Need help converting BibleWorks Hebrew font to Unicode

Greetings all you InDesign scholars!
I am currently busy converting a print version of a book to e-book format. The difficulty I am having has to do with the way Adobe InDesign handles right-to-left fonts. The book on which I am working contains a lot of Hebrew because it is an intensive word-study of the Hebrew Bible.
When the InDesign document was first created from a Word Document, Adobe took all of the right-to-left Hebrew characters and flipped them around backwards. What a mess! My employer tells me that their solution was to manually go through the book and change every charater to bwhebb, the BibleWorks font. Yikes! This is not a unicode font, so when I export an XML file from InDesign to make an e-book, all of my Hebrew letters come out as garbled Roman letters and symbols. I'm trying to find a macro that will let me convert to a Unicode font so that we can quickly change things to export this file but WITHOUT inverting the letters.
Are any of you knowledgeable about this kind of problem?
Thank you!

Yes, and ugh. That would have been a fine solution in 1994, but today there is no reason whatsoever to use legacy non-Unicode text encodings for languages like Hebrew. I've never used BibleWorks myself, but it's just like the stuff I face on a daily basis - many people who learned how to key non-Latin scripts in the 90s are reluctant to give up their legacy-encoding fonts, so after a few years of hassling my Lao and Cambodian translators, I just give in and write text conversion scripts for them (or custom keyboards that let them key in their preferred keyboard layout yet generate Unicode text).
I did a bit of digging around for you, and found that there are Word macros already written that will handle the BibleWorks -> Unicode conversion for you. I doubt that every single one of these steps will work for you, but in your shoes I'd
1) Export perfectly-styled text from InDesign to RTF (or go back and get that source Word doc)
2) Open RTF in Word
3) Use a Word macro to convert text from BibleWorks to Unicode (link to Youtube showing particulars including .exe download that is supposed to do the conversion for you)
4) Place RTF back into InDesign and clear overrides (or re-place Word doc and re-format)
If your book isn't already perfectly styled then that won't work for you. A Javascript could be developed to use in InDesign, and if I were a fast scripter I'd hammer it out for you. I am an abysmally slow scripter, or I'd be hammering away instead of posting. But it seems doable to me - if you already had tables showing the BibleScript encoding I might be able to just copy and paste into my scripts for converting similar old fonts to Unicode.

The ID Program folder will be relevant to your OS...
I took a shot and right clicked on my Scripts Samples, choose reveal in Explorer and opened up the ID Program folder.
As shown, there is a Fonts folder.

  • Do we need to convert Chinese/Japanese properties to Unicode?

    Dear friends,
I am new to this Internationalization concept. I have a web application and I am looking forward to implement Internationalization.
To make my app support muti-language, I am using Locale & Resource bundle to find properties files based on Country and Language. I have different properties files based on countries. This works fine when there are unicode characters and no special characters in the property file.
For eg. the application doesn't displays Chinese/Japanese characters with System.out.println at all. It displays something weird symbols..
    P.S : I haven't converted Chinese/Japanese properties files to Unicode with native2ascii tool?
An important question for me is,
    1) Do we need to convert Chinese/Japanese or any non-unicode related properties files with native2ascii tool?
    2) Is there any other way to read such properties files without converting them with native2ascii tool?
    3) We have made fixed UTF-8 format policy for the app. Is there any way to read those properties file with UTF-8 mechanism without need to convert the properties files?
    4) If anyone has quick example code for displaying Chinese/Japanese characters from properties file, then that would be a great help.
Thanks a million. Any help would be highly appreciated.
    sachin

System.out.println display depends on the system locale. If you are running on a US English system, Chinese and japanese will not display correctly in the console.
    Your properties file questions:
    1) Do we need to convert Chinese/Japanese or any non-unicode related properties files with native2ascii tool? yes
    2) Is there any other way to read such properties files without converting them with native2ascii tool? - no
    3) We have made fixed UTF-8 format policy for the app. Is there any way to read those properties file with UTF-8 mechanism without need to convert the properties files? no

  • Need help in finding a font for a logo

I was looking for help in finding a font for my logo. I'm not a designer at all, so I'm calling on all the fine designers and folks on the Adobe site to help me out. All replies are, of course, appreciated and any suggestions/comments/ideas will be welcome.
I'm designing a logo for my film company. I wanted to keep it simple but not boring either. I put together the first draft of the logo using Photoshop CS3 and used Trajan Pro for the film company words (Panthera Films) and used Futura for the slogan ("Inspiration through Imagination"). While I don't mind the fonts, it's simple but, alas, too boring. I love the panther image but need a dynamic font for "Panthera Films" and a complimenting font for the slogan.
Can anyone recommend a good combination of fonts to replace the Trajan Pro and Futura? As well, I want to give the logo a nice presence without it being too loud, bold or jumping off the page. As well, should the font for "Films" be the same as "Panthera" or can they be different?
The image I attached is something I was thinking to use as a banner on a website.
Any help would be appreciated too with this
    TIA,
    Dale

    Dale,
As I said, I like it too.
You may consider making it a bit heavier, maybe bold, for readability at small sizes.
It is hard to recommend a specific font because it should represent your company and what it stands for. Have you tried typing the name in a word processing application (Worst or something better) and then running through all the font you have? If not, that might give you a few new thoughts about the overall kind of font you feel is the right one. And then it is much easier to recommend something.

  • I am a beginner at Final Cut Pro. Need help converting MPEG-2 to use.

I am a beginner at Final Cut Pro. I have mpeg-2 video footage that I am trying to import the footage into Final cut, but can't. I understand I need to convert the file format. I am unfamiliar with how to go about the converding file formats and the codec what is the best way to go about converting the file format so I can edit it on Final cut pro?

Where did the files originate? (How were they created?)
Some formats can be brought in with the help of plug-ins.
MPEG Streamclip can usually convert them to Quick Time.

  • Need help converting quicktime movies into Flash files

I need to convert a QT, PhotoJPEG compressed, movie file into a .flv format. I have AE 6.5 Standard and it keeps quitting on exporting a SWV file which would could probably get me by with my client. But, again, it errors out saying something like a JPG is busy, or a file is busy.
I have FlipforMac,a purchased version. But I'm not sure if converting it into a .wmv and then a Flash file is the best route or is even possible.
Any suggestions or ideas of software that I could purchase??
    ~reicko

i don't think you have read up on the use of flash video
(FLV). there's nothing you need that you do
not already have (except maybe quicktime pro or some other
video editing program). the FLV exporter
comes FREE with flash 8. You should be able to open your
quicktime movie in QT PRO and export to FLV
format - then use any of the flash playback components for
FLV files - best bet is to read the help
docs on this subject and go to the devnet section of
adobe.com where there are several in-depth
articles about implementing flash video into your site.

  • Need Help Converting Video

Hello - I have a couple of separate questions that I need help with.  I know basic FCP.  I have FCP7.  I recently shot a wedding with 2 different cameras.  Both are HiDef Cameras.  1 Camera is a Prosumer Camera where the files were taking off the camera and imported by Final Cut.  The second is a new, home camcorder which saved the files into a hard drive in MPEG 4 format.
I need to marry the two.  I can import the all the files (from both cameras) directly into the timeline.  But the ones from the camcorder (the mpeg4s) seem to have that "hitchy" feel to them when I play them back.  Also, both types of files (even the ones that were directly imported into Final Cut from the Prosumer Camera) have the "render" lines when they are in the timeline, so I constantly have to render which takes forever.
The files that were imported directly into FCP from the ProSumer camera were imported on a different computer with a different version of FCP, so when I drag them into my timeline it tells me that they were from a different version and asks me if I want to update for my version.  If I click YES then it stretches the files from 16:9 to 4:3.  If I say NO then it keeps the 16:9 aspect ratio, but adds yet another layer of render I need to do.
Normally I do simple, Standard Def edits where I import things into the timeline via FCP7 with firewire from a deck and edit directly from there, then firewire back to the deck.  Simple - no rendering, etc.  My questions are as follows:
1 - Do I need to reset my timeline settings because I am now working with HiDef?  Or does FCP automatically know that it is HD and it doesnt matter how I drag it into the timeline?
2 - Do I need to convert the MPEG 4 files to quicktime format, or does it not make a difference
3 - When I export, what settings would I use to keep it in HiDef.  I am only going to make DVDs with it.
4 - Is there a way to do it so that I do not have to render constantly while editing
5 - To view, I am firewiring out to a deck which is then going into a Standard Def monitor.  Is that the reason the footage appears "hitchy"?
Any help is greatly appreciated.  If you have any help, please drop me a note at [email protected]
    Thanks

YOu need to learn how to use FCP.  Sorry, no offense needed, and I know it sounds harsh. But from reading that I can tell you have no idea about how to properly import tapeless media into FCP...and don't know what formats FCP works with...nor know what formats the cameras record.  This is all basic stuff you need to know before you edit.  Editing isn't only creative, but lately highly technical as well...you need to know what your software is capable of doing, and how to get the footage into it properly.
You cannot do what you did...directly drag from the cameras into FCP.  No...it needs to be imported, typically with LOG AND TRANSFER...and converted from the shooting format, which typically isn't natively editable in FCP (want native, use Adobe Premiere...).  It needs to be converted to ProRes.  And yes, the file sizes of ProRes are a LOT bigger than the camera originals.  4-5 times larger.  That's how FCP works.
Here's a quick tutorial to get you started.  But then I suggest getting to know the editing system better.

  • Need help converting photo jpg to a video file.

So I have a 6 minute animation that was sent to me as a series of photo-jpgs. I need to convert them to a video file rather than a huge sequence of stills so I can add some transitions. The images are 1920 by 1080. I don't want to compress them at all until the final render. What sequence settings should I use and how should I export? I know there a billion and two different ways to do this but for some reason I keep screwing it up.
    Jon

As long as the images are sequentially numbered, 001, 002 etc,
    1. open up QT Pro and import as a still image sequence and save is as an animation codec.
    2. create a sequence using the animation codec as the basis, import all the images and drop them into the timeline.
Recognize that the animation codec requires a huge bit of horsepower and disk throughput to edit in real time.

  • Need help converting PSD to EPS using Illustrator

    Hello everyone!
I'm trying to convert .psd files into an .eps using a batch process in Illustrator. I know you can save a .psd into an .eps in Photoshop, but it ends up flattening most of the image and I need all text to remain editable in Illustrator.
What happens is when I manually open a .psd I can choose to convert Photoshop layers to objects, leaving the text editable and allowing me to flatten transparencies without flattening the entire image and rendering it uneditable. I record the action and then run it as a batch, but it will automatically open the .psd with the layers flattened into a single image. I don't want it to be a single image because when it is printed out the lines and text come out jagged looking, as if there is no anti-alias applied to the image. If I print it out after doing to the process manually the text and lines come out smooth as it should with anti-alias applied to the image. Is there anyone who know how to run a batch where it will open the .psd with the layers converted to objects automatically? I tried opening a file while I was recording the action, but it would only apply the actions to that particular file and just open the rest without applying any of the actions. I know this process may seem a bit much, but this is for a special process we have implemented and this seems to be the only answer at the moment. Any help would be much appreciated!

Just a suggestion - I use this for 'problematic' clients who modify their text/images a lot and in a short space of time. It's cumbersome but it keeps everything editable and easy to keep track of. Personally I export to pdf. Does Opensource not support that format?
Dump your psd file into Illustrator as a background image. Place your type over the image as required, with effects as required. When done, delete the psd file and save the Ai file as is, with editable fonts - no need to outline them or convert effects. Save the psd file as a tiff and place it into a page in Indesign. Place the Ai text file on top of it and export the single Indesign page file as a pdf or eps. Then if someone asks for the text matter - or the image content - to be modified, either part can be very swiftly amended and re-exported out of Indesign, so that your pdf or eps still contains "live" fonts as opposed to vectors, (the advantage being that even the eps/pdf is editable at that point). Indesign recognises that a file has been updated, so you can update the master composite on the fly.
The nice thing about this is that you can assemble multiple composite artwork pages in Indesign and export the whole lot as individual eps files in one batch, or as part batches. And keep a master Indesign job file of the whole shooting match that can be collected into organised folders if you need to. I don't know how Indesign would export psd files to an eps format because I've never tried it. I prefer to flatten a copy to tiff, because then I know there is just one master file with no layers and no chance of a bit falling off somewhere, although there's no real reason why it should!
    All the best
