Need help adding originals from iphoto library to Aperture

Hey all,
I have a Macbook Pro 2010 17" i7 that I use for Aperture projects. Previously, my setup worked like this: I was running Snow Leopard, with both Aperture and iPhoto installed. I had all of my photo masters/originals in my iPhoto library, and I referenced them to my Aperture library.
I recently upgraded to a dual SSD+HDD setup and performed a clean install with Mavericks. What I would like to do now - since I don't use iPhoto anymore and I use Aperture exclusively for my photo projects - is to move, not copy, my iPhoto masters into either my current Aperture library, or a new one, if that's necessary. As a test run, I had already consolidated most of my photos before I did the upgrade, but it created many duplicates in my Aperture library: the master copy, and the referenced copy.
Once I get everything moved to Aperture, I will simply delete the iPhoto library, since I won't use it, and all the originals will now reside in the Aperture library. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas on how to do this, I'd love to hear them!

Thanks for the prompt and helpful reply Najinsky!
I originally imported the photos using "Import files" not the actual iPhoto library.
Well I did originally use the Consolidate Original menu item - I can confirm that - but I had done that as a test before I upgraded my hard drive and installed Mavericks.
Additionally, before I tried the Consolidate Original option, I had tried merging the iPhoto library to Aperture via the File->Import->Library and selecting the iPhoto library. I followed the instructions from the Apple KB article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5296
Because I merged the iPhoto library first, and then Consolidated, this is why I originally had duplicates.
Since the clean install of Mavericks however, I have selected all of my photos in Aperture and selected the Consolidate Original option, and it now appears that everything has changed from referenced to managed. I have also noticed that the Aperture library filesize has gotten much bigger, but the iPhoto library filesize has remained the same size. Wouldn't it have shrunk if I moved the originals to Aperture? I did select Move, not Copy from the Consolidate Original menu.

  • Desperately needs help burning DVD from iPhoto

I am using iPhoto 6.0.6. I desperately need help burning a DVD of a slide show that I created for my daughter's wedding.
I put several songs together by opening them and then combining them using QuickTime Pro. I imported the audio into iTunes and created a slide show using iPhoto. The slide show is perfect! The slides are finally in sink with the music just as I want them! But I don't know how to burn the slide show as a DVD.
I tried exporting the video from iPhoto to my computer, but at the end of the export, I get this message: please note that the music included in the slideshow can only be played on authorized machines. And when I try to play the video (after the export), most of the music on the video cannot be heard. When I try to authorize my machine, I am told that it's already authorized.
If someone would send detailed instructions on how to proceed, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Greg

Is your problem the DRM audio tracks you purchased from iTunes store?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Need Help with importing from iphoto

I am having trouble importing from iphoto it will allow my pics to show up but if I try to drag them to the frame below it will begin to import and then an error message will pop up say import error (-4960) what do i do to fix this.

    Hi bline:
Memory should be a problem (as you have already figured out).
Perhaps you should do some basic maintenance first:
Repair permissions (if you don't know how-look here:)
    http://www.ncmug.org/tips/repair_permissons.html
Perhaps download a free program to clean up unneeded files:
    Cache Out X
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14850&vid=106967
Also, you said "It's letting me see my title options but not apply them. I also don't know how to get that black page in there."
You just drag the titles or transitions to the timeline-no need to "apply".

  • When exporting images from iPhoto library to Aperture 3 library the highlights go red and the shadow area goes blue.  This happen to all images in the Aperture 3 library, why?

For some reason all the images in Aperture 3 library have had their highlights go red and the shadow area goes blue.  I can correct them one at a time with contrast control.  This just happen on its on after I uploaded MOuntain Lion.  Now when I go to transfer images from iPhoto this happens.  The images are all right in iPhoto but this is not the case with Apeerture.  I have 15,000 images in Aperture 3 and I can't afford the time to correct them one at a time.  What is it that I did to cause this problem?

You have "Highlight Hot and Cold Areas" turned on.
Toggle this on/off from the View menu.
Thresholds are set at "Aperture➞Preferences➞Advanced".  (I have mine set to 100% ~ it's not clear what the scale is.)

  • Is there a workflow from iPhoto/iOS to Aperture 3

What I need is a workflow from iPhoto/iOS to Aperture 3, such as
    1. import images to iPad
    2. rate & modify pictures
    3. import to Aperture 3 the original images incl. rating and modifications (but not any modified copies)
I understood that's only possible between iPhoto apps on iOS devices - true?
Any (not too fancy) workaround available?
    Thanks for every hint.

  • Help! I'm too scared to erase my iPhoto library in Aperture, but I need to!

Is it safe to delete iPhoto library from Aperture if I chose to save it in their current location when I did the import?
I have already erased two events from the iPhoto Library in Aperture and they still show when I open iPhoto...but I'm too scared...There are like 20,000 photos. I chose to import all the Library because I wanted to have all in Aperture, but now the library is so big that when I open another application that has to search within Aperture's library it takes hours....
    Thanks for your help....

Ah the +delete or not to delete question+.....
From the first part of your post I believe you're saying that when you imported your iPhoto library into Aperture you told Aperture to leave the masters in the iPhoto Library. But then you wrote " I chose to import all the Library because I wanted to have all in Aperture" which sounds like you moved the masters into Apertures library.
Just to be sure you first enter Browser mode then select the Photos icon in the Library inspector, which will bring up all the photos in your library. Now create a filter add the rule *File Status* and in the pulldown select Managed. This will select all images in your library were the master is in the Aperture library. If you left the masters in the iPhoto library when you imported them then you should't see any images, If you do see images here that means that these masters are in the Aperture library and deleting the library would be bad.
If nothing shows up you could delete the library but deleting it is so final. Having a backup would be a good thing just in case.

  • I need to shrink down my iPhoto Library

I need to shrink down my iPhoto Library -
I'm currently working with iPhoto 09' on my supervisor's iMac running Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). He's in desparate attempt to try and free space on his hard drive. Through Finder iPhoto reads over 340+ GB in size, but through iPhoto itself it reads half that at around 125+ GB since I had last checked. I've been researching online forums and I'm aware of 'show package contents' and how iPhoto will double up due to modified images, etc. Also, through every forum people have explained to not alter the structure of iPhoto as more than likely it will corrupt my library and make it non-useable.
To add more details of my situation, I've been using GoodSync to sync his iPhoto library to an external hard drive periodically which for the most part has been working. The last sync I had conducted was actually taking additional hard drive space which I had to stop it from continuing. Contacting GoodSync support confirmed with me that this recent job was a two way sync, in which even though I had originally had set up one way alas it is a two way sync so I assume GoodSync has added iPhoto. I checked their suggestions and nothing panned out, so now I have this huge collection that I need to become more manageable again. Before this recent incident I freed up 140 GB of space on his HDD but was taken up by GoodSync. I'm trying to free this space up once again.
I looked into applications such as Duplicate Annihilator which didn't do much but about 800MB of space which I got rid of. I've read about rebuidling the library, defragmenting the library, possible hidden photos or files that are taking space but l guess I'm looking for a more clearer path on what to do.
Any advice would greatly be appreciated.
    AM -

1 - It is absolutely critical that you never make any changes to the structure or content of the iPhoto library - it is a SQLite database and any changes will create problems
2 - I have no idea what Good Sync is or how it works  --  However note that the iPhoto library must always be on a volume formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) so if you are "syncing" it to a volume with a different format you probably have a problem library on that volume
3 - I have no idea how their two way syncing workd but in general that will destroy your library since it will make changes to the content and/or the structure of the library and the SQLite database will not have any idea what has been done
4 - you can not "slim down" the iPhoto library except possibly showing package contents and removing the iPhone catche - it can get large and can be safely removed
5 - the solution is to the the iPhoto library off the computer to a preperly formatted external drive -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • Need help coping project from one computer to another.

I need help coping project from one computer to another.  I loaded all video on computer 1, copied events and project folder to computer 2.  I was told I only needed to copy the project folder back to computer 1 since the events folder is already there.   I copied project folder back to computer 1 but the files wont open.  I dont have computer 2 available.
    Please help!!!

    Hi
No that's not the way to do it - iMovie gets confused and in some cases the problems might be un-repairable.
    You've got several problems
    • iMovie'08 - CAN NOT MOVE PROJCTS - You NEED iMovie'09 or iMovie'11 - I see no other working solution
    • Never MOVE or alter any folder named
    iMovie Projects - or -
    iMovie Events
on DeskTop/Finder - This might be very harmful
    • Moving (Projects) and Events - HAS TO be done within the iMovie Application.
You've got an Evets window and here You can view Your Events in two ways - Yearly - or - Yearly per Hard disk
Here You can move within this "window" to another location
    • Projects - NO they do not contain Your full movie - only a document on howto use the material in Event folder
and there might be worse if You added Photos from iPhoto and Audio from iTunes/Garageband - then You have
to get this over to the second Mac too, to be able to continue editing.
So to move Your projects to another Mac You need
    • iMovie'09 or 11
    • an external hard disk -
MUST BE Mac OS Extended formatted - as UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange will not work for VIDEO
Should be a FireWire one - as UBS/UBS2 performs badly when used for video
    • Then move/copy over within Project resp Events window in iMovie Application
Hopefully I've been not to confusing or badly structured to be followed.
    Yours Bengt W

  • How to import photos from iPhoto Library to Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Editor?

I can't use Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Editor to edit photos from iPhoto Library. If I choose File, Open, and then select 'iPhoto Library', error message is "could not complete your request because of a program error."

You can't do it that way. Any attempt to poke around in the iphoto library from outside iphoto is very likely to damage the library and cause you to lose your photos, so PSE won't let you. You have two choices:
    1. Set PSE as your external editor, send the photos from iphoto, and save them without changing the name or format (you may need to adjust the editor prefs>Saving Files>On First Save to let you do this). Then iphoto will remember your original and the last edited version.
Be sure to choose this file in Applications>Adobe Photoshop Elements 10>Support files as your external editor, not the one at the top level of the PSE 10 folder in Applications:
    2. Export the photos from iphoto, use File>Open in the PSE editor to open the images and then save them with whatever changes to name or format you like, and reimport the saved images to iphoto as new files. This way you can save as many versions as you like.

How can I import photos from iPhoto-library to edit in Photoshop CC? - and save it back to the iPhoto-library?

How to access iPhoto images for use in Photoshop
    1. In the Finder, navigate to Users > [user name} > Pictures > iPhoto Library.
    2. Control-click the iPhoto Library file and choose Show Package Contents.
    3. A Finder window opens that shows the contents. The Masters folder (or called Originals folder) contains all of the photographs that are in iPhoto.
Photoshop cannot access this folder, but if you make a duplicate of the folder, the dupe will be accessible -- so:
    4. Control-click the folder named Masters (or Originals) and choose Duplicate.
5, Drag the duplicate folder which is named "Masters copy" or “Originals copy” from the iPhoto Library Finder window to the Desktop.
    6. Open images in Photoshop from file on desktop.
7  Rename the folder and move it elsewhere (probably to the Pictures folder), if desired.

  • Just downloaded trial version -- don't see iPhoto library in Aperture and need to import selected photos-not entire library!

I just downloaded trial version -- don't see iPhoto library in Aperture and need to import selected photos to edit, not entire i Photo library! I read manual and it says:
Browsing and Selecting Images in Your iPhoto Library
You use the Aperture iPhoto Browser to review iPhoto images and import specific images into the Aperture library. The iPhoto Browser gives you a handy way of looking for certain images without having to import your entire iPhoto library.
So, where do I review the iPhoto images...there is nothing in there that says "iPhoto Library"   Everything I see pertains to Aperture Library which of course is empty since I haven't imported (or dragged) any photos in there yet.
Also is tech support available for Aperture?  I have Apple Extended Support and I sure would love it if I had individual help.  I have a deadline --3 days to edit 300 photos and I'm a complete amateur.  iPhoto doesn't  have the capability to erase parts of a face (I need to contour the neck of a mannequin to make it proportionate to the separate head I put on top of it. I'm sure Aperture must have a tool to help me do that!  At least I hope so.

Enable PhotoStream in iCloud first, then add the photos to PhotoStream in iCloud. Of course, you will need PhotoStream also enabled on your other devices also in order to view them.

Where is my IPhoto library? I updated and the last two years of photos disappeared. Help., Where is my IPhoto library? I updated and the last two years of photos disappeared. Help.Thank you.

Simple and fast solution: restore from your back up.
    Other than that:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I have Iphoto library in Aperture.  Can I move the projects from iPhoto to aperture project by dragging?

I have Iphoto library in Apeture.  Can I move the projects from iPhoto to aperture project by dragging (within the apeture program)? Is this making a duplicate of all the photos? It seems to work??  It then leaves my Iphoto library in apeture empty.  I would like to do this just to reorganize the photos between the two.  I feel that I may have doubles and would like all pictures of one year in same project in Aperture instead of going between both.

Tell us more, please. I am not quite sure, what you want to do and how you are using Aperture and iPhoto?
Which versions of Aperture and iPhoto are you using?
Do you have separate photo libraries for Aperture and iPhoto, or are you opening your iPhoto libraries in Aperture?
I have Iphoto library in Apeture.
Did you import an iPhoto library into Aperture?  And now you are seeing a section "iPhoto Library"  in the Aperture projects list in the Inspector?
Events and albums you imported from iPhoto (Import > Library > Some iPhoto Library) will be imported as Aperture projects and albums, and they will behave exactly as other Aperture projects and albums.
Can I move the projects from iPhoto to aperture project by dragging (within the aperture program)? Is this making a duplicate of all the photos? It seems to work??  It then leaves my Iphoto library in apeture empty.
You can drag images from any project in Aperture to other projects and that will move (not duplicate) the images and all its versions to that project. And when you drag all images from the project to another project, the remaining project will be empty and can be deleted.  (Caution: Photos that you have hidden in iPhoto will not be visible in Aperture. If you are not sure, if you have hidden photos, open the library again in iPhoto and unhide all photos).
I feel that I may have doubles and would like all pictures of one year in same project in Aperture instead of going between both.
There should be no problem with moving all photos from the same years to the same projects. You can also drag projects in "Projects" view on top of each other. That will merge them.
You could also define smart albums in Aperture to search for images taken at a specific period of time:
File > New > Smart album:
Then, in the Smart Settings HUD, click "Add Rule" and add a Date or Calendar rule.
For example, to find all images taken in 2010, use a rule "Date > Capture Year is > 2010"
To search for Photos taken at a specific date or at several dates, use a "calendar" rule. This way, you do nat have to type the date, but can pick it from a mini calendar.
