Need Help 5400 or 7200

Have a huge project that has jumped to start this week and really have no time to wait on Apple for a 17inch 7200rpm computer.
Can I work and edit on a 5400 drive. I would honestly be working off externals all the time.
The project is in HD 720p off the HVX.
Thanks!

Michele, you can and will do just fine with a 100GB or 120GB hard drive. I'm speaking from experience and know first hand. If I may add a sensible remark please. Most professional editors prefer a PowerBook when moving from site to site or they're affixed to their Power Mac G5's or lately all of the above AND the new iMacs running on a network.
I personally have a G-Tech/G-RAID 500GB along with my PowerBook. You can grab a solution from G-Tech or Lacie for the record. Although
Although it has a 120GB HD it's not the fastest drive available. That's where the 500GB G-RAID (or 320GB & 800GB for that matter) comes in, and with blistering speeds too. Check out G-Tech's their website and check out Lacies website to. Lacie has a 1TB "Bigger" HD and the 1.5TB "Biggest" HD's. Both makers have designs that are supposed to compliment both a PowerBook and Power Mac G5 - and they do just that very very well!
The only bad part of this equation? Apple will no longer include FireWire 800 on the "MacBook Pro" or any upcoming products! Now we'll have to go out and BUY a FireWire 800 Card.
I hope I gave you an answer, but, I also wanted to give you an explanation to. Jim Galullo

I need to find the greatest grant year for the grant by a period parameter.
once i find the greatest year i need to check the value of period 14 for that grant for the previous year and add it to the budget amount for that grant. however if their is an entry in the greatest year for period 00 then i need to ignore the period 14 of previous year and do this calculation current period +(current period - greatest year 00)
hope that makes sense so in other words with the new data above. if i was querying period two of grant year 11. i would end up with $800
because the greatest year is 11 it contains a period 0 with amount of $400 so my total should be
    period 2 amount $ 600
    period 0 amount $ 400 - period 2 amount of $600 = 200
    600+200 = $800
if i query period 1 of grant 360055 i would just end up with 800 of grnt year 10.
i have tried to modify that query you supplied to me with no luck. I have tried for several day but im embarrased to say i just can get it to do what im trying to do .
can you please help me out.
here is the query supplied by frank kulash who gracefully put this together for me.

    ;Miguel

    Hi, Miguel,
Are you waying that, when the greatest year that has :given_period also has period='00' (or '0', or whatever you want to use), then you want to double the budget from the given_period (as well as subtract the budget from the '00', and not count the pevious year's '14')? If so, add another condition to the CASE statement which decides what you're SUMming:
    WITH     got_greatest_year     AS
         SELECT       TO_NUMBER (fgl_grnt_year)     AS grnt_year
         ,       fgl_period

                      END
                    ) OVER ()     AS greatest_year

  • HOW DO YOU GUYS DEAL WITH APPLE.. SO CONFUSING...NEED HELP WITH SPECS FOR PURCHASE OF IMAC 21.5

Hi guys, been reading your forums, blogposts, etc and am getting more confused.  I'm just a video girl trying to produce meaningful content through web videos for small to mid sized businesses and want to come over from the dark side.
Good news,, I dont need a super giant system,  I do simple editing for web videos, minimal graphics, no motion graphics, no animation etc. currently using CS4, will probably end up with 5.5.
I want to get imac 21.5 or 27 if i have to..  So here's the question we all have,,, what do I really need besides an Apple fairy godmother to figure this crazy stuff out?????
I want to be able to have firewire add on, but the rest is what I need help with.   So i've been looking at cs6 specs, even though im not there yet, eventually will be,, so just need to run cs4 now and build from there.  I also want to eventually move to final cut down the road so I want imac able to upgrade to final cut.
WHAT DO I REALLY NEED MINIMALLY FOR NOW?  WHAT CAN I GET LATER IF i CHOOSE TO DO MORE AND NEED MORE POWER?
    cs6:
Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support
    Mac OS X v10.6.8, v10.7, or v10.8**
    4GB of RAM (8GB recommended)
4GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on a volume that uses a case-sensitive file system or on removable flash storage devices)
Additional disk space required for preview files and other working files (10GB recommended)
    1280x900 display
7200 RPM hard drive (multiple fast disk drives, preferably RAID 0 configured, recommended)
    OpenGL 2.0–capable system
DVD-ROM drive compatible with dual-layer DVDs (SuperDrive for burning DVDs; Blu-ray burner for creating Blu-ray Disc media)
QuickTime 7.6.6 software required for QuickTime features
Optional: Adobe-certified GPU card for GPU-accelerated performance
Any responses would be great.  I know you guys are busy answering the really high end tech questions

All the current iMac models (both 21.5" and 27" with OS X Mt. Lion 10.8) will run CS4, 5.5 and 6 just fine.  They will also run Final Cut Pro X just fine.  Ditto for most any application you may want to use.
Below are some notes (specific to your apparent requirements) that may help you with your purchase decision:
Notes on purchasing a 21.5" iMac
All 21.5" iMacs come with 8GB RAM but you cannot add more later.  I strongly suggest getting the maximum RAM (16GB) when you order the iMac.
The basic hard drive is a 1TB 5400rpm drive.  It will work fine with Adobe CS but you will probably want the added speed of the optional 1TB Fusion drive for better performance. Some people will recommend/argue for one of the optional SSD drives instead, but they are very expensive and still only come in relatively small capacities - I don't recommend the SSD drives.  Get the Fusion drive and spend any extra money on a good external hard drive for backup and/or extra storage instead of an SSD.
Notes on purchasing a 27" iMac
All 27" iMacs come with 8GB RAM and you can add more later, up to 32GB
The basic hard drive is a 1TB 7200rpm drive - it will be fine with Adobe CS.  There are upgrade options to a 3TB 7200rpm drive or a 1TB or 3TB fusion drive - these will be fine also.  There are also SSD drive options, but I do not recommend them. (Same comments as above.)
Notes on all the current iMacs
iMacs no longer come with built-in CD/DVD drives.  If you need one, you will need to purchase the Apple Superdrive accessory drive ($79)
All of the iMac graphic processors (GPU's) are compatible with Adobe CS 4, 5.5, 6
It is very difficult to impossible to change or upgrade the hard drive later on, so don't buy low-end thinking you can add a better internal hard drive later.
Be aware that Macs always come with the latest (most recent) version of OS X.  And OS X Mavericks (10.9) is due to be released soon (in the next month or two).  There is no guarantee that the older Adobe CS 4 or 5.5 versions will run on OS X Mavericks.  If you cannot upgrade to CS 6 in the near future, you may want to purchase now rather than after OS X Mavericks is released.
For what it's worth, I'd recommend the 27" iMac if your budget can afford it.  You will appreciate the larger screen size and added capabilities over the years you will use the computer.

  • Where do I find my Hard Drive info ? i.e. (5400 or 7200)

I am looking in System Profiler and can't find any info about my HD.
Under ATA it says there is no ATA installed.
I have a macbook pro 17" 500gb but I need to know if it is 5400 or 7200.
    Thanks

It's not on your Mac. Find the model number per my previous info then get the spec sheet from the drive manufacturer's web site. If you did not specially order the 7200 RPM drive then you have a 5400 RPM drive. You can open the drive compartment and see if the information is printed on the drive's data label.
As I said here and before if you have a stock model the drive is 5400 RPM.

  • Portable external raid - should I get 5400 or 7200 rpm?

    Hi,
I'm in need of a portable external raid 1 for live data protection. I do illustration work in photoshop and I use bridge to access and view files and reference. I would like to write all my files and read all my files from an external raid 1 and I am wondering if I should get a 5400 or 7200 rpm setup.
My concern is read and write speeds.
My portable setup is a mbp 2.16 intel core duo. I'm thinking of getting the g raid mini 2.
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks for the response.
To clarify my question though -
    1. I'm wondering if either will be fast enough to work off of - I'm planning on keeping the internal drive clean and all data would reside on the raid(so no incremental backups will be needed).
    2. will the difference between 5400 and 7200 be worth the difference in price - ie. lag time or a noticeable speed difference.
    Thanks

any suggestions we the following requirements:
The most value for the littlest amount of money.  Must support DX8.1.  I have $310.00 in the parts right now and don't really want to go over $450.00.
Back to setup.  I need help with the order to install drivers and software and versions.  In addition, were can I get these versions.  Emphasis on stable computer,  I don't game very much but will venture into a few flight simulators soon.
    Any help greatly appreciated
    David Thomas

    David,
The only change would be the Power Supply.  Get if you can an Antec TruePower.  You can get a True330W for around $55.00 and it is well worth it if you are going to upgrade from onboard graphics in the next week or so.
The GeForce4 Ti4200 is the best bang for the buck at them moment, and they are getting hard to find in the 64Mb 4X Version.  If you can get one for $125.00 you are doing very well and will be very happy with your computer.
    Good Luck,
    Richard

  • 5400 vs 7200

Does a 5400 rpm internal drive work as well as a 7200?

For the kind of data rates that AppleTV needs, a 5400 rpm drive will be more than adequate provided your network streaming works well now - AppleTV officially can only play 5Mbps streams, and I'd imagine most modern 5400 drives would offer well over 10MB/s rates (being quite conservative).
Slower drives will also be slower if you needed to backup a large volume of data to a newer faster drive. Not such a chore with 100Gb of data but once you're nearing the TB levels the extra delay will add up to a few hours perhaps - but personally I feel this is the sort of thing you can do with the machine unattended when you go out/to work/overnight etc., as it will still take hours with a large volume of data regardless.
When I choose external drives my main criteria are usually a balance of:
1 - cost per GB - if it ticks the other boxes I see no need to pay more/GB
2 - is it big enough/fast enough for the job in question
3 - design/looks - some devices are butt ugly or take up too much room (is there a power switch if you don't want it on all the time?)
4 - brand - tend to go for WD, Seagate, Samsung drives (I avoid Maxtor and Hitachi/IBM - as I've previously had failures but that's anecdotal). I also like minimalist Freecom units with black Alu cases.
5 - avoid known lemons from reading user reviews - any drive might fail as they're mechanical, but occasionally some makes/models/batches are just more prone to it
If using more than 1 external drive design becomes important or everything looks a mess. The older upright Seagate (brown/amber light) devices I have look ugly but work well, but they could be a bit more stable - bought a new 1TB Segate the other day and cost cutting has really taken place and I wouldn't risk trying to have it stand upright as the stand is so flimsy. Case is thin and it's much noisier too. My current preference is the black WD MyBook devices which look smart and can be stood side by side, however my local PC World seems to be cycling away from WD over to Seagate again. (Many of these are 7200 rpm devices).
Bottom line, 5400 rpm will be fine for AppleTV, make sure you have enough capacity - you will need more eventually though.
The AppleTV hard drive is probably only a 4200 rpm speed btw.

  • Need help to develop Pythagoras theorem-

Pardon my ASCII art, but I've always liked the following, simple, geometric proof:
         a                   b
    ---------------------------------------+
    |       |                                |
    a|   I   |              II                |
    |       |                                |
    ---------------------------------------+

    b|  IV   |              III               |
    |       |                                |
    |       |                                |
    |       |                                |
    |       |                                |
    |       |                                |
    |       |                                |
    ---------------------------------------+It almost goes without saying that I+II+III+IV == (a+b)^2, and II == IV == a*b,
    I == a*a and III == b*b, showing that (a+b)^2 == a^2+a*b+a*b+b^2.
I hope the following sketch makes sense, stand back, ASCII art alert again:     a                   b

    |  VIII                   .              |
    ---------------------------------------+
a                    bThe total area equals (a+b)^2 again and equals the sum of the smaller areas:
(a+b)^2 == V+VI+VII+VIII+IX. Let area IX be c^2 for whatever c may be.
    V+VII == VI+VIII == a*b, so a^2+b^2+2*ab= c^2+2*a*b; IOW a^2+b^2 == c^2
Given this fundamental result, the others can easily be derived from this one,
or did I answer a question you didn't ask?
    kind regards,

  • Need help to open audios attached in a PDF file

    Hello
I just need help. I have ordered a reviewer online that has audios and texts in a pdf file. I was told to download the latest adobe reader on my computer. I have done the same thing on my ipad mini. I am not so technical with regards to these things. Therefore I need help. I can access the audios on my computer but not on my ipad.
I want to listen to audios with scripts or texts on them so i can listen to them when i am on the go. I was also informed that these files should work in any device. How come the audios doesnt work on my ipad.
Please help me on what to do.
    Thanks

Audio and video are not currently support on Adobe Reader. :-<
You need to buy a PDF reader that supports them. My suggestion is PDF Expert from Readdle ($US 9.99)

Your Touch is working correctly. Currently, without unsupported third party hacks, the Touch has NO disc mode. It will only show up in iTunes.
how do i put programes and games in my ipod touch
Right now, you don't. The SDK is scheduled to be released in Feburary. Then developers will be able to write programs that will be loadable.
