Need Help Booting to My HD ... I think

A few days ago, I turned on my computer and it got stuck on the gray screen with the apple. After a few restarts, it would progress to a blue screen -- and then nothing.
I used my Snow Leopard disk to run disk utilities: repair disk and verify disk. The program ran smoothly, but still would not restart to my desktop. So I reinstalled the OS. Here's the weird thing: after the reinstall, my old desktop and all my files were there.
Now, if I shut down the computer, it boots up to a gray screen with a circle with a slash over it (like a Do Not Enter sign). I can reinstall the OS and get my old desktop and files.
I have no idea what is going on. I don't know why my computer won't boot as normal if I shut down.
Any ideas about what is wrong with my computer? Any ideas how to fix this?
--SOME BACKGROUND--
My Macbook is at least five years old. Last year, my HD crashed. I replaced the 80 gig with a 250 gig, but I'm only using about 69 gigs right now. Two weeks ago, my email was cracked and used to send out some spam (although I don't know how that would matter).

your gonna want to contact your internet service provider for the best info on setting that router up. but for connecting to wifi on the iphone, ipad, and ipod

then choose your connection and enter the password

Hey guys
I just got my very first SATA drive. it's a Hitachi 160GB 7k250!
anyway, I wanted to set this new drive (partion 1 to be exact) as my PRIMARY or what I like to call SYSTEM drive.. this is where i store only my windows core files and program files..
My previous setup is that I have 2 PATA drives (Primary master and Secondary Master) and 2 DVD drives (Primary Slave and Secondary Slave)..
Now with the introduction of this new SATA drive, well, i didnt know what to do..
I got as far as setting my BIOS to: (forgive me if the following isnt exact terms as in the bios)
ATA = PATA Channel only
keep SATA = YES
(and some settings i can't remember)
I was able to boot my computer up with the SATA HD partitions set at the next available drive letters.
Now here's the problem.. I currently have an Image of my C: (system) created with Acronis TrueImage 8, and i restored that to my SATA drive's FIRST partition...
The first partition is also formatted with the same file system NTFS and is set to primary..
From here, i honestly dont know what to do..
ofcourse I will have to set bios to boot the SATA drive first...
Also, since the System image (windows XP) is that of DRIVE C: I have to somehow set the SATA drive to be HD0 (first channel)... playing around in my bios I have accomplised to have set my SATA drive as IDE channel 1 = Primary.. funny thing is the rest of the drives moved down starting at IDE Channel 3 and 4..
Still i went on to boot up.. but i was unsuccessfull. I get a very quick blue screen (about 50 miliseconds) and then my computer shuts off and reboots..
I played around witht he settings and tried many things.. still get the quick BSOD and then reboot problem
GUys? What am i missing here?
I didnt know this SATA drive was gona get complicated.. i thought i'd be up and running by now.. :( ..

I have followed your instructions to the dot.. now im getting as far as the WindowsXP Boot Screen... after an unusually long loading time, i get that BSOD flash which i really cant make out since the darn thing reboots right away.. :(

same results... a long boot screen loading time.. then a quick BSOD..
I alsto tried booting up in safemode.. the loading stops at agp440.sys and reboots after a long pause at that part.
So now I switched back to your recommended settings, but this time setting my old hard drive to boot (PATA).
To my surprise im back to where i started (despite maintaining your suggested settings) thus i am replying to this post again..
also, i noticed that with your suggested settings, my SATA drive is on IDE channel 1.. and the rest on IDE channel 3 and 4.. but here in windows my old hard drive is still drive C:.. I was expecting my SATA drive to be Drive C this time.. could this be the problem here?
I mean the windows Image I restored is setup to work on drive C (first drive), although I removed all the drive, could it be that my SATA drive is still not on drive C?

Need help booting from usb on Lenovo U410

I have burned a .iso file on a usb stick, and now i want to to boot my laptop from the usb.
I shutdow the computer and a pressed the NOVO button on the side start the cmmputer to give me the menu
under the BIOS setup and the BOOT tab, i am confused to which step to priorritize to boot from the usb. i have the following:
1.ATA HDD: ST9...
2. ATA SSD1: SANDISK SSD U100 24GB
3.RAID DEVICE 2
4. RAID DEVISE 1
5. ATAPI CD:
6.USB HDD: GENERIC USB HDD
7.USB FDD
8.USB CD
9.PCI LAN: EFI NETWORK IPV4
10. PCI LAN : EFI NEWTOWORK IPV6
i obvisouly tried putting anything with the word "USB" to the top but still my lenovo u410 dosent boot from the usb..
Any help please?

Thanks for Using Lenovo community Forums!
Inside BIOS under boot tab you will find there UEFI Boot you will need to disable that
then u need to move the USB HDD: GENERIC USB HDD to number 1.
You can do that by highlighting the USB HDD: GENERIC USB HDD and pressing F5 or F6 to move it up
-or-
Highlight the things on top of the USB HDD: GENERIC USB HDD then put them down still using the F5 or F6 to move them down, do it one by one till the USB HDD is on top.
Just make once you got the USB HDD: GENERIC USB HDD to 1 hit F10 to save and exit changes.

Need Help with Consolidating...I Think

Here is my issue:
I had my entire hard drive backed up, and my hard drive failed about a month ago. The tech guys did a great job of giving me a new hard drive, and they TRIED to save my iTunes Music folder. When I got my computer back, my iTunes folder still had all its music except EVERY single file started about 30 seconds into the song. The beginnings were all gone, i'm guessing they were severely damaged.
This was fine, because I then deleted the library (but kept the files for some stupid reason) and added the undamaged ones from my external.
I realize my mistake, because now in my iTunes Music Folder (not my library), there are two copies of every album I have. One of them with 30 seconds missing, one of them without. Also, iTunes put all the songs for each artist in the same Artist Folder so they are all completely mixed with the undamaged files like this:

Track 2
Track 2
Track 3
Track 3
and so on, with every other track being the damaged file I don't need. I need to find a way to delete these files from my computer without manually listening to each one and seeing if it is the damaged or undamaged file. I have about 20 GB of music, so that would take AGES. Also, because i have 20 GB of Music, its currently taking up about 40 GB of space.
I was thinking if I consolidated my Library (not the music folder) to a separate folder (on my external), then deleted the iTunes Music folder on my computer's hard drive, then moved it back from the external onto my hard drive, would this work?
The original backed up files from my external are gone, so I have to find a way to separate the two. The only files I want to keep are the ones in my Library, not the entire folder.
Any help would really be great, I would love to clear up that unused 20 GB.

Oh, thank you!! I don't know what happened. I did "extend" the content section just like you described, by adding text boxes, but somehow the "previous" and "next" buttons got screwed up and I couldn't put anything underneath them. I recreated the page from scratch because I didn't know this tip, but it's sure good to know going forward.
What's interesting/confusing, though, is that the page inspector says that the content height is 480 pixels, even though I've extended it much farther.

Need help booting from DMG file without DVD drive

okay so i have 6 computers with me right now. i need to use one that has a dvd drive to install it on a comp that doesnt via firewire.
1- macbook with superdrive and os 10.5 (cant even open tiger install because its a new macbook
2-iBook g4 with DVD drive BUT the firewire port is broken
3-iBook g3 (one that needs tiger but only has a cd drive)
4-ibook g3 (without dvd drive)
5-powerbook g4 with dvd drive and firewire (for some reason will not read the tiger discs i just burned, even though ive already used them on the ibook g4
6-mac pro with firewire and dvd drive, but the dvd drive is broken.
so seems to me, every computer i have has a weakness for exactly what i need. what i need to know now is if i can boot the powerbook g4 from a DMG file of tiger install disc 1 and install is to the target ibook through firewire. if you have any suggestions on what i should try with the supplies mentioned above, please inform me. thanks!

You can't unless the PowerBook is running Mac OS X Server, in which case the NetInstall feature can be used.

Need help with DM software install - installer thinks I have previous installation, but I don't

This is really frustrating me, but I recently uninstalled v4.3 and have been struggling to re-install ANY version of the DM onto my XP Pro machine. I have followed every bit of advice I can find including clean un-install / install, change the TEMP environment variable, unzip the installer and store locally, but I still can't figure this out.

It seems to think that I have a previous version installed in my Program Files, but no such executable exists (as I mentioned earlier, I have followed the clean install procedures more than once

Edit -- oh...and reboots...lots of them...one between each step...after an uninstall...after an install...etc.

Need help booting into OSX

I had an accident with my MCPR 2012 and spilt water over the display. The unit works fine and boots but display is dead.
It works through the tv fine via hdmi using bootcamp into windows 8... but for the life of me i cant get it to boot into osx at all. Tried to hold option key on boot but nothing comes up at all. Is it something to do with the hdmi on boot and drivers? Want to sell it as is on ebay but first i need to show pics of it booting up into osx. Any ideas guys? TIA

Hard drive died--need help booting

Hi all,
I recently replaced my internal HD with a 320 and life was grand until last night, when I noticed the dreaded clicks, etc coming from my HD. I figured I better back up, but no luck, the thing refuses to cooperate. When I restart, I eventually get to the log in screen, but even clicking my user name does nothing more.
I do have a firewire external back up drive, I used SuperDuper to make the copy. I'm trying to restart from my external drive, but when I do, I hold down the option key, and get a FW disk image with my back up drive's name, but I can't select it. The internal drive keeps making the clicking noises.
I don't remember my last back up date, but I don't think it was all that long ago. I'm hoping to salvage a few digital photos I had on the internal drive that I hadn't backed up yet. Everything else should either be on my back up drive already, or MobileMe, or my iPod.
So, I plan to call OWC to see if they will replace the drive, but I still would like to start up from my external drive.
Any suggestions?

I selected the drive (the only one to show), and nothing happened.
I then figured I'd try to restart, and on restart it started up in the ext drive--talk about s l o w!

Help, need help booting XP from external hard drive

Hi all, i can't seem to get XP to boot from my external hard drive.
OK, heres the story. i have an imac. i use bootcamp to run OSX and XP. things are good. but i run out of space, so i buy myself a 2tb bare drive and swap it out. so i put the original internal with OSX and XP into an external firewire/usb enclosure. I install refit. I hold option on startup and it shows that i have a windows and a mac OS i can boot from the External firewire disk. looks great, but when i choose the windows from the Ext disk, it doesn't boot, instead it loads windows7 on my new 2tb internal disk.
i hear its hard to boot windows XP from an external disk. my professor told me it has something to do with the boot.ini file on the XP disk... something about changing the value of the "rdisk" to 1, which i have done.
i am not trying to reinstall xp, rather just boot from it because i have so many applications/plugins that i do not wish to reinstall.
Does anyone know if this is possible?>> Logon to windows7, and create a system image/backup of the system FROM the XP external disk? and then reinstall XP on that disk, then restore back onto itself? that way i won't have to reinstall.

Need help booting from a CD

I wanted to run Norton Utilities to see what shape my Mac is in, but I could not boot from the CD (by holding down the "C" key at startup). I've also tried changing the designated startup disk (under "System Preferences" to the Norton Disk (after having the Norton Disk in the computer), but again it won't recognize any other operating system other than the one on the hard drive. And I've tried this same procedure with another copy of Norton Utilities to confirm that this is not a faulty Norton disk.
So then I decided to try and run disk first aid from my MAC OS X install disk, but here again the computer would not startup from the MAC OS X disk.
Any idea why I cannot get this computer to boot from a CD? (and no - the "c" key on my keyboard works just fine!).

I would STRONGLY suggest that you do NOT run Norton on your Mac.
Norton is not compatible with OS X. It is known to do more harm then good.

Need Help with some Resolution Basics (I think)

I'm trying to use my Powerbook G4 15-in 1.5 GHz to connect to a 23-in ACD. I'm connecting to the ACD through the DVI port.
When I do, and after mirroring the displays, only part of the ACD screen is used, the rest being dark on the outside. The display settings are already set to their maximum resolution, 1280 x 854. Can I go any higher? Is resolution the answer to the "black box" around the desktop on the ACD?
There is an education hump with regard to the basics of resolution that I think I am not getting over.

You are missing an end tell for the Alfred 2.app and a couple of end if statements at the end, but if you are looking at using the results of a choose from list command to select applications to activate that is not going to work. As it is, you are just activating everything, since all of your comparisons will evaluate to true.
The display dialog and choose from list commands return a result that can be placed into a variable, that can then be used in your comparisons. Take a look at this article for a tutorial on user interaction.

The screen broke cause it slipped and it cracked so my dad took me to this place where they replaced it for a minimum amount but lately the screen has been acting up and so i got it changed again and after 2 weeks it's starting to have troubles again!
