Need help configuring music -- 2 ipods/users on 1 computer

My husband and I each have an ipod. We use 1 computer running Windows XP and we each have our own user accounts. I wanted to setup itunes so each of us could have our own playlists on our user accounts but share music that we have. So, I was following this help doc http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93195.
But it doesn't seem right to me. I logged into my user account, moved my iTunes Music folder to the shared directory; logged into iTunes and modified the music folder location. I then logged into my husband's user account and moved the contents of his iTunes Music folder into the shared directory. I modofied the music folder location.
When I switched back to log in as me, I opened iTunes and all I see in the Library is my music, not his. What did I do wrong?

iTunes does not automatically add all music in a folder it uses. You now have to ADD his music to your library for it to show up.

I had a computer that had all of my music on it, it was a combination of music I purchased from iTunes, purchased from other places, and that had been transferred from my CDs. That computer died, and the music was lost. My CDs are in storage and I can't put my hands on them easily. All of that music was on my iPod Nano, but when I plug it in it only gives me the option to erase and sync, and I don't want to lose what's on my iPod but I would like to add new music that I've added to iTunes on my new computer to the iPod. it 's possible you just have to change your sync option from automatic to manual
the way to do this is the do the following
-open iTunes while ipod is connected
-if you get the message to erase and sync just click cancel
-on the left hand side of the iTunes window click on your device in the devices section
-in the ipod summary page go to the bottom of the page and choose "manually manage music"
-click apply and now any new music you want to sync you just drag the music from the library section and drop it onto the ipod in the devices section in iTunes

I bought my iPod 30G when it first came out back in the day. With the protective case it looks like a Walkman, if you know what that is. The new ones are half the thickness of my old skool one. lol!
Anyway, years ago I accidently uploaded a virus in both my PC and laptop. Yeah, real *******. Well, the person who restored my computers couldn't save my music. I still have the iPod but my library on iTunes is gone. If I try to update my iPod in either computer it will erase every song I have on it and only upload the songs/album I'm trying to add. I'm told that this is something Apple did to prevent file sharing, blah, blah, blah...
Does anyone know a way around it? I keep buying CDs just not able to load them into my iPod thru iTunes.

There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

I used to have 2 libraries on my itunes (mine & hubby's). Now it only shows hubby's music library - no classical. How do I get the missing music that is on my ipod back in the itunes library so I can sync my new ipod and get all the music?

Forgotten Restrictions Passcode Help

You will need to restore your device as New to remove a Restrictions passcode. Go through the normal process to restore your device, but when you see the options to restore as New or from a backup, be sure to choose New.
You can restore from a backup if you have one from BEFORE you set the restrictions passcode.

No backup and need to download music FROM ipod to new computer library

My computer crashed and I am on a new computer. I have no back up of my library. I want to upload my music FROM my ipod to my new computer's library. Any help?

Be very careful when connecting an iPod full of music to an empty iTunes library.There is very real risk of permanently losing all the music.
To prevent auto sync, before you connect the iPod go to the iTunes preferences and select "devices", then select "disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods".
An alternative method is to connect the iPod whilst holding down the 'control+shift' keys and do not let them go until your iPod appears in iTunes.
If you see a message that your iPod is associated with a different library and asks if you want to link to a new one, make sure you press "Cancel".
If you should click on "Erase and Sync" will erase all the content currently on your iPod and it will be replaced with the content of the iTunes library you just connected to.
When you've pressed cancel your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list under "devices" and allow you to change the update setting to manage the iPod content manually, and that will let you use your iPod for the time being without the risk of accidentally erasing the contents.
Then do any of the following to transfer your music from iPod back to the computer/iTunes.
For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.

Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump and iPodRobot.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

Enable your iPod for disk use.

Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.

For purchased songs you can plug the iPod into you new computer and use the "File > Transfer Purchases from iPod" feature in iTunes. For music not purchased from the iTunes store you will need a third party program to help. There are a few of them out there, and they are easy to find on Google.

It also sounds like that computer is not authorized for the account. You can only have 5 computers authorized for one account. If yo go to iTunes>Store>View account and then sign in it will tell you how many (but no what computers) are authorized. There is no way to find out what computers are authorized.
You can deauthorize all computer once a year.
