Need Help 27inch iMac died.

I tried to fix the drive in recovery mode without success.  Now trying to save data from the iMac but my Macbook cannot connect to the drive when I connect firewire.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Did you put the iMac in Target Disk mode? Connect the FireWire cable to your MacBook and hold the T key while your iMac is starting up. Then, open a Finder window on the MacBook and you will see the iMac's hard drive in the sidebar.
If you can't see it, the hard drive is damaged and it has to be replaced. You need to use a file recovery service to get the files back, and make backups of your files onto an external drive to prevent this

  • Need help with iMac OSX backup

    Hi,
I currently have a mac book air running osx 10.8.
And i recently purchased a imac running osx 10.8.
I need help with the backup feature between my imac and macbook air.
I work with excel files a lot, using Microsoft office for mac.
so basically what i want is to have a 2 way backup between my imac and macbok air.
That is, when i make any changes, create or delete a file in either of the system, i want the other system to make the change automatically.
For example when i make changes to a spreadsheet (excel file) on my imac, i want the same to be updated automatically on my macbook air, and vice versa.
I want both the machines to have the same files, updating the files as they get modified. or deleting if its deleted on any one of the system. Like a 2 way sync.
Kindly let me know if theres any way to do this.  or something similar that can help me, like i mainly require the excel spreadsheets to be updated, system files, other libraries are not important.
I can also put all my files in a single folder if thats required.
Ps. Both the machines are connected on the same network, and i can also hook a external drive for the backup purpose if required.
I searched google for softwares and couldnt find the appropriate ones.
    Any help would be appreciated.
Let me know if you require any more info on this.
    Thanks
    Gaurav.

  • Need help with iMac intel desktop - Mac mail consistently going OFFLINE

I need help with Mac mail - it is frequently going "offline" and requesting me to "take all accounts online". My internet is working. It's been checked, checked and checked. Sometimes it just takes a reboot of the system and the modem to kick it in and make the little triangle symbol go away, but should I have to reboot daily? I have the Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 installed. Is there a bug here or am I supposed to upgrade to Mavericks? Any help is most appreciated.

For me this is an issue caused by my email service provider.  When they are slow to respond or to accept the password Mail takes that as a password rejection, and prompts me to reenter password, and eventually goes offline.

  • I need help, my iMac is swamped with video data,  1 TB of space and 950 GB is used by my video data! Help... its getting ugly

I have a 1 TB IMac, 950 GB of my iMac HD have been eaten alive by my Video Recordings of family events using my canon vixia hf 100 HD recorder.  I cannot use my computer now, due to lack of space on the hard drive.  I now own two 2 tb external hard drives.  All I want to do is make 2 DVD copies of each video event from imovie and have one back up of each event on one of my externals and another backup in my time machine which is on the other external.  It takes so long to transfer data  from my canon vixia hf 100 through imovie to a DVD.  I have swamped my Imac HD, and can't even burn a dvd to loosen the byte load.  Can i transfer my whole iMovie library to my free 2tb external and utilize it to maintain and store all iMovie data?????
    Help!

Depending on which version of iMovie you have it could be very easy, when you attach the external hdd to the mac it will appear in iMovie as one of the 'locations' where projects/events can reside. And you would move them ONLY from within iMovie, not outside of it. This will help keep any current projects and the events associated with them from breaking.
This is how it would work, attach the external hdd. Open iMovie go to the Projects Browser. Make sure you can see the external hdd in the list of devices. You then can drag the project directly over the icon of the external hdd. iMovie will ask you, do you want to move Events associated with this project? Go ahead and say yes and it will move the Events over too. So you might ask what about the events not already in a project? Well you can do the same thing down in the Event Browser too. Only you want to make sure iMovie knows you want to see all the hard drives attached to your computer not just the internal one. So there's an icon in the top right corner of the Event browser called Group Events by Disk. It has a cartoon icon of a hard drive on it. Just click it once to turn this on. You should now see the external hdd in the list. Drag all your Events onto that disk. So now for the moment of truth,. . .
Go up to your project browser and open up one of the projects FROM the external hdd and skim it, edit, add do something with it. Switch to a different project on the external try the same thing. Go down to the Event browser and check out some events on the External HDD as well. It should all be the same as it was on the Internal HDD. Last Step: Delete the now duplicate/original Events/Projects on the Internal HDD. You have perfect working copies on the external and do not need to keep the originals on the Internal HDD. Any time from this point forward you will only open Events/Projects from the external hdd and save back to that location. And iMovie will take care of the rest of it for you.

  • I need help with imac g4 flat panel download of leopard it tells me it cannot load on the system.

i bought a refurbished imac g4 flat panel. it is supposed to have an os but it only comes up with a question mark. I put leopard in and it tells me it cannot load on this compuert. system is 800mhz and 60g hd and 768ram.   i have tried to do a fix through the utility and it says it does not exit and kicks me out.  ANY HELP IS A PLUS.

Try holding down the option key then power on. This brings up the startup manager. Click on your hd. Click on right arrow key.
Sometimes if volumes don't appear in Startup Manager (what you get when you hold down the Option key at startup), you need to reset the Mac's PRAM, NVRAM, and Open Firmware. Shut down the Mac, then power it up, and before the screen lights up, quickly hold down the Command, Option, P, and R keys, until the Mac has chimed twice more after the powerup chime. Then, before the screen lights up, hold down Command-Option-O-F until the Open Firmware screen appears. Then enter these lines, pressing Return after each one:
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
"The reset-all command should restart your Mac. If so, you have successfully reset the Open Firmware settings."

You have got get in open firmware to hack the mhz to be higher for the install.  That is change what the machine reports as the mhz to be a higher number.  Details:

This works on Tiger but I assume it would work on Leoard.

I tend to think dashboard is neat, but not neccesary for my everyday workflow.
it is possible to enable and disable it as needed,
by entering the following commands into the terminal:
    -- To turn Dashboard off:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES
    -- To turn Dashboard on:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean NO
-- You have to restart the Dock after making either change for it to take effect:

  • I need help making a die cut

I work for a non-profit and have some experience with illustrator. I've come up with an idea for a fundraising brochure, it uses our logo and requires a die line. Can someone please help me get started? I have figured out that I need to make a new layer and make the line a different color but when it comes to making the actual line (odd shape) I cannot get it to look smooth. Also I would l have photos that will go on some pages and text on others, do I just put these under the die line?

    Thank you.
I'm trying to use the pen tool. The shape I'm trying to make is a bit complicated. I've attached our logo, I'm using the swoop part. So there will be a point at the top left then it was follow the swoop down to the right and make a point on the bottom right and back up on the left. The side lines will be curved. Does that make sense? This will be a fold able brochure so ever other page will have to be a mirror image.
I've drawn a line around the image but I don't know how to make the line smooth, because of the anchors it looks a bit off. Then I guess I don't know how to do the fold able part, do I just make a new page for each one or do they have to be connected in illustrator as they will be on paper?
    Thank you

  • New Graphic Designer...Need help on iMac Purchase

    Hi all.
I am an aspiring graphic designer who needs to purchase an iMac that will fulfill my needs. I have a limited budget, but I would rather spend the money now then have to spend more in the future. I would like to get some ideas on how much memory/ram I should get. Also, I want to hear about the 21inch screen vs. the 27 inch screen.
Primarily I will be using this computer for graphic designer purposes, so I will be using CS4 Indesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. I will also be using the computer for downloading/playing music and movies. I do have an external hard drive but I think I should have a decent amount of memory installed on the desktop.
If anyone has any suggestions for me on what the best setup should be please let me know.
    Thanks
    -T

Your in luck! the iMac is perfect for CS4 and iTunes. 27-inch is perfect for HD video. And in CS4 the added screen realestate means increased performance. The display has a really great view angle, and sense it's LED back lit, the display is super bright/sharp.
The 17 comes with 1 TB of store and 4GB of ram. this is more then enough. if your working in very large files you may want to spend the 200 dollars to double your ram. that's huge bump for CS4. I would also suggested the 250 dollar upgrade to get double the storage space. 2 TB of space can be huge if you have a large movie collection. 150 dollars can get you double the video ram. If you like games this is a huge jump in performance. It will also help with things like layering in photoshop.
of corse you can always buy an external hard drive and more ram later, but your going to spend more of it. The Video card upgrade, 150, is some thing you can only do when buying the computer.
Sense your doing major work you may want to get a 2TB back up drive.
Also your talking about spending 2,149.00 on a computer. I assume your planning to hold onto the computer for at least a couple of years. Witch is why I would recommend Apple Care. It covers your computer for defect and natural wear. It's only 169 dollars.
If you had to replace one part, in 3 years, you would spend more then the apple care. Also Apple Care also get you 3 years of phone support. Normally it's 50 dollars a call. I don't know about you, but I have allot more then just 3 questions in 3 years. so it more then pays for it self.
You could also take advantage of the printer rebate. http://www.apple.com/promo/ when I bought my macbook pro having an up to date free printer was an amazing deal. It might be useful for your CS4 work. For quick scans and work prints.
You can also get 30% off mobile me. It's a great way to sync your contacts/calendars between your old and new computer. As well as an iphone, if you have one. I use mobile me to throw my PDF / Prints online. That way my clients can quickly check out and approve changes. I also use it to host my portfolio. Ones I had all my art in my computer, it took me like 20 minutes iWeb to publish my portfolio online using mobile me. It's been a great asset in self promotion; and it looks better then my friend website. And he payed some guy 800 dollar to make his website.
check out one to one. For a 100 dollars you can bring your computer into any apple store, and they will move your documents, desktop, iphoto, itunes over to your new computer.

  • Need help with Imac G5 Model A1145 for resetting to factory settings

Hi - I am new to the Mac world.  I recently inherited an iMac G5 Model A1145.  I am trying to reset the hard drive to factory settings.  It came with no discs whatsoever.  I've tried to push the option button upon restart or command + R but I never get a Disk Utility screen.
This iMac has no CD drive with it (although I do have a USB CD drive that I could use if necessary).
Does anyone know how I can reset the hard drive back to factory settings??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you

"command + R but I never get a Disk Utility screen.": These old iMacs don't have this feature.
you'll need a disc. If you don't have any, you'll need to find one: http://www.macworld.com/article/2101301/advice-from-an-apple-tech-how-to-get-old -mac-os-x-install-discs.html

  • Need Help with iMac 350 - Won't boot - keyboard or mouse not working!

    Hello,
I've scoured the web looking for answers, and can't find any, so maybe someone here would be kind enough to help. I'm working on an imac 350 blueberry for my sister and I'm having all sorts of trouble.
She bought it last week, it started up (8.6 os) no problem. Powered up and down a few times, then all of a sudden, it won't boot. I'm currently getting blinking folder/happymac/question mark when trying to start up.
Here's the big problem - the keyboard and mouse do not work now. I've tried three different mice and three keyboards and no dice with any of them. I have the 8.6 CD from her previous imac (bondi), and I can hear it spinning, but there is no way to start up from cd.
I've also tried 2 other hard drives with the same results.
Tried resetting CUDA on logic board, taking out battery, no change. Bought new battery- no change.
I would love to at least get the keyboard working to see if I can even startup from cd, anyone have any clues on how to get it working? The strange thing is that the keyboard has a power on button, and it works to start the thing up, but dies when it tries to boot. Sometimes I just get a grey screen with the pointer icon, and I can move the pointer with the mouse for a second or two, then no response.
I appreciate any help or suggestions on locating the issues!
    Thank you!

When I said "but dies when it tries to boot" and "..then no response." I meant that the keyboard works to power up the computer, but won't work for anything else. So, I am figuring that the usb ports are supplying power to the keyboard and mouse, but the usb ports aren't relaying information from the keyboard or mouse.
How do you know the mouse isn't working? Won't you have to wait until later in the boot to tell?
The poweron key is a special case. I think that it works by lowering/changing the voltage on one of the usb cables. I read about this somewhere. Anyway, this function was eliminated from later usb keyboards and macs. Maybe a working power button doesn't mean what you think.
I would love to boot into open firmware
Could you try powering up from the machine? Is there a power button on the lower right of the machine?
Have you tried this key combo?
    commandoption+of
The letters are in lower case. Hold all down then poweron the machine. I'd poweron from the machine as apposed to the keyboard.
You could try another usb keyboard.
We actually did boot up the computer several times with it upside down. Not for any reason, except it's become a real PIA to flip it over every two minutes to start it, then take it apart and boot again. When booting either upside down or right side up it shows the same thing - blinking folder w/finder icon and question mark.
Yes, I agree. You could try removing the clear plastic around the bottom of the machine. At least you will not have to slide in the carriage. Note. The tv portion will still be surrounded by plastic! Don't remove the plastic around the tv!
Hope I am not interfering with Richard and his comments.
Richard: Is this the orginal keyboard? When did Apple get rid of the poweron key from the keyboard? My iMac 600 didn't have the key and my iMac 233 does.

is there buttons i will have to press to activate the monitor?
    Thanks!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First of all, I recommend you to reset the SMC, just in case it's a settings problem > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
If it doesn't work, and as an external display doesn't work, I suspect that the graphic card is damaged. In this case, there's not too much you can do, apart from taking the iMac to an Apple Store or reseller and get the computer repaired. Note that the whole logic board has to be replaced because the graphic card is soldered, so it will be an expensive repair. You should consider the option of get a new PC or Mac

  • Need Help with iMac G4     No Dial Tone

    I am working on a friend's iMac G4 800 Mhz. Has Mac X 10.2.3 OS. Internal Apple 56K V.90 Modem.
The modem gives error "no dial tone". This just recently started happening for no apparent reason. Tried different phone cable and tested the wall jack for dial tone on a connected phone. All tests OK.
This modem is "built in". Is this problem fixable? Is it a hardware or a settings issue?
The only fix I can think of is an external modem, but would like to fix the internal one if possible.
Any ideas? Any and all advice is appreciated. I'm new to Macs, so I have limited knowledge of the system.
    Thanks,

Hi Kirk, not much to go on there for me, sorry.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Or an errant process eating up RAM.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
