Need good screen sharing remote app like gotomypc

Not sure where this question belongs. I have trialed gotomypc and it is great with one exception. They do not support audio when using it for a mac to mac connection and I really need audio. So, what is the best application to use for remote computing?

Not sure if its the best, but I'm just checking out Logmein. They have a bunch of different solutions for remote access. For me, this one is the best - mostly because I can access my home mac from work on those rare occasions when I need to, but most of all - its free.

  • Screen Sharing/Remote Mgmt Recommendations... Timbuktu, ARD, Bomgar...?

Can you recommend a Screen Sharing and/or Remote Management solution to be used for remote support? I will need to connect with remote networks and control computers via Screen Sharing... Traditionally, I have used Timbuktu for remote support which allows me to pass through routers using NAT and to directly address any computer that's configured properly. Recently, I've started to use OSX's built-in Screen Sharing ability over the web as well.  However with the latter option, there is no easy way (that I've found) to address unique computers behind NAT?
Some solutions that I'm looking into:
    1) Timbuktu. A proven solution....  a little expensive (if we had no upgrade path), requires router port-forwarding....
         http://www.netopia.com/software/products/tb2/index.html
    2) Bomgar. A recent client, had new Windows hardware installed and the company that installed the system was using Bomgar for remote management. It's suppose to be an enterprise level solution but that's all I know....
         http://www.bomgar.com/
    3) Apple Remote Desktop (ARD). This was $300 bit it's only $80 now for an unlimited license.  Of course it's Mac only and seemingly low-priority for Apple and it may a little over-kill on the reports and management side. Creating installer packages seems unnecessarily complex when each client machine seems able to manage itself in terms of Software Update. Also, I don't see where this product can get past NAT. So, this could be an issue.  Some people mention that establishing a VPN is the answer to that equation but I'm looking for simplicity too.

    4) LogMeIn.  I have not used....  the Pro version is too much at $70 per computer per year....  but the Free one is....  FREE!
         https://secure.logmein.com/products/free/
    5) TeamViewer. I have used this a few times and it seemed to work as advertised.... This could be a compelling option.

So, what remote access solutions do you use and recommend...?
    Thanks,
    Robert

If you are doing remote support professionally, you may also want to consider GoToMyPC (which also Works on Macs).
LogMeIn.com and TeamViewer.com Free options are only for personal use.  If you are using them professionally, they they want you to pay.
Having covered my A..., I would say cross platform, TeamViewer.com is a good choice, as it gets through home routers, and provides file transfer (the Free LogMeIn.com does not provide file transfer).  TeamViewer.com can also deal with corporate firewalls (assuming corporate does not block the service).
Another way to approach this might also be using Hamachi (another service from LogMeIn.com) which can be used to easily create a Virtual Private Network between your system and the destination (getting through home routers), then just use treat the system as if it was local, and use Screen Sharing, VNC, RDC, CoRD, etc... without worrying about home routers, and such.  Can also do file sharing as if the system is local.  Where local does assume the broadband connections have reasonable bandwidth.
As for myself, I only remotely maintain my Mom, and I set that up long before many of the current offerings, and did all the messy port forwarding things at Mom's house so I could use VNC over secure ssh tunnels.  But if someone else in my family called asking for help, I would choose TeamViewer.com, as I think it would be the easiest for me to talk them through getting it up and running on their end.

  • Apple TV remote no longer working, unpairing is giving me resolution screen, lost Remote app control as well.

I've been trying to sort this out for a while; somehow my Apple TV is no longer homesharing with the rest of my network.  I had hoped to use my apple TV remote to re-activate the Remote Apps I have on my iPod, but the remote isn't responding.  I've tried unpairing, but if I press menu-rewind for six seconds, it sends me to the resolution screen instead, and the white light flashes repeatedly - I can't get the remote to accept the resolution settings, or get the cursor to even so much as move.  Extremely frustrating as I've been unable to make this work for a week and I don't drive (I'm disabled and housebound) so just popping into a shop somewhere to get it fixed is a slim-to-none chance of possibility.
    I really hope there's a better solution!

all apple remotes work out of the box
borrow the remote from the neighbors kid Eric that he got with his appletv or imac or macbook or the likes it works
or buy a new remote it works
borrow Erics remote and use it to setup remote app on an ios device that works too

  • After Clean Install of Yosemite, Screen Sharing & Remote Login are turned on in Sharing preferences

Do you guys know if this is a bug?
I created a custom USB Yosemite installer using the 'createinstallmedia' binary inside the Yosemite installer.
Booted iMac with this USB installer and proceeded to install Yosemite (fresh formatted drive). No problems.
When I log in however, and check the Sharing PreferencePane, both Screen Sharing and Remote Login are turned on.
I've tried this multiple times (repartitioning the drive each time and I have created the installer media twice).
I'm posting this I guess more as a report as the solution is simple enough (uncheck these services).
But it's definitely a security risk.

Just 2 minutes before I received your reply I solved the problem.  I have been running a software firewall (DoorStop X) on the Mac Pro.  It turns out that I had not allowed traffic over two ports necessary for Home Sharing– port 3689 and udp port 5353.  When I corrected this everything is back to normal.
I did the clean install because I've been having intermittent problems with several apps including Compressor, Safari, and to a lesser extent FCP.  I've been contemplating doing this for several months because of all the garbage that has collected on my system over several years since I last started from scratch.  I have a bad habit of installing things that add kext files and otherwise modify the OS.  I decided to get rid of all that stuff.  I'm glad I did.  All the problems I was having seem to have resolved.  Safari runs 3x faster than it ever has.  And I no longer have the headaches that Compressor was giving me.  I think I'll take better care of my system from now on.

  • Turning on Screen Sharing Remotely

In an effort to try to get Back to My Mac working, I read I had to turn off Remote Management and instead use Screen Sharing. I'm traveling right now, so in a completely boneheaded move, I used VNC to turn off Remote Management and wouldn't you know it - it's instantaneous. It knocked me off VNC so I couldn't turn on Screen Sharing. Is there any way to turn Screen Sharing on through the terminal command line? Or even turn VNCserver on temporarily so I can do this through the GUI?

Also, before copying files to server make sure ARD is turned off and will not start at boot:
    (From running '/System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/ kickstart -help')
    - Stop the Remote Management service and deactivate it so it will not start after the next computer restart.
    */System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/k ickstart -deactivate -stop*

  • Screen Sharing on Devices like Android and iOS

    Hi Guys,
I am wondering if there is any way to get a device like Motorola XOOM or iPad to do the screen sharing (as the publisher). I suppose the contrary (PC =>Tablet) is possible. Any comments on this?
We would like to enable this for an application we are working on, I would love to hear your comments on this.

  • Need Help with the Remote App

I am able to get this to work on my iMac at home but I was trying to help my dad get his remote App working and have not had any luck. Well, slight luck but only for about 1 minute. His computer is hard wired into the wifi router, ipod touch is wifi from same router. He uses CA Firewall (what Time Warner has as a perk to their road runner service). He has windows XP with the latest Microsoft, iTunes, and Remote software. Here is the problem, the iPod touch generates the pass code but the device list with the remote icon never appears. I got it working for 1 minute when I completely turned off the firewall but even with the firewall off it still then lost connection and couldnt find the library. Any ideas?? I am so confused. I made sure that iTunes was allowed through the firewall. I really want to get this working for him. Any help would be awesome!

Hrmm... nice job doing homework... Do you know, or can you find out, if port 3689 is open or blocked? If it's blocked, open it up. I believe this is the same port used for Music Sharing in iTunes, but it's also the port used by the Remote app.

  • How can I remotely enable Screen Sharing remotely on 10.8?

Is there a way to remotely enable Screen Sharing from another mac? I'm using 10.8.

I assume you mean by remote login.
To enable via SSH to an admin account:
    sudo launchctl load -F /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.screensharing.plist
    To disable:
    sudo launchctl remove com.apple.screensharing

  • Some help needed with Screen sharing.

Ok, so I am trying to set up screen sharing with a friend and I had a couple questions.
    1. If I am running Lion and my friend is Running Snow Leopard, is this possible to do?
    2. How will he connect to my computer for screen sharing? I have set up port fowarding on my router to my computer on port 3283.
    3. How will i connect to my Friends Computer?

I would prefer to use the built in Screen Share abilitys in Mac OS X but I might look into it. However, as this is just something me and my friend will use every once in a while I do not want to download a whole bunch of software.

  • File sharing or screen sharing-remotely

    Hello
I swear I accomplished this once and it was simple but I cannot do it now.
I want to connect with my sister's MacBook from my MacBook Pro. She is in Georgia, I am in NY. Obviously this is not a local network connection.
I know the basic set up and have done everything I can think of or have read about.
File Sharing and Screen Sharing are on, on both computers
    Firewalls Off. No password required.
In Screen Sharing > Computer Settings "anyone may request permission..." is checked.
    Allow access for All users.
In File Sharing > Options both AFP and FTP are checked.
Shared Folders: Public Folder...Users Everyone. And I also clicked the + and located her name in my address book and selected it. I was prompted for a password for her. So I entered "her" password, not mine. (Is that right?) After several failed attempts I tried repeating this but entering my password.
Next, I asked her on the phone to tell me what it says on her computer under File Sharing On. (afp://192...etc. OR the name listed after that.
Then I went to my Go > Connect To Server and entered that info. I tried the afp address; I tried the name; I tried variations on both; I tried going back over to Screen Sharing and entering the vnc://192...etc number as well as the browse for name.
Over and over and over. I also did all this from my desktop Mac Pro as well. But all I get is Connection Failed, the server "192...and so on may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check server name, bah, blah.
What am I missing? Anyone, please.

Hang on, are you implying that:
    aptop:~ admin$ sudo scp -Epr /Users/[email protected]:/Users/iristestlocaluser
    Password:
    Password:
    Password:
    Should be:
    aptop:~ admin$ sudo scp -Epr /Users/[email protected]:/Users/iristestlocaluser
    Password:

  • D drive. Is that true and do you need to install third party apps like AppCleaner?

I read in a popular tech blog that when you uninstall an app in OS X it can leave behind files that eventually can bog down your hard drive. Therefore you might opt for a third party cleaner. Is this true and if not how do you completely uninstall an app in Mountain Lion?

The uninstaller is the best thing to use. However, there are only a few locations where the app can install something that can continue to affect your Mac. Those will only be installed with an App that is installed with an installer. Apps you drag and drop to the Applications folder or those from the App Store will not install these things.
Drag and Drop or App Store apps can be dragged to the Trash or uninstalled in the App Store.
The locations are in either your own user Library or in the main "all users" Library.
The folders are LaunchAgents, LaunchDaemons, and StartupItems. Additionally, there may be something in your Login Items in your account in the Users & Groups system preference.
Very rarely, apps can install kernel extensions which are low-level modifications that will often cause problems, especially when updating your OS.
The uninstallers should get rid of anything they put in those places.
Always know how to uninstall an app before you install it.
I'm not a fan of things like AppZapper, AppCleaner, or any other uninstaller program as they merely look for things the might be related to the program and attempts to delete it. I would hope that they are designed well enough to avoid deleting system files in its hunt and destroy methodology, but I wouldn't trust them.
You don't need anything that purports to tune up, clean up, optimize, protect, perform periodic maintenance, or any other similar claim.

  • Please help needed with Screen Sharing

I've been using Leopards screen share successfully on my MBP, connecting to my iMac ever since Leopard was released.
Now it connects, but the screen just flashes and I can't do anything. When I watch my iMacs screen the sharing icon on the menu bar is also flashing. So it looks like the sharing session is connecting and disconnecting rapidly.
The firewall is open to all connections on both computers. I even tried re-formating my MBP, it fixed the problem for 2 days and the problem came back again.

Hi, I've also been having this problem since I upgraded to 10.5.6 on my machines. Before the upgrade, it was rock solid. Now when I connect, it flashes and drops, then starts over again.
I just discovered a way to get the connection to stay - TURN SCALING OFF
In my case I have a G5 with two screens attached. When I turn scaling off, it still drops the connection once, but then starts working fine.
    Hope this helps you.

  • Screen sharing Mac apps (that are not iChat)

I only have luck with iChat when I use my AirPort Extreme router. Using my neighboars lynksys router, it never works. Are they are Mac apps out there that will do what iChat does, but without the headaches? I'm looking for some good paid software.

  • PLEASE HELP, SOMEONE REMOTELY VIEWING/SCREEN SHARING MY MACBOOK?

Hi - I urgently need help from anyone who knows about this issue - I am a very basic macbook user, and don't really know about all the different programmes etc. I believe someone ( the guy who sold me the macbook, who told me he was a mac repair person and programmer) has been hacking into the computer, using the remote access - there is a programmed called SCREEN SHARING but I cannot access it - and a bunch of other files such as odsagent etc - not sure if these indicate he is using the screen sharing/ remote access to my mac.
The reason that I believe he is accessing the mac, is that he downloaded all the files, so would clearly have access to passwords etc, there were loads of his old files, that showed pictures of people saying " target", and old files showing he was studying comuter/ mac programming. The first time I went online all of a sudden the computer froze, and two green lights showed on the num lock key and the shift key I think, the two keys were frozen, and the keyboard basically wouldnt respond, but the activity continued on the screen. This has happened a number of times since then, usually just randomly the keyboard freezes, and if you wait a while it goes back to normal - the mouse works fine, then one day it keep sort of freezing/ getting stuck/ pausing for no reason - the next day its fine again. He put in a load of software, which he has obviously been able to get round the need of liscening numbers, as he did not provide me with them. one day I saw a name "macbook pro" suddenly appear, and that it was tryin to connect/ share or something - this has never happened to me before with my old mac- it was like another computer was connecting/ sharing with my computer without my permission - this was when I was online. This has not happened since.
I am scared he is accessing the computer, because these things that happened, and because there is loads and loads of files and programmes, which sound suspicious, i dont know what they do, and I just have this dogey feeling about this guy, and the fact that there is screen viewing/ remote management files etc which I cant access, but I am not sure if they are being accessed.
PLEASE HELP - I FEEL LIKE MY PRIVACY IS BEING INVADED - I was speaking to my family on Skype and the green lights came on/ it froze, I continued with the conversation, but later I felt like he might have been watching.
If anyone can recommend an expert in the London area, that can check the mac to see there is nothing on there that is being used to remotely control/ screen share my mac, I would be very grateful - its just horrible using your computer, and always being worried someone is invading your privacy, and and downloading your files etc.
Sorry if I sould paranoid, but I have a strong feeling something is not right here.
Many thanks for your help in advance.

Since you don't know much about computers, disconnect your internet (wireless or wired) to prevent future unwanted access. While it is smart to contact Apple Communities, this is a criminal matter and you should consider taking the matter to the police. People like this will not stop with you. You need to list the private data that may be stolen and take action (cancel credit cards, change passwords, bank accounts, phone numbers, whatever you have cause to be worried about). If you can afford it, buy a new hard drive, remove the old one, and install OS X from scratch. Give your old hard drive to the cops. Make sure you turn the Firewall on (click the Apple up on the toolbar top left > System Preferences > Security) and uncheck any "Sharing" options (System Prefernces > Sharing). This event you are experiencing is unfortunate, and rare, but with a pro-active attitude you will come through it fine - and wiser.
    EDIT
dgambler is right in that by purchasing a Snow Leopard disk (presuming you don't already have one) and performing a fresh install (it is easy) is a sure way to "take back" the controls of your Mac. You will need to study online tutorials for "wiping the drive" rather than a simple install. But you should let the police look at the hard drive before you do that - they will be able to see exactly what this person did.

  • ITunes, iPad, Remote app Home Sharing Problems. Please help!

So I have my 13" Macbook Pro with the latest version of iTunes installed (10.5.2)
I also have a 32GB Wifi iPad 2 with iOS (5.0.1) with the Remote app installed.
I am so frustrate with this stupid Home Sharing. I followed the directions the app gave me beginning with turning on Home Sharing on iTunes on my MacBook with my account. I then used the same account to turn on Home Sharing on my iPad from the Remote app. I wait a bit, and wait some more, and yet my iTunes library isn't shown in my Remote app like it is in my iPhone.
I've tried to find the answer to my problem via Google and these Apple Support Communities, but with no fix.
I wish you could just connect your device to the computer and punch in the 4-digit code like they used to have you do.
    Please help! Thanks in advance.

Try turning Home Share off then on on the MacBook Pro and then check Remote App to see if now appears and you can connect - for me it works but eventually I will have to repeat the process to get it working again.
The four digit code method still works.
