Need help Cloning a Bootcamp partition

I need to install a larger hard drive in my Leopard MBP that has a HFS+ and a FAT32 partition running Win XP.
Moving the HFS+ partition is no big deal, but I really could use some step by step guidance in moving the contents of the existing FAT32 partition to a new and larger FAT32 partition.
I essentially need to backup to an intermediate drive, and then to the new larger target drive. I have been trying to use Disk Utility, but am unable to get a partition that is bootable. I have tried doing a "throwaway" WinXP install on the partition, but am unable to write over the files there, because many of them are locked. I am not running NFS.
Any guidance would be appreciated.

I'm not sure if this will work, but.... What if you used the Microsoft Backup Utility to back-up the files to an external hard drive (you will need an NTFS partition on the external), use bootcamp to create the larger FAT32 on the new drive, install a fresh copy of windoze on the new drive, then use the Microsoft Backup Utility to restore the files from the external hard drive.

  • I need to expand the bootcamp partition, any EASY method?

I searched a few methods for expanding the bootcamp partition, but a lot of people screwed it up. Does anyone know any easy method that wont screw up my bootcamp partition?

You can do it via Gparted c booted from a PartedMagic cd.
There is a GUI, but you really know what your doing and make sure your GUID table is updated.
I would try this experimentally on a external drive several times before risking your main drive, then have bootable clone backups and/or TimeMachine drives standing by to get your machine back in order if something messes up.
Been meaning to give this a shot myself, setting up my quad boot system with Lion right now.

  • Help needed with delete of bootcamp partition, error message 'Couldn't unmount disk'

    Hello all
Sorry if this issue has been repeated elsewhere, I did search but there wasn't a discussion relating to my specific issue.
When we bought the iMac a couple of years ago, my husband partitioned the hard drive to run Windows via Bootcamp. Having got used to the Mac and experiencing the frustration between having to reboot to access each partition I have decided to restore the Mac to factory settings and install Parallels 8 so I can continue to use Office and Coreldraw).
So having backed up all of my files, I started the Mac up holding the 'Alt' key and then loaded the Recovery HD mode followed by Disk Utility. I then selected Bootcamp and erased all data from the partition. [Note: there are 2 files left which it won't allow me to erase through this method]
I then selected the main drive and the tab 'Partition', from the layout I then selected Bootcamp and clicked the minus button. I get the message confirming which partition I am about to delete and hit remove. I then get the error message 'Partition failed: couldn't unmount disk'.
I would be very grateful for some help please? I am not the best techy person but happy to give anything a go.
Just to mention there is nothing left on the Mac that I want to keep, therefore if there is an easier way than having to delete the partition then happy to hear it.
    Thanks
    Tara

    Hello Tara,

  • I need help with creating a partition with bootcamp. I run OSX Lion and want to also run Windows 7.

Bootcamp is not allowing me to create the partition. The message i get when i try to do so is as follows:
The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved.
Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot      Camp Assistant again.
I am looking in Disc Utility and am not sure what to do.
To me it looks like i only have one 'single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. So i am not sure exactly what it is requiring me to do?
    Help greatly appreciated!

Look to the right under "More Like This". Your issue has been discussed many many times. The error you are seeing is because you do not have enough free "contiguous" space on your hard drive. Read the other threads that address this issue to find how to solve the issue.
Or, put "The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved" into the search box at the upper right of this page.

  • I need help cloning a new hard drive

    Hey Guys,
I just bought a new WD 500gb Scorpio Black Hard Drive. I also bought a hard drive enclosure. I'm trying to clone the new hard drive so I can replace it with the old one. I just have a few questions since this is my first time doing anything to my Macbook Pro. Do I have to create a new image to the desktop in order to start cloning the hard drive using Carbon Copy Cloner? I don't know if I'm doing it right, the disk utility progress says creating new image and reading whole disk (unknown partition). Am I going in the right direction? I would greatly appreciate any help. Thank you.

    Drive Preparation
    1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external new drive. Source means the internal old drive.
Remove the new drive from the enclosure and replace the old drive in the computer with it.

  • Need help setting up bootcamp on MBP 17"

    Hey All,
I should be getting my MBP 17" in a few days and so I'm starting to get things ready to get it all set up.
My intention is to run Vista/Windows 7 as my main OS, so I have a few questions about how to go about doing this.
    1. Can I use and OEM version of Vista with Bootcamp?
    2. When I partition the HD, (320 Gig), how much should I leave for OSX?
    3. Can I access my files in both OSX and Vista (music, photos, work)?
    4. Can I set the notebook to boot to Vista as the default?
Basically, I'm new to this so any help you guys could offer would be great. As well, if there is anything I should look out for or be aware of, I would appreciate the heads up.
    Thanks!

    Hi crazylegsmurphy,
    Question No.1
Yes you can install the OEM version of windows Vista
    Question No.2
Depends which OS you will be using most frequently. If you dont use OSX alot, leave at least 30GB-40GB of space. preferably try to leave more. And vice versa if you are not going to use Vista alot.
    Question No.3
Unless you install via VMware or parallels then No you cannot access data simultaneously ( as far as i am concerned ) unless you install this program https://docs.rice.edu/confluence/display/ITTUT/AccessOS+X+partition+from+Windows+in+BootCamp
    Question No.4
yes you can make Vista boot as default but i don't know exactly how to see it offhand.

2 - Application goes Live, Database grows (as expected) but stupid optimizer is not as fast as on test environment (that was mostly empty)
3 - Queries are now 200 times slower.
4 - Expensive DB expert comes and gathers statistics, creates indexes, rewrites queries, uses hint/outline/SQLprofile.
Conclusion : Database is evil and prevent application from working efficiently, the proof of all that being : nothing had to be done on application's side to make things work correctly. Database is declared guilty.
    Which could translate to :
1 - Team buy a formula one with 800HP that can reach 200mph in less than 10 seconds.
2 - Give it a pilot that doesn't even want to understand what-the-heck is a gearbox/transmission. Pilot only drives in 1st gear.
3 - The formula one is now doing 0.003 miles per gallon, doing the hell of a noise, and is limited to 80mph +(any $10000 family wagon is faster in average)+
4 - Expensive expert comes and check everything in the formula one. Finally understand the problem and modify the gearbox to a sloppy automatic transmission
Conclusion : Formula 1 is evil and prevent pilot from being fast. The proof of that being : nothing had to be changed on pilot's side to make things work correctly. Formula 1 is declared guilty.
You cannot win race without understanding how the car/engine/transmission/physics/race rules work.
Too much levels of abstraction is bad. Treating the database as a black box is the most seen "Bad Idea" these days (to my point of view).

  • Need help with understanding updates, partitions, firmware etc.

I went to update my QuickTime and in doing so was told to update my OS which included QT updates. Now I'm getting all kinds of messages about partitions, firmware etc. do not understand at all what's going on.

THIS IS MY STEP BY STEP situation with my updates:
I go to the Apple Icon and selected Software Update and it reads I have 2 items:
    MacBook EFI Firmware Update 1.2
    MacBook SMC Firmware Update 1.4
I select Install and then it state Installs completed successfully.
BUT THEN I recieve and new icon and this message below:
To update the SMC firmware on your MacBook:
Your computer's power cord must be connected and plugged into a working power source, or your battery must be at least 25% charged.
    For more information see 'http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3499'.
    1. Quit all other open applications.
    2. Click Restart in the MacBook SMC Firmware Update window and wait for your computer to restart.
The SMC firmware update starts automatically. A status bar indicates the progress of the update. During the update your computer fans will run at full speed, but will return to normal once the update completes.
Important: Do not interrupt the update.
Your computer restarts automatically when the update is completed and opens the MacBook SMC Firmware Update.
    3.  Click OK. The SMC firmware is now up-to-date.
If these instructions appear on your screen again, the SMC firmware update was not successful. Repeat steps 2 and 3.
I follow the instructions and then I get this: (could get my image to attach but here's what it said)
the first error message heading of:
    MacBook SMC Firmware Update 1.4
Your firmware could not be updated, the hard drive partition scheme may not be supported.  You must be booted from a GUID partition or RAID scheme.
see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2434 for more information (internal error 28:3)
THEN ANOTHER ONE POPS UP saying:
Your Hard Drive partition scheme is not supported, you must be booted from a GUID partition scheme.
see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html? artnum=303609 for more information
I went to those URL and tried to understand what it was telling me but I did not understand.  I can't figure, by reading thru forums, etc, if I need to do this or not and what exactly it is.
So back to just pushing a simplet update has thrown all this unknown info. my way and I have no clue what to do.
Thank you. Hope this is more clear.

  • Need help with Multiprovider and partitioning

    Hello Bw Experts,
I have one sales cube which has 4 years of sales data. to improve the performance proposal is to create 4 separate infocubes for each year and then create multiprovider on top of that to run the quarries.
Can some one please provide me step by step guide on how I can partition the cube for each year and then how I can collect all the data in multiprovider by each year.
is any ABAP programming is required to call the data for each year in correct sequence ??? or it could be managed  with simple update routines.
your help is highly appreciated and I will assign points to  all the answers.
    Thank you very much
    Krish

    Hello Krish,
    How r u ?
***Assuming u have 0calday in the existing sales cube.
    1. Create 4 New Cubes using COPY FROM option with the existing Sales Cube.
    2. Add 2 Time Characteristics 0calmonth & 0calyear to all the 4 new cubes & Activate.
    3. GENERATE EXPORT DATASOURCE for the existing Sales Cube.
    4. Create Update Rules for all the 4 new cubes with the existing Sales Cube's Generated Export DataSource.
    5. On the InfoSources -> Application Component -> Data Marts -> sales cube's InfoSource -> Myself Source System -> Create 4 InfoPackages.
    6. The entries in the Scheduler screen for each InfoPackage.(Assume u r loading data from 1 st JAN 2002 - 31 st DEC 2005)
    Data selection is for 0calday.
    InfoPackage-DataSelection----
    Data Target
    ____________From______ To________
    IPA 1-------01.01.2002 31.12.2002 New Cube 1
    IPA 2-------01.01.2003 31.12.2003 New Cube 2
    IPA 3-------01.01.2004 31.12.2004 New Cube 3
    IPA 4-------01.01.2005 31.12.2005 New Cube 4
    Load the Data.
***you can do this with only one InfoPackage, if u will not miss these for every load(all the 4 Data Targets will be displayed select one by one and load the data).
By this your data will be loaded yearwise into the Cube with 3 Time Characteristics (0calday, 0calmonth & 0calyear).
You can now create the Multi Provider on top of all these Cubes and use for Reporting.

  • Need Help finding JSP Bootcamp (training)

    Hello,
I am an HTML developer with a bit of experience in ASP, PHP and MySQL. My company is making a commitment to JSP and Oracle and I need to get up to speed relatively quickly. Can anyone reccomend a good JSP, Oracle & OOP bootcamp.
    Thanks,
    Doug

I would suggest picking up a few books on JSP, it is simular to ASP (in some aspects), if you know java, it will be a breeze. Oracle? Well it takes years and talent to get good at that, alot of money to run a good O-dbase. OOP? Any good java book will teach you the basics, takes awhile to get good at that, (the concepts alone, then the coding...). Good luck!!
PS. I suggest the books from sun, i have had no complaints using them...

  • Need Help Cloning Old Windows XP to Mac with VMWare Fusion

Hello I'm new to the forums and I have been searching all over for a good answer on how to do this.
I have a ton of applications, docs, etc. on my old windows xp machine that I need and I am looking for a way to clone the drive it to my mac that is using VMWare Fusion. I have an external hard drive and have tried acronis true image but apparently that doesnt work. So I am looking for a good step by step process on how to do this.
Also later I want to clone the same windows xp drive to another mac that is using boot camp. will that be the same?
    Thanks

The easiest way would be to put the PC hard drive into an external enclosure and use Disk Utility or a similar tool to create a disk image file that you can copy to the Mac. You may be able to read the PC disk image format and get VMWare to read the resulting image.
Even if you make it that far, I don't think you will be able to get Windows to use it as a boot drive. You will have much more success just creating a new disk image and reinstalling everything with the correct drivers. Then just copy your documents back over using more traditional methods.

I assume its the superblock that i have to repair. I dont think its the luksheader or something similar.
Or do you guys think that the drive itself is broken?
Sadly the drive does not report ready so that I cant even run fsck over it to have a look at the filesystem.
What i find curious is that the drive only begins to report errors when i try to decrypt the data.

Does anyone have any suggestion how i can get the drive to be mounted at least once to recover the data?

Just a quick update: I was able to start testdisk on that devicemapper.

  • Need help on List-Hash partition - oracle 11 feature !

Can a list-hash partitioned tabled be exchanged for a partition?
Say, the table is partitioned by list on CODE (varchar2) column and subpartitioned by a NUMBER column
i.e. create table TAB1 (ID, Code, Number)
    partition by LIST (Code)
    subpartition by HASH (Number)
    subpartition template
    ( subpartition1 , subpartition2 , subpartition3)
    partition part1 values ('A'),
    partition part1 values ('B'),
    partition part1 values ('C')
Lets say the subpartitions1,2 and 3 have values 1,2,3,4,5,6....10, how can I move only say value 1 and 2 into another table using exchange partition method? Is this possible?

    >
Thanks for the reply. The db version details is as below. And I am more interested in knowing if and how can data be extracted from hash sub-partitions for a given sub-partition key value, using partition exchange. Can anyone demonstrate this or point to any article that demonstrates this? I am not even sure if something like is possible.
    >
What part of my reply didn't you undertand?
Except now you are saying 'extract' where before you wanted to exchange the hash subpartition. If you exchange then the subpartition will now have NO data since it will have been exchanged with an empty table.
In a partition exchange ALL of the partition (or subpartition) is exchanged, not just part of it. So for a hash subpartition you either exchange ALL data or none of it. If you only want some of the data in the subpartition you have to query it out.
No one can provide any samples until you provide a valid sample yourself. You said your partitions have character data
    partition part1 values ('A'),
    partition part1 values ('B'),
    partition part1 values ('C')
);But then you ask about manipulating numeric data
    >
Lets say the subpartitions1,2 and 3 have values 1,2,3,4,5,6....10, how
    >
    Which is it?
Post the DDL for the table and show which subpartition you want to query or exchange.

  • How to resize my bootcamp partition without deleting  itit

How can i resize my bootcamp partition to make it larger without deleting it or having to reload windows?

Yesterday expanded my bootcamp partition from 50 up to 100 Gb using Mini Tool Partition Wizard Home Edition, a Freeware Windows Program after seeing this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeKeawqxUa0
Note that I have OSX Mavericks, Steps are:
    1) backup all your files (optional but strongly reccomended).
    2) Using OSX Disk Utility resize MacintoshHD partition leaving unallocated space as much as you need to add to bootcamp partition.
    3) Set Bootcamp as Boot Disk and restart the mac.
    4) in Bootcamp with Windows running launch Mini Tool Partition and select the bootcamp partition.
    5) Choose "expand" option in order to expand the partition using all the unallocated space.
    6) The program prompt to you to restart the mac for apply the task, cause is not possible while the partition is mounted and windows running.
    7) Restart the mac and then automatically Mini Tool Partition will do the job in a "graphic msdos like" form.
I was lucky and worked for me, I have a Late 2009 Mac Mini with MAVERICKS and a samsung 250Gb SSD Evo.
Hope this can help the community but decline any responsibility,  do it at your own risk, you can use programs like winclone or camptune if you feel more comfortable with a pay app.

As the title has stated, I have recently installed Windows XP on my Bootcamp Partition. I am in need of the "Windows Support Software". I am assumeing that is the information that has the Drivers and what not that allow me o properly use my Mac with windows. If anyone can help me locate this inforamtion i would be greatly.... Greatfull.
P.S. The bootcamp assistant is telling me that the Windows Support Sofware canot be found.

You both would have had correct awnsers, but i have a Macbook that is close to three years old. And i can't seem to find my Disc. The only reason i haven't ordered a new one in case of emergencies is I plan on upgrading to the new OS in less then a month.
