Need Help Converting iPod from Mac to Windows

Hi, I have a 3rd Gen iPod and I just gave it to my friend who has a windows xp machine. I had a Mac OS 10.3.9 system. When he plugged the iPod into his windows, it told him that it needed to be configured to windows and that he should connect it to a power adapter. When he did this, the iPod just gave an icon resembling the plug that connects to the bottom of the iPod. Now his iPod won't turn on and when plugged into his computer, it says that there has been a malfunction and his computer does not recognize the USB device. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

That generation iPod requires a combo USB/Firewire cable. It simply won't work with USB alone. It also needs to be re-formated for Windows and that can be done within iTunes. Along with that cable, he will need the A/C power adapter.

    Hello.
    I need to format a 3rd Gen iPod from Mac to windows for my Father in Law.
    So please can anyone tell what the process is?
    Many thanks,

    The iPod is formatted for both PC and Mac, I used to use mine with a PC, bought a Mac, plugged it in and it worked with the Mac no problem. I'm not sure that this works both ways though, if you're having problems you could try this link for help: http://ipod.about.com/od/restoreandreformatipod/a/ipod_reformat.htmhttp://

  • How do I change my Ipod from mac to windows format??

    How do I change my Ipod from mac to windows format?? My Imac is not working at the moment, but I want to use my Ipod on my PC. How do I get my Ipod(mac formated) to get work on my PC??

    Use iTunes on the PC to restore the iPod, or install XPlay on the PC without changing the format. Restoring the iPod will erase everything on it.

  • Switching ipod from mac to windows

    I previously used my iPod with my Mac and Powerbook. Now I have purchased a PC. My computer recognizes my iPod but none of my songs appear under my iPod. What's wrong? Any help appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Nothing is wrong. As the other poster said, since your iPod was previously setup with a Mac, it is in Mac format. Your new PC will not be able to read your iPod as it is.
    There are 2 possible ways to make your iPod work with your PC:
    (1) Restore the iPod using the Windows version of the iPod software updater. This will erase everything on your iPod including your previous songs but the iPod will then be readable by your PC. Note that you have to install iTunes first, and then the iPod software updater. Download them from the given links if you do not have them.
    (2) Get some special third party programs such as Xplay, which allows you to read your Mac formatted iPod directly with your PC. You can then access the songs on your iPod. The software is not free, however.
    What do you want to do?

  • How do I save tracks in order to format ipod from Mac to windows?

    I have been given an ipod that was originally used on a Mac but i have Windows. Is there any way I can save the tracks before formatting it ?
    When i plug in the ipod to my computer it only gives me the option of formatting it.
    There are some 11 g's of music and i can't bear to lose it.
    If backed up the music on a Mac could I then re-load the tracks from it once the ipod has been formatted for Windows?

    "if backed up the music on a Mac could I then re-load the tracks from it once the ipod has been formatted for Windows?"
    Yes you could, Macs can read Windows formatted iPods. If you only have the songs on the iPod, and have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
    The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac. The procedure is a bit involved but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
    If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. • Reconfigure iPod from mac to Windows detrimental?

    Have: video iPod, G4 w/current iTunes library, new PC
    Don't have: DVD burner, network for the 2 computers.
    Trying to get iTunes library from G4 to PC. Would like to use iPod as hard disk, but configured to mac. Can I reconfigure iPod to Windows for the transfer or will that adversely affect iPod long-term?
    With no network connection, DVD burner, or other storage (external hard disk, flash, etc.) Is the only other option to burn CD's for transfer?

    1. Reformat your iPod as FAT32 with Disk Utility.
    2. Move your iTunes Music folder to your iPod in the Finder (Default is Home->Music->iTunes).
    3. Import your music into your PC's iTunes library (using "Add to library..." in iTunes). Make sure it's copying the music from your iPod to your PC's hard disk, which it should do by default but I'm not certain.
    4. Plug your iPod back into your Mac and reformat as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    Hope that works.

  • Ipod from mac to Window

    Hi everyone,
    I have an Ipod program on a macintosh computer. Now I don't have anymore this computer I have presently a window PC. I want to format my Ipod on my new cumputer without losing all my files and songs. Is it possible.
    Thanks for your answers,

    HFS Explorer should let you get access to the files on the device, after which this section from my previous post will tell you how to extract the files and get them into a usable iTunes library.
    There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide

  • Converting ipod from Mac set up to PC set

    Is there a way to change an orginal ipod set up to run on a mac to run on a PC without losing the files?

    Yes. Back up your itunes library to CD. Then when you get software installed (from web so it is the latest versions) on the windows computer connect the ipod and restore it, if it doesn't prompt you to automatically. Then import your songs form the cd's to itunes in windows. Then update the ipod.
    Done.

Trying to update -stair step style starting with 10.3.4. Error says "You cannot install this software, on this Volume. This Volume does not meet the requirements for this update." • I need help to go from fullscreen to window mode.

    I recently started programming very simple java games, when I get stuck I ask for help or find free code on the internet.
    I'm currently using free code to run a JFrame in full screen exclusive mode.
    I cannot figure out how to go from full screen exclusive mode back to regular window mode.
    here is the code I'm using
       private final boolean initialiseFullScreen() {
            setUndecorated(true);
            setIgnoreRepaint(true);
            setResizable(false);
            graphicsDevice = GraphicsEnvironment.
                    getLocalGraphicsEnvironment().getDefaultScreenDevice();
            // Check to see if FSEM is supported and if the target display mode is
            // available and if the desired buffer strategy can be created.
            if (graphicsDevice.isFullScreenSupported()) {
                graphicsDevice.setFullScreenWindow(this);
                if (setDisplayMode(screenWidth, screenHeight, screenColorDepth)) {
                    if (setBufferStrategy()) {
                        return true;
            return false;
        private final boolean setDisplayMode(
                int screenWidth, int screenHeight, int screenColorDepth) {
            if (graphicsDevice.isDisplayChangeSupported() == false) {
                return false;
            boolean displayModeAvailable = false;
            DisplayMode[] displayModes = graphicsDevice.getDisplayModes();
            for (DisplayMode mode : displayModes) {
                if (screenWidth == mode.getWidth() && screenHeight == mode.getHeight()
                        && screenColorDepth == mode.getBitDepth()) {
                    displayModeAvailable = true;
            if (displayModeAvailable == false) {
                return false;
            DisplayMode targetDisplayMode =
                    new DisplayMode(screenWidth, screenHeight,
                        screenColorDepth, DisplayMode.REFRESH_RATE_UNKNOWN);
            try {
                graphicsDevice.setDisplayMode(targetDisplayMode);
            } catch (IllegalArgumentException exception) {
                return false;
            return true;
        private final boolean setBufferStrategy() {
            try {
                // If this process is not running from the event dispatch thread
                // (which is desirable) then make use of invoke and wait to avoid
                // a potential deadlock situation. This may be an unncessary
                // precaution in Java 1.6
                if (EventQueue.isDispatchThread() == false) {
                    EventQueue.invokeAndWait(new Runnable() {
                        public void run() {
                            createBufferStrategy(FSEM_NUM_PAGE_BUFFERS);
                } else {
                    createBufferStrategy(FSEM_NUM_PAGE_BUFFERS);
                // Sleep for a short interval to provide adequate time for the buffer
                // strategy to be created.
                Thread.sleep(500);
            } catch (Exception exception) {
                return false;
            // Store the created buffered strategy for use within the render cycle
            bufferStrategy = getBufferStrategy();
            return true;
        }

    Create a new method that does the opposite initialiseFullScreen().
    Start with:
    setUndecorated(false);
    setIgnoreRepaint(false);
    setResizable(true);Then call methods on the graphicsDevice to return to windowed mode.
    Look at what the methods used do:
    [http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/awt/GraphicsDevice.html#setFullScreenWindow(java.awt.Window)|http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/awt/GraphicsDevice.html#setFullScreenWindow(java.awt.Window)]
    According to the docs, setFullscreenWindow can enter fullscreen, but also leave fullscreen with:
    setFullscreenWindow(null);

    I have just had to resort to getting a PC and I don't know how to get all my stuff from my mac to my PC. Specifically; iPhoto library, itunes folder, mailboxes and signatures in Mail, bookmarks in firefox or safari, 'address book' v cards, and all my textedit docs (AAARRRGGHHHH!).

    Apple devices are designed to only allow you to sync to one itunes library at a time. If you try, it will replace everything on the deivce with the itunes library you are syncing to.
    If she has already synced her ipad to another computer, then this is normal behavior.
    It would be best to create a library just for her. If you can import/export the music and photos on the computer into her own itunes library.

    The reason that content from her ipad is showing up on your iphone is probably due to you both sharing the same apple id and having automatic downloads turned on in the settings.
    You can turn this off by going to settings/itunes and app stores/automatic downloads/turn off

    also i can't restore it because of this
    occasionally it will show up on the screen and say something like drive needs to be repaired, then says this is successful but its not. ipod screen will say something like connected but won't show up on itunes
    i think i rather naively tried to reformat and have broken it. its kind of broken by itself like sometimes it resets its own date

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
