Need help backing up 3G from Time machine

I am looking for an important text that I erased. So, I am attemptingto backup from time machine since the itunes backup is dated last November.
I do not have a clue how to do this. After I back it up, I will want to erase it and re-back it up to yesterdays date. I looked in the HD/library/appsupport/ for a file called "mobilesync/backup" and do not have one. So, does that mean my phone is not backed up via time machine?
I am running 10.6.7. Thankd in advance for your advice.

Also, can you tell me why in the itunes window "set up your phone" there are 2 choices to restore: one reads "iphone" on is dated Nov of 2010? Where is the sync that I did before I restored to factory settings (erased)?

  • Need help removing hard drive from Time Machine exclusion list

I have a 1TB Western Digital Essential hard drive with about 500Gb of music, movies and other assorted data tethered directly to my iMac. I also have a 1TB Time Capsule that serves as my wireless router and connects to my iMac over the wireless network. I'm trying to use the Time Capsule as the ultimate backup device, to backup the data on my iMac and the tethered 1TB Western Digital hard drive via Time Machine. It already backs up all the data on my iMac, but unfortunately, Time Machine places the 1TB Western Digital hard drive in the exclusion list (which I understand is normal), but will not let me click the minus sign to remove the drive from the exclusion list (which is where I'm at a loss). Someone please help me find a way around this as I've been unable to find a way to remove the Western Digital drive from the exclusion list and have Time Capsule access its data. Many thanks in advance for any help with this.

    gotham,
Forgive me, but are you highlighting the drive in the list before you click the "-" button?
Also, were is the external drive? Connected to your Mac or the TC. If the TC, then Time Machine won't backup the external drive. It needs to be connected to the Mac directly.
Otherwise, you can delete the TM .plist.
*Delete The Time Machine Preference .plist*
Go to --> Macintosh HD / Library / Preferences (Note: NOT Home / Library / Preferences).
    Drag the .plist file labeled,
    com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
to the root level of your Macs’ hard drive.
    Reboot your computer.
This .plist file is automatically recreated at startup if it is missing.
You will need to reselect your Time Capsule in the TM Prefs for backup.
Now try 'removing' the other drive form the exclusion list.
Let us know if this helped resolve your issue.
    Cheers!

  • Need help...reinstalling from time machine after booting to white screen w/ flashing "?" in a folder!

I looked on line after seeing the flashing folder and found did the boot up holding the "Command" and "R" keys. I was set to reinstall OS X from my last time machine back up I had on an external drive. I was able to select the external drive and the back up, but when the next screen came up w/ where to install the back up, my internal hard drive did not come up. It is the factory installed HD, not off shelf. I had to plug in another external HD so I could at least try to install the back up. Please help....why won't the computer allow me to save it to my internal drive? Thanks.

The flashing question mark is the firmware telling you it forgot (or can't see) the bootable OS X volume assigned to it.
You can hold the option key down on a wired or built in keyboard and boot the computer, a lit of icons appears and if you see your OS X one, click the arrow.
Once inside, head to System Preferences and set the Startup Disk again. Reboot to test if this worked and if so then your done.
If you option boot and only see the Recovery HD (and BootCamp if installed) then something is wrong with the Macintosh HD partiton that contains OS X, files and programs.
You have a backup of your data on the TimeMachine drive since the last time it was connected, however if you have more recent files and/or don't want to take a chance deleting your only copy on the boot drive, then you can do this.
.Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Then attempt to fix your issue in place
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Or erase the Macintosh HD partiton in Recovery HD and then restore from TimeMachine
If that fails then you can erase Macintosh HD partition and reinstall OS X fresh
Erase, formatting, OS X installs on Mac's
and return files from the backup you made from the external boot drive.

  • Retrieve backed up emails from Time machine in snow leopard after downgrading from Lion?

I installed Lion, but after putting up with it for the last month with problems like: computer crashes, slowing my computer to an unbelievably dismal speed and computer freezes at least once a day, I have now reformatted my hard drive. I have reinstalled Snow Leopard and restored all my settings, folders and applications from a time machine backup.
However, I am now back in my desktop (that's another story as all of a sudden it asked me for a password, even though I've never created one to log in) and on snow leopard- BUT I have no address book contacts and as for my email- well my email accounts appear in mail, but all my emails are lost (sent, received, inbox.... nothing there).
I desperately need those emails back as I run my own business and this has just been a nightmare. I thought that after reformatting and then restoring from a time machine back up life would go back to normal but obviously not.
Can anyone please shed some light on where I would find the folder in my time machine back up to cut and paste back over for snow leopard to show my emails again?
    Thanks in advance.

  • OS 10.6 - Please help - problem restoring system from time machine!

    Hi there,
Today I installed a little program to convert flac audio files to mp3. When I ran the program the computer froze, so I rebooted but then I could move the cursor but not click on any menus or icons on the desktop, they just wouldnt respond - so basically I couldnt use the computer. After re-booting a few times with the same result I decided to reinstall the system using time machine from an external hard drive. I reinstalled OSX, then reinstalled Snow Leopard, then reinstalled the system from a previous save from Time Machine. It said the installation was successful, but when the computer restarted a message comes up saying "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again". Ive done this about 5 times now but it always just says the same message without starting properly. WHAT DO I DO???? I really need to use my computer tomorrow so any help is hugely appreciated!!! TIA
PS. i have done a hardware test in "loop mode" and it says everything is fine

how exactly did you reinstall the system from TM? please give details. the correct way to do it is to boot from the snow leopard DVD and use the "restore system from backup" utility in the Utilities menu. there is no need to reinstall anything prior to using that utility. the restore utility wipes your hard drive and restores it to the state it was in at the backup time.

  • I need to restore iphoto library from time machine, but have a question

I need to rebuild my library but already have 5 libraries which are taking too much space on my HD to finish a complete rebuild. Is it safe to move those 5 libraries to the trash and restore the one from time machine???
    thanks in advance,
    Kari

IF nothing goes wrong - hardware - software - human - then you will be fine
Personally my photos are important to me and I'd purchase an external harddrive and backup everything to it first - then do the deletes/rebuild etc
Then I would continue using the new EHD for a second backup using a clone package (Carbon Copy Cloner or SUperDuper)

  • I need to restore some Notes from Time Machine but how?

I have Lion 10.7.4 and Time Machine and need to restore Notes [which are in the Reminder part of my Mail app] and figured otu how to show the hidden files so could see the Library, thinking that was where the 'old' notes were = so went there but can't find where the notes in Mail are kept - and can't find to restore them.
How do I find the notes from a month or so ago to restore them into the present Time Machine folder -- I've tried it 3 times and the Notes thing is there but empty each time == but if I am in TimeMchine and look at tht top I see that there are 25 notes etc.

Thanks but that is what I am doing...the shot below is of the Notes area in Mail before I do the Restore via TM - I go into TM and back in mid April/late March find 25 items = I did a screen shot [below] so  I know the info is there - but so far I keep getting the restored Notes folders with -0- messages
I did go into the Timemachine volume and follow thru the location path to the Notes.mbox in the Library of my user folder [name has not changed] - the only thing there is the info.plist = which contains the plist info but not the 25 notes or messages which clearly show up above.  Thanks for the help.  Not sure what to do next?

  • Do i need to back up applications with time machine?

I received a message that Time Machine was running out of room to back up. I've only used 112GB on my computer, but my Time Machine drive has a capacity of 163GB, so I don't understand why I am running out of room.
Do I need to back up my applications? Is there anything that I can omit from a backup to save space? I already keep all of my photos and movies on a seperate hard drive, and I don't include that in the backup.

Time Machine requires sufficient space to keep one complete copy of your entire hard disk's contents, plus additional space for older backups. You are likely to need much more than 163 GB for Time Machine to function as designed. See Apple Support Communities contributor Pondini's FAQ: How big a drive do I need for Time Machine?
Do I need to back up my applications?
Strictly speaking no, but I would. The way in which Apple (and others) are moving in favor of the download-only method of app distribution, a Time Machine or similar backup has now become the only way to revert to a previous release of an app should a newer one not perform as expected.

  • Need help backing up info from MacPro AND Powerbook G4 to external drive...

As the title implies, I would like to backup my stuff from my MacBook Pro AND my OLD dinosaur PowerBook G4 to an external Seagate drive.
What would be the best/easiest way to move this to the external?
I am mainly concerned with my Photos, Movies, Music.
I remember having a nightmare of a time with the PowerBook as I had a corrupted the photo library and had photos ALL over the place! I became very frustrated and bought the newer MacPro.  (lesson learned)
I decided to pull out the dino and have decided to conquer it again.  Could someone help me out or point me in the right direction?
I have the most current version of SuperDuper on my MacPro.  I bought a 1st gen Time Capsule and resold it because of all of the problems people were having with them.  Will get a NEW Time Capsule soon but no funds now. (Christmas coming up)
    Thank You!
BTW: I wasn't sure where to post this question.....? PowerBook discussions or MacPro discussions?

Fully-updated 10.5 on your PowerPC will work fine with a Time Capsule, as will 10.5, 10.6, or 10.7 on a Mac Pro. This is the easiest to manage in the long run, once you make certain it is actually performing the backup without error.
(Some users find their first backups fail due to bad disknames or bad filenames or damaged files, but once these are eliminated, it seems to work fine.).
You can manually move a single external drive into position to back up each Mac in turn, but that is more work and you lose automaticity, so Time Machine would not necessarily be the best backup solution. Bootable clones may be preferable. Most folks would suggest that BOTH solutions should be used for best results.
Drives are cheap. We used to spend US$1000 for 80 MegaBytes.

  • Removing a backed-up drive from Time Machine

One of my external drives was starting to act up, so I chose to upgrade it and move all my files to the new drive. I didn't think to use Time Machine to do this, just old habits of manually copying files from one drive to another, then formatting the old drive.
The original drive, Data, was backed up via Time Machine along with my Mac's internal drive. The new drive, Data 2 has replaced Data, but not in the Time Machine backups. I can tell TM to start backing up Data 2 but the backups for Data are still on my TM drive, and I can't find a way to tell it to replace the Data backups with the new Data 2.
Is there a way to remove a drive that has been backed up in the past? If I can just delete the backups from Data, then I can run a new, full backup on Data 2 and start from there. As it stands now, I just have a bunch of wasted space on the TM drive since it associates all the Data backups with a drive that no longer exists.
    Any suggestions?

  • Backed up data from Time Machine

    Hi,
I just installed Leopard on my iBook G4 and for Time Machine I used my 250 GB external HD from iomega, which is very good. I always thought that at the beginning Time Machine copies everything on the external HD, and then every hour it just checks what has been changed and copies only the changed files over. I just browsed through my external HD and saw that, as a matter of fact, Time Machine backs up every file every hour. I noticed this because in the "Backup" folder (on the ext. HD) there were many other folders with time and date. You could see that for every hour Time Machine made a folder, with all my documents inside. Is this right? Does Time Machine really back up the whole computer every hour? Or did I just see something wrong? Because if Time Machine really backs up 30 GB of data every hour, I have a slight problem with a 250 GB external HD.
    Thanks!

Open up System Preferences / Time Machine.
Now right-click (or CTRL-click) on the Time Machine icon in the Dock and select Back Up Now from the menu that pops up. Watch what happens in the Time Machine preferences pane. That will show you how much is being transferred. You can also watch when the time for the next hourly backup approaches.
You can also see this info after the fact by going to Applications / Utilities / Console (select "All Messages" in the column on the left) and looking for the information messages put out by the "backupd" process that is actually doing the work.
What you'll find is that far less than the whole system gets transferred. However, despite that, each Time Machine snapshot in time includes the COMPLETE file system? How does it do it? By including "hard links" -- a special form of file pointer or alias -- for each file or folder that was actually transferred in an earlier incremental or initial backup. When Time Machine discards old backups (to winnow hourly backups down to one backup per day, and eventually one backup per week), the file system doesn't actually delete a file on the Time Machine disk unless all the hard links to it are also gone. So if a file was transferred in a given incremental backup, it will STAY on the Time Machine drive until all subsequent "hard link" references to it are deleted -- even though the backup during which it was originally transferred has long since been deleted itself.
So if you delete the real file on your computer, no new hard links get created as part of each subsequent Time Machine backup, and eventually (as the disk gets full and old backups are discarded) the last reference to that file will be discarded and the file itself will also actually be deleted from the Time Machine drive. And if you change a file, the new version gets transferred, but the old version remains on the Time Machine drive so long as there are still hard link references to it which have not yet been discarded.
From a user point of view, you don't have to know what got transferred during a given incremental backup, because each and every time window into your Time Machine always shows you the COMPLETE file system as of that point in time (minus anything you have put into the Do Not Back Up list).

  • Back Up Disappears from Time Machine

Last night, I noticed that the hourly back up to Time Machine was taking unusually long. When I pulled up Time Machine, all but the last few backups were no longer listed. When I checked the auxiliary drive, the same few backups were displayed...but the drive showed all but 5.17 GBs out of a possible 160 GBs were being "used". Has the history actually been erased or is it still being stored in the auxiliary drive but for some reason, not displayed? Where do I go from here?

It sounds like Time Machine did a full backup, or at least a very large one. That would also explain why, as William says, it seems to have deleted a lot of old backups.
It's also possible that it started a new "sequence" of backups. Try the procedure in #E3 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). See if that shows some older backups.
Also see #A1 there, for a handy widget that will display the log messages from recent backups. The size of each one will be documented there, along with other things. If one is quite large, that may explain what happened, if not why. If it was a full backup, see #D3 in Troubleshooting for some possible causes; if not, see #D4.
If in doubt, post back with the messages from the large backup, and full particulars, including how much data is on your system.

  • Need help backing up songs from iTunes on DVD and external hard drive

    Hi,
I am hoping someone can help me with this. I want to make a back up of all the songs I have in iTunes. I want to save them to a DVD as well as my external hard drive. Can you please give me detailed info on how to do both of these things?

    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

In Itunes set burning preferences to DATA CD/DVD
Create a playlist called "Backup", put all your track into it, make sure that all checkboxes are selected.
    Burn that playlist
Assuming that you are using standard folders for storing your music:
Through finder navigate to ./Users/YourUserName/Music - now drag the folder "iTunes" onto your ext. drive.
