Need for Upgrade as Opposed to New Installation

What is the need to upgrade from 9i to 10g or 10g to 11g or 9i to 11g? If your database is relatively small, can an Oracle Export, uninstall database and install upgraded version desired be performed in place of an upgrade? What are the issues involved? Is deprecated functionality the only issue?

Hi SacCityLocal,
export/import works fine for smaller database as long as you have enough downtime. But please make sure to run the full database export as user SYSTEM (not SYS). The disadvantage of exp/imp is the time it'll take, additional storage for the dump file, you'll have to build up an empty database ideally with the correct locations for tablespaces/datafiles etc. - this all takes time and involves a lot of manial steps.
So I'd always prefer upgrading with the DBUA. This will do everything for you, customize your init.ora etc. And it should take less downtime and is less error-prone than export/import - so it's much easier.
You can go directly with the DBUA from 9i to 10gR2 or 11g - just as you want. There are no steps in between necessary. For exp/imp the same applies.
Please make sure to install the latest patch set to your new Oracle home before you start the upgrade with DBUA or exp/imp.
Kind regards
Mike

You need to purchase the retail version on a disc with a black face and a big X on it.  Do not buy a grey-faced version, that would be machine specific and won't work for you.

  • SPAM Update needed for Upgrade Assistent

For updating a SAP System (IDES 4.7) I assume I need the Upgrade Assistant!? I installed the UA-Server and connected with a browser to the local Service (http://x.x.x.x:4239/ua/UaGUI.html). After a few steps in the phase "PREPARE", the assistand is running into the following error: "The SPAM Version 15 of your system is too low!!!". I downloaded the newest SPAM-Package and unpacked it. The resulting files are "CSR0120031469_0026199.ATT" and "CSR0120031469_0026199.PAT". I copied them to \usr\sap\trans\EPS\in but the error still appears...
Any hint how to get 'em working? Am I totally wrong with this solution?

    Hi Thomas
I think for upgrading an IDES system you need to install it again. Anyway , this note 164244 says you can ask SAP for an upgrade if necessary.

  • Acrobat 9 (from CS4) asking for serial again after OS-upgrade to Yosemite. New installation not possible

Hi all, I feel quite desperate at the moment.
My old CS4 ran perfectly. Now I upgraded my system to Mac OS Yosemite and the trouble began.
First, Acrobat no longer ran properly and asked me to start e.g. Photoshop. What I did. Photoshop and all other CS4 applications no more worked beause of some license issues. I finally fixed this by means of Adobe's tool. I had to re-enter the CS4-Serial and Photoshop, Indesign etc. worked again. Not did Acrobat Pro 9. This application asked me to re-enter the serial. What I did. The serial was not accepted. I tried a thousand times. Then I uninstalled Acrobad Pro 9 and tried to re-install this application from the original CD. This does not work: The setup screen of my CS4 "Design Premium" stopped three times with the grey screen reading "Preparing to install". Other attempts ended up in error messages about JAVA etc. - The DVD simply does not work anymore with the new OS.
Can anyone tell me what to do? My search over Adobe's support pages never led me to a valid contact form or anything of use for this problem.
    Thank you in Advance

A point worth pointing out is that, although CS versions may have included installers for Acrobat they were not for direct use; often (who can remember CS4?) you MUST use the CS installer, which uses the Acrobat installer in a special way; CS licensing is not like Acrobat licensing and Acrobat does not take a CS number. Nevertheless, I'd still advise a restore and not upgrading your OS without being prepared to upgrade everything else. (And it's still very early, this is a very brave/risky thing even for CC licensees).

  • AGENT steps for Upgrading a database to new release

I have a 9.2.0.6 database that needs upgrading to 9.2.0.7. The OMA is 10.2.0.2. Are there any special steps required in the upgrade to the database and listener for the OMA? The ORACLE_HOME and TNS_ADMIN will be changing to reflect the new software. I know that the $AGENT_HOME/sysman/emd/targets.xml has references to the oracle db version.

Install base release, Install patchset, Install
    one-off's required.
${ORACLE_BASE}/product/9.2.0.7OK. How cost effective is it to go through all that for every Server and Database in an organisation? BTW. How many Servers and Databases do you have in your Organisation?
The install can occur at anytime while the system is
up, So all that is needed is the migration of the
    database from the ${ORACLE_BASE}/product/9.2.0.6 home
to the new home - and one-offs. Again, how do you measure this in terms of cost (resource, Infrastrucure, Time, money to do)? I will do this only if there is requirement for Parallel run of both(e.g. for an environment supporting both component releases). Else, all I need is backup 9206 server and databases to backup media and upgrade to 9207.
This greatly reduces our downtime and provides fall back if necessary. The difference in down time here is the time you will use to run the installer for binaries (whch takes the least amount of time). You still need the downtime to copy and upgrade the database after you have gone through that long process. And depending on the number of patchsets, CPUs, one-offs that has been applied to 9206, you are spending hours upgrading from 9206 to 9207.
I am concerned that a simple "Component Release" upgrade will require a lot of resource, Infrastrucure, Time, money to do. What will you do if you are managing databases for 10 different projects made up of 50 Oracle Server Installations, each with 4 Database Environments (Dev, SysTest, CAT and Prod = 200 Databases) and on four different platforms with some housing Terabytes of data. Personally, the process you go through for a Component Release will cost me unnecessary thousands of pounds. So, I will do what you do for only Major Release (e.g 9.2 to 10.1). If it is "really" necessary, I will do it for a Maintenance Release (9.1 to 9.2), but not a Component Release (9.2.0.6 to 9.2.0.7)

  • Upgraded iPad 2 to iOS6 - asking me to connect to iTunes - when I do, my Mac is saying 'detected an iPad in recovery mode but need to upgrade iTunes to a newer version (our Mac too old to upgrade). How do I restore iPad so I can use it again?

I upgraded my iPad 2 to iOS6 following a prompt from the application icon.
Once that was complete, my iPad asked me to connect to iTunes which I did.  iTunes then told me that it detected an iPad/iPod in recovery mode and I needed to have a newer version of iTunes to restore.
I've tried before to upgrade to a new version of iTunes but was advised my Mac was unable to support this due to the Mac's age and old operating system.
How, therefore, do I get back onto using my iPad 'cos at the moment, all I get when I switch it on is the 'connect to iTunes' symbols.
Help please, I'm getting withdrawal symptoms!

During a normal install of iOS 7.0.6 this does not happen but something clearly went wrong in your installation.
To fix this, connect to iTunes and restore to Factory. Hopefully your iPad will be working again and you can restore your iCloud backup during Setup.

  • Why there is need for upgradation

    Hi All,
can some one help me out with why we need to go for SAP BW upgradation to SAP BI 7.0?
    Thanks,

    Hi Bazi,
In BW 7.0 you have more tools to help you designing your data model. I would say also that, even though you have much more tools, the data flows have even become much more simple.
In BW 7.0, to trigger data loads inside the BW system, you have DTPs. In BW 3.x, you had only InfoPackages. That is an advace, because in BW 7.0, you won't necessarily need a staging DSO. That is because you may load first to the DataSource via InfoPackages and then into the InfoProviders you want, via DTP. Check the following thread: [Re: Is it compulsory to create ODS in BW?|Re: Is it compulsory to create ODS in BW?]
RSA1 is more well organized. There are more divisions and the searches are simpler.
    Instead of having the dataflow:
DataSource -> Transfer Rule -> InfoSource -> Update Rule -> InfoProvider
You may construct a much simpler flow:
      DataSource -> Transformation-> InfoProvider
There is also the new Archiving functionality.
There are many new features in BW 7.0 and it's really worth it.

  • Air port express needed for streaming if I have new apple TV?

I had so far a setup for music streaming where I used an additional airport express station where I have my AV receiver and had this station connected to the receiver. This old air port station is not working anymore and I anyway will change my whole setup now because I will get a new AV receiver with HDMI and I will connect a new apple TV directly to the receiver via HDMI. My question is whether I need to buy and connect also a new airport express station for some music streaming etc or can I with the new setup stream everything I want by using only the appletv (since the appletv supports also wlan)? I don't have at this place a lan cable availavle and also don't want to get one there, therefore I will need a wireless solution.
    Thanks in advance,
    Thomas

You can connect AppleTV to the reciever via HDMI or optical.
AppleTV's HDMI implementation has always been rather fussy and can be incompatible with some HDMI switches/receivers.
One potential issue is reports from some users that if the TV is not displaying the AppleTV output, then it goes to sleep and cannot be used for streaming audio - most of these reports relate to AppleTV connected to TV by HDMI and secondary optical output to receiver.
It may work fine for you but there is such a myriad of AV kit and TVs it's impossible to be sure without testing in a particular combination.
I assume you would use the AppleTV for other features not just audio, else just get an Airport Express.
AppleTV has wi-fi and ethernet connections - apart from the audio output side of things it does not do any of the other things an Express does.
Of note is reports that AppleTV always outputs stereo content as 16bit 48kHz PCM over optical and probably HDMI too.
If you choose AppleTV remember that in addition to using it as an Airport speaker for audio (redubbed Airplay as it now includes video in some instances) pushed from iTunes AppleTV can pull audio files directly from iTunes to play and output using it's onscreen menu system controlled by the physical remote or Apple's Remote app for iPhione/iPad etc.  Do an A/B of both audio streams they will differ - itunes effects will get pushed through Airplay, they're not added when AppleTV directly plays the files (better in my experience when using in a hi-fi setting not compensating for small computer speaker deficiencies).

  • Desperate need for upgrades - YES / NO - ??

    Hello Everyone,..
    I ahve the following product:
    - STOCK -
    iBook G3 (A.K.A. iCeBook)
    2 USB Ports
    1 FireWire Port
    1 Internal Modem
    1 Ethernet Port
    1 Mini DVI Port
    500 MHz
    128 MB RAM
10 GB HDD (like 4 GB Left)
DVD/CD Player (Not slot loading, it's a sort of tray that comes out.)
    NO AirPort Card
    Mac OS X Panther (10.3.9)
    ALL SOFTWARE UP TO DATE
OK, So you get an idea of what kind of computer i have..
Now this afternoon I went out shopping and I stopped at a Future Shop..
There, I tried an iMac like the 23 iNch one.. JEEZ.. it was soo fast.
On my iBook, if like i start the computer and the only thing running in the dock is the Finder, Then I click on Safari to start it, and it takes about 5 bounces before the little arrow under appears. and like for Photoshop it takes like 50 bounces.
So, when I tried the iMac at future shop. it took like half a bounce for safari to start.
So, should I pay for Memory upgrades, like i would add 512MB so that would give me 640 MB of RAM, and i would upgarde the HDD to something like 80 GB or more and maybe buy a AirPort card. So my question being;is it woth spending money on that?
    ThankYou, Martin
And also.. im a 13 year old student so i have a limited budget*

    Martin,
    In my opinion, no.
What you saw with the new iMac is performance that can't be matched with a five-year-old iBook, no matter what you do with it.
If you spend as much money as you're contemplating, you would be well on your way to a new entry-level MacBook.
The entry-level MacBook has a 1.83 GHz processor. That's more than 3 times as fast as your 500 MHz iBook, even if you don't take into account the Intel Core Duo processor. Apple says that the Core Duo 2.0 GHz processor is over 5 times faster than the 1.42 GHz iBook G4, which is way faster than your little iBook G3 500 MHz, so you can kind of see what kind of performance boost you would see.
The cheapest new MacBook costs $1099. It has 512 MB of RAM (I would recommend upgrading that to at least 1 GB), a 60 GB hard drive, built-in AirPort and Bluetooth, Combo drive (reads CD's and DVD's, writes CD's) a built-in iSight camera and the latest operating system, Tiger.
My recommendation to you would be to try to get along with your iBook for right now, and save your money until the MacBooks start shipping with OS X 10.5 (Leopard) sometime next spring. If you really don't think you can stand it that long, probably the best thing would be to upgrade the RAM with a 512 MB module.
    http://ramseeker.com/scripts/sortModelDetails.php?modelId=1&sortSize=512mb
You can often find a good deal here on Apple's website on refurbished Macs. Right now, there is a 1.83 GHz MacBook for $949, and a 2.0 GHz MacBook (my choice - it has the DVD burner) for $1099. (Apple Store > Special Deals > Refurbished Mac)
I recommend buying AppleCare on a portable computer.
Whatever you eventually decide, good luck!

  • How To needed for zooming and KEEPING the new close-up format

Hey folks, I have searched but perhaps I am not using the right key words because I cannot get the answer.
I filmed and imported a clip which has the subjects too far away so I worked out how to use the wireframe (thanks for that- I got that much from here) to zoom in and reposition the edited clip.
BUT- when I export it it is back to how it was- with too much wasted space around it.
What do I need to do to KEEP the zoomed in look?
    Thank you for reading.

Thank you Ian, it could well be. Changes only "stick" in the Viewer window, eh? I have looked and the slider in Motion is set to 140 so I assume that is percent. Am exporting as I type. Thank you very much.
For those looking to scale/zoom in to crop the picture (edges):
Select Image+Wireframe so that a white cross (from corner to corner) appears over your clip in Canvas (thank you Tom Wolsky) and then drag its corners in which ever way you would like- making the clip zoom in or out depending on your need. You can also move it around to recenter it if you wish.
PS: I did this in the Viewer (and NOT the Canvas one) and it WORKED fine. However I am told that this is to be done in the one entitled Canvas.

  • Licensing needed for upgrading from 12.0.4 to 12.0.6?

    Hi All,
    Good Morning ..
We have our E-Business Suite on Red Hat Linux - Version 12.0.4 . Database version is 10.2.0.2.
From a licensing perspective, will there be any additional license costs if we upgrade our
    Applications to 12.0.6?
    and Database to 11.2.0.1?
    Thanks,
    Kishore

    Hi,
No additional license is required unless you license/install new products.
You could contact your Oracle sales representative to confirm this.
    Thanks,
    Hussein

  • MSI ti 4200 128 MB and Problems with "Need for Speed: HighStakes"

Does any one know of a fix for "Need for Speed: HighStakes" with the new 45.32 drivers. When trying to start this game it won't even load, the screen goes dark for a second and then falls back to the desktop. Did the same thing with 43.45, but if I install the drivers that came with the Video card ( I think they were 31.XX) then the game works fine. Haven't come across any other games that won't run except this one, some examples that work fine are UT 2003, C&C: Generals, Warcraft 3, Hot Pursuit 2.
    System:
XP pro OS (sevice pack 1) DirectX 9
    Athlon 1800
    512 MB RAM
    MSI nforce 2 Main board
    MSI GeForce 4 4200 ti 128 MB 8X AGP
    Thanks for any info.

well I "bugged" the game makers (EA) and the response is that the game doesn't suport Windows XP. Strange that the older nVidia 31.xx drivers work fine with the game. Also played it on my last machine which had XP and a ATI radeon video card. OH well who ever said Direct X was supposed to be backward compatible.
Too bad the older drivers don't work so well with the newer games.
