Need help connecting to a shared drive on airport extreme

Connected to an airport extreme with a macbook and OS 10.5.8...can't seem to find where to see the USB connected to the back of the airport...any idea?

Welcome to the discussion area!
I am assuming that your drive is correctly formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT 32. If it's formatted as Windows NFTS, the drive will not appear.
You'll also usually need to use a powered USB hub, even if your drive has it's own power supply because the available power at the USB port on the AirPort Extreme is quite low.
Open the Finder and look for your AirPort Extreme icon under the SHARED heading on the the left side of the window.
Click on the AirPort Extreme icon and a folder representing your drive will appear in the right hand side of the window.
Double click the folder to mount the drive on your desktop.

If you delete it from the computer, it may eventually be deleted from the backup.

  • Need Help Connecting to my Network Drive

Hello all. I have a Buffalo TeraStation network drive. I have it connected via ethernet to my Airport Extreme. It doesn't show up at all on my shared drives when I select "network" from the finder menu. I have all the checkboxes enabled that would show the drive on the desktop or left pane of the windows.
Just out of curiosity I connected the drive to my Mac's ethernet port and it still doesn't show. Any idea?
I have a Mac Desktop Pro running Leopard.
    Thanks;
    Henry

Ok, I feel like a dummy; but happy enough to report I figured it out on my own.
Apparently AirPort Extreme assigned another IP (10.XX.XX.XX) versus my prior (192.XX.XX.XX). I only discovered this when I scrolled through the Terastation Pro display. It scrolls through the varying settings.
Once I realized a new IP was present, I used the "Go" "Connect to Server" commands.
Works great. Maybe someone will learn something from my own lesson.

  • Need help setting up a network with new Airport Extreme

Hey All I need some help. Networks, Wan, WPA it's all greek to me. Here's what I am trying to do, I have a newer imac, an ipod touch, a apple TV and the kids have a laptop running on Vista. I have a DSL internet connection through Verizon with a Westell VersaLink Model 327W router. I disabled the wireless option on the versalink and hooked the Ethernet cable from the versalink to my Airport extreme. I am trying to figure out how to set things up so I can restrict the kids laptop from the internet after say 9pm but allow everything else unlimited access. I've read other posts and the manual but can't figure it out. When I turn the Airport off Bridge mode i get a bunch of errors re DHCP beginning and ending addresses and have no clue how to set this up. Before I spend hours on the phone with tech support I figured someone out there may be able to help. This can't be to difficult or is it?

I had to call Verizon and spend an hour on the phone, my Versalink is about 3 years old and I never updated it. There is a software update which makes it a little more mac friendly. Cables still run through it on the Ethernet port. I was able to turn the wireless feature off on the Versalink (to stop my neighbors and kids from bypassing the APE and just factory reset the APE and set it up with a shared IP adrs instead of bridging it. Also made sure I turned off the guest network on the APE. Once it was set up I clicked on Airport in the Airport Utility then wireless Clinets, jotted down the client I wanted to restrict access to (Kid's Laptop) then go back to Airport screen, last option on right Access then MAC Adrs Access Control change to "Timed Access", then click the + on the bottom of the window, type the MAC adrs you want to restrict and set time limits, when complete click done..... Only took me a week and a half to figure it out...... Good luck, if that doesn't help let me know, but I'm no expert...
    thanks!!
i think i have the most recent 327w update, because it now shows my modem screen in a red color and it is broken into 3 sections across the screen.
as far as the AEBS is concerned, you did not use it in bridge mode at all?
i thought you had to connect 1 cable from it to the 327w? I have about 5 items i will be connecting, so i will probably run any wired from the AESB, but not sure yet?
thanks, and yaeh last time my network took me a bit of time as well!!
what kind of encryption are you running?
    thanks

  • Help: Set up Time Machine Drive with Airport Extreme

I've read a few posts on this topic, none of which addressed my specific issue, but all of which stated that this functionality is not officially supported. I really hope this is not true because I bought my Airport Extreme and Hard Drive based on numerous Apple Store clerks assuring me that this was possible. So any help would be most appreciated. Here's the details/story:
I have a 13" MBP 2.53ghz, running 10.5.8 I've been backing up to a local 1TB HDD over FW800 since July with no problems.
I bought an Airport Extreme and am trying to move the drive to the AE to back up wirelessly. Here's what's happened so far:
    1. I connected the drive with USB to the AE. It mounted no problem and I could see all my backups easily, but Time Machine did not recognize it as my back up drive. When I used the "Change Drive" button in the hopes of "finding" the drive, it just tried to start a new Time Machine back up set, wirelessly. So I think the broad concept is working, it just a matter of getting TM to recognize the back up set.
    2. I plugged the drive in locally with USB (rather than FW800) and did a back up, no problem. After doing this, and plugging the drive back into the AE, TM no recognizes my backup set as mine, and tries to start the next backup, but I got an error message about not being able to write to the drive.
    3. I did some reading online to get some ideas, I used Disk Utility to verify and repair the drive (over USB locally) Disk utility did find some errors, but it didn't seem like anything major.
    4. Now, TM really starts to get going doing a backup, but when it actually comes time to transfer/write the new data over, I get an new error, that my drive is not formatted as a Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I use disk utitilty again, which confirms that the drive IS Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and is partitioned GUID (which I read is also a requirement)
And this is where I am. Any one have any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I'd hate to think it's just to sell their $500 2TB Timecapsule (which is more than 2x the cost of competing 2Tb drives). Maybe Apple should share their secret sauce with the other drive makers so that they all can work.
Though you seem to hate it, you have indeed hit the nail... I also had issues with USB attached drives on my AEBS (Airport Extreme Base Station). This problem occurred before Apple had the policy statement in place and they ended up exchanging my AEBS, since it was crashing the AEBS when the USB drive did not become accessible (it was a WD brand that didn't play nice with any USB connection, as it later turned out). I suspect there was nothing wrong then with my original AEBS' USB connection, but the replacement was more reliable overall however, so it proved a boon. Perhaps Apple learned something from my previous problems.
Anyway, Apple is not without its reasons for this policy. That's the long story.
Short story? Use supported configurations only if you want a reliable backup. In my case, can easily move my drive to a Mini and have it run in a supported configuration whether by sparse bundle format or otherwise.
Network connections do indeed format the way described. • Need help connecting to my external drive

I have an EXTERNAL drive connected to my iMac G5 running 10.4.11. I can not access this drive via the network from my MacBook running 10.5.7. I've check file sharing on both machines prefs.
I can connect to the iMac's HD from my MacBook via my network, but just can't seem to locate the EXTERNAL thats connected to it. I downloaded Sharepoint and still can not get my remote computer to find the external drive.

    Great news, thanks!
Leopard will be the last OS for PPC Macs, so eventually you'll have to, but I'm thinking Tiger should be compatible for another year or two, but in a couple of years Leopard may no longer be sold by Apple, I'm seeing Tiger Install discs go for $200+ nowadays.

  • Need help connecting to network hard drive

I just purchased a new MacBook Pro upgraded from PC. We have a Seagate BlackArmor NAS 110 hard drive that works perfectly well with our PC and home media. Other devices such as our PS3 can see and connect to it just fine. We still haven't been able to get the mac to "see/connect" to the drive. We've gone through the hard drive installation guide but we always end up with an error message that says "connection Failed" there was an error connecting to the server after inputing the username and password to the supposed drive connection. I thought I was doing it right but its not working. I don't know what to do next. Can anyone explain what I should do?

I have the black armour NAS 110 as well. I can access the drive w/ the discovery software. When I try to use i as backup the time machine does not recognise the drive. Also new to macs. Any help appreciated.

  • Has anyone managed to connect an encrypted hard drive to airport extreme?

I am using Hitachi 4TB drive formatted to Apple Encrypted format, requiring password.
The drive works fine on my MACs, when connecting it direclty via USB3 cable.
However, the drive cannot be configured using Airport Utility. The Partion remains invisble, despite me entering the encryption password into it...
My airtport extreme has the lastest firmware 7.7.2
    Any ideas?

Yes there have been several posts about it here. HP does not have the caddy and connector you need but you can get it at www.newmodeus.com.

  • Need help connecting a windows network printer to my Mac (Xerox Phaser 3600) over a windows home network

Need help connecting a windows network printer to my Mac (Xerox Phaser 3600) over a windows home network.
My Mac runs lion and the windows desktop runs Windows XP
I have tried for a few hours or so to connect my mac to this printer over a home network.
For your information it does work when connected directly to my mac using a USB Cable.
If there is no soultion could I have help getting the drivers for a Dell All-in-One Photo 926

In most cases you can connect to the Windows shared printer from the Mac. But there is a dependence on the Mac driver being compatible. For many consumer inkjets, the vendor created driver cannot be used for this type of connection so you need to look at alternative drivers, such as Gutenprint or PrintFab. If you can tell us which brand and model of printer you have shared from Windows then we can answer your question with the preferred procedure on the Mac.

  • Need help with networking external hard drive

    Hi,
I am working on a corporate network and I have a Western Digital My Book Studio Edition external hard drive attached to a Mac OSX 10.4. i have other Macs connecting through the network to this Mac and accessing the external hard drive and it works just fine for that.
What I need help with is the fact that I also have several PCs on the same network (all XP), that need to connect to the hard drive and access the files. I've been able to connect to the Mac using the XP by accessing the IP address. I also set the Mac up with password credentials so that I had to log in to the Mac to access the files. But when I try to access the Mac, it only shows the main computer drive as the only available share and no external drive.
Does anyone know how to access a Western Digital external drive on a Mac from a PC through a network?

For an external hard disk drive or other (different) system shared
storage devices to work, they probably should be formatted in a
format seen by both operating systems.
If the WD unit is not seen by Windows computers on your network,
the WD may have been formatted in HFS+ for the Macintosh. That
is OK unless you need a Windows computer to access the same.
    The Macintosh can see and use a standard Windows disc format;
so the external drive may need to be reformatted away from HFS+
if that is really what is going on (and archive any data on the suspect
drive elsewhere, since it will be lost to reformatting overwrites)
and then both Mac OS X and Windows should see the files on there.
    And Macs set up to run Windows may also see the non-Mac format;
without having to re-boot via BootCamp, if that option is in use.
As to the other question(s) I really have no idea at this point in time.
And since that may be the rub, hopefully someone will follow up here.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How many users can connect to a shared drive on a non-server workstation?

How many users can connect to a shared drive on a non-server workstation? We're waiting for our server to arrive and in the interum we're using a Pegasus 2 R6 attached to an iMac running Mavericks as our fileserver. It's been sketchy, the connection to the server being dropped once in a while or the inability to mount the drive after a week of success. The Pegasus we're using now will be attached to a server once it arrives. For now I need to figure what's coausing trouble before I commit to this being our main storage as planned. The data is backed up every night so I'm not worried, its the usability issues. 5-7 people are mounting this drive and opening/saving at the same time. Is there a limit to Maverick's fileserving ability that may be causing this? Understandable if so.

The file server in the client version of OS X has a default limit of 10 simultaneous connections. That limit can be raised by installing OS X Server, or lowered by setting a hidden preference. Assuming you've done neither, you may be able to solve the problem temporarily by stopping and restarting file sharing in the Sharing preference pane, or permanently by setting another hidden preference on the server to break idle connections quickly.
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer idleDisconnectOnOff -bool YES
Stop and restart file sharing. To reverse the change, run this command in the same way:
defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer idleDisconnectOnOff -bool NO
Credit for this solution to ASC member suter:
this file server will not allow any additional users to log on

  • User no longer able to connect to afp shared drive

I have upgraded our server to 10.7.1.  After about a week about 2/3 of our users are no longer able to connect to the shared drive using afp.  It worked fine for the first week and now several users cannot connect.  When attempting to coonect to the afp share it does not even attempt to authenticate.  Please help.

Is the firewall service turned off? Can you connect to the localhost from the server itself (afp://127.0.0.1/) ?

    Thanks,

    Hello,
I assume GBS Agency Expert 6.7.6c is some sort of database or data source? If you have an ODBC driver then create or use a System DSN to the database. Then you can create a report using that DSN.
Otherwise I suggest you contact the makers of GBS Agency Expert 6.7.6c and ask them how to connect to the database.
Let them know CR is ANSII 92 ODBC 3 compliant.
    Thank you

No eSATA to USB. Just a SATA/IDE to USB adapter. Google SATA/IDE to USB adapter and you will get tons of links to buy them. Most likely your local computer electronics store has them, although they might be more expensive buying locally than online.
I have several. You can get either USB 2, which what I recommend, or USB 3. USB is backward compatible so a USB 3 adapter will work on a USB 2 port and a USB 2 adapter will work on a USB 3 port. Backward compatible in both directions.
I suggest a USB 2 type because there have been some problems with certain USB 3 devices, the USB 3 interface used isn't all that good in those certain devices. USB 3 is still fairly new where as USB 2 has been around for over 10 years.
