
    1. In Mac OS X, enable Internet Sharing to computers using Airport
    2. In AirPort Options, select 128-bit WEP encryption and enter a 13-character password
    3. In Windows, add a new wireless network
    4. Enter the SSID and select WEP encryption with Shared Network Authentication (not Open)
    5. Uncheck “The key is provided automatically” and enter the 13-character password
    6. In the Authentication tab, be sure that “Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication” is unchecked
The main idea is that MAC-WEP and PC-WEP are not quite the same, so this tweak makes them line up. Perhaps you can do it the other way around from PC to MAC by sort of reversing the idea?
    Hope that helps you!

There is a similar post just a few away from yours. I will suggest what I would try. Open your job settings file (press or print preferred to get all fonts) and then select the properties and the font tab. At your font to the always embed list and you will likely need to uncheck the subset box. Then save your job settings (give it a name that is meaningful to you, you can not use the settings file you started with as they are read only and I do not recommend changing that). Maybe that will do the job. Of course that is for the creation of the PDF, I forgot you were talking about a form. You might check the form field properties, but I suspect you have already tried that. Guess I don't play with forms enough. Others may be by to answer.

  • Din font won't display in pdf file since December update to version 11.0.10

I upgraded my Acrobat to version 11.0.10 just before the Christmas break. Din font is my corporate typeface and I used it yesterday to create an invoice in Mac Pages only to discover that I cannot view the pdf as the font won't display in Acrobat. And to add to the problem my clients who are using the same version of Acrobat are unable to view the font either on the pdf. It all worked fine before the upgrade.
What can be done to rectify the problem? I need to fix this asap.
This error message appears when I try and open the file "Cannot extract the embedded font 'DQPJNL+DIN-Medium'. S"
The DQPJNL bit changes depending on the file being opened but essential Din font won't display.

    Hi,
Please check if DIN font is embedded in your PDF by going to File > Properties > Fonts
If no, then you might need to go to 'Tools > Print Production > Preflight'
Then, open the PDF fixups section, click on Embed fonts fixup and choose 'Analyze and fix button'.
Please check and let me know if you are able to view the font now.

  • Safari's font selection is available but the actual font file is not in Mac

I am having problem with view the correct font rendering on safari for mac for some of the Chinese text. I used to be able to fix it under 3.0.4 but for some reason, the same thing is happening again and I could not get rid of it.
The situation is that under Safari 3.1, if I go to preferences->appearance->select (for standard font); I will see a font name "MingLiU" available. However, the actual file for that font is actually nowhere to be found on the computer. The reason why I need to find this file is that it is causing problem in letting safari to correctly display Chinese traditional text. I used to be able to go to font book and disable or remove the font but I went through font book and could not find such font file. I have also searched the entire hd and still could not find the font file.
If you have some ideas about locating that file, I would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

I think I found something interesting. Safari 3.1 actually downloads the font web pages uses and save it somewhere NOT in the font book. I found out about this by using firefox, which relies on the font in font book, and by uninstalling safari 3.1 and, before visiting any cite, I checked the kind of fonts available and then after I visit the problem site and voila, the problematic font now appears in one of the selections for safari.
I guess I will just have to stop using safari until I am allowed to control the kind of the fonts I can download.
    Thanks,

  • Great displays for Mac Pro 8 core (2010)

Im using a Samsung one right now and its 1080p but even when i watch 1080p movies on the display the lines and colors are blocky and i cant fix this. So i was thinking maybe if i bought an older apple display like the Cinema display that this would be a better fit. Im not in video editing or anything I just want a good quality display to show the full potential of the computer.
    Thanks for your time

    Goodredroad,
The fact is that there is no such thing as a "retina" display.
You have an Apple Macbook Pro with a 2560x1600 display.  Probably a 15" Macbook Pro with a 2560x1600 display.
If you calculate that display resolution (in PPI, or pixels per inch), a 2560x1600 15" display is 201.26ppi (with a 0.126mm dot pitch).
What this means is that you have over 200+ pixels per inch (PPI).  Which is a nice/decent display, with very high pixel density.  Many phones right now are over 300ppi (pixels per inch) with extremely low dot pitch numbers.  They are extremely high resolution displays (with very high pixel density).  This is what gives you the "clarity" and why a high-resolution display (in a very small screen size, with extremely high pixel density gives you such clarity).
Now you are complaining about "poor resolution" on your Samsung display (using an extremely old craptastic 3-4 year old Radeon 5000 series graphics card) which is laughable (at best).
The Samsung monitor that you mentioned is a 24" monitor (anytime you increase the size of the monitor, and use the same, or lower resolution, you are going to have FAR LESS pixels per inch).  So yes, of course if you look at a display with 200+ pixels per inch, and then compare it to a display that gets nearly HALF of that resolution (pixels per inch) that large display is going to seem "grainy" or "poor resolution".
That 24" display should have at least 3840x2160p (4K2K) resolution, just to get 183ppi (and 0.1384mm dot pitch) which would still be lower resolution (lower pixel density) than your 15" display.
You would actually need a 5760x3240p 32" display (which is half-way between 4K2K and 8K4K), and that would give you a 206.52ppi (and 0.123mm dot pitch) resolution, which would be comparable to what you are seeing on your 15" 2560x1600 "retina" display.
Yes, small little touchscreen cell phones (and now small laptop displays) are using high resolution displays (with much greater pixel density) and it does give you a much clearer picture.
Large monitor displays have not caught up, and most large monitors (24" and larger) should be in the 8K4K (7680x4320p) display resolution range right now.  Unfortunately, most are extremely low resolution (1920x1080p) which is more like a low-resolution TV (HDTV) display, and not really a high-resolution "retina" display (with a high pixel density).
If you stand back about 15 feet, from the 24" display, then yes it would look similar to your retina display (because you couldn't see the poor resolution up close), but since you are sitting in front of the 24" display, and are using a high-resolution (200+ppi monitor display as your reference display) it's extremely easy to see why your 24" display "looks like crap".
It has nothing to do with "1080p" because your retina display is not 1080p (it's actually 2560x1600p), so it's actually 1600p (on a small 15" screen) and you're trying to ask why a large 24" 1080p screen is much lower picture quality than a small 15" 1600p display?
Well the simple and correct answer is that your pixel density is much greater on a small 15" retina display (2560x1600p screen resolution on a 15" display gives you 201.26ppi and 0.1262mm dot pitch resolution).
The 24" Samsung (or any 1920x1080p display for that matter) is a lower-resolution display (it is only 1920x1080p) and it is also a much larger screen size (which means the pixels are spaced out much farther apart).  So the large 24" Samsung (at 1920x1080p screen resolution on a 24" display gives you 91.79ppi and 0.2767mm dot pitch).
What that means is that your 24" Samsung monitor is HALF of the resolution (pixel density) as your 15" 2560x1600 display.
The pixels are spaced out twice as far, and the pixel density is HALF of what your high resolution 15" MacBook Pro is.  So of course you are going to notice a very poor quality resolution (if you are comparing it to your retinan display on your Mac).  It would almost be like comparing a 540p display (analog) to a 1080p (HDTV) display at the same size.  You would notice a tremendous difference in picture quality and clarity.
So no, the two are not even close to being similar.  You would need a 32" UHDTV with 8K4K (7680x4320) display resolution, and yes that would give you great picture clarity (with a high pixel density) and you would notice that it would look similar/identical to your 15" display in picture quality.
But comparing a 1920x1080p 24" Samsung against a 15" 2560x1600p display is laughable, if you are trying to compare the picture quality (PPI and dot pitch) between the two (which is what visual resolution to the naked eye is).
The closer the pixels are together, the "better" the picture looks.  That is why Apple is calling it a "retina" display.  There is nothing "retina" about it, it is simply just a higher screen resolution (2560x1600p) on a smaller display (15" display) thus giving you a much higher pixel density (and much higher dot pitch) and thus giving you a much higher visual quality/clarity (then what you are used to).
So yes, if you compare it to a large 24" 1920x1080p display, you'll always be dissatisfied with the larger display.  If you want better picture quality, then get a Radeon HD 7970 graphics card (capable of 4K2K screen resolution) and then get a 4K2K monitor (such as a 30" 5120x3200p monitor) and you would have the exact same picture quality as on your 15" retina display.
3840x2400p at 22.5" Display would give you a similar pixel density (201.26ppi / 0.1262mm dot pitch) as your 15" 2560x1600p display.
So if you want the same quality resolution, on your desktop computer, then just buy a 22.5" display with 4K2K (3840x2160p display resolution) and that will give you the same exact picture clarity and quality (201.26ppi and 0.1262mm dot pitch) that your Apple Macbook Pro "retina" (2560x1600p) display has.
You'll also need a high-end graphics card (like a Radeon HD 7970) so that you can display the higher resolution (4K2K resolution).
    > I have tried all of that and im still not getting a "1080p" quality. I have compared
    > the quality of the videos on my mac pro and than watch the exact same video on
    > my Macbook pro retina. The files are the same they were downloaded off the itune
    > store at 1080p so i know thats not a variable. The monitor that im using is a Samsung
    > Syncmaster SM 2494HM. On the test account i got the same results
The files you are watching are being watched on a much smaller display (with a much higher pixel density display) so of course you are going to notice a drastic difference in picture quality.
It would be similar to watching a 540p movie on a 92" television and complaining that a 32" 1080p television "looked better" than the 92" 540p television.
    Same concept.

  • How can i stream(air mirroring) *.mkv files between Mac Pro and AppleTV2 by using quicktimeX?

How can i stream(air mirroring) *.mkv files between Mac Pro and AppleTV2 by using quicktimeX?
    Need support!

How can i stream(air mirroring) *.mkv files between Mac Pro and AppleTV2 by using quicktimeX?
As stated you can't. Even if the compressed data is TV compatible, the container is not. If the file is playback compatible with the QT X Player, you can, of course, play the file on your main system and "mirror" its display to the TV. Unfortunately, this normally means only the video is played back via the TV device. On the other hand, if you convert the MKV content to an TV compatible file (or move the compressed data to an TV compatible container if the data is already TV compatible), then you can mirror the QT X player (with audio) to the TV device in the full screen mode, air play/mirror it from iTunes (or any mobile device), or stream it directly from itunes.
Basically, what you can do here depends on the compressed data in the MKV file container and how you define "mirroring."

what is the difference between Macs Voice Over and the text to talk feature

Voice Over doesn't need someone to type in the text first. Voice Over works with specific screen displayed information so that a blind person can know where his/her cursor is or what is being displayed. Although it is an application of text to talk it's more than the text to talk feature.
