Need help buying a new computer

Ok so I desperately need a new computer. my current one is 6 years old and is dying on me. What I'm looking for is something that will be able to run games like Knights of the Old Republic, The Sims 2, and eventually Star Wars: The Old Republic once it is released next spring. I don't want something that would be overkill for these games, but enough so that they don't lag and don't look awful. And I'm fine with buying a graphics card separately if it would be cheaper then buying some epic pc. My price range is $800-$1100, preferably $800 ^^; $1100 is like last resort no other option.
so any help would be greatly appreciated
On a side-note, my current pc until recently could play the above games fine, so I know I don't need some epic gaming computer to play them, but I just need help with which companies are reliable and what will be able to handle something like swtor's graphics in the near future.

Hey! You don't need a powerhouse, but as long as you have such a nice budget, you might as well get something nice. This is my personal recommendation based on specs, hardware and branding. Also, the case doesn't try to be 'too cool', it's a standard, functional case with a little better construction. No video upgrade needed. (This is tower only, if you need a monitor, that's a whole different cup of tea).

    Maybe, maybe not.
Get more information about your computer. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac", then "More Info..."  Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).
For full iCloud you need 10.7  But the question really is, do you need all the things it does?  I mean really?  Oh, you don't mention if this question is in conjunction with some device you own. To whom and how are you transferring files?

  • Computer crashed - lost itunes - need help synching to new computer

    Hi,
Well last night I was the lucky recipient of a virus...on my old Desktop computer. After battling it for 2.5 hours I had to give up, it basically doesn't work anymore. This was the computer that I've always had itunes on, and the one that I sync both my iPhone 3Gs and iPod with.
    Can someone please tell me:
a)Once I install iTunes on my new laptop, will it give me issues when I try to resync my ipod? Luckily I have the music backed up on an external hard drive. But will it allow me to sync?
b)how can I sync my iphone to the new computer/iTunes, without losing all my apps and pictures? Everything was backed up on my OLD computer and therefore lost.
Please help - it totally ***** and I've never had to move stuff over before.

Try a search as this is asked almost daily. Easier to find an older post than to retype all the details.

  • Need help with my new computer

ok i just bought my new dell xps and i wanted to install itunes and transfer my music over that i purchased because all the cd's i still have but my dad decided to delete itunes off the old computer with all the music, so i was wondering if there is anyway to redownload my music that i have already purchased?

Use the form on this page to request a free redownload, or use the Transfer Purchases feature if applicable. If neither of these works, you will need to purchase the content again to get them back; Apple needs to pay the copyright holders for each download from the iTunes Store other than podcasts, album artwork, and iPod touch/iPhone applications.

  • Unable to update Mac OS X 10.5.8, do a need to buy a new computer?

I have a Mac OS X 10.5.8 which is about 6 yrs. old. I am unable to update anything anymore including my browser, etc. Is there a way to update this computer or will I have to purchase another?

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a PowerPC Mac, it's already running the newest OS it can.
If it's a Core Duo Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update.
If it's a Core 2 Duo or better Mac, upgrade it as if it was a Core Duo Mac, and if desired, open the Mac App Store, and try downloading 10.9. If you get told it's incompatible, go to the online Apple Store and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004. If you upgrade the OS, back up the computer first.

  • Help! I need help buying a new iPod!

Hi. This is the first time for me to buy an iPod. I do not know much about either the nano or the video ipod. But the problem is that I don't know if iPod nano would have enough room for all of my songs, and songs that I will purchase in the future. So here is the question. How much space does iPod nano lose due to it's formatting process? I know that video iPod (30GB) loses somewhere around 3-4GBs. How much does Nano lose? Ig it loses more than 1GB, I'm thinking about buying the Video instead... Please explain to me in detail!! And by the way, is the memory technology for nano flash memory?

The 4GB iPod nano will have 3.7GB of usable capacity, and an 8GB iPod nano will have about 7.5GB. If you choose a 2GB iPod nano, you will be able to store roughly 1.9GB of data on it.
The iPod nano uses a flash drive for storage.

  • Help me buy a new computer suitable for Arch

    Hello all Arch users.
About 1½ years ago, a mate convinced me to try out Arch Linux. It was about the same time as I also bought myself a TFT monitor. I've grown rather fond of Arch since then, and refuse to use anything else (except at work where I have to use Windoze).
But I've also been having some eye-problems for the last year or so, and I'm blaming partly my Phillips 190S monitor, and partly backlight/brightness settings in Arch, which I have been unable to change. Last thursday these eye-problems accelerated and gave me so much trouble I was unable to use a computer or TV or even go outside for days. I can't live a life that boring! :-|  I have to be able to use my computer 25 hours a day.
I've searched a bit on the forum and found that I'm not the only one having some eye-problems with Arch. One solution apparently is to use xbacklight command, which just doesn't work on my system. I found another graphics-card which I tried, but it used the same drivers, so still no xbacklight command. Anyway, I don't want to make a big story out of it either, since I've decided to buy a new computer and monitor now. I want a low-noise system anyway, so....
The monitor will be some expensive stuff that should be very kind to the eyes, so I'm pretty sure that part can't be better. But should you have a recommendation for a great monitor that's kind to the eyes, do share.
I'm thinking that the hardware otherwise might not be compatible with Arch for reasons I'm sure I wouldn't know about. Also, I'm interested in knowing if there's any graphics-cards that suits Arch better than others. And finally, my Arch system is a little broken, and a fresh install probably isn't a bad idea. (I'm no Linux hardcore user, but I definitely know I prefer any Linux distro over Windoze).
So I decided to put down the stuff I'm thinking of getting, and maybe someone will tell me if they know of any problems with that hardware and Arch, or maybe recommend me something else.

    Samsung S223 DVDRW-SA/18/18/8/SATA
    Samsung 250GB SATA II Harddisk
    NorthQ NQ-6803 52-in-1 Cardreader
There's no graphics-card on that list, because there's a built-in one one the motherboard, and I don't really need it for games, but rather system-development and such. But if you believe that a certain graphics-card will improve picture quality, or be more kind to the eyes, then do tell me. (I doubt it, but if you think so, lemme know).
Any other advises regarding brightness and be-kind-to-your-eyes-stuff is also welcome. So far I've installed www.sharpfonts.com, but it's too soon to say if it helps.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks for the answers.
I'll definitely look into that flourescent lighting thingy, although I think/thought I had enough light around me already.
I have also tried having brightness at 0, and even contrast at 0 also. Also using the nvidia settings.
Anyway, it would seem I've found one of the reasons. Apparently, for some weird reason, Arch hasn't offered me 60hz, but rather lower odd numbers such as 53hz. So I've been using a rather lower frequency, which logically should explain at least some of the reason.
While Windows lets me go as high as 75hz with this current 17" monitor I've tried instead of my 19" monitor, Arch won't even let me have 60hz. I've tried various xorg.conf settings, and even got one mailed to me which doesn't change anything. So that's two monitors I've tried where Arch doesn't deliver the hz I want, but where Windows does fine and more. That can't be right. I'm using the nvidia drivers, and have tried two graphics cards.
I'm buying a better monitor regardless though, something that's extra kind to the eyes somehow. I'm thinking 19-22" with some fancy techniques to reduce whatever it tough on the eyes. Maybe a fresh install of Arch will help getting the hz needed. I need to do that anyway on the new computer.
I also tried booting Ubuntu from a CD to check how that seemed, and while the Ubuntu desktop and fonts did seem more calm and eye-friendly, I must admit I'd been looking at it too much at that time to be sure I wasn't just kidding myself.

I received LR 5 for Christmas but have not downloaded it yet on my computer. I have had LR 3 for about 4 years.  I am due to buy a new computer soon but need to know how many licenses/downloads I will get before downloading LR 5 on my current computer.  I may also purchase a laptop in the next year so that would require 3 licenses altogether (current iMac, future iMac, future macbook).

    You have one license.
You can download and install it on an infinite number of computers, as long as it is only installed on two of your computers at any one time, and in use on only one computer at any given time.
So in your case, current iMac, that's would mean its installed on one computer, no problem. Future iMac and future MacBook ... so if you uninstall from current iMac and install on Future iMac and future MacBook, it's now installed on two computers at a time, no problem, as long as you're not using Lightroom on both simultaneously. And if after that, you got two new computers and uninstalled Lightroom from the previous two, you're still good, it's only installed on two computers at any one time.

When I try to install ios lion the installer says my hard drive has SMART errors and that I need to buy a new Hard Drive, but my computer witch has snowleprd and runs just fine.

SMART is a technology that monitors the drive for signs of impending failure. You can verify that SMART is indicating a problem in Disk Utility. Select the hard drive and look at the bottom of the window. It should look like this:
If the SMART status is not "Verified" then you should back up your drive and start shopping for a new one.
