Need help connecting two macbooks via ethernet

im at home trying to get my snow leopard disc to install on my macbook. my optical drive is busted so i was trying to use my brothers macbook pro to mount the image and then boot my machine to it.
i only have an ethernet cable. can anyone help us? thanks in advance.

Ethernet or wireless isn't usable because in order to access the drive you must have File Sharing enabled on the computer which you cannot do unless the computer is booted into OS X. If it's booted into OS X you cannot install on it without losing file sharing capability.
A possible workaround if you can get it working is to use Remote Disc Access as is used on the MacBook Airs. See the following:
MacBook Air- Remote Disc, Migration, or Remote Install Mac OS X and wireless 802.11n networks;
MacBook Air- Sharing DVDs or CDs with Remote Disc.
The software can be downloaded from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Directly Connect Two Macs Via Ethernet

This has certainly been answered before, but a quick search didn't give any results. So here goes ...
I wanted to connect two macs via ethernet. I use the mount tool in finder "connect to server" all the time with machines on a network, but I've never done with with two macs directly connected.
So I connect them and my first instinct is to check the IP address of the machine I want to connect to. I then go to "connect to server" and type it in using the AFP protocol, but it doesn't work.
At this point I'm stumped and not sure what to do. I don't use the "network" item in the finder sidebar very often but I clicked it, and sure enough the machine I want to connect to was listed, and I was able to connect / mount.
So here's my question ... if I wanted to use "connect to server" tool, or even mount it manually with the mount command, how would I do it? Is it using AFP still to mount and the IP address is just bogus? Something else going on?

But I'm telling you I tried using the IP address ... here, let me try again ...
I find this address on the machine I want to connect to: 169.254.177.122
I put this into "connect to server" on the machine I want to connect from: afp://169.254.177.122
It spins for a while, then says it can't connect. Strangely, if I do a cmd-i on the machine in the network sidebar, it says: nfs:// automount ... into /Network
So are you sure putting in the ip should work? If so what am I doing wrong?
Okay ... plot thickens. When I cmd-i after I connect, it indeed says it is an AFP connect, but it gives the "local" name, say powerbook.local. But then, if I "ping powerbook.local" if gives me back the same IP I tried in connect to server. Huh?
    mbp:~ rjcarr$ ping powerbook.local
    PING powerbook.local (169.254.177.122): 56 data bytes
Weird. It isn't that big of a deal ... I just like to know what is going on.

  • Problems connecting two Macpro via ethernet while airport is on for interne

I have two Macpro connected via ethernet. To make this connection work I have to go to system preferences/network and put ethernet the first in the list of "connectivity systems". As airport goes to the second place in the list I loose internet connection via airport. Is there any way of keep the two connections at the same time? It seems that only the first in the list works properly.
    Thank you.

Mondotropo Hola, y una cálida bienvenida a los foros!
The Interface that connects to the Internet, (Airport in your case), needs to be dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON.
Local networking should use Ethernet below that... OSX tries the top one for Internet.

  • Need Help Connecting New MacBook Pro with Wireless Network Password

    Hi Linksys Community,
I would like to ask for your help and advice.
I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro, OS X, Version 10.8.3.
I need to setup a password to the wireless internet network (I've successfully done this)
    I have a Wireless G,  WRT54G Router.
When I setup the password, I'm not able to connect to the internet with my new MacBook Pro, which is running Mac OS X Version 10.8.3.  I get the message 'cannot connect to Internet, connection timeout) However, I'm able to connect to the internet with an older MacBook Pro, and my iPad. The password works fine with other models.
Would anyone be able to help me troubleshoot what is going on, or how I can solve this problem?
I would like to be able to have a password on my network, and use the internet with my new MacBook Pro.
I have read about manually adding in the MAC address of computers, and setting up a Wireless MAC fiter.
Does anyone think this would solve the problem?  if so, how can I find out the MAC address of my MacBook Pro?
Thanks in advance for you help and time!

    Hi,
    Thanks for your response.
Yes, my computer connects when your network is open (no password set)?
    I used WPA Pre-Shared Key.
Do you know how I could check if my new MacBook Pro is compatible with this?
    Thanks!

    Hey @Davidm123 ,
    Welcome to the HP forums.
I understand you're experiencing an issue with poor video output to your projector.
According to the product page you have linked, the projector has a native resolution of 320 x 240. This would likely explain the poor video output.
You should be able to confirm the resolution settings in the Screen Resolution menu of Windows by right clicking on your Desktop and selecting Screen Resolution.
    Thanks.

  • Need help connecting to Internet via bluetooth'd cell phone

I have my iBook connected to my cell phone (i-mate K-jam) via bluetooth and I'm trying to figure out how to connect to t-mobile gsm so I can get to the internet. I can access the net with my K-jam by itself, I just can't figure out how to do it with my iBook. Has anyone done this and do you have a step-by-step???
    Thanks,
    Tom

Fixed it! I followed this: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?p=6184897#post6184897 The key was to put a fake user name and password. Even though Tmobile doesn't require it, I had to put something in. d for user and u for password works...anything will work.

  • I need to backup TC's drive. How do I do this to WD MyBook Live connected to TC via Ethernet?

I need to backup TC's drive. How do I do this to WD MyBook Live connected to TC via Ethernet?

P.S. Solved it exactly the other way around (compared to the original intent). 4 simple steps:
    1. Made WD's MyBook Live my primary file server.
    2. Made WD's MyBook Live my backup location for Time Machine (moving to it made me reconfigure TM on all home Macs = new full backups and no old data left - but I didn't really need old backups - they were sitting there just in case).
Added bonus - on MyBook Live it is easy to create shares (so that now my general file server is separate from my photo archive and software archive, etc.) - while on TC I had to partition the drive.
    3. Moved all files from TC to MyBook Live.
    4. Erased all data from TC - so that its drive is clean.
    5. Instructed MyBook Live to automatically backup itself to TC.
    Job done.

  • Is it possible to connect two Macs via USB ?

Is it possible to connect two Macs via USB just like Firewire back in the day via Target mode or is there something similar? I am asking this because about 2-3 years ago I would normally image Macs via Target Mode. I used to have a regular Macbook running 10.6 along with a customized-ready-to-go .dmg image saved on the Desktop. Whenever I needed to put that image into any Mac I would simply connect the two Macs via Firewire, I would then press "T" at startup which will get me in Target Mode, I would then see the disk appear in the desktop of the Mac I had the image. I would then copy that image to the T mode macbook using super duper. Can this still be done through USB with new models and if so will I also need to press T at startup ?

No, USB connection does not qualify for this, only firewire and thunderbolt, as I read (but cannot test, for the time being I have only one such mac around).
This is why the short series of alu MBs (2008) are not qualified for target mode either.
p.s. What ‘new models’ do you refer to?
